Game 101: Nats at Brewers

Jul 29, 2012, 3:42 PM EST

US Presswire file photo
The Nationals look for a series victory this afternoon at Miller Park.

Bryce Harper has been battling a stomach virus for several days now, and it was bad enough to keep the rookie out of last night's game. He'll attempt to return to the Nationals' lineup for today's series finale at Miller Park, batting second behind Steve Lombardozzi and ahead of Ryan Zimmerman.

Gio Gonzalez gets the start for the Nats, seeking to become the first NL pitcher to reach 14 wins (only Tampa Bay's David Price has done it so far). The left-hander is coming off perhaps his best start of the season: zero earned runs, two hits in seven innings against the Mets.

A win today would catapult the Nationals to 21 games over .500 for the first time and secure a superb 5-1 road trip in advance of this week's homestand against the Phillies and Marlins.

I'm off again today, but I'll be back at the park Tuesday for the opener against Philadelphia and the trade deadline. In the meantime, enjoy today's game and discussion…

Lombo is SO clutch. Now we got the boppers coming up.

  2. Swift Eagle - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Yes, the Nats are going to continue to see squeeze plays, steals, intentional run downs, and other forms of small ball b/c the pitchers are just so difficult to hit….

  3. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:27 PM

    lets go Bryce!!!

  4. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:28 PM

    Double-steal, if Livo's not careful.

  5. Theophilus T. S. - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Another in a long line of exhibits about how bad many of the umpires are. And I never see any post-season news releases about any of these moles not being renewed.

  6. Swift Eagle - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:28 PM

How many times have we've seen Livo this year?!

  7. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:30 PM

    OK… this is the inning!!

  8. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:30 PM

    OK, never mind the steal… :) :)

  9. Swift Eagle - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Stay back Ryan, going to see a lot of slop here…

  10. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:34 PM

    Really? Double play, Ryan?

  11. Fear and Ignorance - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:36 PM

    Just awful!!!

  12. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Notice how each team handled the bases loaded situation. We have not been good with the situational hitting today. Moving over, then getting in.

  13. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:37 PM

    bummer of an inning

  14. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Does the league ever review some of these calls and discipline thes umps? What a joke.

  15. MicheleS - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:40 PM

SWM. They do review and discipline the umpires. Rhey don't announce it.

  16. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Secret wasian man said…Does the league ever review some of these calls and discipline thes umps? What a joke.I hope so

  17. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:41 PM

however, as bad as this ump crew is, we had bases loaded with zero outs and the heart of the order up came away with 1 run.

  18. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Awful inning. The king of the dp strikes again. Zimmerman not worth the $$$$

  19. MicheleS - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:42 PM

    They not Rhey.

  20. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:43 PM

Morse at 1B. First time this season? I really feel like we need to just get the heck out of Milwaukee safely at this point. No one is playing where they usually do, Flo is getting pelted. Bad mojo today.

  21. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:44 PM

agreed swami… take the split we are still 3 up on Braves and move on

  22. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:46 PM

John Smolz of all people thinks Rizzo should roll the dice with Strasburg's arm. Says we have just an average rotation without him. Well then.

  23. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:46 PM

correct if I'm wrong but is this Matthues 3rd HR he has given up in his last 4 games?

  24. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:48 PM

4-3-1! You don't see that very often!

  25. Theophilus T. S. - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:49 PM

Got to admit, rotation has looked pretty average last two games.

  26. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:49 PM

I said Mattheus is over-used/hurting or whatever and should be the one sent down now that Storen is up to form. I got plenty of laughs.

  27. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:49 PM

Put down the shades of grey book and learn to pitch.

  28. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:50 PM

    I like Lombo!

  29. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:50 PM

Ouch, that homer hurt. I had the feeling we could come back, but not now. Ok, 2-2 split on the road, and a 5-2 road trip. I'll take it. Bring it home guys and let's put a nail in the Phillie's coffin. Nice stretch by Morse! He can still play there it appears.

  30. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:51 PM

Good Morse stretch on that one… Mattheus has been excellent until recently, he knows how to pitch. So you have to ask, has he tweaked something.

  31. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Sec 222 – really? Just goes to show he doesn't actually watch. Strasburg has how many of those 60 wins? All 60 you say? Seriously – this series has been very bipolar for both teams. Excellent last 8 or 9 days for the Nats, though. They can chew on a little humble pie on their off day before facing some more teams they are supposed to dominate because they have under .500 records. they will need to come out sharp this week. And can we please get Bryce's tummy all better, ALR's back in shape and ice all over Flores? The walking wounded.

  32. Theophilus T. S. - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:52 PM

What really irks is when they stink against these sore-armed newbies. These are games they ought to at least win 8-6.

  33. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:53 PM

Excuse me? JZ did not look "average" yesterday. You are maybe thinking of Detwiler?

  34. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:53 PM

Well, we really did beat ourselves, with the help of the blues, assuming that we don't score four here.Whatever happens, we're still in first. This is going to be a ride not to be forgotten over the next two months! Morse had two nice plays at first there.

  35. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:54 PM

Three game lead is ok. But man I really hate the philthies. Thanks for nothing!

  36. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:55 PM

Anybody that thinks AAA stats mean any thing for anybody other than 22 – 24 yo players in the developemental stage do not know how these guys are judged.

  37. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Danny, this guy is not throwing strikes. STOP SWINGING.

  38. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:57 PM

swami – Seriously. Then Darling said the Znn precedent was based in part on the fact that we were out of the pennant race by September last year. And that you have to take your shot for winning it all when you get it. I'm very surprised two former pitchers have this view. Surely they remember Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, etc. Luckily, it's not their decision to make.

  39. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Espinosa is back to his old bad habits at the plate left handed.

  40. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:58 PM

looks like Espi wants to leave Milwaukee

  41. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:59 PM

All right, Bernie. Boy do I wish Danny would take a pitch once in while!

  42. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:59 PM

love the shark and if we lose by 2 runs, thank Esterbrook for the 1st inning.

  43. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Steve Lombardozzi has had a fantastic game today. He is playing very well.We miss Desi, but losing him could have hurt a lot more.

  44. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Well, at least there's half-priced Papa John's pizza tomorrow. :)

  45. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:01 PM

baseballswami said…Steve Lombardozzi has had a fantastic game today. He is playing very well.We miss Desi, but losing him could have hurt a lot more.Lombo getting this kind of time will help out a great deal in October

  46. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:03 PM

Likes like there might be some crow ready to go in the oven.

  47. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:03 PM

Wow. I have no respect for brewer fan. That's awful to booooooooo like that. Bunch of drunks

  48. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:07 PM

OK Corey…. that's how you get peoples attention and warrant more playing time.

  49. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:08 PM

Hmm, Axford looking for a five out save. We can get him next inning if Harper doesn't come through.I'll be happy to eat crow today.

  50. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:08 PM

    TIE GAME~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEVER SAY DIE!!!

  51. MicheleS - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:09 PM

    NOT DEAD YET!

  52. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:10 PM

Darling called that wild pitch/passed ball two pitch before it happened. Said the new catcher who came in on a double switch might not be warmed up.

  53. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:10 PM

I like my crow cooked at, or near, 600.

  54. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:12 PM

JoeS — As peric will tell you, crow is a dish best served cold.

  55. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:13 PM

And it is quite delicious, too. This got interesting in a big hurry.

  56. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:13 PM

Is something wrong with Burnett? I was sure he was coming in. We have an off-day tomorrow.

  57. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:14 PM

    Arggghhh!

  58. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Ok Davey, enough already. You seriously left a guy in who'd given up not one, but two dingers?

  59. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:15 PM

NatsLady – was just about to say that was a bit insecure with Ryan Mattheus and wished it was Burnett, but…..well, Ryan gave them a generous gift.

  60. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:15 PM

    What the f*******? Davey?

  61. SCNatsFan - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:16 PM

And this outing shows why Mattheus will be optioned and Henry will stay

  62. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:16 PM

    Bring in H-Rod!!

  63. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Yikes – 3 today and he stayed in after 2?

  64. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:17 PM

SC– I said that and got laughed at.

  65. JD - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:17 PM

Ugly game from beginning to end. Do we have another comeback in us?

  66. Candide - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:17 PM

I would have emptied a gallon of bourbon and Maalox by now except that I have yard work to do after the game.

  67. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:18 PM

Never thought I would want to see Henry. Mattheus did give up 3 today, right? Have we ever had a reliever do that?

  68. JD - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:19 PM

THe lesson from this game is that if you have Burnett, Storen and Clippard you shouldn't use Mattheus in a tie game in the 8th inning. I don't think you will see this again.

  69. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:20 PM

Wow really, we keep Mathews out of this game we would have won. This ones on davey. Yuckkkkkkkkkk

  70. SCNatsFan - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:21 PM

NatsLady, its either him or Stammen. They have invested too much in Henry to let him go for nothing. One of the two gets optioned and recalled when rosters expand, stays on the roster for the playoffs, Henry gets the winter and spring training to try to get his mind in shape.

  71. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:22 PM

I have to guess Davey's reasoning is that if he uses Burnett for the 8th and we don't score, then he has to use Gorzy for the 9th and risk him giving up a walk-off. But sheesh, after the first HR, you have to take Mattheus out. This is really hard on Stammen who hasn't been great with inherited runners recently.

  72. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:22 PM

JD – agreed on the ugly assessment. From start to finish, ugly stuff. Nice comeback in the 8th , more rookie love, but lots of ugly to go around. How do you keep a guy in that is serving it up when there is an off day tomorrow?

  73. Eugene in Oregon - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:24 PM

So, I stepped away for a while to take my daughter to the pool. Am I to understand that the Nats tied it at 7-7, but have now fallen behind again?

  74. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:24 PM

We beat ourselves all darned day, with a bit of help from the blues.Oh, yeah, I said that when it was7-3. Ryan Mathheus has been pretty good all year. Craig Stammen looked bad last outing, too.

  75. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:25 PM

Tommorow an off day. Why oh why would you not do what we have been doing. Brunette….. Sit down davey and quit over managing. Again yuckkkkkk

  76. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:25 PM

SCNats, I understand Stammen or Mattheus is going down. And between them, I said it was Mattheus. That's what I meant.

  77. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Eugene- yes- fantastic come back in the 8th to tie it at seven. Mattheus then served up his 2cd and 3rd of the day to make it 9-7.

  78. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:30 PM

All this double switching so that Mattheus and Stammen could pitch another inning. Never thought I'd say this, but it feels like Davey overmanaged this one. Except that he undermanaged in leaving Mattheus in. Ugh.

  79. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:30 PM

I get sick of the "this one's on Davey." This on is on Espinosa. This one is on Gio. This one is on Flores. This one is on Mattheus. This one is on Ryan Zimmerman. It's not just on Johnson. That statement is ignorant.

  80. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Plenty of blame to go around, but all the folks you mentioned had failures of execution. Frustrating, but it happens. Davey inexplicably left Mattheus in for a second inning after he had given up a homer. And then left him in again (!!) after he gave up a second one. It's not ignorant to say its on him. It's accurate.

  81. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

If your sick of those comments and you keep reading then you are the ignorant one sir.

  82. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    tie game again.

  83. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    MORSE!!!!!!!

  84. Candide - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    GORSE!!!

  85. JD - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    Oh my god.

  86. Eugene in Oregon - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    swami – thanks.Mr. Morse – thanks.

  87. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:34 PM

And this one is not freaking on Davey Johnson.

  88. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:35 PM

That crow tastes so good, I think I'll have a second serving please.

  89. Drew - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:35 PM

    Sweet Fancy Gorse Hackage!

  90. djinFl. - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:36 PM

I am with you SwamiAnd we are still in First place.

  91. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:37 PM

(sigh) and Danny strikes out for a change… No, I'm not putting this on Davey. But now we are in a hole, tie game away from home. Can't imagine how they are feeling in Atlanta…

  92. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Can a reliever get two blown saves in one game ? Clutchiness to the max!

  93. Secret wasian man - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:39 PM

Sea head. You are correct. This is an blog and when people watch their emotions will take over. That's to be expected. Not everyone reacts the same but we all luv are nats

  94. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:39 PM

    Stammen?

  95. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:39 PM

Ok Craig, I really do not want to see a walkoff here. Give our lineup a chance to win it.

  96. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:40 PM

House money now, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, Stammen. He has to do this–because he will have to do it in September and October.

  97. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:42 PM

Agree on house money NL. Like I said before, I'll take a 5-2 roadtrip any day. To pull this out would be pretty great though.

  98. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:44 PM

    Nice job there, Craig!!

  99. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:45 PM

And I really still do want to know if Axford will get dinged with 2 blown saves today. Stat- wise – can that happen?

  100. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:45 PM

I don't agree Davey overmanaged this game. Just wish he had taken Mattheus out sooner, but that's hindsight.

  101. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:46 PM

I love that the Nats play 27 outs every game. Or 30…. or what ever it takes.

  102. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Ok, in hindsight , who should you have brought in? Keep in mind you have 17games in 16days coming up. Storen, after last night? Burnett after last night? Gorzolony? Henry? Think about it. In hindsight Davey looks bad, but like I said, overall Mattheus has been reliable this year. He wasn't today. But we need a lot of innings from all of these guys over the next two and half weeks.

  103. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Natsjack- totally agree. Nats have had an outstanding week and even though they know they are going home, they just keep on keeping on. Very proud of them. Valiant effort. Good habits, good bulldog mentality.

  104. Eugene in Oregon - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:54 PM

swami,Re the two blown save question: In the ninth, he was the pitcher of record at that point (i.e., he would have been the winning pitcher if he had held on). He wasn't brought into the game to save the game for another pitcher. So no, if I understand the rule correctly, it wasn't a save situation and thus he can't be charged with a second blown save.

  105. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:55 PM

Burnett and Storen should both be available, but looking at a tie game, as I said, if you bring him in for the 8th and don't score in the bottom of the 8th you are in the same situation we are in now. Basically, Davey had to see if Mattheus could go two innings.

  106. Candide - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:56 PM

swami – did a little research, found this: "Impossible situation. After you blow the save, if your team comes back to score you're in line for the WIN, not the save."

  107. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Sorry, meant Burnett and Clippard should both be available.

  108. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Oh come on JS. Do you seriously believe that Davey had no other option but to leave Mattheus in? How about bringing in Stammen? Or Burnett (he pitched last night, but not on Friday). Storen pitched last night, but Gonzales didn't. Nor did Gorzo. I know everyone worries about Gorzo, but after Mattheus gave up his 2nd homer, woud you really not take a chance on Gorzo over Mattheus? And we have an off day tomorrow, so everyone will be fresh for the Phillies. Some nights a pitcher just doesn't have it. Mattheus didn't and he should not have been left in to lose the game for us. Thankfully Morse saved our bacon. Let's hope this discussion is completely academic soon.

  109. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:05 PM

Really, Blue? That call on DeRosa stunk!

  110. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Morse delivers again. Two run double!

  111. Drew - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:09 PM

Mr. Everything, nice to see you.Sweet fancy Wlliam Wallace, that's some beautiful Gorse Hackage!

  112. Eugene in Oregon - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:10 PM

I'd feel a lot more comfortable with another run or two.

  113. MicheleS - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM

NatsJack.. As you said.. UNTIL THE VERY LAST OUT PEOPLE!I am laying odds that in the Atlanta clubhouse and all around Georgia, their are a LOT of curse words being said right now!

  114. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM

So–their most effective reliever was Livo?

  115. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:15 PM

Hit it in the air, Flo. Just like you did that last time.

  116. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM

    Sac fly please?

  117. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM

What NatsLady said. I'd take a sac fly.

  118. peric - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Natslady still want Werth in right field instead of Morse, Moore or even Corey Brown? Still don't like Morse's fielding? Still think Werth is a better substitute?

  119. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:20 PM

sac fly, no way. I want a grand slam.

  120. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:25 PM

I will settle for 3 outs.

  121. Candide - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:25 PM

    Three outs on three batters!

  122. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:26 PM

    peric, yes.Oh, Clipp.

  123. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:27 PM

LOL not now, Clippard. Not now.

  124. djinFl. - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:28 PM

To bad Hart didn't get the bunt down

  125. MicheleS - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:28 PM

OY CLIPP!!! get the 3 frickin outs

  126. peric - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:30 PM

Tyler Clippard career average xFIP 4.55 … pushing over 4,00 toward that career average created by bad Clip.

I have to say, though, I'm not sure LaRoche would have been long enough to get that one.

So Braun dawdles and we get the extra run–which we end up needing! What Danny doesn't do at the plate he does with his glove! Morse, etc… Not enough words.

  148. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Morse gets POG. Two clutch hits and some good plays at first. Stammen an honorable mention. That's some serious pressure-filled long relief.

  160. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:52 PM

Ray Knight just analyzed that Morse/RZ play where Braun scored. Plenty of blame to go around but I think they laid it about 50-50 between them.

  162. Theophilus T. S. - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Blown calls, blown plays, blown opportunities — and they still win. Karma? A blessing from the baseball gods for not doing something stoopid before the trade deadline? They clearly need a good night's sleep. They are going to be adding pieces at the deadline, without trading anyone. And isn't it ironic (?) that two of the biggest contributors are likely to be in the minors in a week or two?Maybe ironic isn't the right word but it's starting to feel like they've got a 28-29 man roster.

  163. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 10:57 PM

So my wife talks me into going to Mass at 7-3, I come out of church and its 9-9 and I watch the rest. I get re cap… my only question and maybe it was answered is when Nats tied it at 7-7, why was Mattheus still in and not say Stammen then?any way, what an amazing team and I conclude with give me a B, give me a E, give me a A, give me a S, give me a T, whats that spell B-E-A-S-T!!!!

Great scene from the movie Moonstruck: [Loretta accepts to marry Ronny instead of Ronny's brother Johnny, her ex-fiancé, in front of her family. Loretta's grandfather, the Old Man, starts to cry] Cosmo Castorini: What's the matter, Pop? Old Man: [crying] I'm confused! After this game, that's exactly how I feel. A mind-boggling game.

  169. natsfan1a - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:04 PM

I guess I should also tip my cap to Stammen and to Clip, who did get to three outs with the lead intact, even if it was very, er, exciting. The funniest part was the Mattheus-Morse hugout in the dugout. I'm pretty sure that a bunch of pitchers owe some position players steaks, but I lost count. :-)Mick, your question wasn't answered that I saw, but I didn't watch the postgame.natsfan1a said… Haven't read the thread but, as the skipper might say, holy moly! 175. Gonat - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:10 PM

All in all, it was a gutsy win but just scratching my noggin with another lousy performance by Gio. 5 walks and he didn't field his position well today including that crazy Zim play where Braun scored. It could have been worse as Braun just missed a HR in another at-bat and you also have to consider Nats-killer Aramis Ramirez wasn't in the starting lineu-up.So much for thinking this was going to be an easy win after Greinke was traded and Gio didn't have to face Aramis.

  176. natsfan1a - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:10 PM

Thanks, Mick.SWM, yeah, I'm pretty sure that my blood pressure was sky high at the end there. Good that your mom is okay.

Gonat… I think Gio let the Umpire get the best of him.. In fact, Davey and the bench let the ump have it in the 5th

FYI:Jerry Crasnick, baseball writer for ESPN.com, tweeted on Saturday that there are discussions taking place between the Dodgers and Cubs that would send Dempster to L.A. in exchange for 25-year-old pitcher Josh Lindblom:also, Hunter Pence is also rumored to be possibly traded

    agreed Gonat

  182. Gonat - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:16 PM

By the way, that Espi play on Nyjer may have been the play of the day with that great scoop by Morse. Can't overlook the defense.

  183. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:17 PM

    oh yes… Espi's play and BEASTS's scoop

  184. baseballswami - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Gio just missing, terrible umpiring, then he gets freaked out. I said at the beginning of the game that he and Det just have to figure that out – with Henry, maybe? After that the wackiness ensued and didn't let up. Not to be lost, though – Lombo played out of his mind, Corey Brown is the real deal, Espi has a gun, Morse is back to being the beast, Craig Stammen was awesome, and this team just never, ever, ever quits! Would somebody please give Flo a very gentle hug? That guy just gets hammered.

  185. Gonat - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Mick – Dempster has given up 7 earned over his last 2 starts. Maybe a blip, maybe a trend, maybe trouble.Dempster's career numbers which is a lengthy only includes 2 Ace type seasons. Also consider he is 35.With all that said, I would take him here as a Veteran who still seems to have some Ace left in him and still leads the Majors in ERA.

  186. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:24 PM

swami… lets give him a group hug, lol

  187. Drew - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:24 PM

At Syracuse Lannan got torched, giving up 13 hits and six earned in 3.1 innings. Not a good audition for next weekend's twin bill.Ryan Perry throws 6 scoreless innings for Harrisburg. His ERA is 1.82. This experiment is getting interesting.Jason Martinson homered again. He now has 10 homers at Potomac to go with his 10 at Hagerstown. At the two levels combined he has 96 RBIs to go with his 20 home runs.

With 387 comments, there isnt much I can say that hasnt already been said. But not withstanding, WHAT A GAME!!! Love these Nats!!Lookout Philly, here we come!

  189. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:26 PM

Gonat true, but how much of that could be that he is distracted?

  190. NatsLady - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:26 PM

Look at Clipp's line in the box score. All 1's.

  191. Section 222 - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:26 PM

NL, I saw the Ray Knight recap too. Much more blame to Zim, as it should be. Morse's bad throw just meant that Hart might have ended up on second. Zim's bad play let the run score. Morse is not responsible for that.mick — you're absolutely right — Mattheus should not have pitched in the 8th. At the very least he should have been pulled after the 1st homer in that inning. But hey, big time screwups by Zim and Davey and we still win. The rest of the team picked them up. Excellent!!

  192. Joe Seamhead - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:27 PM

OK, we won't all agree on why Matheus was left in, but percentages on the righty/lefty matchups say that he would get each of those guys out. Hindsight is 20/20 is a cliche, but looking back it was a bad move, however,a good manager plays his gut, a great one plays both his gut and the statistical probabilities. Nobody bats a thousand, but Johnson approaches it. We agree to disagree, but following my percentage argument, I'm going with Davey Johnson's judgement 99% of the time over mine, or some poster that only seems to pipe in with negative comments. As far as the over-managing issue, much of it revolved around ALR needing to come out. Davey wasn't doing a Gigggleman thing with being cute, and over thinking it. Every move was calculated, and made perfect sense, IMO.

  193. SCNatsFan - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:28 PM

I have to say if the pitch track on TBS was correct then the ump did a horrible job.I can just see the Braves kicking a can or two watching the end of this one.

  194. Gonat - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Drew, its AAA which matters to the people in Syracuse and Davey said before he doesn't care. What we don't know is whether Lannan was specifically told to work on some pitches and maybe was told to take it easy. On paper, it looks bad, but we should only care what he does for the Nats and his win last week was as clutch as it gets.

  195. mick - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:30 PM

Davey could go with Perry in the double header, just see what happens, that would be a good time to find out

  196. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:35 PM

Not concerned about Mattheus. He is over-cooking his fastball causing it to flatten out.More concerned about him pitching 2nd innings.

  197. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:40 PM

I have heard that name, Jason Martinson for the first time.

  198. natsfan1a - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:42 PM

I was saying to my husband during the game that they were going to give Davey a heart attack. Hope he has a strong ticker. :-)Seamhead, good point on ALR coming out. I noticed after he reached first earlier in the game that he seemed to reach his hand over towards his side or back, and I remembered that after he'd been pulled.Gonat said… Kardiac Kids gave Davey some "more gray hairs" as he said in his post-game. July 29, 2012 7:13 PM

  199. NatsFanChris - Jul 29, 2012 at 11:42 PM

I think today really sealed the deal on the last man standoff between Mattheus and Stammen.Corey Brown sure does look good. With Brown, Moore and Werth soon to return it seems like we have more OFs than we know what to do with.I think they let ALR go next year, move Morse to 1st (where he looked great last year) and have either Brown starting in Center or Moore starting in Left. Hard to say which would be preferable. Brown has the edge on D, but Moore seems to have the bigger bat (as of today)
