Video: On LaRoche, E-Jax, Davey

Oct 16, 2012, 5:00 PM EDT

The Hot Stove League won’t heat up for several more weeks, but it’s never too early to look at some of the biggest offseason storylines.

In this segment from CSN’s Geico SportsNet Central, I discuss three key decisions involving the Nationals: 1) Whether to re-sign Adam LaRoche to a long-term extension, 2) whether to bring Edwin Jackson back or seek another veteran starting pitcher and 3) whether Davey Johnson wants to continue managing in 2013 and beyond.

  1. Dave - Oct 16, 2012 at 6:01 PM

I hope you're right about Davey, Mark. I'd really like to see him back next year. Same with ALR.

  2. BigCat - Oct 16, 2012 at 6:11 PM

Wonder if Davey is gonna stay inhouse for his 3rd base coach…..or maybe bring in one of his old Mets….Wally Backman

  3. MicheleS - Oct 16, 2012 at 6:12 PM

Dave, what browser are you on? I am on IE and video is not showing. and tried Firefox, but that didn't work either. HMMM??

  4. Faraz Shaikh - Oct 16, 2012 at 6:18 PM

    firefox and it worked.

  5. Theophilus T. S. - Oct 16, 2012 at 6:23 PM

No offense but any discussion about keeping Jackson is a waste of bandwidth.

  6. djinFl. - Oct 16, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Post article says Davey wants to return, waiting for ownership to do the deal.

  7. Dave - Oct 16, 2012 at 7:33 PM

MicheleS, my school just today put Google Chrome on the network (unsupported), and it plays just fine. Right now I'm on Firefox on my MacBook Pro and it's working okay too.In fact, it annoyingly starts playing, sound and all, whenever I hit this page.

  8. Section 222 - Oct 16, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Dave, I know! And worse than that, it starts playing an ad, so you can't stop it, and can't turn the sound down, except by turning it down on your whole computer. Mark, anything you can do about that for those of us sneaking peeks at comments at work?

  9. SonnyG10 - Oct 16, 2012 at 7:44 PM

I'm on IE and I can't get the video either.

  10. natsfan1a - Oct 16, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Thanks, Mark. Now that we know what Adam will want, what is Drake asking? ;-)MicheleS, I had issues viewing videos here with Firefox at one point. Turned out it was a setting with my ad blocker, fwiw.

  11. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 16, 2012 at 7:57 PM

I can't see it either. Kilgore got a good interview. Davey is justified in many of his answers because in the end it was his closer with a 2 run lead and he has to do his job.

  12. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Oct 16, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Seems like we either a) can't get the video or b) can't get it to stop.Mark, you've really learned this TV gig. But I'm kinda biased toward the printed word.

  13. Bob Sagert - Oct 16, 2012 at 9:59 PM

I hope Davey comes back. he is one of the main reasons why they were so good this season. Do you all think here is any chance of Davey not coming hack? if he doesn't come back for whatever reason, who would replace him?

  14. Joe Seamhead - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:10 PM

I'm on a Mac, using Firefox, no problems at all.

  15. Dave - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:19 PM

Interesting. On my iPhone, the mobile site does not auto-start the video, but it plays just fine when I click it. With no ad.

  16. natsfan1a - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:27 PM

I think something might have been adjusted since the video was uploaded, as it doesn't start automatically now (at least, not for me). It starts after you click on the "play" arrow. If somebody did tweak that, thanks!

  17. 5c3cd06e-cef8-11e1-abe6-000bcdcb2996 - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:35 PM

Use firefox.. works just fine.LaRoche will find a way to stay with the team. He knows it is a great team and wouldn't want to start anew at his stage of the game. He is the best 1st baseman on the team by far. Morse is a better fielder than Moore, so we'll have to wait and see how it develops. EJax? At $11 million per year this year he'd have to take a haircut to stay with the team.

  18. Theophilus T. S. - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Jackson at $1/year would be too much.

  19. MicheleS - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:45 PM

Tried firefox, giving up. I can see videos on other sites (saw the Stras Video game review).

  20. peric - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:48 PM

LaRoche will find a way to stay with the team. He knows it is a great team and wouldn't want to start anew at his stage of the game. He is the best 1st baseman on the team by far. Morse is a better fielder than Moore, so we'll have to wait and see how it develops. Expect it to boil down to number of years not money. If LaRoche agrees to an EJax-like deal where he would be way overpaid on a 2 year deal with a third year buy-out option it could happen. If Adam wants the security of a 4 year or more it won't.EJax was paid 11 million just for this year just because of the imminent Strasburg shutdown. That's not the case next season. His salary would go back to more normal levels for any team he might sign with … may be Pittsburgh finally gets him?

  21. baseballswami - Oct 16, 2012 at 10:56 PM

American League Baseball – Debates. Never have I missed the Nats more. Shoot me now.

  22. MicheleS - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:05 PM

FYI for your DVR settings: Masn Nationals Classics this thursday at 10 AM Bryce's 1st walkoff ( I think that is the one with the awkward hug with Zim)

  23. natsfan1a - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:16 PM

Michele, can you see the videos on the Comcast site? That worked for me when I was having problems here, although I had to tweak my ad blocker.

  24. MicheleS - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:19 PM

1A.. Nope nothing on the CSN website either. Tried looking at other videos and still get the big white blob. I tried on my phone, I get to see the add, but then nothing after that.

  26. natsfan1a - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:26 PM

Bummer. Oh well, back to the drawing board. In other news, I decided to try dipping my toe into some kinda sorta baseball-related stuff and watch a bit of Intentional Talk today. Phil Coke is pretty darned funny, imo. Anyhoo, baby steps. Later.

  27. MicheleS - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:30 PM

Swami.. I might succomb and watch.. soccer. When does the Australian Baseball League come on?

  28. baseballswami - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:41 PM

Mark is trying to ease us into the post season and get us excited for 2013. I think he is trying too hard and trying to do too much. He needs to stay within himself and see the word, write the word. He does have quick hands and so it should stay fair and not go foul. I think he is about ready to break out and knock one out of the park, though. Michele – THIS season that just ended is on masn nationals classics already? Ok – sold, setting the dvr now. It's all we've got.

  29. MicheleS - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:47 PM

Swami, next week we get the Ramos walkoff. I am all for Nats Classics doing this year and last year. THat way we get to hear FP and not Dribble

  30. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 16, 2012 at 11:58 PM

baseballswami, from the other thread, Yes on Bryce. CF has been a big hole since Wilkerson left. Wilkerson had a .756 OPS in 2005 and Willie Harris .757 in 2009 and Bryce finished at .817 Hard to even remember Willie HaHa was the primary CF in 2009.

  31. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:02 AM

Tonight. I am a Tigers Fan!

  32. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:05 AM

Michele- when I hear Dibble now I just cringe. The more recent " classics" are soooooo much better. Are they on at a regular time or all over the place? Would like to DVR

  33. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:05 AM

Michele- did you see the ny line-up????

  34. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:06 AM

Swami.. All over the place.. You know since The Devil Angelos owns MASN. Search Nationals Classics on your DVR and record the ones you want. That way you can skip Dribble.

  35. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:08 AM

Swami.. Yup.. ARod will be hitting on the Ladies in Detroits since he is sitting. Swisher's poor post season performance will cost him MEGA $$$$ and Verlander better deal, because I hate the Yankees.

  36. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:13 AM

Nats were 65-36 in games where Morse had an AB in 2012. Based on that winning percentage for Morse the Nats would have won 104 games. You tell me if the Nats are better or worse with or without him and think about that was with an injured Morse as he played most of the year with the bad lat and bad hand and bad wrist.Yes, his health is a key. When Morse scored a run in 2012, the Nats were 30-11 which is a .732 Winning Percentage.Yes, his health is a key.

  37. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:23 AM

Nats were 89-56 in games where RZim had an AB in 2012. Based on that winning percentage for RZim the Nats would have won 99 games. When RZim scored a run in 2012, the Nats were 55-17 which is a .764 Winning Percentage.

  38. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:27 AM

What frustrated me about our lineup is that on paper they all CAN be dangerous from top to bottom, but they very rarely were all healthy and hitting well all together. When they were, it was a thing if beauty. It could be a murderous lineup.

  39. Joe Seamhead - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:31 AM

    Interesting stats, Gonat.

  40. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:35 AM

Swami, that is why all injuries MUST be taken care of NOW.. No lingering issues into Spring Training..

  41. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:40 AM

I especially hope Zim get his done quickly. Thinking Morse might need some work done on his hand.

  42. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:48 AM

baseballswami, probably the best stat indicator I could find to predict a Win is if Jayson Werth scores a run the Winning Percentage goes up to .781When Bryce scores a run the Winning Percentage is .743

  43. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:54 AM

We all aren't feeling too good about the Cardinals right now but I will say that Chris Carpenter is a leader of men. All off-season he leads workouts for the pitchers and has for many years. Trevor Rosenthal and Shelby Miller are both staying the off-season with Carpenter to workout with him.I know Werth does that for the position players but I think only Zim and Lombo participate.I wish the Nats had a pitcher to lead the guys.

  44. DC Sports Guy - Oct 17, 2012 at 12:56 AM

Must keep LaRoche and Davey! I heard some news of the Nationals getting outfielder BJ Upton. Where would they put Morse? http://dmvsportsfan.blogspot.com/

  45. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:01 AM

Gonat.. That's what happens when you have a pitching staff all under the age of 28. No Vets to take them under their wings. I would be okay if We got a seasoned vet that would do that. Not sure who fits that profile. I could see JZ taking that role in the future, but we have to find guys that would want to go Ice Fishing in the off season. I hope Tyler Moves in with ALR and hunts all off season

  46. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:08 AM

Were we expecting EJax to be the wise veteran? He had just come off of a world series win and has thrown a no -hitter ( well, he walked about 8, so it was interesting), so maybe the organization thought that would give him stature with the younger guys? When I watch him, those things don't compute to me. It surprises me that he has done them.I guess since he never really unpacks anywhere, he doesn't form long term relationships? I heard some of the younger guys talk about Michael Gonzalez. They are all pretty young. Gio has loosened them up, but who is going to calm him down?

  47. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:11 AM

Gonat, Ron Villone filled the pitcher leadership role for anyone in the NYC area but he was a short timer with the team but had good results with Lannan in 2011.It is important for the Lerners and Rizzo to encourage their pitchers to set up full year residence in DC and hire an off-season mentor to show these guys how to do it.

  48. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:15 AM

Ghost.. I think we may see that when the Nats decide where new Spring Training home is. Once that is settled in FL (hopefully), then I could see the Pitchers and even some position players setting up camp their Vs DC (it's a Tax thing and a warm weather thing).

  49. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:16 AM

    Thank GOD. Detroit up 1-0

  50. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:22 AM

baseballswami, it sure wasn't Livan unless his mentoring on golf and gambling was a good thing. I think Rizzo has that opportunity this year to find his Chris Carpenter and insist this person set up residence in DC. I think Lohse could be the guy.I think that is what is missing having a true Vet mentor who will lead and be here longterm. Gio and the others could use a peer mentor.

  51. Ghost Of Steve M. - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:24 AM

MicheleS, I always liked how the Redskins made DC their permanent homes and when I lived in Virginia they were a regular part of the community.

  52. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:27 AM

Ghost.. The difference with NFL is that season is mainly during school year, so if players had kids, they would have them in the town they were playing in. It's so different with MLB (Drake being the exception). I would just be happy with DC or Spring Training site. Some place they could all congregate.

  53. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:30 AM

Only Lombo, Werth and Zim live here right now I think. I did have this thought about our outfielders, though — since we are playing AL games all throughout the season now, instead of just in a few weeks time, it will be nice to have Morse to DH. If he DH's in every AL park throughout the season, it might keep him healthier. We could platoon Moore and Bernie in left, depending on whether or not the pitcher is right or left. Does this new structure mean we will play more AL games or just that they will be distributed differently? Previously when they were all bunched up it was an opportunity to rest starters by having them DH, but I could see Morse just being the regular DH for us. Might increase his value to us at this point. This just in – the news gets worse for NY as their pitcher, who had been lights out, leaves with an apparent injury.

  54. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:32 AM

baseballswami, put a fork in NYY.

  55. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:38 AM

So my house is tidy, my bills are paid, my work is caught up, I have gas on my car and groceries in the frig. I have slept. Funny how getting 3 or 4 hours a day back can have that effect. That being said , it's totally boring.

  56. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:40 AM

From the Sports Bog on the decisive 9th inning of Game 5“That’s the second first-pitch slider that Storen has thrown in this inning that looked to be a strike,” color man Bob Brenly added. “Just didn’t get the call. And didn’t get a real good job from his catcher receiving the pitch.” Indeed, Kurt Suzuki wound up dipping his mitt considerably to catch the slider.

I suggest you wash it off.

  58. sjm308 - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:48 AM

Swami: good point that I had not really thought about. Morse probably would tell you he did not like the dh role, but if it was presented that we have a certain number of games throughout the season, maybe he adjusts. I still can't watch baseball. kind of silly but its just not time yet. I especially will not watch the NL games and have no desire to see AL baseball so maybe by the WS I will come aroundGo Nats!!

  59. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:51 AM

    Go DETROIT!!!!

  60. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:51 AM

Yeah, Gonat- tiny screen plus auto correct equals mangled meanings. There is only gas IN my car.

  61. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Cabrera can hit, Verlander can pitch. If you are forced to watch AL baseball as a last resort at least it's the two of them.

  62. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:55 AM

sjm, its easy to watch baseball. Root for Detroit and SFG.While the Cardinals are big time braggers, they gave some good feedback. Others had commented the same beforehand and they confirmed it.Storen should be thankful to learn from this. I'm actually more concerned about Gio. You can't show your enemy your pain and the Cardinals saw it and exploited it.

  63. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 1:57 AM

Has Prince Fielder always been so —– very large?? I don't watch AL and don't remember much from 2011.

  64. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:00 AM

Seriously- you all should turn on the game. We can all have a rousing game of "guess who that guy is that is playing for the Yankees". I only recognize a few of them. Very weird.

  65. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:05 AM

Swami.. weirdly, I have no problem watching the ALCS.. can't really watch NLCS..

  66. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:12 AM

Michele – I just don't like American League baseball and most especially the Yankees. But watching Verlander is always entertaining. Who are those guys playing in pinstripes, though? Not exactly household names playing for them tonight.

  67. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:23 AM

The sideling reporter guy with the crazy suits calls the lumbar "lumber" and Marco Scutaro "Scooteroo". Not sure if that is part of his "thing" but he sounds like an idiot.

  68. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:27 AM

Gonat.. Any sideline reporter wearing a Purple Velour jacket and a purple paisley tie cannot be taken seriously.

  69. MicheleS - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:32 AM

The single best thing about the ALCS tonight, I can follow the debates on Twitter and get the funniest comments about both candidates. Watch baseball, not waste time on debate.

  70. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:32 AM

MicheleS, agreed. I thought he was a basketball guy.

    Gonat.. ATL.. Tick Tock..

  73. Gonat - Oct 17, 2012 at 2:40 AM

I wonder if the Atlanta shortstop will use injuries as an excuse in 2013.

  74. rogieshan - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:04 AM

The way the Yankees are hitting, you'd think they were playing for Charles Comiskey.

I haven't watched NLCS either. Taped it and read that SFO won, so I thought I might watch, but haven't quite gotten there yet.

  78. Joe Seamhead - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:36 AM

Wow! The Yankees went down pretty easily. I doubt the networks are too happy. Too bad, so sad.(Not!)

  79. baseballswami - Oct 17, 2012 at 9:38 AM

I don 't know if they even care anymore. None of their media darlings are playing. How did this team get irrelevant so fast? Sure, they squeaked by the upstart O's, but , boy do they have issues. Tired if their whining. Can't wait for them to be gone!
