Game 129: Nats at Marlins

Aug 29, 2012, 8:30 PM EDT

US Presswire file photo
The Nationals need to win tonight at Marlins Park to avoid a six-game losing streak.

Another day, another attempt by the Nationals to end their losing streak. They've dropped five in a row now, last night's 9-0 trouncing at the hands of the Marlins easily the worst of the bunch.

No changes to Davey Johnson's lineup. He'll stick with the exact same starting eight that couldn't score a run off Ricky Nolasco last night, hoping these guys have more success against 21-year-old right-hander Jacob Turner (making his eighth career start).

Turner hails from St. Louis, as does the Nationals' starter tonight: Ross Detwiler. The 26-year-old left-hander was on the mound when this losing streak began Thursday night against the Braves, so it would perhaps be fitting if he was the guy to put and end to the streak.

As you know, I'm not in Miami. Please enjoy the conversation as always, and I'll be back at the park tomorrow night for the start of the Nats' 11-game homestand…

Let's hope the Nats can keep Turner pitching from the stretch most of the night. Singles, not fly balls. Keep runners on base, keep pressure on Miami pitching.

  2. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Come on, Ross and Nats. Win one for Brian on his birthday. :-)

  3. peric - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:54 PM

    N1a,I don't think Mark is a Nats fan … :)

  4. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:55 PM

Per Amanda, looks like there was a team meeting. Hopefully, it was just relax…Amanda Comak‏@acomakThe #nats are holding a team meeting today. Sounds like it was coaches/manager called, not called by players. No one seemed alarmed. One veteran player said he saw it as a really good thing, good to come together every now and then and get everyone on the same page.Davey is not a huge fan of team meetings but he picks his spots. Held one in Pittsburgh in May.

  5. A DC Wonk - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:56 PM

NatsLady said… Wonk–you don't think Stras felt the pressure when he saw the Nats flubbed around and didn't score in the top of the first? No, I don't. Teams are usually (more than 50% of the time) scoreless in the first inning. But, if he _was_ effected by it, well, then, he didn't "step up."

  6. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:56 PM

1A.. agree.. a Nat's win for Brian's Birthday. Plus Cookies and Cake (or mashed bananas)

  7. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Mark is neutral but maybe we can get to Brian. :-)I don't think Mark is a Nats fan … :)

  8. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:58 PM

If nothing else, maybe on home games Brian can root for the bottom of the 9th to be canceled at Nats Park so his dad gets home earlier. :-)

  9. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Maybe mashed banana cake? hmmm…I may need to rethink that one.

  10. A DC Wonk - Aug 29, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Amanda Comak‏@acomakThe #nats are holding a team meeting today. Sounds like it was coaches/manager called, not called by players. No one seemed alarmed.Great! I was just thinking that this was the perfect time to call one.And I was imagining Davey saying something along the lines of:Well, we didn't think we would coast to the playoffs, right? So, let's just get back to basics. Let's see some patience at the plate, some quality at bats. You guys are good, so all you need to do is to play within yourselves, keep the focus, and trust your teammates.

  11. peric - Aug 29, 2012 at 9:07 PM

The meeting might have been to convey the points that Rizzo during the "fracas" which Davey alluded to when he said they were "valid and taken to heart"?

  12. JaneB - Aug 29, 2012 at 9:13 PM

I am rooting for Ross to see his opportunity to pitch the dickens out of the Fish. And may the team meeting have woken up a few of our bats. GYFNG! Happy Birthday, Brian Baby!

  13. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Time to get the act together and start inning at least 5 in row.

  14. JD - Aug 29, 2012 at 9:39 PM

Manassas, How about we win 1 in a row?

  15. sm13 - Aug 29, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Yes JD, let's take it one day at a time, and the good lord willing…..

  16. rabbit34 - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Jacob Turner. Another new guy pitching against our impotent lineup. This is going to be ANOTHER one of those times when a rookie (eighth career start) pitches like Cy Young against us. We are on the road to at least 10 losses in a row. Hopefully, one of our stoppers will prevent that from happening. But, WE NEED BATS!! This is the pits.

  17. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:05 PM

Just keep grinding 'em out and maybe we can help out the ballclub. :-)sm13 said… Yes JD, let's take it one day at a time, and the good lord willing….. August 29, 2012 5:59 PM

  18. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM

I take them One at a time. I also assume I will win every one of them.

  19. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Well, at least they still have a sense of humor..James Wagner‏@JamesWagnerWPDavey on why he called meeting: "I was watching all those speeches last night on the Republican Conv. & I said maybe I outta give a speech"

  20. Secret wasian man - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM

Rabbit cmon. Lets wait until at least the 3rd to start complaining. I would however, have put in some differnt guys tonight. Lombo especially.

  21. Secret wasian man - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:21 PM

Lets go NATS. PLEEEEEEEASE don't force me to turn on the Redskins game tonight.

  22. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Maybe he oughta look up spellings before Tweetering. :-)maybe I outta give a speech

  23. natsfan1a - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:23 PM

What are these potatoes you speak of watching, SWN? Speaking of which, gotta go make dinner.

  24. Secret wasian man - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:23 PM

Would be nice if Werth (who has the WS experience) would hold a players only meeting.

  25. Secret wasian man - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Natsfan1a, very funny. I hope it was a joke and not a politically correct lecture. I prefer mashed BTW

  26. mick - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:28 PM

I got a good feeling tonight, I think Ozzie and his team are in for a long night

  27. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:29 PM

SWM.. definitley a joke (1a doesn't no pointy ball sport). I like twice baked with lots of cheese.

  28. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:42 PM

Nats have not been swept in a two series trip since 2009. GYFNG

  29. sm13 - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:45 PM

So, did Davey's speech include the word "lollygagging"? Given the lack of hustle on the bases and the pitchers' lack of focus with men on base, it might have been appropriate.

  30. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Come on batters. new night. lets kick a$$

  31. rabbit34 - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:05 PM

  35. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:16 PM

Team meeting must not have said score in the first.

  36. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:18 PM

  39. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Is Det going to Torre on that call? That is an E8

  40. JayB - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:22 PM

Yea Davey sure knows how to keep em lose and focused…..These guys need kick in Ass in the worst way. They are embarrassing to watch and telling jokes in a team meeting is not getting it done!

  41. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:23 PM

Detwiler threw 6. extra pitches based on Harps blunder.

  42. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:25 PM

So it's a positive half inning. The Fish didn't score.

  43. NatsLady - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Good on Det for not losing his cool. Kid is growing up. :)

  44. JayB - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:26 PM

that is true…he used to make faces…roll eyes and get lite up after stuff like that.

  45. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:27 PM

NatsLady, sigh of relief on Reyes liner.

  46. phil dunton - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:27 PM

Harper is hurting the team big time while Bernadina rots on the bench. Who is responsible–Davey or Rizzo? This is just as painful as watching H-Rod trying to pitch.

  47. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Who has the scouting report on this kid Turner? I know he was a top prospect for the Tigers, but that's it.

  48. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:31 PM

8 pitch inning with 2 K's. Another Cy Young candidate throwing at the vaunted Nats.

  49. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:32 PM

I figured the team meeting stressed taking pitches. that is why of 4 k in 2 innings 3 were looking.

  50. phil dunton - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:32 PM

The way the Nats are hitting, they are going to make even a marginal pitcher look like Sandy Koufax.

  51. Nattering Nat - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:32 PM

Davey to team: I'm so happy we had this little chat. Now can someone, anyone, on this team please get a HIT?

  52. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:32 PM

MicheleS, throws fastball, slider and curve and very inconsistent. That K pitch to Morse when he's hot is a hard line drive.

  53. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:34 PM

Thanks Ghost. At least Ian made contact :-)Liking the ground ball outs by Ross!

  54. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:38 PM

MicheleS, he will miss locations and that's where you have to beat him.

  55. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:38 PM

  57. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:40 PM

Manassas.. I like Diet Dr Pepper…

  58. JayB - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:42 PM

This team still needs a leader. It is not Zimm that is for sure. Werth…not a chance…Ian D is the only one close to any leadership qualities. He should get in the face of Morse and Adam and Werth and tell them stop taking fastballs right down the middle. Have some fight and get mad about getting shown up by a rookie pitcher with 5 starts and a 5+ era!Davey is missing the boat here. This team is full of wimps who want to be told it is all OK to lose.

  59. Swift Eagle - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:43 PM

Marlins should take the field next inning with just the pitcher, catcher, and first baseman, apparently that's all they need…

  60. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:44 PM

My goodness the first time through line up was Warhol. Only Desmond hit the ball like a hitter. The third inning 3 broken bats to the pitcher.

  65. MicheleS - Aug 29, 2012 at 11:48 PM

Ghost/Gonat.. At least the bullpen is up.

  137. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:56 AM

and now we have a Lombo sighting

  138. Gonat - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:57 AM

I hate to say, not a good finish to his night. Went from a gem to a so-so night because of that leadoff walk.

  139. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:57 AM

Amazing. I believe Carlos Lee can out run both LaRoche and Morse.

  140. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:58 AM

What took them so long. walking a lefty .201 average guy was enough for me. we can't afford to give this away. soon as Eskimo got the hit the switch should have happened. bad managing this time

  141. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:59 AM

MicheleS, his pitches were up in the 5th. After the leadoff walk I would have pulled him.Not happy with Davey giving them an opening.

  142. rabbit34 - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:59 AM

The rabbit is going back in his bunny hole for a few days. Hope we win. See ya Sunday. Gee, I hope we hold onto this game!

  143. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 12:59 AM

And you know Stamton has a big fly in him on his bobblehead nite.

  144. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:00 AM

    I HEART Ryan Matheus!

  145. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:00 AM

    Great job by Mattheus.

  146. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:02 AM

Ghost. I think that is all part of Davey's plan to let the Pitcher learn how to work out of jams and make adjustments. He did it with the Mets, he is doing it with the Nats. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (looking at you Stras)

  147. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:08 AM

Good call Michele. And I thought the pitch to Lee could havegotten him out of the inning. But the lead off walk with a 4 run lead was inexcusable.

  148. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:10 AM

    Sweet! Pads up 6-1

  149. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:10 AM

Padres up 6-1 bottom of the 8th.

  150. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:11 AM

    Dr. Pepper, huh, Michele.

  151. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:12 AM

    Umm.. anyone warming up yet?

  152. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:13 AM

    Or a beer.

  153. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:15 AM

Can not lose this game. This would just be devastating

  154. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:16 AM

Venters is getting hit. 8-1 Pads

  155. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:17 AM

At least if we blow this we can blame the pitching and not the bats. BTW even though braves lose we need a win

  156. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:18 AM

SWM.. we always need wins. Barves losing is just icing on the cake

  157. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:18 AM

We're on pins and needles in the 7th inning of a game on Aug 29!! Imagine how great October is going to be…Got to love this game…

  158. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:18 AM

Devastating would be a levee breach in New Orleans. This is entertainment.

  159. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:18 AM

Agree Michele. Getting more than a little nervous.

  160. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:19 AM

It's just 1 of 162 SWM….no matter what happens tonight the Nats will have to play well in Sept to make the post-season…

  161. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:20 AM

So.. is it DRUUUUU or Sean for the 8th?

  162. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:21 AM

Your right swift. I just sleep better when we win. Haha. Burnette and clip should be fresh. Let's get some runs.

  163. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:22 AM

Man, I already had this down in the winner's column.

  164. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:23 AM

I know Davey likes to play for the big inning, but I'd be a fan of some small ball here in the 8th an 9th…Another run would feel pretty good

  165. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:23 AM

MicheleS, I hear you and would heartily agree with a 5 game winning streak.

  166. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:25 AM

Hitters back to taking night off. pitchers giving 5-0 lead and gave 80% back already.

  167. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Looks like Sean for th 8th, Drew sitting down

  168. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Yes yes yes. Lets get a run here.

  169. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:26 AM

We need to get Zim in. no Tom foolery

  170. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Righ center field shot by Zim is encouraging.

  171. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:27 AM

La Roche is not delivering. First pitch swinging? Ughh

  172. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:28 AM

LaRache didn't get messageBraves lost 8-1

  173. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:30 AM

    Big knock by the Beast

  174. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:30 AM

Okay.. LaRoche advanced the runner and he did get a hit earlier in that horrible shift. And yes the Barves lost 8-2 (Manassas, they tacked on a run in the 9th)Let's lock this one up.

  175. Secret wasian man - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:30 AM

    Yeah baby. Morse the beast.

  176. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:30 AM

    Sweeeeet.. Insurance run!

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:30 AM

    Thanks beast. go Ian

  178. sm13 - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:32 AM

Nats showing a bit of fight. Maybe the pep talk is paying fividends ?

  179. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:32 AM

Carp and FP are getting loopy in the booth

  180. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:33 AM

Zim 1 out double, LaRoche (already with 2 hits) moves him to third, and Morse drives him in.Not bad for some veterans.

  181. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:34 AM

That some great Goon Squad stats for the pinch hitters.

  182. ehay2k - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:37 AM

Why is baseball so up and down?!? Why can't they just hit the same, and pitch the same, every time out? Sheesh! :-)

  183. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:38 AM

Not happy with the Onion's brother.

  184. Gonat - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:39 AM

Nats not getting the leadoff man out.

  185. ehay2k - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:39 AM

Bench is looking pretty good, at least of batting avg. RBIs, and other stats matter. I guess the Mike Cameron issue is a non-issue?

  186. Gonat - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:40 AM

    No Zim you didn't.

  187. Gonat - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:40 AM

How does Zim miss that completely. Come on. I can see knocking it down but that is a horrible effort.

  188. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:41 AM

    Is Sean Burnett a spy?

  189. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:41 AM

    bad hop?

  190. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:43 AM

Yeah, sometimes I would prefer solid over flashy at 3rd.

  191. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:43 AM

A hop yes but Zim got air. A single becomes a double.

  192. ehay2k - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:44 AM

Off night by Burnett, but defense didn't help him there.

  193. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:44 AM

You have to get leather on that.

  194. JaneB - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:44 AM

Davey's leaving US in to see how we do under adversity. Let's go NATS! See the curlie W, guy. Go get 'em Storen.

  195. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:45 AM

Yeah, Bryce needs more time in the minor leagues….

  196. MicheleS - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:45 AM

Best Throw by Harper in about a month.

  197. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:45 AM

    And now it's Stanton….Gulp

  198. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:46 AM

ehay2k, not bad by Burnett, found holes.

  199. sm13 - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:46 AM

Why are we pitching to Stanton?

  200. Swift Eagle - Aug 30, 2012 at 1:47 AM

This is a tougher situation for Drew than all those 9th inning saves he had last year…
