NLDS Game 1: Nats at Cardinals

Oct 7, 2012, 4:50 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
The Nationals' first-ever postseason runs begins today at Busch Stadium.

ST. LOUIS — The time has come. No more pontificating. No more speculation. No more anticipation. The postseason has arrived for the Washington Nationals, and all that's left to do is take the field and play ball.

No surprises from Davey Johnson with his Game 1 lineup. It's the same one he fielded throughout the final two weeks of the pennant race. He doesn't have any surprises planned for his use of the pitching staff and said all of his relievers are capable of going back-to-back-to-back days if necessary. And he didn't feel any need to speak to his entire roster as a group in advance of this series.

"If I had a meeting," the 69-year-old skipper said, "they'd think I was panicking or something."

So there's nothing really left to say except: Enjoy the game, and please check back here for updates and analysis throughout…

Same lineup no changes … sticking with the date that brung 'em to the dance.

  2. A DC Wonk - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:00 PM

No problem boys. We played to sell-out crowds here just a week ago, with some pressure, too.Gio — show everybody why you led the league in wins! Nats, show everybody why you led (or nearly led) the league in batting post ASB. Bryce, show them why you are indeed a once-in-a-generation hitter; RZim, show them the same Mr. Clutch you showed on the opening day of Nats park; Desi and Espi and LaRoche, show them why you all can be gold glove caliber (and, Ian, show them you're the best #6 hitter in baseball); MM show them your healthy power; and Werth, show them why you became the first high-priced free agent to sign with the Nats and what made you such a good lead off batter. That oughtta cover it for the first game, no?

Watching the A's Tigers game on MLB network.(I think Detroit will likely win this series).Jim Kaat is an absolutely terrible broadcaster, btw. Not sure why they have him as an analyst on that station either…

  7. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:22 PM

I agree Cwj….both Katt and Fox's Tim McCarver shouldbe relagated to little league regional telecasts.

Kitty Kaat? They guy who slammed Stras? He's probably onset Alzheimers like Reagan was. I can't believe he wrote that letter … ridiculous.

  10. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:33 PM

NatsJack.. Sadly Fox has the NLCS this year.

  11. Jim Webster - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:34 PM

NatsJack, agree with your comment on Kaat and McCarver, but it pains me to say that about Tim, remembering him as Bob Gibson's battery mate in the 70s. But it's time for him to hang it up.

  12. Steady Eddie - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:35 PM

Let's go Gio! (clap clap clap-clap-clap!)Another game, another series to win.GYFNG!

The Nats have been great this year at focusing on winning every series – does anyone have the numbers on wins, ties, and losses for all of the Nats' regular season series? GYFNG!

  14. Jim Webster - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:38 PM

Watching Milone pitch for As today (and Norris catch yesterday) shows how trade for Gio was a win-win … and shows strength of Nat's development plan.

  15. Steady Eddie - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:38 PM

One word why the Nats relative lack of playoff experience won't matter: Davey.

  16. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Michele ……and the WS….however I do like Joe Buck but not enough to offset McCarver. If ESPN was smart enough to put Morgan out to pasture, why isn't Fox? Maybe it's because smart and Fox don't belong in the same sentence.

  21. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Just read a retweet from Jim Bowden on a sign a fan has in St. Louis. It says "Gotta Love the Outfield Fly Rule".

  22. Nicky - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Not to look ahead but anyone heard any more on Cueto?

  23. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Watching little Tommy pitch ( tear) he's all grown up and pitching in the post season. The Nats organization is awesome at scouting and player development! We will be seeing some of that young talent on the field today. I hope the guys stay within themselves and have fun playing in October!

  24. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:54 PM

Just saw the news on Matt Kemp… Labrum surgery worse than expected, may not be at full strength even when season starts next year.. YIKES! (well, good for everyone else, but still)

  25. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Nicky.. They are working on Cueto's back, no news yet, but they are hopeful he will pitch in either game 3 or 4 of the NLDS.

  26. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 5:58 PM

You have to admit that what Latos did last night was very gutsy. They are hoping Cueto will step into his start now, in essence, they would be trading spots. That was sad to watch.Cueto was in obvious pain from the start, although no one realized it.

Swami — yes on Tommy M.! Most impressive thing of how he's been dealing today is that it's on the road — where he's had his greatest problems this year — and against a very tough lineup.

  30. sm13 - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:08 PM

This feels so cool. An hour until game time for the Nats. Our guys in the playoffs. To quote a great philosopher: woooooooooo hooooooooooo!Go Go, Go Nats!

A story about Shriley Povich and long suffering local baseball fans. Povich refused to attend another opening day … not even exhibition games. That is how a true DC local would feel. Not the transient tripe clique who so often frequent this blog.'This is the greatest baseball season of my life,' said a lifelong Washingtonian, who had been a regular at Griffith Stadium and RFK. He spoke for many.

  36. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:21 PM

  37. JaneB - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:22 PM

How fun was it for you to title this post, Mark? (asked like Debby would have asked it, and I hope she's watching today, too). Fun to hear you in the pre-game presser. My abiding feeling today, apart from a tumultuous stomach, is this: I am so happy that these guys get to play the game today. BUT I AM MORE HAPPY FOR MY IMAGINARY FRIENDS. The ones who comment and the ones who don't, The ones who have been cheering since April 2005 and the ones who came more recently. Most especially the ones who remember those awful bull pen years, and who traded insights about when to go to see Spring Training and what to do there. The ones who are scattered across the country and rarely see a Curlie W on a cap except in the mirror. The ones who love them no matter what, even if you sometimes have to step away from the TV (though not NEARLY as often as in the old days). THANK YOU MARK for this gathering site and all the insights and laughs you've given us all. We are better fans because of you. This will be a fun day. And I believe in my bones we will win it, which will just make it even more fun.GYFNG!!!

  38. JaneB - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:24 PM

Waddu, may you be signing Gloria! by 6:00!

  39. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:25 PM

OY.. Bad fielding just bit the A's

  40. Another_Sam - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Ditto to you guys on McCarver — he's established a very high bar for being unlistenable. But I think Orel has a chance to move into Tim's league. Just IMHO. I'm not all that down on Kaat because he used to pitch here — and he pitched everywhere else too. At one point I think Kaat was the answer to a trivia question: who was the last active majo leaguer to play for a Washington club. Those days are long gone.

  41. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:26 PM

Coco Crisp? For all of you that wanted him, I say "Poppycock." I never wanted him.

  45. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:30 PM

It will be so awesome to be in the NLCS that I'm not even going to mind Joe and Timmy making the call. (Tim's a true joke of a color guy though.)The drinking game today should probably be any reference to Strasburg. I'll bet it happens enough to get very, very drunk. Bonus shot for a mention of the dubious Medlen comparison. Boz had a nice point in his piece today (he's on fire right now by the way), about a generation of Nats fans who grew up somewhere else as fans of other teams or grew up here, but were too young (or not even born in 1971) to know or care about the Senators. They suffered through many years of not having a team in DC and adopted this team as their own right from the start in 2005. They are enjoying this moment just as much as those of you who grew up with the Senators. Time for playoff baseball. We're ready!

  46. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Hi Charlie, Hi Dave! I've never been happier to hear your voices.

  47. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 6:35 PM

222, Nice to see Boz welcome everyone with open arms and not have a purity test. Your right he has been on fire, as have all the reporters that have been covering the team. Following them all on twitter has been a blast as well.

If you listen to Charlie and Dave on the MLB app, it's behind the TV broadcast. If you have a DVR, you can pause the TV broadcast and then sync it with the radio feed. (I use the crack of the bat or the ball hitting the glove to do it.) I'm not to that point with these announcers yet, but it's nice to have in the reserve .

  132. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:00 PM

    Suzuki getting battered.

  133. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Whew. That could have been soooooo much worse.

  134. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:01 PM

All right, we've seen this show before. Get some runs and Gio, settle down.

  135. JaneB - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Okay. That's just one run down. It could be so much worse. Now our guys will pick him up. GYFNG!

  136. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM

    We got this.GYFNG!!!

  137. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Stats clearly demonstrate Gio pitches better less rested.Davey chooses to rest him.Result? A very very very rusty and unsure Gio.Thanks, Davey.

  138. Drew - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM

The Nats are very fortunate that the Cards only scored two runs.Gio needs to find his GPS.

  139. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM

  140. Smatt1001 - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Let's hope the jitters are out. Time to grind it out Nats.

  141. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Mark Zuckerman ‏@ZuckermanCSNWell, through 2 innings, Gio Gonzalez has a no-hitter going

  142. Will - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:03 PM

The way Gio has been pitching, it's not unreasonable to panic.Lucky to limit the damage to only 2 runs. Hopefully, he's got the nerves out of the way now. But I don't want to think if he comes out wild again in the 3rd…

  143. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:03 PM

John Perrotto ‏@jperrotto#Nats LHP Gio Gonzalez has allowed two runs, walked five and thrown 55 pitches in two innings — and still has his no-hitter intact!

  144. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:03 PM

Seen this show before? When?Gio walking four in an inning — wild pitching a run home?No one has ever seen this show before.

  145. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:04 PM

    Gio is just hustling 'em.

  146. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Wainright is a master — moving the ball all around the zone.

  147. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Wainrights' curve is very on today — not good.

  148. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:07 PM

Damn the whole baseball world knows Zim's hole is up and in.first pitch? up and in

  149. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:07 PM

Wainwright doesn't have such great control either.

  150. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Morse — first pitch swinging — ooookay

  158. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:10 PM

The Nats are hitting, the cards are walking. You cannot compare Stras to this pitcher !!!! He is only 23. This again— arrrrrrg. Hope Gio has pulled himself together.

  159. Will - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:11 PM

I didn't place much credence in the whole "playoff experience" argument. But seeing how nervy some of our young guys look has me reconsidering the merits of that.

NFSS, we got your point. No need to rub it in.

  161. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 4:11 PM

  162. Exposremains - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:13 PM

  173. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:20 PM

I still don't quite get the reasoning behind the League's Best record playing a wildcard also ran in their home park.

  174. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:21 PM

Much, much better. Still inconsistent . When was the last time Gio pitched? Long layoff not so good? Curve still not there- it 's a feel pitch. But I will take it. Now some offense??

  175. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:22 PM

Hee hee. told ya. NatsNut said…Gio will come back. Just get out of this inning.October 07, 2012 3:56 PM

  176. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:23 PM

This 2 wildcard format came after the schedule was set- no travel days open. Only this year, then it changes.

  180. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:26 PM

    Danny K Espinosa

  181. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Yep — if only the stock market and the weather were as predictable as Espinosa.

  182. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:26 PM

I still don't quite get the reasoning behind the League's Best record playing a wildcard also ran in their home park. It's a one year only problem. They set all the rights for the TV games before they decided to go with two WC teams. Using an off day and a day for the WC games meant they didn't have enough off days to accomodate a regular 2-2-1 format for the NLDS. So they'd have to go with a 3-2 or a 2-3 format. 2-3 is fairer than 3-2 so there you have it. Definitely took away one of the advantages of having the top seed.

  183. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Really needed to move the runner . Even a contact out would have done that.

  184. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Espinosa can't identify anything batting left handed. Anything offspeed and he's dead meat.

  185. Drew - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Cannot wait until Rendon comes up for good. His contact and on base percentage will do wonders.

  186. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Espinosa: #3 in MaJors this year in K'sButFirst in the NL with 189Good job, little Danny.

  187. feelanau - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Until he shows he won't strikeout every other at bat davey must bunt in that situation. It's a wasted out.

  188. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:29 PM

Lombo just has to be inserted in that 2b spot. This is the playoffs — Espi will cost them, big.

  189. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Can the Nats to anywhere with two automatic outs in the lineup: Espi and the pitcher's spot?

  190. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Wainright with 7 k's in four innings.

  191. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Are the cardinals really that paranoid about sign stealing? Is that because they do it. ? Kind of kooky. Come on , Gio !!!

  192. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:31 PM

The Cards ate the Nats alive in that last series. This is the one team I did not want to see in the playoffs.

  193. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:32 PM

  197. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:36 PM

Natsjack. He might not have Damny's range or cannon, but he is a more consistent offensive player. He would have made contact at least and moved the runner. I hope Danny has a desi-like jump next year. He can be good or a liability. When he hits for power it balances the K's.

  198. rabbit34 - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:37 PM

    CRAP…CRAP…CRAP…There goes the no-hitter.

  199. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Nice turn by Danny. Good, quick inning for Gio .

  201. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:42 PM

    I agree, Swami.

  202. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:43 PM

Gio's at 83 pitches after 4 innings. Has an inning left in him for sure, but maybe not more. Unless the Nats get something going though, they won't have to PH for him until the 7th.

  203. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:43 PM

swami…Lombo is a solid utility guy who may do well on a second division club as a starter. You see everything he's going to be right now.Espinosa still has some levels he can still climb.

  204. jw - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:45 PM

and let's get the offense going

  205. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:47 PM

I like having the pitchtrack up for every pitch. Even when it shows that the pitch was, in fact, not "on the outside corner." MASN take note. It can be done.

  206. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:48 PM

Who says we're not playing small ball. Harper gets a sacrifice K!

  207. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:50 PM

Bryce has good at bats even when he makes an out. Danny should watch him. They need to put a few of these hits together.

  208. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Gio getting first pitch strikes now.

  209. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Natsjack- disagree on Lombo. Very high baseball iq, high contact rate, good fielder. What we saw was part time, rookie play. Playing every day all season he could be outstanding. I do agree that Danny has great potential. Will he fulfill it the way Desi is ?

  210. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:00 PM

The Lombo vs. Espi debate is an interesting one that we've had several times this year. I tend to agree that Espi is the more promising overall player. But I also think Lombo will develop into a better player than he is now. The discussion is irrelevant at this point though because of one thing I am certain: Davey is not going to bench Espi during this series.

  211. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:02 PM

Swami, just to clarify, I was agreeing with you in regards to missing the play due to the chatter by the TV guys.

  212. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:04 PM

Got it , Joe. That was annoying. I see the Nats being rusty from too many days off, especially Gio. Cards have momentum from Friday and are at home. This is the advantage to the number one seed?? Garcia up ???

  213. Steady Eddie - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:05 PM

That was a gimme from Emmer to Beltran, even the announcers are saying so. One thing to not give him the corner but that was entirely in the zone.

  214. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:07 PM

Well, he was getting strikes. He's losing it now.

  215. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:07 PM

    Player of the game- Suzuki.

  219. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:11 PM

For those who lost TV coverage, Gio got out of a 2 on 1 out jam be getting Holliday to K and Craig to pop up to ALR. Still 2-1 after 5. This update courtesy of DirecTV.

  220. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:11 PM

And Gio gets out of it. Davey was not going to take Gio out if there was any chance of him finishing the 5th inning. Pitcher wins may not mean much to the saber guys, but they mean something to the pitchers. Also, Davey is, believe it or not, still in "teaching mode." With luck, Gio will be in even higher leverage situations.

  221. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:11 PM

We lost the HD, switched to std, def. and had it for two pitches, then lost the video, but had audio. Just got it back on.

  222. Oldguy - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:12 PM

Gio got through five. All things considered, it was not as bad as it could have been. A couple of hits among those walks would have been killers. He has no doubt grown from this and will be ready for a 5th game if we need him.

  223. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:12 PM

  235. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:22 PM

Gio didn't pitch well, but the Nats' non-existent bats are to blame for where we are at this point. 2 runs in 5 innings against this offense is not bad. Now we just have to come back against their bullpen. Ours is better.

Why does everyone on our team swing at balls in the dirt?

  251. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Werth isn't behaving like the post season veteran at this point. They need both he and Harper to get on base to be successful. Right now Werth looks to be backing up instead of the stepping up as one playoff veteran described, referring to the two genres of playoff players. There's still time. Werth needs to do a lot better.

  252. BigCat - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:33 PM

11 k's after 6 for us. Why do we swing at so many balls out of zone? I'll bet at least 9 of the k's are curves bouncing. Davey has got to sit Espi down. He has no idea or clue where the ball is. It is almost comical.

  253. Knoxville Nat - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:34 PM

Sports Illustrated had an excellent article by Tom Verducci (I think) analyzing the MLB playoffs in which he pointed out the high number of strikeouts all across baseball this year and said that in the modern playoffs contact with the bat was a key to winning. He went on to say that the high number of K's was a weakness of the Nats and right now we are making him look like a genius. So,who did SI choose to print a picture of in the magazine to accompany the article? Danny Espinosa of course. And NatsJack, why I would agree that Espinosa has a higher ceiling than Lombo to his career, if Espi can't reduce his frequency of strikeouts over a season I see him playing somewhere else within a year or two.

  254. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:34 PM

Pressure brings out the worst tendencies of Nats Players.Werth: Not clutchEspinosa: Swings at anythingGio: Walks everybodyGood description.Still even with the pitching gaffes … the score? 2-1 against one of the most potent offenses in baseball.Right now the onus looks to be on the offense.

  255. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Lighten up on Werth there. He had two strikes, fouled off a number of pitches. A breaking ball was going to come at some point, he just didn't recognize it. It was a great pitch. Stammen seems to be on. 3 more shots to get some offense going.

  256. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:37 PM

And NatsJack, why I would agree that Espinosa has a higher ceiling than Lombo to his career, if Espi can't reduce his frequency of strikeouts over a season I see him playing somewhere else within a year or two.I don't know how the FO feels about it but I think, once again, a comparison between Ian Desmond last year, and Ian Desmond this year? Why would you think that an athlete of Espinosa's stature can't improve … perhaps far more than Desmond did? Sophomore year jinx. Give the top baby Nats some patience. Its paid dividends this season.

  257. mick - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:37 PM

Well I won't mistake Jayson for Mr October. The first time he does not deliver with the bases loaded, fine, but the second time, being a veteran player with post season experience, makes this very, very disappointing. Gio was not at his best, but he did deliver, I have no issues with Gio. I have major issues with Espi and I would expect Davey to consider going with Lombo at 2nd the rest of this series. There is no time to have Espi work out his head problems batting left handed. His at bats look like April at bats not post season at bats

  258. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:37 PM

Werth makes up for his bat with his glove … thank god!

  261. BigCat - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Yes, agree Knox. A high ceiling doesn't help us now. It seems like everytime we have a man on 3rd with less than two outs, when all we need is a groundout or flyout to score the run, Espi is up and flailing like a little leaguer. You have got to sit him down

  262. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:39 PM

I have major issues with Espi and I would expect Davey to consider going with Lombo at 2nd the rest of this series. Patience Grasshopper.

They will do the job. There is a reason they finished with the best record in baseball … they aren't slouches, not even the E man.

  266. sm13 - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Jayson Werth is no Coco Crisp, thankfully.

  267. BigCat - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:42 PM

And you can see when a guy is on the ball and the pitcher just makes a good pitch. Espi has no idea what is going on up there. He is missing pitches by 12 inches

  268. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:42 PM

Stammen is superb. Great weapon to have. Harp leading off. This is our chance against the Cards' BP.

  269. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:43 PM

I'm very impressed that with all that, the Cards still only lead by 1. We got crazy lucky today and I bet we rally here in a sec.

  270. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Stammen had a bit of an adventure. I fear we might see more of the same with Mattheus, Clippard, and Storen. None have any playoff experience either.

  271. Nicky - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:43 PM

    OkWe got this

  272. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Been on road still am Took a break barely can hear.Werth worthless with men on.What the hell was Gio doing in the second? I am so anti walk it pissed me off to read that inning. What was his problem?

  273. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Were those actual strikes that Sta(y)men was throwing? I hardly recognized them. Funny how the other guys were so wild but Craig hit a guy.

  274. Exposremains - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:46 PM

delcaso the defensive play of the game..Really? Werth's catch is not a game saving play?? TBS guy sounds like a Cards homer.

  275. Knoxville Nat - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:47 PM

Peric, I didn't say that Espi can't improve, what I'm saying is if he doesn't improve (reduce) the strikeouts and if he doesn't do a better job of putting the ball in play I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a differenet uni in a couple of years. I'm hoping he makes a Desmond like improvement, believe me I am.

  276. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:49 PM

Who is next? Can he throw strikes ?

  277. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Really? Bad hops now ? Stammen throws strikes after Gio was all over the place and it backfires. Who angered the baseball gods?

  278. JaneB - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Our bats can be hot, but when they aren't, yikes. Stammen didn't help us this inning, but we are losing because we can't get anyone across the plate, even when we have three on. I wish there was some way to help them.

  279. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:56 PM

    Yips.

  280. mick - Oct 7, 2012 at 9:57 PM

  298. Snivius - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Espinosa- head case. Deer in the headlights in playoffs. Of the no-playoff-experience guys, he's the only position player I seriously worried about (I also think Clippard is vulnerable), and so far, my fears are being realized.

  299. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Again, we need good, clutch, situational hitting. Bases loaded? Man on third with no outs ? Fold.

C'mon Tyler. See ball, hit ball.

  301. rogieshan - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:17 PM

Espinosa clearly bunted on his own, dumb play given we're down to our last six outs and a sac fly ties the game. Thank goodness for Tyler Moore!

    Love that kid!

  307. rogieshan - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:19 PM

What an ugly offensive game from Werth & Espinosa. Maybe Davey will consider inserting Lombardozzi at 2nd base and batting leadoff tomorrow.

  308. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:19 PM

So, Danny did ok, right? Saved at least one run with great double-play and the sac bunt meant the lead run scored.

  309. JaneB - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:19 PM

Espi did the right thing. Better to lay down a bunt and maybe advance the runner(s). ANd as it happened, that is what made Tyler's hit a 2RBI hit. You're just looking to be mad at Danny, me thinks.

  310. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:19 PM

Let a rookie show everyone how it's done! Six huge outs to get now.

  311. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Speaking of Espinosa … Jayson Werth yet another strike out. Looks just as bad if not worse than Espy at this point. Espy is at least in his sophomore year … what's up with Jayson? He has to know that this kind of lead against the Cardinals offense is tenuous at best?

  312. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:20 PM

    Moore: That wasn't so hard.

  313. The Fox - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:20 PM

D'Gourds, I don't think Morse could have made it, given where that ball fell. But it's all good. Now we have to hang on for two innings more. 6 outs.

  316. rogieshan - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:21 PM

NatsLady: "So, Danny did ok, right?"Only if the manager had called for a bunt, which I seriously doubt.

  317. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:21 PM

Danny did okay — Moore is the Man. How hard is that to do?Uh Oh — it's Clip. There goes the lead.

  319. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:22 PM

  320. Joe Seamhead - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:23 PM

YOWSA! Way to go, Tyler Moore.Jayson has had better days at the plate.Clip coming in.As to Espinosa's bunt, I have no idea whose idea it was, but it moved Desi to 2nd. He ended up being the go ahead run on Tyler's single.Only happened because of the bunt.Oh crap, Ryan!

  326. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:23 PM

Danny played excellent defense tonight. Two tough double plays turned. But no, that sac bunt was not "doing ok." Nor were his earlier Ks. Davey played the percentages by burning Tracy, even when the alternative was the rookie. Now he goes with Clip, even though Mattheus only made 3 pitches. But he's going with what got him 98 wins. Can Clip hold this runner?

  327. MicheleS - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:24 PM

COME ON CLIPP! YOU CAN DO IT!

  328. D'Gourds - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:24 PM

  330. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM

He can't go with Mattheus, he pinch hit for Mattheus. Personally, I think Danny was bunting for a hit.

  331. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM

  333. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:26 PM

  334. NatsNut - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:26 PM

D'Gourds, that throw wasn't the yips. Zim does that all the time.

  335. terpman33 - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:27 PM

  340. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:27 PM

Maybe his shoulder is much worse than we know. He'll be moving to first base and Anthony Rendon to third. He won't need the arm so much … just his cat like reflexes. Not sure the FO or Davey can resist having the best fielding infield in major league baseball combined with some pretty good offense …

  368. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:36 PM

Sect 222: i agree that Clip's 4-seamer no longer rises — no more hop. No one mentions that his fastball is down a mile or two either. And yes, the inconsistent home plate ump helped us out there — finally.

  380. NatsLady - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:42 PM

Article I read says it was both. Also says he injured it on August 28, which explains why he couldn't do much in September.Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp had arthroscopic surgery on Friday to repair his rotator cuff and shoulder in his left arm.Dr. Neal ElAttrache repaired a torn labrum and did a minor debridement of the rotator cuff at Kerlan-Jobe Clinic.Kemp will begin physical therapy in the next 7-to-10 days and will be unable to swing a bat for the next three months, but should be ready for the start of next season when the Dodgers open their campaign against San Francisco on April 1.He injured his shoulder on Aug. 28 when he ran, full-speed, into the center- field wall at Coors Field in a loss to the Colorado Rockies. The two-time All- Star missed the next two games, but played down the stretch even though he struggled and didn't have a hit in a season-ending series against San Francisco.Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/10/05/3036803/kemp-has-shoulder-surgery.html#storylink=cpy

  402. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Who gives a #$#$ about Kemp!!!???Same dude who predicted that Strasburg would pitch in the playoffs. How's that prediction doing? B-word.

  403. baseballswami - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Yes!!!!! I cannot believe we pulled that one off!!! Mattheus and Moore! How is that for experience?!

  404. Nicky - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Wow. Have not read the game thread. Took busy chewing my nails to hold the tablet!! Nice way for Gio to gut it out, not having his best stuff. Home field advantage is now ours!!

  409. peric - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Kind of a typical game from earlier in the regular season. Remember? No offense, good defense, stellar pitching. Felt very familiar.

  410. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Shades of April and May — 'cause that's how we won that one. Pitching and a timely hit or two. Phew!!!

  411. NatsFanSinceStart - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:53 PM

Great minds think alike? Didn't you know that about you, Peric. (chuckling)

I feel almost too much of a nervous wreck to be happy. But not quite …. woooooo hoooooo. Matheus! Moore! Storen! We love you!

  413. Section 222 - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:57 PM

Fantastic ending. Drew took full advantage of the strike zone, and his slider was hot. NL, absolutely right about Mattheus not being available for the 8th. Thank goodness Davey pinch hit for him, eh? Stockton seemed almost disappointed that the Nats prevailed. Hee hee. All these announcers worshipping last year's winner, and the year before's and the year before's are going to learn what the Nats are all about.

  414. Knoxville Nat - Oct 7, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Was that "Fifty Shades of April….."?

  415. Anna Peregrina - Oct 7, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Anyone know if the O's-Yanks game is likely to happen tonight? (Yes, I hate Angelos, but not the O's …)

  416. Bigfish - Oct 7, 2012 at 11:05 PM

I'm with D'Gourds on the Zim throwing problem: it's not his shoulder, it's what's between his ears. Does anyone remember Chuck Knoblauch? Or Steve Sax? Or Mackey Sasser? The yips don't just happen to 2nd basemen & catchers.

A great TEAM win. Virtually everybody who played today contributed in different ways, even Chad Tracy, just by being announced to pinch hit, forcing Matheny's hand.Davey says that he called for Espy's bunt because he had 3 strikeouts. It was not a squeeze because of Morse's lack of speed being at third.

Uh oh ,just realized we have to do this again and again. My blood pressure will need a vacation.
