Game 122: Braves at Nats

Aug 20, 2012, 7:50 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
The Nats open a big, three-game series against the Braves tonight.

One of several national baseball writers who is here tonight just asked me for the last time Washington played in a series as big as this one. My answer: 1945, the last time the Senators were in a pennant race (they finished 1 1/2 games behind the Tigers for the AL title).

Yes, it's been awhile since D.C. has hosted anything along these lines, with the first-place Nationals trying to hold off the second-place Braves over the next three nights and perhaps extend their five-game lead to even greater numbers.

We've got a great pitching matchup to kick this series off: Jordan Zimmermann starts for the Nats against Braves ace Tim Hudson. All the healthy regulars are in both teams' lineups. All that's left to do is play the games.

Check back here, of course, for updates and analysis throughout…

The Braves will give it all they've got. They may even have been looking past the Dodgers to this series, and saw themselves slip another notch. Chipper is their emotional trump card. They will do everything they can not to let him down. Our guys are ready. JZ is always ready. While the offense is young, they are tough, too. The kid is as tough as anyone else out there. They will give the Braves all they can handle. It's for games like this that Rizzo signed Werth to go with Zim. ALR is Mr. Cool at all times. An effective mix of youth and exuberance with experience and savvy.Bring it on.

Wonk, sorry I didn't give you credit for your answer. I just wondered if there was an actual rule, and I'm more and more becoming convinced there isn't, that Bud and the boys just hoped it wouldn't happen. Hopefully they're right. The guys on TV (or radio? perhaps even it was Charlie and Dave) were certainly discussing it as if there were an explicit rule. Because they were phrasing it as: "and there's even a way that there could be two single game playoffs on consecutive days", and went on to describe the scenario that you were talking about. (I see the same thing at the ESPN link cited above. I.e., the questioner presumes the answer already — which is why, again, I'm sure there is already a rule on this. And no matter what we think of Bud — I'm sure it a bunch of stat guys were involved in crafting the wording, and I'm sure they thought of it)

  19. Steady Eddie - Aug 20, 2012 at 8:36 PM

Nats Lady, thanks for all the accessibility tips. I'm taking my 90 year old mother to her first Nats game vs the Cards on the Sept 1 afternoon game, and am planning to spring for the $25 Yards parking across the street from the park, and to ask before then about access via the underground ramp to our seats (which are at the bottom of sec 135, with a bathroom just up the ramp). She can do a few steps and we'll plan to put her walker on the back wall of the ramp and hope the weather is good. Or get the ADA seats at the back of the section under cover if it's not.

  21. sjm308 - Aug 20, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Will be leaving soon. Should be a great pitching match-up. Hope our lads have their hitting shoes on. Would love to see Bryce continue his hot streak. The more I look at this lineup the more excited I get. Werth & Harper look at lots of pitches, draw walks if they are given and set the table for our next 3. If Desmond can just get back to where he was before the injury and Danny keeps improving we really have a tough 1-7. Suzuki is struggling but even that could change. As I look though, Atlanta is just as strong. This should be a great series. Does anyone know when their rookie SS comes off the dl? He was a difference maker for them.Go Nats!!

  27. A DC Wonk - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Fascinating comment by Boz about Davey and Eckstein:Davey Johnson (again) said for a year "This should be a very good offense." It's developed almost exactly as he expected. But, and he didn't say this at the time but has acknowledged it recently, he had to change the organization's hitting "philosophy" from "let the bals travel" and hit a lot to the opposite field __which he absolutely hates and thinks is discredited and ridciulous__ into "hit the ball where it is pitched…get the bat head out…DRIVE the ball (to all fields)."Espinosa, for one, feels like he's been released from a straight jacket. It took him a while. He and Desmond are among the Davey projects. As I've said, Eckstein is excellent and can teach whatever you want taught. But it's not his job to set organizational philosophy. It never occurred to be before that _Eckstein_ was told a hitting philosophy to teach, rather than the other way around. But that was Boz is saying here.Thoughts?

Wonk, sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me. Who was setting the organization's "hitting philosophy"? Riggleman? Rizzo? Kasten? Ted Lerner? Was that philosophy followed throughout the organization? For how long? Did Acta have one too? Assuming there was such a thing, did Davey change it? When? When did he become aware of it and why didn't he stamp it out the minute he was in charge? Did he know about it before he took over? Why didn't he say something? Did Eckstein think it was a good idea? Does he have no underlying philosophy or approach, so whatever a manager says is the philosophy he will blindly teach even if he thinks its garbage? So we're supposed to believe that players followed a hitting philosophy dictated by Riggleman or someone else, and taught by Eckstein, and then Eckstein changed on instructiions from Davey, and it took a whole season for the new philosophy to take hold. Fun yarn for Davey to spin, but I'm not buying it. Too many holes and unanswered questions.

  31. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:26 PM

DC Wonk, philosophies evolve over time. Having Michael Morse back is huge for this team. The fear of 400 ft HRs was generally missing and pitchers had the ability to back Nats batters into pitching outside to go oppo and taking their chances. Now the batters and especially Werth can fit into more traditional roles while also working to each players strengths like Espi and Desi. The stats prove out what Morse has meant to the team production.

  32. A DC Wonk - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:29 PM

222 — I'd agree with you — except that we also know that Davey is a big supporter of Eckstein. So, we have the conflicting notions that: (a) Davey changed the hitting philosophy; and (b) he supports Eckstein. The obvious question is: why does/did he support Eckstein if he disagreed completely with Eck's approach. The only answer that makes sense is that it wasn't Eck's approach. But what you say makes sense, too.Which is why I'm confused.

  33. momcd87 - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:29 PM

lombardozzi should be in the lineup! he was the hottest hitter before davey sat him before the mets series…

  34. Gonat - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:30 PM

Ghost, I think having Morse and Zim hitting in the same lineup is the answer and adding a leadoff guy like Werth is like getting a July 31st trade done.

  35. A DC Wonk - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:31 PM

Werth & Harper look at lots of pitches, draw walks if they are given and set the table for our next 3.Indeed. And the stats back that up: Werth takes more pitches than anyone else. Harper is 2d on the team in walks.

  36. baseballswami - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:31 PM

Z-Mantis – agreed with the shut-up thing! I actually think it might be dying down a little. Oh – wait – who is pitching tomorrow?

  37. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:31 PM

Add in a healthy Zim who isn't afraid to drive the away pitch to right field again to Morse and you got all kinds oh philosophical changes.

  38. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:31 PM

Davey has been the 2nd batting coach but is the first and last word on this team. The youngsters are his private project.

  42. baseballswami - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:34 PM

faraz – hudson has been pitching out of his mind lately. This won't be easy. But then, sometimes it seems like the Nats have trouble with young pitchers who have just come up and then they hit the pitchers with big reps. It's odd.

  46. peric - Aug 20, 2012 at 9:55 PM

Davey knows what he's doing. Lombo did his job as a super sub filling in when Desi was out.And Davey got Lombardozzi the 300+ at bats that he promised the FO he would ensure he received this season as the supersub. So, everyone except perhaps for Lombo is happy. Clearly Lombo won't be unhappy playing for a winning team.

Hudson is a very good pitcher, and he's been pitching well lately. For me, this is the house money game. If we lose, we have Stras tomorrow and the lefty Det on Wednesday so can still win the series. If we lose, we will demoralize the Braves by beating their ace.

  53. baseballswami - Aug 20, 2012 at 10:08 PM

peric – how long will everyone stay happy if Desi doesn't start hitting and Lombo is riding the pine? Will Lombo really be the only unhappy person? ( By the way, he doesn't seem like a whiner at all).I thought winning was supposed to come first at this point of the season. Desi was our mvp before the DL stint. Can he do the job today? Don't get me wrong – I love the guy and have for a long time, but can you rehab in the line up during a pennant race? I hope he gets that first hit out of the way in his first ab – facing Hudson, no less. How many ab's can it go, though? If the rest of the line up can carry him until he finds his stroke, then ok. Seems like there might be a little tick tock tick tock on this one. Cheering for the guy for his sake and for the sake of the entire team. Hope it happens very soon.

The Nats can handle Hudson. Look at the left handers that have handled the Nats lately, most recently Niese. No, I have a better feeling about the matchup tonite over facing Maholm and Medlen.

  57. MicheleS - Aug 20, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Swami, deep breathes buddy. This is a TEAM. Everyone is pulling for each other. I am sure Davey will get Lombo at bats. He just needs to take some time to get Desi going. He can afford to do that with Werth/Morse/Espi/RZ hitting. Plus Jordan and Stras can hit. They are all happy to be playing for a winning team (you know we have one here in DC!!!!!)

To me the term "organizational philosophy" would indicate a broader focus, as in throughout the MLB team and its affiliates vs. referring to the MLB team only. But that's spoken as an editorial type rather than as a journalist, an FO type, or a mind reader type. The person who would know what Boz is saying is probably Boz. The rest of us can only guess. :-)A DC Wonk said…But it's not his job to set organizational philosophy. It never occurred to be before that _Eckstein_ was told a hitting philosophy to teach, rather than the other way around. 222, Eck is not the boss when it comes to hitting philosophy, and never has been. He's like a teacher in a school, he operates under the principal's auspices not as a freelancer. The organization (FO, manager, player development guys) determines the hitting policy and Eck is capable of teaching whatever way they want. Davey has said as much. It's probably the case that before Davey was manager the org's policy was either incoherent or inconsistent. Riggleman was known to brag about how he didn't know nothin' 'bout pitching and norhin' 'bout hitting. He clearly had no input into hitting philosophy, so Eck was probably taking direction from many sources and trying to sort it all out. Davey is not like that. He has taken charge and put his own stamp on it. But it's not an overnight process. Takes a while to filter down to the play on the field.

  69. natsfan1a - Aug 20, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Michele, most of what we already know, very nicely encapsulated. In particular, that if Rizzo reversed course at this point it would put the lie to his whole career as a scout and general manager. Mentioned Giolito. Agreed that he was surprised at the amount of hate and venom spewed by outsiders at the Nats, said the fans and media here know what is being built.Explained about the "fallback plan" (Lannan, etc.); reminded everyone that in the spring we had more starters than we knew what to do with (before injury to CMW) and Rizzo planned all along for the shutdown by having "reserves."Then he went on about Gio and especially JZ… I assume a link will be up soon.

  87. Candide - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:04 PM

Okay, I have a Nats jacket (old, pre-curly-W logo), a few t shirts from giveaways. Cunegonde has an old-style jersey with her last name stitched on the back over the number 7 (she liked Pudge), and we both have a blue alternate home jersey (with the stars and stripes curly W).But we don't have a single red jersey between us, and since we've already put down our $$$ for playoff tix, we need to step up. Nats Park has to be a sea of red in October.

  90. MicheleS - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Candide, I stepped up and bought a Harper/Blue Stars and Stripes Jersey. I plan on wearing it in St Louis at the end of September, since they all wear red. I have the Werth/Espinosa Jerseys for home games

  92. peric - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:16 PM

peric – how long will everyone stay happy if Desi doesn't start hitting and Lombo is riding the pine? Will Lombo really be the only unhappy person? ( By the way, he doesn't seem like a whiner at all).I thought winning was supposed to come first at this point of the season. Desi was our mvp before the DL stint. Can he do the job today? It isn't as if Desmond is Chipper Jones been there done that like Jayson Werth. Like Lombo he is still developing and just now coming into his own before the injury. Now he's back.Lombo is supposed to be somewhat unhappy … just like Tyler Moore … a guy geared up to be a starter is never happy on the bench. And both of those players have always started. But neither player is a "whiner". They are both hard workers and will hopefully keep pushing the envelope.

Absolutely – I don't think I have ever known a team that is so full of unselfish players. Only point I was trying to make is that if you are in a pennant race, how long can you wait for someone to rehab in the games? And also – sitting a hot hitter for a long time just seems like a waste of some people on bases that could be potential runs. I mean, loyalty is one thing, but it's not a charity out there when it's almost September.

At our elementary you had to memorize states and capitals and write them over and over if you misbehaved. My younger bro is a whiz at them, fwiw. :-)Speaking of family and totally OT, just as my first paragraph was, RIP Phyllis Diller. One of my mom's faves and a gal with a great, booming laugh, which my mom had as well. Perhaps they're entertaining each other somewhere now. I can almost hear them.

  132. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:25 AM

I'm not sure Hudson saw that ball very well; it almost looked like he got his hand on it accidentally, not trying to catch it. But it does seem every time the Nats hit a ball off the pitcher, it goes straight to a fielder.

And **THAT's** why Davey played Desi all weekend. Sure, it was re-hab. But it was re-hab in a hurry, so that he'd be ready for the Braves. (And Davey probably also guestimated that against the Mets he could afford going 0-for-11 — if it helped him get ready for the Braves).

  150. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:32 AM

  160. baseballswami - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:37 AM

It was never Desi vs Lombo. It was Desi doing no rehab starts. Trust me – no one is happier about Desi hitting than I am.

It was never Desi vs Lombo. It was Desi doing no rehab starts. Trust me – no one is happier about Desi hitting than I am.I get it. My point only was, Davey was probably thinking: "Hey — it's against the Mets — let's do the rehab up here, hopefully speed up the process, and see if he's ready for the Braves"

  164. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:41 AM

It was a fair question, Desi was 0-11 and Lombo had been hot…another example of "In Davey we Trust"…

  165. baseballswami - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:41 AM

Question – is Jordan on his regular five days or more? Seems like he is always too strong on extra rest and doesn't pitch well. Hope he settles down. 45 pitches should make him tired enough for the ball to sink. We always think of him as being so stoic, but he has not been in this spot before – maybe with the rain delay he is a little amped up. So he is human after all.

  166. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:43 AM

  172. A DC Wonk - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:47 AM

In the irony department — after all the talk about how Werth and Harper see so many pitches, and take so many walks . . . in the bottom of the first they tied the game, on a double and a single, in the first four pitches of the game.

  173. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 21, 2012 at 12:49 AM

Rain Delay Question;Yesteraday Gio Had control problems. Davey mentioned that he had warmed up at 12:30 and again at 3 and felt that impacted him.Is Jordan having the same problem with the rain delay? Would he have warmedup early and sat there with the delay?

    Timmy fears Jordan's power!

  204. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:20 AM

Doubt Jordan gets through 6 unless he gets a quick inning here.

  205. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:21 AM

I see the official scorer didn't learn his lesson. That was a much easier play than Morse's hit that turned into an error. Janish should have been on, on an error. J Zim needs to get his agent to complain that is unearned run with the error.JZim same problem as Gio yesterday, way too many pitches per inning. Wish these guys could cut the number down, as our bullpen is eay overused.

  206. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:21 AM

If he is in control, Davey may let him go longer.

  207. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:22 AM

I had the same question as F&I.One reason I could think of is that wanting to start next inning with an out. Not sure if it makes sense, but Janish is not exactly league average hitter so you expect him to make an out and then next inning starts with the pitcher hitting so that provides greater likelihood of starting an inning on a right foot.Anyways, glad JZ decided to trust his stuff and went with it. Only if Danny could make that play. Still leading 4-2.

  208. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:22 AM

That's the type of defense you expect from the Nats. Way to go Jayson.

  209. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:23 AM

What if Janish ends up with a 57 game hitting streak?

  210. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:23 AM

Time for a steady diet of low in the zone. Nats need a DP here.

  211. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:23 AM

    Prado is a pure hitter.

  212. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:24 AM

So much for low in the zone. Horrible pitch.

  213. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:26 AM

I'm hoping he gets through five tied, at this point.

  214. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:27 AM

Was that not where Zuki was set up? Or did I miss something? In any case, Zimnn is probably done after this inning. Would be nice if we could get him the win.

  215. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:27 AM

I don't understand why they aren't pounding the outside?

  216. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:27 AM

    oh man!

  217. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:28 AM

They need to change that chain-link fence wall before somebody gets badly hurt.

August 20, 2012 9:27 PM ________________________________Set in a little more. Like I said where has the strategy been to work them outside.

  219. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:29 AM

Lettin them back in. Not good. Our hitters better get back on the stick. 4 in the first inning and 1 since. Desi's second at bat could have beem a big one had it been a few few feet to the left, but it wasn;'t. So time to concentrate again.

  220. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:30 AM

Jordan bad tonight. Hudson rolling now. Not looking good.

  221. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:31 AM

I don't understand why they aren't pounding the outside?Either 1) he's trying to, and missing; or 2) he doesn't trust his control, and doesn't want to be wild over the plate (again) at that height. Just my guess. Either that, or they weren't planning on pitching those particular hitters that way.

  222. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:32 AM

Agreed about the fence – pad it, and put the out-of-town scoreboard over the Red Porch.

  223. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:32 AM

Zimm bad tonight. Hudson rolling. Not looking good.

  224. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:34 AM

    Secret, happy thoughts please :-)

  225. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:36 AM

Mr mooooooomentum has changed. What a shame to blow that lead. Now gorzzo? Goodnight.

  226. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:36 AM

4 hits in the first inning. 1 since. Come on guys concentrate.

  227. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:39 AM

Momentum changes a lot in this series this year. we had a 9-0 lead and gave that away.. We had 3 run lead we gave that away, however we lead the series. Strange.

  228. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:39 AM

How close was Morse on knocking that out.

  229. NatsNut - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:40 AM

    DON'T WALK LEADOFF GUYS!!!!!

  230. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:40 AM

Come on Gorzo. The guy has never hit you.

  231. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:41 AM

This is what they mean by "dogfights." We get two and half more games of this.

  232. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:42 AM

You know how big that non-play was by Danny on Janish's little liner to him, if it was an out then Hudson would have led off the next inning.

  233. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:43 AM

Davey throws in the white flag I see Gorxzy who is good for at least one run it seens in close games is in.

  234. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:44 AM

Indeed, Gonat. E4, I thought. Is it me, or has there been an inordinate number of outs in the air tonight?

  235. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:44 AM

Really only need 1 win in this series. Would be nice to get the first one.

  236. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:45 AM

Gonat. at 9:42, very good point. Have to make the Janish play.

  237. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:47 AM

Yep, you get Janish then the score remains 4-1 and in the 5th you face Hudson, Bourn, then Prado.

  238. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:47 AM

Ah, geez, the Phillies Phans In Nats Clothing are back. Well, everybody has something to contribute, if only to serve as a cautionary example.

  241. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Time for the Nats to get the bats going.

  242. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:55 AM

If Nats take the lead I think you have to get Burnett and Mattheus up.

  243. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:58 AM

    Wow, Desmond with a WALK!!!!

  244. MicheleS - Aug 21, 2012 at 1:58 AM

  246. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:01 AM

Not one pitch in the zone against Danny

  247. baseballswami - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:02 AM

Rain delays, pennant races, struggling pitchers, need maalox, need bourbon – this winning team thing is a lot more stressful than the losing team thing was.

  248. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:03 AM

    Shark week continues!

  249. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:03 AM

An Espi sac bunt would have set up a nice 1 out with men on 3rd and 2nd.

  250. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:04 AM

How bad is Suzuki when rob gets excited about a short fly to center.

  251. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:06 AM

Doom and gloom time. That was despicable. Danny swings at everything. Roger swings at nothing.

  252. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:07 AM

Davey lives and dies by the big innings. That inning was a slow death.

  253. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:07 AM

Wow. Well, the good news is we are back to the top of the order next inning.

  255. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:08 AM

Shoot the messenger in this case–blame Carpenter. Suzuki was fine, would have scored the run with second and third and 1 out, or if he'd gotten under it a smidge less it might have made the gap.

  256. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:08 AM

Gonat I agree. A lot of wasted opportunities in this one.

  257. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:08 AM

Gee whiz Espi looked like early season Espit agian. He was pitched 5 balls and swung at three of them, the walk would load the bases with0 outs. That is what he was doing early in the season.Shark then resorts to April ball too. Swing at 2 balls (would have been a 3-0 count, and doesn;t even think about swinging at one right down the middle.Come on guys this reverting to bad habits.

  258. rogieshan - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:09 AM

Davey knows Espinosa is a terrible bunter, but why leave Suzuki to hit when there are better options in Tracy, Lombo & the Shark?

  259. natscan reduxit - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:09 AM

… in spite of my usual approval of all Davey does, I have to say he blew this one. Even I knew what Danny had to do: LAY DOWN THE D***ED BUNT!… but hey, the game's not over yet.Go Nats!!

  260. Secret wasian man - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:10 AM

  299. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:58 AM

  300. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:58 AM

    just a total bummer!

  301. Fear and Ignorance - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:59 AM

21,000 for a game like this is a travesty. By the time this one is over, that will be down to about 10,000. I guess 3rd Eye Blind (circa 2012) is a bigger draw than this baseball team. Really makes me sick. There are more people watching the Brewers vs. Cubs in Milwaukee and Rockies vs. Mets in NY. This is not a baseball town. Redskins will always rule the roost around here and that is why they get all the press on the radio and in the paper. People still aren't paying attention to this team, and probably never will unless it is a Saturday night. Not talking about NI fans, I know you guys actually care.

  302. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:59 AM

I thought he had it too Gonat…must have just missed the sweet spot…Dang it

  303. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 2:59 AM

  305. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:01 AM

  306. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:01 AM

    Oh soooo close.

  307. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:01 AM

  308. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:02 AM

  309. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:02 AM

Even without the desired result, great at-bat by Werth in that situation. When I came to the plate, I thought to myself "Man, im glad it's Werth in this situation".Regardless of how this game ends, can you imagine thinking/saying that last year?!

  311. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:04 AM

  314. rogieshan - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:05 AM

Tough to ask a rookie to be the go-to right-handed bat off the bench. Team may want to consider adding a veteran pinch-hitting specialist to complement Chad Tracy for the postseason.

  317. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:07 AM

  318. NatsLady - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:07 AM

Not that Izturis would have hit better, but TyMo should have gone down and gotten AB's… It's really hard for a young hitter to come off the bench, and Davey's not going to let him play instead of LaRoche or Morse.

  319. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:09 AM

This will set up Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, and Michael Morse. Who wants to be the hero?Zim is due a Mr. Walk-Off moment in the biggest game of the year!

  352. NatsFanChris - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:29 AM

That was painfully close from ALR.Would like to see our batters be a little more patient at the plate at this point in the game. Seems like they are averaging 3 pitches per AB.

  353. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:29 AM

Is it me, or does Espinosa look unusually pale?

  354. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:31 AM

He does look pale, now that you mention it.

  355. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:32 AM

Man, we have had some very ugly at bats tonight.

  356. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:34 AM

No idea what Desi was swinging at. Where is Lombo as at least PH tonight?

  357. NatsLady - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:35 AM

Gorzy only pitched one inning, he will have to be first on tomorrow with Stras pitching.

  358. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:36 AM

    Game of inches.

  359. NatsLady - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:36 AM

OH, pooooh. I was SURE that was foul.

  360. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:36 AM

I hear Danny's changed to the fragrance-free moisturizer with aloe vera and a little sunscreen…makes him look pale

  361. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:37 AM

Should have had them in 8th, now Hayward, Jones and Freeman up

  362. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:38 AM

Two plays tonight missing ball into glove. Costly plays. And yet, we are tied.

  363. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:39 AM

    huge out!!!

  364. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:40 AM

6 innings of 0's from the pen..can't ask for more than that…Either way, some pressure on Stras to go deep tomorrow…He's never thrown an 8th inning pitch in his Nats career…

  365. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:40 AM

come on 3rd base ump… were you napping on that

  366. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:41 AM

To pitch around that leadoff double was just clutch by MGonz

  367. NatsLady - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:42 AM

That is the best I have seen MGonzo! He was really focused, I mean, MAD.

  368. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:42 AM

    Clutch clutch clutchcome on boys!!!!

  369. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:43 AM

come on 3rd base ump… were you napping on that?? The check swing or the ball that hit the line? Both were good calls.

  370. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:43 AM

    good point Swift

  371. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:44 AM

OK, Davey. Dancing with the devil for six innings… better get something here.

  372. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:44 AM

The Z… no problem with ball that hit line, my problem was Espi had the exact check swing earlier and he called it a strike

  373. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:45 AM

Sometimes Dave Johnson is a complete idiot. Tonight is one of those nights. Davey is an absolute Master in the clubhouse.Too bad that doesn't transfer to the management of a game. Tonight, Davey has been brain dead.

  374. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:45 AM

    Lombo is on

  375. NatsLady - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:45 AM

    Lombo! Can't ask for more!

  376. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:46 AM

RoY – Lombo? Could he actually get consideration ? Man, he can flat out hit.

  377. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:46 AM

    Lombo needs to play!!!

  378. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:46 AM

Sometimes I think Davey's love for power hitters betrays him. Lombo instead of Tyler Moore earlier?

  379. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:48 AM

Make no mistake about it: the Nats best run of the last 8 years happened when there was no Desmond. What did they go, 19-6? So Desi comes back — starts booting the ball, dropping other balls, going 1-14. We bench perhaps the hottest hitter we had in Lombo. Lombo pinch hits and voila: basehit. Again, Davey is a genuis in the clubhouse and can be quite the Village Idiot when running a game and making out a lineup. Didn't Davey just give Harper the night off when it was apparent to ALL that the kid finally had broken his slump? Davey is a field idiot.

  380. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:48 AM

Tonight, Davey has been brain dead. I don't agree, my comment just now notwithstanding. His bullpen management, for instance, has worked fine. It's not his fault if they swing at [stuff] they couldn't hit with a broom, on the first pitch.

  381. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:50 AM

Phillies Phan In Nats Clothing. Going out of your way to bash the team you are putatively a fan of, that's Phillies Phan stuff.

  382. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:50 AM

Oh yeah, right .. 'his bullpen management has been fine." Davey is gambling on scoring that lone run in the bottom half — he has one pitcher left. If the game goes 13 or 14, Davey has willingly given the game away. Great bullpen management.

  383. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:51 AM

    Dang IT!!!!!

  384. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:51 AM

Pulling Harper was brilliant motivation. Wait and see.DAMN!!!!!!!!11

  385. NatsFanChris - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:52 AM

    Are you kidding me!!! Ugh.

  386. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:52 AM

Oh my! Thrice robbed of HR by mere feet!?! Twice Werth, once ALR.

  387. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:52 AM

Z you are a complete idiot. You sound like a soccer fan.

  388. NatsFanChris - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:53 AM

How frustrated must Werth be? A few feet away from two different walk-off HRs

  389. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:53 AM

    I think that's against Mark's rules.

  390. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:53 AM

Was Harper talking to his bat?

  391. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:53 AM

You are against the rules. Go complain you litter twerp.

  392. baseballswami - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:54 AM

Say what you will about JZ's rough start, our offense is killing me right now.I mean, they were retired by Chad Durbin.

  393. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:54 AM

Bryce owes someone a new bat.

  394. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:54 AM

Not the soccer thing, the other. And you are two for three now–throw up on a little kid, while you're at it, get the hat trick.

  395. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:56 AM

But I'm feeding the troll again, aren't I?

  396. Fear and Ignorance - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:56 AM

Werth doesn't have HR power anymore…that is at least 5 balls he has hit to the warning track since he has been back. He is getting old.

  397. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:56 AM

Haha Z-Mantis, or he could just Boo Santa Claus…

  398. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:57 AM

very frustrating… I feel we should have won this by now. The Braves still can pitch Kimbrell and gives them the edge Either way… a great game and it would be no shame in losing

  399. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:57 AM

Uh, we just can't get it done tonight!!

  400. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:58 AM

All Werth needed was a hit in the 8th and game is over.

  401. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:59 AM

BOO Santa? Heck, they beat the old man up. Adam LaRoche!

  402. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 3:59 AM

Braves bottom of order here, we are middle of order in 12th, if Stammen can hold, we will win it in 12th

  403. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:00 AM

May have to use a starting pitcher soon, Detwiler I assume, but Thursday is an off day…

  404. mick - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:00 AM

223 hitter here, let's go Stammen

  405. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:00 AM

Mick, concur in part and dissent in part. Yes, we could have won half a dozen times. No, it would be a shame to lose.

  406. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:00 AM

I do wish they'd get Lombo more time — I know Desi hits the long ball, but IMO Espi is far superior at SS, and you don't lose anything with Lombo at 2b — and Lombo was so darn hot — I don't know. Maybe we would do better with Espi and SS and Lombo as 2b permanently.Anyone notice that Espi hits better when he plays at SS?

  407. Ratiocinational - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:00 AM

    Sideways Sno-Cone!!!

  408. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:01 AM

I know most of us are not at the park, but hey, we're over 400 in here for about the fourth time ever, I think. And mostly good stuff. So there's that. Which is nice.

  409. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:02 AM

Plenty of good seats available at the stadium now. If the game goes 20 innings, someone going on down now can watch a good game from some great seats!

  410. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:03 AM

Man, these late-night west coast games are killing me. Oh,'we're at HOME? Nevermind.

  411. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:03 AM

Wow, NL East Heavyweights going toe-to-toe for three games, and burning the bullpen at both ends in game ONE. Is this great, or what??

  412. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:03 AM

Right on Z-Mantis…Stay on the High Road, like me and Denny GreenLET'S GET SOME (one) RUNS…

  413. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:03 AM

NatsFan Since Start, what position did you say your son played on the MD Patriots?

    Morse 0-6 Ouch

  423. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:09 AM

ALR missed the last one by a few feet and deserves his walk-off here!

  424. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:09 AM

Morse just said to,ALR -'All soft'

  425. Gonat - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:11 AM

Guess right here ALR and send the Nats home happy!

  426. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:11 AM

I can hear the HP ump calling pitches now. Maybe we should have gone down there. I wonder at what point they'd just let us in?

  427. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:12 AM

I think I like the Braves bullpen better than our's. 'gulp' Portends a rough september.

  428. ehay2k - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:13 AM

Better option – send Mark Z down out of the press box for a quick interview.

  429. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:13 AM

Many fans had to leave because Metro's last train has left the station.

  430. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:14 AM

Jim, I like Kimbrel better than our guys, but that's about it…The Braves pen has thrown soft stuff and a lot of strikes tonight…Nats have been over-aggressive and gotten themselves out a lotThe Nats pen throws GAS, but has too many walksLike just about everything else with these teams, they're pretty even

  431. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:16 AM

ehay2k, I've been wondering where Mark has been? Working? That's no excuse!1I'm halfway serious. I could get there in 15 minutes.

  432. baseballswami - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:16 AM

And we thought the West Coast games were hard to deal with.

  433. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:17 AM

we can always ask Lannen to come up for one start, even if we are short one bench guy on Wednesday.

  434. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:17 AM

Haha..I was in Vegas last week, still on West Coast time anyway…Ready to go 20 if needed…

  435. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:17 AM

I read in the Post today that Johnson benched Harper that one game when he threw to the wrong base — again. Now it's time to fine the kid for breaking his bat in public afte he swings at a bad pitch.Somebody should help Harpe grow up a bit.

  436. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:18 AM

Wow, nice play for Desmond, considering it's 0018h.

  437. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:19 AM

    8 shutout innings! Wow

  438. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:19 AM

NatsFanJim, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they fined him, but I'd be surprised if they made it public.

  439. NatsLady - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:19 AM

Stammen is turning into a side-armer. Amazing. Great job.

  440. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:20 AM

    Vegas? Work or play?

  441. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:20 AM

The Braves are tough — this race is going to tighten up especially when you see how eeeezy the Braves last 40 games are.

  442. Ratiocinational - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:21 AM

I'm with you NatsLady…Stammen is looking PFB!

  443. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:23 AM

Whoa a good old fashioned seeing-eye ground ball. Desi should steal, Espi bunts — table is set.

  444. Joe Seamhead - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:23 AM

Suzuki has had a terrific game behind the plate. As he has gotten more comfortable he has shown that he is the real deal back there.Way to go, Desi! Ok, let's keep the line moving!

  445. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:24 AM

Hmm I am not happy with that — at all. That's on Johnson. Bad call, Johnson.

  446. Ratiocinational - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:24 AM

Let's win this and keep EJax fresh!

  447. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:24 AM

    Man, Espi really can't bunt

  448. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:25 AM

At least there's an off-day before EJax would have to start again..

  449. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:25 AM

Stammen is looking good. Let's give him the rest of the night off, OK? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze?

  463. Swift Eagle - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:30 AM

Stammen deserves the win, but so does all the whole bullpen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  468. NatsFanJim - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:32 AM

Stammen gets the well deserved win.We go 30 over .500.We got Lucky. Both teams could have won the game much earlier. This is a Magical Year that might not get repeated for a generation. Let's enjoy this.

  471. baseballswami - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:34 AM

  477. The Z-Mantis! - Aug 21, 2012 at 4:46 AM
