Fine dining in Manning, S.C.

Feb 18, 2010, 12:21 AM EST

So by the time my stomach was beginning to tell me it was time for dinner, the options were a bit limited. Had to drive another 20 miles or so before reaching the next exit with dining advertised.

So hello from Manning, S.C., where my choices ranged from Subway to Arby’s to two “authentic Mexican restaurants” to the Southern staple known as Shoney’s. Was there any real debate here? Shoney’s it is.

Should be less than two hours from here to Savannah. Stay tuned…

You didn't stop at South of The Border? For Shame!I <3 South of the Border. Never drove past there without stopping for at least and hour. I remember at one time they had a Laser Tag arena there(don't think it is still there now), we'd stop on the way down and play Laser Tag before getting back on the road.

I certainly have made the trip before, and it does have its charms. Please make sure to find local non-chain restaurants you might enjoy. Some of us may get to follow you someday, and local spots are almost always a better memory.

Ha! I've never stopped at South of the Border yet, and I've made the drive between here and Florida countless times. Always been intrigued, but timing was off.Shoney's… Mmmmm pies!

Not far off 95 in Yemesee, SC, is Harolds Country Club. It's been featured on Destination Golf/South Carolina (currently airing) check for times in Feb., also featured on the Travel Channel, the best steaks on saturday nights you'll ever taste, and rustic charm like no other, a hidden gem indeed.
