Game 65: Rays at Nats

Jun 19, 2012, 11:00 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Chien-Ming Wang faces David Price in tonight's series opener at Nationals Park.

Licking their wounds after a sweep at the hands of the Yankees, the Nationals don't get any break this week. The Tampa Bay Rays come to town beginning tonight, and they'll have their ace (former No. 1 draft pick David Price) on the mound for the opener of this interleague series.

With the left-hander on the mound, the Nationals counter with a right-handed heavy lineup. That means Danny Espinosa is leading off, with Tyler Moore in left field and Steve Lombardozzi on the bench. Ryan Zimmerman and Michael Morse are hitting in the prized No. 3 and No. 4 spots; each slumping hitter is currently taking a round of early batting practice with hitting coach Rick Eckstein, manager Davey Johnson and GM Mike Rizzo all watching from the behind the cage.

Chien-Ming Wang, meanwhile, gets the ball for his fourth start of the season, hoping this will be the start he completes six full innings for the first time. The Nationals could certainly use a quality outing out of the veteran right-hander.

Updates to come…

Mick.. BJ is a free agent that is coveted by Rizzo (along with half the FA CF's on the market this year), A ton of moves will have to occur before they go after him.

  2. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:05 AM

Some people expect that all 40 players on the roster need to be significant contributors with no faults, no lapses, no bad games. Just root for the damn team and take the hiccups and let them roll off your back. I'm ticked that Wang's got a WHIP of about 3.0 as a starter, but I'm not going through the rest of the roster with a fine-tooth comb.

  3. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:06 AM

This is Zim's at-bat to break out right here! (I hope)

  4. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:06 AM

CN.. AMEN.. and we have Stras going tomorrow night.. AND loooky there.. Zim got a hit.

  5. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:07 AM

    BOOM MIKEY!!!! BEAST GOES YARD.

  6. mick - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:07 AM

Davey is perfect for this team right now, but alas, I think he will be Nats Bruce B. We saw a glimpses this weekend of what playoff baseball would be like under Davey, not good. Maybe he will get the Nats to post season, but like many other good managers, Danny Ozark years ago with Phillies, will never win a playoff series. Obviously in 1986 he won it all, but over all Davey's playoff record is awful For right now Davey is perfect for this team

  7. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:07 AM

It's a ball game again, now let's go talk about the game again

  8. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:08 AM

Go figure. no one Zim gets a hit.

  9. sm13 - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:08 AM

Between, Gio, EJaz, and Chad Tracey, Rizzo has a pretty good won-lost record this season. And, as I type, Zim and the Beast combine for 2 runs — been a while since we could say that!

  10. JaneB - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:08 AM

I am so happy for him! Beast Mode!

  11. Joe Seamhead - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:09 AM

    da Beast awakens!

  12. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:10 AM

Mick.. Davey for this team for the next few years or as long as he wants to manage. The good thing is that with the coaching tree, we have others that can step in IF davey ever decides to step aside.

Oh, it's so great to be Hacking That Gorse again!!

  14. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:12 AM

Effing first place team with a lot of promise and ppl are effing complaining about brad lidge with Storen hurt the whole year? Gotta be effing kidding me. New ballgame with Det holding it down, Morse provided the charge the team needed, great two-out rally to have everyone focus on the game and get rid of the woe is us attitude. Get your damn natitude going ppl…

SUNSHINE.. I have soo missed the GORSE Hacking! UNKYD… where are you?

  18. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:14 AM

That HR is an assist to Davey for his talk with Morse after Sunday's game.

  19. bluejeener - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:14 AM

Checking score on line as often as possible – saw Nats had scored 2 and immediately said "I hope it was Zim or Morse". :-)

  20. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:15 AM

That was a BEAST MODE 2 run blast!!!!

  21. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:15 AM

@Mick: You win the Dr. Joyce Brothers Award for name-dropping tonight for the mention of Danny Ozark. Can you please elaborate on how the Wizard of Oze has a bearing on tonight's game, this team, Davey or Life as We Know It in the Civilized World.I eagerly await the counselor's response…

  22. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:19 AM

Wow, great catch by Danny, who also has 2 quality AB's. I thought the Pena pinning would be Det's undoing, but it was just to send a lil message to the big fella. Det's been untouchable tonight.

  23. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:21 AM

And How Nice is it tonight not to be discussing (cough, screaming about) the Umpires?

Mark Zuckerman‏@MarkZuckermanIf #Nats can draw 27,835 for Tuesday night vs. #Rays, that bodes well for attendance rest of seasonWow good numbers for the Tuesday night Rays game.

  27. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:26 AM

That is crazy good attendance numbers.

  28. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:28 AM

I am going to congratulate Ross Detwiler right now for taking back the starters job.

  29. Eugene Galvin - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:30 AM

mick – Even an ill tempered lush like me first step is admitting it.

  30. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:32 AM

That 3-1 pitch was a strike.

  31. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:34 AM

Fresh bullpen and nobody was up. Scratching my head.

  32. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:35 AM

Walk the leadoff man and walk the plank.

  33. mick - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:36 AM

I said an hour ago, assuming we give up no more runs…

  34. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:36 AM

Ump is squeezing Gonzalez. Unreal. Didn't need the ump to fall asleep.

  35. mick - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:38 AM

Gonat… the umpiring just makes me sick, Im still pissed about Sat game

  36. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:39 AM

Wow, momentum shift to the Nats!!!!

  37. mick - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:40 AM

can we get 2 runs and have Clip close this?

  38. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:40 AM

I was also SMH, but at the fact that Matsui was the PH against a lefty. Of course, I didn't want to curse anything, so I stayed quiet.Good news: Price out of the gameBetter news: Matsui grounds out for the 3rd out w/ runners @ 2nd & 3rd.

  39. SonnyG10 - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:41 AM

mick…you and me both re umpiring last Sat nite.

  40. mick - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:42 AM

the problem is we average less than 4 runs a game

  41. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:44 AM

This can get ugly. May be plunking time. Haven't seen this in years.

  42. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:44 AM

What the heck is going on with the glove? HOLY POOP the glove has been confiscated.

  43. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:44 AM

Love the gamesmanship by Davey. The Rays stalled by making the grounds crew hide the sign in the OF. Sooo, Davey using some inside knowledge from Peralta's days with Washington is used against him… Love it

  44. Candide - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:45 AM

    Wow!

  45. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:46 AM

Tampa picks on the batters eye and Davey picks on Joel Peralta's glove. This will be on all the baseball shows tonight and tomorrow. I can hear Millar now "GOT HEEEEM"

  46. Candide - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:46 AM

Welcome to WWE, where hidden foreign objects (tacks, bottle caps, razor blades, folding chairs) are a way of life.

  47. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:48 AM

Did you notice Storen popped out of the clubhouse after the ejection.

  48. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:48 AM

Wasn't Maddon on Sciosa staff back when Frank and he had that blow up?

  49. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:49 AM

Tampa announcers are speculating goop in his glove and tipped their hat to Davey.

  50. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:50 AM

    Foreign substance in his glove.

  51. UnkyD - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:50 AM

    WTH happened to Peralta?!

  52. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:51 AM

Was it a Nats game the other day where they quoted a old-time pitcher to the effect that "it's not a foreign substance, Vaseline is made in the good ole USA"?

  53. Steady Eddie - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:51 AM

Mick — You're still pissed about Saturday's game? Look at my avatar!

  54. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:51 AM

Lombo batting right handed? No Nady?

  55. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:52 AM

Interesting….Mark Zuckerman‏@MarkZuckermanPeralta ejected for foreign substance in glove. Crew chief tonight is Tim Tschida. He was also on crew in 05 for Donnelly pine tar incident.

  56. Faraz Shaikh - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:52 AM

    that's an awesome avatar.

  57. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Pathetic at-bat by Danny. Come on. Be a pro. Look at some of his pitches.

  58. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Good pull Eugene, Carp & FP were quoting Don Sutton over the weekend during a broadcast.

  59. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:54 AM

    Steady Eddie, love it! SAFE

  60. Steady Eddie - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:54 AM

Gonat, I think you may have it re Storen — who made his MLB debut in the Nats bullpen back in 2010, when Peralta was there.Very Interesting…..

  61. susanlavonne - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:55 AM

Why was Peralta ejected? At the game now and curious

  62. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:58 AM

Twitter from the Beats:Adam Kilgore‏@AdamKilgoreWPIn 2010, Joel Peralta pitched for Class AAA Syracuse, managed by current Nats first base coach Trent Jewett. Could he have known?Amanda Comak‏@acomakNats mi. lgr, here tonight RT @stevensouzajr: Literally turned to @ColinBates25 and said you should see the amount of tar Joel Peralta uses!Mark Zuckerman‏@MarkZuckermanAnother wacky coincidence: Joe Maddon was Angels' bench coach in 2005 when that Donnelly thing happened.

  63. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:59 AM

I heard there is a lining of furry material as you slip on the glove. The material is normally stitched and this had a pocket underneath to reach in where there was a sticky substance.

  64. mick - Jun 20, 2012 at 1:59 AM

everyone jumped on me when I said it was over at 5-2. We just can not score 4 or more runs a game. 3, 4 and 5 hitters are up in bottom of 9th. If this teams best players are our best players they will at least tie the game. After all that with the spit ball pitcher, we hit 3 ground balls, first tow outs on 2 pitches!

  69. CN - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:02 AM

Breaking news, here's what the umpire Enrico Polozzi found on Joel Peralta, fast forward to the 5:00 mark. Peralta's Glove.

  70. rogieshan - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:02 AM

Perfect timing for Wang to pitch himself out of a job. Oh Henry tossed a shutout inning in rehab today. Next move: Marrero in. Nady out.

  71. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:03 AM

Mick, Davey should have waited until after Lombo batted. Backfired having Lombo bat Righthanded.

Hoping a small strike zone here as Rodney can get wild.

  76. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:10 AM

Rodney with the crooked cap look, either the cap is off-center or his head is crooked.

  77. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:12 AM

Unfortunately a large strike zone. Horrible call against LaRoche. A shame.

  78. MicheleS - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:13 AM

At least it was an interesting game.

  79. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:13 AM

Loss squarely on Wang but Davey didn't have a quick enough hook. Great comeback attempt.

  80. JayB - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:15 AM

Michele…..we are past giving thanks for "interesting game" excuse for loss….bad baseball decisions by Davey and Bad Roster decisions by Rizzo……Did anyone not know Wang had nothing…..AGAIN….should have pulled him in the first inning and then cut.

  81. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:15 AM

Four in a row, at least one on Brad Lidge, at least one on CMW and at least one on Tim Timmons. Thanks, guys. So tomorrow everyone shows up with shiny, new, clean gloves?

  82. Gonat - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:20 AM

I wouldn't have pulled the hook as quick as JayB suggested in the 1st inning, but very diappointed that Davey let it get out of hand in the 3rd.

  83. Tim - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:21 AM

The checking of Peralta's glove and subsequent ejection ended our momentum. Gonzalez had just had squashed a Rays rally and the Nats run into the dugout ready to pick up the lumber. Then a 15 minute delay to check everything and everybody. You could hear a pin drop when the Nats came to the plate. All the air came out of the stadium. Not sure it was the best of moves. But we'll never know. You can bet that Strasburg and Gio will be harassed by Maddon.

  84. SonnyG10 - Jun 20, 2012 at 2:31 AM

We can still take this series. Got Stephen and Gio going next two days.
