Beltway Baseball – 8/31/12

Aug 31, 2012, 3:00 PM EDT

Was the Nationals’ recent losing streak cause for concern or just a small bump in the road? Is Bryce Harper finally learning how to control his emotions on the field? Has Drew Storen made an important leap back to peak form just in time for the stretch run?

Chase Hughes of CSNwashington.com and Amanda Comak of the Washington Times joined me to discuss all those issues and more on our latest edition of Beltway Baseball. And as always, we answered your questions on the Nationals.

Enjoy the show!

    er, where is the show?

  2. Mark Zuckerman - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:20 PM

Is it not showing up for everyone? It's working on my computer.

  3. Eugene in Oregon - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:25 PM

natsfan1a – If you're just getting audio, click to 'full screen' and you'll also get the video (at least on my Mac). If you're not getting audio, not sure what you should do.

  4. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:29 PM

I got it fine, right after the ad.

  5. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:31 PM

    Working for me also.

  6. MicheleS - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:39 PM

    Just watched..Good Stuff! Thanks Mark!!

  7. Stew Magnuson - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Thanks for answering my question about the All-Star game. That is certainly welcome news!

  8. SonnyG10 - Aug 31, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Good program Mark. You always do a fine job.

hmmm, my computer must be blocking it, as I see only the text, with no audio (and two different browsers).

  11. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:00 PM

I had to refresh a few times and it worked. The Bryce Harper teenager discussion is interesting in all the accomplishments and being included alongside some of the greatest names in baseball history. Mantle, Ott, Griffey. Rare company.

So how cool is it that Mark's old employer was the clips sponsor?

  13. Sec.3, My Sofa - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:06 PM

    And Ed Kranepool.

  14. MicheleS - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Looks Like Furcal could be out for the rest of the year.. UCL problem. Berkman it going to get activated tomorrow.

  15. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Am using Goggle Chrome, 1a, with no problem. Good job, Mark, as usual, thanks for these.

FYI people, if you are going to the game on Sept. 16.Nationals PR ‏@NationalsPRESPN has selected the #Nationals game on 9/16 at Atlanta as the ESPN Sunday Night Game of the Week. It is now an 8:05 ET start.

Interesting video's on Mauer, whose caught-stealing percent has gone down recently (with, I assume, pretty much the same pitchers). Shows how his current technique is slowing him down a micro-second or two. Has anyone watched closely enough to see how Flo and Suzuki step and throw?What-has-happened-to-Joe-Mauer-s-defensehttp://twinsdaily.com/entry.php?1823-What-has-happened-to-Joe-Mauer-s-defense

This would be a good show to air on CSN TV in an expanded format. There really isn't a Nats discussion show on TV (MASN or anywhere) quite like it. Phil Wood on MASN does a good job but that show has a completely different feel – much less contemporary — than this one.

  19. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:26 PM

"much less contemporary" = "old school".

  20. natsfan1a - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:29 PM

and "prestigious" :-)Thanks for the info on browsers, folks. I usually have no problem seeing the videos but this one doesn't come up for me at all here. I can see an embedded video on the CSN site but can't get it to play. That's okay, I should probably be doing other stuff right now. Heh.

  21. natsfan1a - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:29 PM

Oh, wait. I thought the "old school" was for Insider. Never mind. :-)

  23. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 4:53 PM

That Phil Wood show is low budget and the production is poor. I've seen YouTube videos using cellphones as the camera with better production quality.

Ghost Of Steve M. said… That Phil Wood show is low budget and the production is poor. I've seen YouTube videos using cellphones as the camera with better production quality.Consider the source. It's MASN. Their Orioles show is not any better.

  25. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:01 PM

Ghost, just think of it as a radio call-in show, and listen for the content. That's what I do.

  26. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:20 PM

NatsLady, thats what it's like. I heard Phil has to drive 70 miles to get to the studio which is up I83 on the way to York PA.They need.a better set and someone to do graphics for them and maybe a more modern ballplayer tied to DC as his sidekick.

  27. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Last day for potential playoff teams to get new acquisitions for the Aug 31 deadline.Angelos will continue his dumpster diving. At some point you would hope their team chemistry would suffer. Their 20 year old Machado is batting .227 I would love to the Angelos crumble. The O's played a 4 gamer against the White Sox and attendance was horrific. Adam Jones sent out this Tweet after the game yesterday:"Please don't blame it on the Grand Prix. Cause if the Ravens were playin it would def be a sell out. But we're gonna #StayHungry"

  28. MicheleS - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Ghost. in about 15 years, Drew Storen will have his own show here in DC.

  29. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Camden Yards had a paid attendance yesterday of 10,141 against the White Sox but don't expect the Washington Post to mention that.I understand that the Baltimore Grand Prix took up a lot of the prime parking lots the last 2 days but that would have only affected their Wednesday and Thursday games, what about 10,995 on Monday?

  30. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:40 PM

"Some team" claimed Felix Hernandez off waivers. ;)

  31. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:44 PM

MicheleS said… Ghost. in about 15 years, Drew Storen will have his own show here in DC.15 years? That show needs help now! LOL There has to be some retired player(s) from the 2005 to 2011 teams where MASN could partner them up with Phil. Has to be better than Mike Wallace. Mark's broadcast with Chase blows that away. How great would it be for some show about Nats with good content.

  32. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Nats only had 23K. I figure(a) Not too many O's fans came down for the Beltway double-header. Not the best scheduling that.(b) Lot of VA fans are off for the last weekend before schools starts (I know my students are)(c) Some people felt obliged to watch (or be at) the RNC…Also, I found out from an O's fan that they stuck an extra fee on walk-up sales, ticking a lot of people off. That REALLY seems counterproductive, because even if everyone figured before the season that the O's would suck (and didn't buy season tickets), they're not sucking NOW. So why not encourage walk-ups???? Get people in the park (which has been refurbished) to see an exciting team.

  33. MicheleS - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:47 PM

Ghost.. how about Matt Stairs, wait, he is on NESN. Brad Wilkerson? It would be fun if it was Brian Schneider. I bet they could swing a deal with DeRosa

  34. sjm308 - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Nice show Mark and thanks! From the previous post. I think it was Mellisa who got me thinking about the postseason. 1. Definitely do not want us in the wildcard single game, although if we are there its still a great season.2. Not all that sure I want the #1 seed for the following reason. I realize there is lots of baseball to be played but I think its pretty sure that the 3rd seed is going to be from the West. If we are # 2, we can set our rotation up, make that trip out after Oct. 3rd and be ready to play with basically 3 days rest.3. If we are the number 1 seed we honestly will not know where we are playing until after the play in game and would not have any time to be at ether sight. We could gamble if the game was between Atl & St. Louis and pick one or the other but its still a hassle to honestly not know who you are playing until the day before. To me, the key is still just winning our division and not worrying about having the best record.Go Nats!!

  35. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:56 PM

sjm308, that is a good point about having the 2nd best record. Have to think on't.

  36. sjm308 - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:00 PM

Sat next to a fan yesterday with red carpet points (sec 309 which is just as good, if not better then my 308), and he has a 40 game package to the Nationals, a 13 game package to the Orioles and has been to Durham, Harrisburg, Hagerstown, Fredrick and Bowie as well this year. Yesterday he went to both games! He honestly did not even know about the red carpet rewards program and just deletes most stuff they send him on the computer. He was talking about how sad the attendance was in Baltimore and does not think it will improve even if they keep winning. Our park wasn't filled last night and they tried the damn wave over in right field but it never got to home plate where we could shut it down.I am expecting 5 – 10,000 more tonight as week-ends do draw and the Cards are a nice team.Go Nats!!

  37. sjm308 - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:01 PM

NatsLady, don't think too hard, its better to just go with your gut. (ha,ha)

  38. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:05 PM

MicheleS, good list. DeRosa would be good if he retired. He knows baseball and football and is a bright guy.DC just deserves better for their top sports team!

  39. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:07 PM

NatsLady said… "Some team" claimed Felix Hernandez off waivers. ;) Not giving much hope. My hope was there on July 28th.Seattle fans would revolt after what he has done the past month.I will say it again, he is the best pitcher in baseball ahead of even Verlander right now and anyone on the Nats squad.

  40. NatsLady - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:16 PM

sjm308–my gut says win every game and worry about the seeding later. LOL.

  41. 4571c960-cc1f-11e1-909b-000bcdcb471e - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:23 PM

I like the Phil Wood show — Phil himself calls it a radio show that is televised — but really that show should be called "Baseball Memories" since the topic of Senators from 1949 comes up as often as Michael Morse or Ryan Zimmerman. Its not bad, its just completely different from the excellent content Mark provides here. There is a definite need for a modern show that is real "Nats Talk" and addresses current Nats issues — Mark, Chase and Amanda could easily fill that role. To be honest, MASN has personnel that could also fill that role (Dan Kolko and Byron Kerr).

  42. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:30 PM

4571c960-cc1f-11e1-909b-000bcdcb471e – I still like those shows to have a "player" in the mix. Chase Hughes could do it but I don't see it happening with a player as my guess is MASN wants to pay gas money only. Maybe Nook Logan or Elijah Dukes would do it as rumor has it they are looking for full-time work. [sarcasm inserted]

  43. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:40 PM

I am gonna call Steinberg. How come everyone's opinion is posted but not a nats fan?

  44. Sec.3, My Sofa - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Steve M & Alpha-Bits, there are certainly 3 or 4 folks in here who would make a good show.

  45. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Don Mattingly is holding a closed door team meeting. Sound familiar? Copycat! ;)

August 31, 2012 12:53 PM _____________________________Haha!! So true. It reminds me of one of those high school sports shows they showed on Sunday mornings before It's Academic…That show is beyond Old School…

  47. Eugene in Oregon - Aug 31, 2012 at 7:01 PM

I don't get to watch any of the Nats shows, but if you're looking for an ex-player co-host, I can't imagine getting anyone other than Dmitri Young.

  48. Ghost Of Steve M. - Aug 31, 2012 at 7:10 PM

Eugene, if you get the Sports Package on DirecTV you get channels 600 to 699 and can watch MASN shows except for "Live" games are blacked out and you have to have the MLB Ticket to watch out of market games.

  49. Section 222 - Aug 31, 2012 at 7:37 PM

My barbershop group helped gather the patients before an appearance by Nats players and Screech at the National Rehabilitation Hospital today. Clipp, Storen, and Desi showed up, looking relaxed and happy. No media around as far as I could tell, just players giving back to the community. The first gathering was a fairy small group of children. Many had Nats jerseys on and they had put up drawings and stickers all over. Several of the drawings said "Natinals". Somehow when it's in a kids handwriting, it doesn't seem bad at all.
