NLDS Game 5: Cardinals at Nats

Oct 12, 2012, 9:40 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
It all comes down to Game 5 tonight at Nationals Park.

And so it has come to this: A winner-take all, decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series, the Nationals and Cardinals hoping to emerge victorious tonight and advance to face the awaiting Giants in the National League Championship Series beginning Sunday night (either in D.C. or San Francisco).

As was the case for Game 4, Davey Johnson will have an extra arm available in his bullpen: Edwin Jackson. Unlike Game 4, though, Johnson wouldn't use Jackson in a setup role like he did with Jordan Zimmermann. Sounds like the only way Jackson would appear in this game is if it goes extra innings.

Before it ever gets to that point, of course, Gio Gonzalez and Adam Wainwright will take center stage, a rematch of starters from Game 1 in St. Louis and an Aug. 31 encounter here at Nationals Park (a 10-0 blowout win for the Nats). We should have a sense early how both pitchers are going to be, and with the late starting time, there won't be any talk of sun or shadows for this game.

It will, however, be much colder than it's been for any game all season. If you're one of the lucky ones holding tickets, make sure to bundle up. You'll need to with a steady wind blowing in from left field.

Enjoy this game, everyone. You never know when you're going to get to experience another one like it. Plenty of updates and analysis here, as always, throughout…

  13. JayB - Oct 13, 2012 at 2:58 AM

yea…that was worth waiting for….his prior 25 AB and play at 2nd base….sure a walk is worth that cost

  14. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 13, 2012 at 2:59 AM

And now we get to see Edwin Jackson in a relief appearance.

  15. JayB - Oct 13, 2012 at 2:59 AM

  20. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:03 AM

I think we can all agree that Gio was probably left in the game too long?? Can't let the cards offense get their door in the door. They are relentless. Is Ejax really coming in?

  21. Section 3, My Playoffs Sofa - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:05 AM

9 outs. Shut up and cheer.

  22. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:05 AM

  26. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:07 AM

  27. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:08 AM

Damn you jackson 0-2 need a k like they get

  33. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:10 AM

This is unreal. Leadoff walk. Why EJax with Gorzo, MGonzo, Clip and Storen, Garcia and Mattheus. Davey is making room for EJax when he didn't need to.

  34. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:10 AM

… I believe Kurt wears chain mail under his uni.

  35. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:10 AM

Nats need to score again because the Cards are coming back.

  36. Smatt1001 - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:11 AM

Expos I think you're right we need some more runs.

  37. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:13 AM

Have we had any first pitch strikes? Molina can tie up right here. This is like the Braves game all over again. I want to die.

  38. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:14 AM

Anyone else feel that Davey hasn't managed his best game tonight?

  39. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:14 AM

I have called for runs since the 4th.Jackson is really pissing me off.

  40. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:16 AM

gotta to score here, no choice

  41. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:16 AM

… if I have to endure this kind of thing all the way through October, I might have to take up another sport.Go Nats!! … and Jax K's him!!

  42. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:16 AM

Was that a pitch around to Molina? I hope EJax can find a way to get Freese out. We are all trying to stay positive here.OOPS, THERE IT IS!!!

  43. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:17 AM

Seriously, what was the purpose of pitching EJax? I thought he was the long guy if needed.

  44. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:17 AM

Clippard and Storen? Let's just say that EJax not exactly looking like JZ did last night. I don't see him being a Natcnext year.

  45. Nicky - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:18 AM

    Ok 6 to go

  46. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:18 AM

  47. Theophilus T. S. - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:18 AM

Has a player ever been DFA'd in the post season? Johnson relying on Jackson: utterly feckless.

  48. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:19 AM

Twice tonight lead off walks have scored. Does McCatty preached that as much as me? My biggest pet peave for sure. Seems we do way too many lrad off walks.Hitters need to get off their rumps and get these runs back. when Cards got big leads they kept scoring. Why we quit adding on?

  49. NatsJack in Florida - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:20 AM

OK… 6 outs to go… Just one friggin add on would really be great. GYFNG!!!!!

  50. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:20 AM

"Anyone else feel that Davey hasn't managed his best game tonight?"… not to start another debate right now, but it's not easy to play small ball and score a few extra runs late in the game, when your head and heart tells you long ball is the only way…. I don't want Davey to change his ways, but I want the team to be able to play whatever kind of game is needed in any situation.

  51. djinFl. - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:20 AM

In the mean time the Giants stand in a hotel lobby in Cindy waiting to fly somewhere. Let's make stand around until the final out before flying to DC.

  52. rogieshan - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:21 AM

Davey stays stubborn with his regular hitters, but he's messing around with the bullpen. I'm just praying they can hang on for six more outs.

  53. Faraz Shaikh - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:21 AM

Why is Garcia not being used?

  54. Section 3, My Playoffs Sofa - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:21 AM

Clippard and Storen with a 2 run lead. Get on board, people!

  55. Section 3, My Playoffs Sofa - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:24 AM

  56. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:24 AM

  63. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:29 AM

Wainwright struggled. After that their pitchers just don 't make mistakes. Ours have made plenty.

  64. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:30 AM

… up here on Canuckland TV, Gregg Zaun says EJax threw only three strikes in total; the Cards were way overanxious and it cost them.Go Nats!!

  65. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 13, 2012 at 3:31 AM

Gio had 4 walks and Yadier bailed him out in a 2-0 count. Davey will get it done but this should've been a laugher.

  155. realdealnats - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:10 AM

  169. Faraz Shaikh - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:18 AM

    OMG this is stupid.

  170. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:18 AM

6 – 0 and we thought we had it in the bag. And so did the guys on the field too I guess.

  171. rogieshan - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:19 AM

Storen meltdown. Not the homeplate umpire's fault.

  172. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:19 AM

My heart is breaking for Drew. He did not get a few key calls. It's been a great season guys. We will get over this and rise from the ashes.

  173. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:20 AM

beaten by the 7 and 8 hole hitter. what a bunch of chokers

  174. Smatt1001 - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:20 AM

I think I'm going to be sick

  175. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:20 AM

… on the other hand, I watched this team come back a whole bunch of times this year. I believe it can happen again. I believe. I do … really .. I do.

  176. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:20 AM

    blue monday all over again

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:21 AM

The ckeck swing strike out not called killed storen then he killed himself.

  178. Sj - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:22 AM

    I don't know what to say…………..

  179. Smatt1001 - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:22 AM

Let's get some last minute Nats bats magic…

  180. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:22 AM

Even if we had advanced, who is going to pitch? Gio? We had a six run lead, offense scored seven. Pitching ran out if steam in the post season. Cards are a juggernaut.

  181. Nats Fan in Brazil - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:22 AM

Drew had Two strikes in almost everyone, he just couldnt put then away

  182. rogieshan - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:23 AM

Why did Werth have to mention the Caps last night?

  183. Secret wasian man - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:23 AM

devastating. would have rather never been in the game. Only needed one strike. a complete and utter choke. Just end it so the healing can begin.

  184. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:24 AM

… in any sport, the best team wins. It just hurts far too much when we've got so much invested in one of those teams, and turns out the other team was better.

  185. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:24 AM

It really was a good season. We will recover from this at some point. Really, my heart is breaking for these guys.

  186. Secret wasian man - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:25 AM

i want to puke. Nobody gonna sleep tonight. Especially Drew.

  187. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:25 AM

I at least expected Drew to get Kozma. You walk the tying and winning runs on and you are playing with fire. DeScalso gets you for 2, keep it at that. allowing Kozma to add on the go ahead runs, unacceptable.

  188. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:26 AM

    Imaginary friends–you are awesome.

  189. rogieshan - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:26 AM

Nats fans deserved a better fate tonight.

  190. Secret wasian man - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:27 AM

great season. but an absolute choke by Drew. Awful way to end a season. now onto that shitty subway ride.

  191. Swift Eagle - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:27 AM

Ouch…The walks were bad, but StL hit our pitchers like nobody else all year…Trying to make perfect pitches to avoid contact=walks…

  192. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:28 AM

It was a great year and above my expectations. This was all bonus baseball for me.

  193. natscan reduxit - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:29 AM

Don't forget. When this season began, all we expected, maybe all we hoped for, was a winning season and a run at a Wild Card. I'd say the year was a success.Thank You Nationals for one of the best summers of my sixty six years. Hope I'm around when you do it again next year.

  194. Exposremains - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:29 AM

no more baseball for me for a while

  195. Smatt1001 - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:29 AM

And it ends with a popup…the bane of our postseason…

  196. rogieshan - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:29 AM

Never thought it could – and would – end this way. Not fair.

  197. Smatt1001 - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:31 AM

Natscan reduxit – Good Point. Thanks Nats for an amazing season just so sad it ended with a heart breaker.

  198. realdealnats - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:31 AM

It was a great season. Yanks taught us half way through, and Cards taught us tonight. Next year with Stras I don't think we lose a series like this. You guys were great. I learned a lot from everyone–except when to shut up in the 9th.

  199. baseballswami - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:31 AM

I still love my Nats. I will get perspective on this and appreciate the season. This will drive them .

  200. Secret wasian man - Oct 13, 2012 at 4:31 AM

Spare me the we never expected to be here crap. Drew pooped all over himself and let a ton of fans down and his teammates. now we have to wait 365 days to get back here.
