Nats bench in a pinch

Apr 30, 2011, 12:06 AM EDT

The Nationals haven’t exactly been coming through in pinch-hitting situations this season. In fact, they entered tonight’s game with only one hit in 15 pinch-hit at-bats this season.

That stat, though, doesn’t entirely reflect the performance of the Nats’ bench so far.

Please check the number of at bats please. They were 1 for 19 going into last weekend. I am pretty sure they have not lost 4 at bats since, I am sure they had no hits since though.

I think Jesus Flores has the only hit and we know who has the bulk of the o'fers….

I am gathering them now as I am sure the number is higher.

    Once I read the article it said 1 for 25m which I could have believed except when I went through the numbers game to game I only came up with 1 for 23 Doing it by hand I could have missed 2. Nix 7 0Ramos 1 0Stairs 9 0Hairston1 0Morse 1 0Cora 2 0Flores 1 1Ankiel 1 0Total 23 1

According to BaseballReference.com, the Nationals are 1 for 25, but also have 8 walks and one sacrifice. That comes up to a .040/.273/.040/.313 split. Pretty awful, but it makes sense when your pinch hitting "specialist" is still hitless, and accounts for 10 of those outs in 10 ABs. Though, I suppose you become a specialist when you physically are incapable of doing anything else for the team.Couldn't we use his roster spot on something useful, like an extra reliever? Especially considering Rigg's quick hook, it wouldn't hurt to have a couple more options in the pen.
