NLDS Game 2: Nats at Cardinals

Oct 8, 2012, 5:52 PM EDT

Jordan Zimmermann faces Jaime Garcia in Game 2 today at Busch Stadium.

ST. LOUIS — How important was it for the Nationals to win Game 1 of this best-of-five series, especially on the road? "That game's huge," Adam LaRoche said this morning. "Game 1 in a short series like this is huge. I think more than anything because now for the Cardinals, since we won Game 1, this is kind of a must-win. You don't want to get down two games in any series, but definitely not in a five-game."

So the pressure today at Busch Stadium is squarely on the defending World Series champs, not the first-time playoff participants. Which means the pressure is on Game 2 starter Jamie Garcia to get his team back on track. The left-hander had an up-and-down season but he finished strong, going 4-1 with a 2.50 ERA over his last six starts (after the Nats got him for six runs in late-August).

Jordan Zimmermann makes his first career postseason start, and if you think the right-hander is fazed at all by the situation, you don't know him very well. "I really never get nervous for any games," he said yesterday. "The only game I really got nervous for was my debut [in 2009]. And I don't see anything changing this time."

We've got another afternoon start here in St. Louis, so look for the Shadow Monster to be a factor again. And for everyone who keeps asking: No, MLB has not yet announced a start time for Game 3 on Wednesday. As soon as they do, I will pass it along. I promise.

In the meantime, plenty of updates from today's game to come right here…

Come on dont tease like that. That was suppose to 5 dinger inning

  2. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:38 PM

Nats still have 12 outs to play with. I believe I'll watch a little while longer.

  3. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:39 PM

I hope JZ gets chance to redeem himself in the next series, I bet he does, I just hope he gets the chance too.

  4. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:39 PM

There is almost no momentum factor in baseball, but hey, if that makes you feel better, we still might win even without momentum.

  5. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 6:40 PM

If Nats can make the Cards sweat, even if they lose something like 7-5 or 8-6, that would be very positive

  6. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Davey needs to own up on Espi, if he is hurt, play Lombo. This bunting with Espi is ridiculous. He really should go with Lombo back in DC.Ah, why is it that you do not see the grasshopper at your feet?Davey and Rizzo are both looking at this the same way. Its a learning experience for the 2nd youngest roster … one of the most talented but lacking a great deal of experience. Two words grasshopper: learning experience. These Nats will be back … and back … and then back again. Kind of like the Everready bunny they'll keep on going. Many in baseball are in awe at what this team could become. And yes, they are going to be a whole heck of a lot better than the Spankees very, very soon.

  7. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:43 PM

A very loose game all around on defense. People will say it has to do with the play-offs, but not all games are gems. I wish I had more confidence in some of the pitchers right now but maybe most staffs are running on fumes…. Orioles' closer got hammered last night.

  8. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:43 PM

I believe Davey may have to consider using those three lefties he has squirreled away in the bullpen.

  9. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:43 PM

Momentum there just score 5 more next inning.Nut Garcia just did the thing that I hate most a lead off walk.

  10. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:43 PM

Peric…I know Espi can be a great player… I am talking in terms of THIS series and trying to give the team the best shot of winning, Espi is slumping and why not go with a more consistent and proven bat in Lombo?

  11. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:44 PM

That is fine, but unfortunately, according to the Wash Post and SI, the best team in baseball rarely wins in the post-season.

  12. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:46 PM

Boy one thing, probably a combination of umps, playoffs, and nibbling but they have got to do something about all the walks! Its something McCatty preached over-and-over again this season … and the Nats preached system-wide. NO walks. They have always killed Nats pitching in the past.

  13. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:46 PM

Zim's was a solo because Harper K instead of getting a hit.Garcia plans on giving runs back I am afraid

  14. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:46 PM

William O. Douglas Loeffler said…That is fine, but unfortunately, according to the Wash Post and SI, the best team in baseball rarely wins in the post-season.I agree and this why I will be very happy if Nats can get to NLCS and go deep before losing to Reds. Losing to Cards would be a disappointing. Reds are the best team and it will probably be a Reds-Yankees WS

  15. Section 222 - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:47 PM

I'm with NJ. Let's stick with this game a little longer. A few more good innings from our bullpen and some timely hits, and we've got ourselves a ball game. mick is also right that making them sweat a bit would be a good thing, even if we don't come all the way back. Job 1 is Garcia figuring his release point out.

  16. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:48 PM

    Nice DP

  17. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Nat Jack may be on to something…. 12 more outs assuming we keep it a 4 run game could make this interesting…

  18. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:50 PM

THIS series and trying to give the team the best shot of winning, Espi is slumping and why not go with a more consistent and proven bat in Lombo? And what kind of experience would you very, very young and athletic starter take from that? Its a learning experience. Its not like Espy is an early to mid 30's journeyman 2nd bagger like Adam Kennedy or Cristian Guzman. This is a different deal entirely. He has to learn to get through this.

  19. sm13 - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Get down on Espi if you want, but he turns a heck of a double play. Nice poise shown by Garcia to get out of the jam.

  20. pdowdy83 - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Might not have been pretty but Garcia has stopped the bleeding it seems. Time for Danny to do something positive with the bat leading off the inning.

  21. rogieshan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Peric, the wisdom of grasshopper is about living for today. When you're in the playoffs you're there to win. You're gonna learn whether you lose or not.

  22. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:52 PM

Also, as Mark said on 980 today, this is a MUST game for Cards… If reds were 1-1 with Giants or if the Giants were at least competitive, I think we would all feel a little better, I know I would. I admit, i am looking ahead and i was hoping we could win in 3 or 4 games and Reds-Giants would go 5 games.

  23. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:52 PM

And you can help. Cheer louder for Danny Espinosa than ever before and ever more than anyone else … see how that works out …

  24. sm13 - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:53 PM

Ah, but the wisdom of Rizzo is to look at the long term….

  25. pdowdy83 - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:54 PM

    Damn it man…

  26. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:54 PM

Espi finally hits one. Now time for dingers

  27. sm13 - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:55 PM

Wow, Jay makes Werth's catch yesterday look routine.

  28. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:55 PM

When you're in the playoffs you're there to win. You're gonna learn whether you lose or not.Its still a best-of-five series … patience grasshopper. The wrong experience, win or lose, can affect a prospect.

  29. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:55 PM

Suzuki didnt get memo long flies only noe

  30. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:57 PM

What a wasted inning. We nred runs

  31. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Keep it at 4 runes going into the top of 7th, we have top of the order up… that could be an interesting inning… one in which Bryce finally gets his first hit

  32. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Kelly was very hittable but we couldnt take advantage.score 5 next iinning. Moheca pitchrs next

  33. rogieshan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Sorry, Dick Stockton. It was a spectacular catch, but not "the play of the series so far." Not when the Cards are leading by four runs. Werth's catch yesterday in the sun was more clutch. Mattheus inducing two consecutive groundballs and the Nats turning a key DP were bigger plays. Quit with the love fest for everything St. Louis. And, by the way, Yadier Molina is good, but he's not God of Thunder like you guys are making him out to be.

  34. 995c0828-8d78-11e1-b794-000bcdcb5194 - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:02 PM

Peric makes me want to root for the cardinals…what an idiot

  35. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:02 PM

OK. Garcia got through with 0 runs and now it's Gonzalez. But with 9 outs left, I'd sure like a couple more runs in the 7th.

  36. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:02 PM

John Jay is impressive for guy 266 years old… oops wrong John Jay, lol

  37. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:04 PM

rogieshan agreed with you, wish Bobby C and FP were calling the games

  38. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:05 PM

    dammit Gonzo!!!!

  39. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:05 PM

Well Nats lefty relievers probably aren't going to work against the Cardinals.

  40. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:05 PM

Morse's non catch allows 8th run to score. well get 5 in the 7th.

  41. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:06 PM

If Stammen and Gonzo did not give up two very bad pitches we are talking about a 6-3 game

  42. Joe Seamhead - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:06 PM

I don't get what Morse was watching that first foul ball for. THAT was catchable, then Beltran comes back and crushes one.

  43. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:07 PM

Well Mike Gonzalez let me down. Now I want 3 runs in the 7th.

  44. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:07 PM

Peric makes me want to root for the cardinals…what an idiotDamned wood maggot why don't you get a real handle or are you too stupid to understand how to do that moron?

  45. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:08 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan said…Morse's non catch allows 8th run to score. that is true, but I expect better from Gonzales as a veteran pitcher with post season experience.. All Stammen and Gonzo had to do was keep it at 6 runs

  46. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:09 PM

I don't get what Morse was watching that first foul ball for. THAT was catchable, then Beltran comes back and crushes one.The shadows are going to be as bad for Morse as for Werth … and Werth is the better fielder hands down.

  47. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:09 PM

Gonzo got the pop up Morse is the one that let you down.5 runs this inning. Show you want it as much as they do.

  48. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:09 PM

Nats Jack, even 2 runs would be fine, make it 8-5, get 1-2 runs in 8th which makes it a pressure situation for Cards in 9th

  49. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:11 PM

First of 8 hits yhis inning

  50. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:11 PM

That's a start … and the right kind … now for Harper.

  51. pdowdy83 - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:11 PM

    Here we go

  52. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:12 PM

    Second of 8 hits

  53. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Okay the surge is started … Werth and Harper … now for the Z-man.

  54. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Now gang, win or lose, we needed Bryce to get that first hit…. that was excellent

  55. JaneB - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:12 PM

    THERE'S that run-till-they-tag-ya offense!

  56. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:13 PM

I think everyone agrees that Morse in LF is a defensive liability. A faster player gets to the ball. If this were a 1 run game, would he have tried harder? While he very well may have done so, in the games I've seen, he has really gone all-out for a ball. That has always been my question about him – does he get it?NICE! – thanks Werth and Harper for making this interesting again!

  57. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Oh c'mon dudes Florida and Miami are the same team … sheesh. Uh oh Harper blew it with his base running … learning experience.

  58. JaneB - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:14 PM

At least we got one there.

  59. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Very Selfish play by Bryce, I hope Davey lets him know, very very selfish

  60. JaneB - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:15 PM

    We can still win!

  61. pdowdy83 - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Ouch…that unraveled quickly.Sadly Holiday gets an assist on whatever the heck that was.

  62. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Officially a stupid 19 yo mistake by Bryce.

  63. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:16 PM

If harper had left immidiately he would be safe. what a dumb play. of course zim easted his homer with 0 on with 2 on a liner to left. Timing is everything.get 5 next inning

  64. rogieshan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

There you go, Peric. THAT was a learning experience.

  65. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

wait – it didn't mean interesting in THAT way!dang rookies! ;-)Although if he had made it, and it was pretty close, the Cards would have been worried. I for one am very glad to see that our boys have not stopped competing.

  66. sm13 - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Brenley giving Bryce grief for getting tagged out at third. How could he not run on the spiked throw by Holiday? Its just Bryce being Bryce.

  67. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

frustrating game, Beltram catches foul ball, Morse does not, Bryce's play really has irked me and I hope he gets chewed out for it, what part of 3 losses and your season is over does he not get???

  68. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Very Selfish play by Bryce,Agressive mistake. Not sure he'll get chided that much for that … they'll ask him if he still thinks he can make it next time that happens and go from there …

  69. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:18 PM

Had Harper right awsy esily safe but waitef way to late.

  70. JaneB - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:18 PM

Bryce mad the kind of play we've been thrilled by all season, just .025 seconds slower than we wish.

  71. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:19 PM

the Cards would have been worried.Believe me even with this ending as a win the Cards ARE worried. They yanked their starter after 2 and Jaime Garcia is one of the very best young left-handed starters in all of baseball.

  72. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:19 PM

no peric… there is a difference in being aggressive and being smart and that was not the situation to be aggressive. Bryce has the speed from 2b to score on a hit, we did not need him trying to go to 3rd in that situation

  73. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:21 PM

no peric… there is a difference in being aggressive and being smart and that was not the situation to be aggressive. We'll have to see what Davey says in the post-gamer. He usually won't mince words if he agrees with you.

  74. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:22 PM

at least we are making the Cards sweat and that is a very good thing. If Nats had not scored again after it was 7-1, I would have been worried, now I really do not think one can say Cards have momentum

  75. rogieshan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:22 PM

ehay2k, "I for one am very glad to see that our boys have not stopped competing."Second that sentiment. They could have easily folded the tent early.

  76. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Zimm's throws, they just look so uncomfortable. I feel uncomfortable watching them. Am I wrong in my recollection that he had been throwing a lot from his normal sidearm slot all year, but very recently he went back almost exclusively to the over-the-top throw he worked on after his surgery two (was it two?) years ago?

  77. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Now score at least 4 no goofing this time

  78. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:26 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan said…Now score at least 4 no goofing this timeI could see Nats getting this thing to 8-6 or 8-7 and that would be a good spring board for Wed. Even if the score stays at 8-4, Cards had to sweat it out

  79. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:27 PM

In baseball, momentum is the next games starting pitcher.

  80. pdowdy83 - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Keep on fighting guys. Only a grand slam away.

  81. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:35 PM

Where's Natslady she would be having a field day with Morse's base running … there ya go Mick an almost passive base running error versus Harper aggressiveness. Maybe its me but I'll take Harper's mistakes.

  82. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:36 PM

The Cards really seem to be pressing – Jay and Beltran in a near-BNB situation in the outfield, Beltran's terrible throw to try to get Morse at second.

  83. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:38 PM

peric, I don't think Morse could have tagged up and made it to third before Beltran gunned him down.

  84. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:38 PM

Nats are lucky they had T Moore pinch hit yesterday … over the past month Tracy swings at the first pitch and pops up, which is what I am sure would have happen yesterday…. he is veteran player and that was not a good at bat

  85. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:39 PM

The Cards really seem to be pressing – Jay and Beltran in a near-BNB situation in the outfield, Beltran's terrible throw to try to get Morse at second.I hate to break it to you … and especially the gloom and doom contingent, but the Nats are actually A REALLY GOOD team. And they are going to get even better right as we watch during these playoffs. Off we go into the wild blue ceiling up we go into the sky.Of course the Cardinals are afraid. They should be.

  86. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:40 PM

very frustrating inning now its on to DC and its up to Ejac… we can not get down 2-1 in this series

  87. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:41 PM

peric, I don't think Morse could have tagged up and made it to third before Beltran gunned him down.I think if Beltran had thrown to 2nd instead of 3rd he would have had Morse. He confused him with Dessie, Espy, Werth and Harper … lol

  88. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:42 PM

4 In the 9th not easy but since we have left runners all over the place we must score it at the end.Morse kept ball in front and still let guy go the second. When their left fielder screws up we het thrown out at third

  89. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:43 PM

Nats bats: 8 men LOB, 1 for 7 RISP. Dang HRs at the wrong time.

  90. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:44 PM

We have had 9 batters in the 9 holr. Only one with a hit Zimmermann.

  91. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:48 PM

Our pitchers in general was awful today. Now 5 runs needed. Yanks scored 5 in the 9th last night. Lets do the same

  92. JaneB - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:49 PM

Either the pitch track is off or the umpire is blind.

  93. sm13 - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:50 PM

Sean is still not the same. I wonder if his elbow will be "hurting" and we'll replace him with Zach Duke.

  94. rogieshan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:51 PM

If they come back and tie it in the 9th, I will run naked down Pennsylvania.

  95. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:53 PM

Sean was it asking much to keep this a 4 run game???

  96. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Sean is still not the same. I wonder if his elbow will be "hurting" and we'll replace him with Zach Duke.He hasn't been right for a while … and more like he was last season of late. I suspect, as you surmise, that we'll find out he has some arm issue this offseason.

  97. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:54 PM

I think Burnett's shut down for 2012 should be now, hopefully he can bounce back in the Spring

  98. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:55 PM

Burnett and Morse might have quit nut not meNeed 8 in the 9th

  99. ehay2k - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:56 PM

Wow – we started playing ugly all of a sudden. Morse looked to be loafing. Maybe his struggles are getting to him.

  100. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:56 PM

Ptiching bad to worse … and the Beast definitely in Klutz mode. Not good.

  101. Joe Seamhead - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:57 PM

    Ugly.

  102. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:57 PM

I think Burnett's shut down for 2012 should be now, hopefully he can bounce back in the SpringI think he's a free agent … I doubt he'll be back … but you never know.

  103. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:57 PM

well as far as what is aid about the Cards not having momentum… thank the bull pen for giving it back to them…. this is a really bad game and it is up to Davey to calm the ship.

  104. peric - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:59 PM

And no Nats fans Lannan is not a good replacement for Burnett … but Zach Duke? Perhaps!

  105. mick - Oct 8, 2012 at 11:59 PM

peric… i did not know that about Burnett… my preference would be to see him depart. I am hearing the Nats want a lefty closer any way in the off season and it is clear, it ain't Sean

  106. Joe Seamhead - Oct 9, 2012 at 12:00 AM

Post of the day:rogieshan said…If they come back and tie it in the 9th, I will run naked down Pennsylvania.October 08, 2012 7:51 PM

  107. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 9, 2012 at 12:01 AM

So the Nats return home and have the task of winning a 3 game seies, something they've done all season.

  108. mick - Oct 9, 2012 at 12:01 AM

what really stinks about this is that all the Starssburg junk will start up, especially if Nats lose at home on Wed.

  109. peric - Oct 9, 2012 at 12:01 AM

peric… i did not know that about Burnett… my preference would be to see him depart. I am hearing the Nats want a lefty closer any way in the off season and it is clear, it ain't Sean.If he asks for too much they will let him go … if they know he is injured but the injury isn't permanently debilitating they'll work with him. Its not like they are dripping with left-handed bullpen help. That end of the farm system cupboard is pretty sparse right now.

  110. DJB - Oct 9, 2012 at 12:14 AM

O.K., I think we must admit that the Cards have a more potent lineup, and will probably take this series. The question is: do we stand pat and wait for our youngsters to grow up or do we trade and/or acquire the pieces to compete with the Cards? I think you must trade for players with playoff experience and ability to mix with the youngsters. You generally cannot "develop" playoff success alone.

@DJB — I'm missing something. Won't our roster have playoff experience when this series is over, no matter what the outcome?
