Game 49: Phillies at Nats

May 25, 2013, 7:40 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Dan Haren faces Jonathan Pettibone tonight at Nationals Park.

After a solid, 5-2 victory last night to open their homestand, the Nationals are sticking with their same lineup for the middle game of this weekend series against the Phillies. Might as well stick with what worked, including Kurt Suzuki in the 6-spot, with Tyler Moore and Steve Lombardozzi behind him.

That lineup tonight will go up against right-hander Jonathan Pettibone, seeking to become the Phillies' first rookie to go 4-0 to begin his career since Kyle Kendrick (last night's starter) in 2007. Dan Haren gets the nod for the Nationals, hoping his ragged outing in San Diego was a mere blip on an otherwise upward trend for the veteran.

Jeff Kobernus, meanwhile, officially had his contract purchased from Class AAA Syracuse and is available off the bench. Yunesky Maya has officially been designated for assignment, possibly ending his four-year tenure in the Nationals organization.

Remember: Tonight's game is on Fox. It'll be Tom McCarthy and Bill Ripken with the call. So that's a Phillies play-by-ply guy and a former Oriole. Enjoy…

Just more excuses. I'm so sick of hearing excuses. Just do your job.No excuse. An explanation or my observation of him this season. He is throwing the ball differently but they are letting him take baby steps its true … without options they are doing what they would normally do in the minors in the majors.

  2. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:27 AM

Peric, save yourself some grief. That's an average of $12,500,000. If you have a problem with it, talk to Rizzo.

  3. NatsJack in Florida - May 26, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Anybody seen Henry Aaron play lately?

  4. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:29 AM

Anybody seen Henry Aaron play lately?Lots of tape made in the way back. Still possible to see.

  5. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 1:30 AM

    Come on Ian

  6. NatsJack in Florida - May 26, 2013 at 1:31 AM

I'm pretty tired of playing with a 23 1/2man roster. That's accounting for Henry and the 1/2 ball player that Espinosa has been.

  7. David Proctor - May 26, 2013 at 1:32 AM

That would've been a nice run to have, Desi.

  8. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:32 AM

Now, its really heart-attack time: Storen. 5.0 ERA.

  9. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:32 AM

Have to capitalize on their lousy front of their bullpen.Disappointing.

  10. Joe Seamhead - May 26, 2013 at 1:32 AM

    Somebody has no excuse.

  11. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 1:33 AM

Now 8 left on 5 in scoring position. Lack of clutch hitting.

  12. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:33 AM

That's accounting for Henry and the 1/2 ball player that Espinosa has been.Natsjack let me save you and Ghost some grief you'll have to talk to Rizzo about that.

NatsJack in Florida said… I'm pretty tired of playing with a 23 1/2man roster. That's accounting for Henry and the 1/2 ball player that Espinosa has been. May 25, 2013 9:31 PM Espi should apply for membership to the Goon Squad. He would fit right in.

    Web gem

  15. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:35 AM

    What a play by Lombo!

  16. NatsJack in Florida - May 26, 2013 at 1:36 AM

For people that prefer the truth, Storen's ERA os 4.50, not 5.0.

  17. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:36 AM

All teams seem to be trying to bunt on Storen. That almost worked.

  18. Joe Seamhead - May 26, 2013 at 1:36 AM

Lucky for Lombo, but a freaking great play by Adam LaRoche!

  19. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:37 AM

For people that prefer the truth, Storen's ERA os 4.50, not 5.0. … and 3.44 for Henry meanwhile Drew issues a walk.

  20. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:38 AM

NatsJack, down to 4.42 and why would the truth ever work for Peric. He couldn't make a point otherwise.I'm not saying Storen has been spectaculer but better than Henry IMO.

  21. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 1:39 AM

No walk Drew its the 8th

  22. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:39 AM

Peric, it wouldn't matter if Henry was 3.00 He has pitched in low stress situations. Usually getting the bottom of the order.

  23. Joe Seamhead - May 26, 2013 at 1:40 AM

    Four K's on Ryan Howard!

  24. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:41 AM

I'm not saying Storen has been spectaculer but better than Henry IMO.You were saying?

  25. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:42 AM

How does Young score on that. Come on.

  26. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:42 AM

Peric, it wouldn't matter if Henry was 3.00 He has pitched in low stress situations. Usually getting the bottom of the order. And today? It was 3-3 in the seventh.

  27. David Proctor - May 26, 2013 at 1:42 AM

We should've had Clip in here. He's actually been good. Drew hasn't.

  28. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:43 AM

Storen's walk comes back to bite him.

  29. SCNatsFan - May 26, 2013 at 1:43 AM

C'mon Storen step it up you are costing us games

  30. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:43 AM

I'm not saying Storen has been spectaculer but better than Henry IMO.Again, you were saying? What's your excuse now Ghost?

  31. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:43 AM

Peric got his 5.00+ ERA now.

  32. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:44 AM

Storen's walk comes back to bite him.And you dude … that's what you get for dissing Henry.

  33. djinFl. - May 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

    poking the bear NJ?

  34. NatsJack in Florida - May 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

As stated time and time again, I have no use for relief pitchers that walk hitters. None.

  35. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Storen went to Stanford, but sure didnt learn not to walk peiple late in agame. Especially one who had K 3 times. That walk opened ball of problems. Tell me he is better than HROD the month of May. No way.

  36. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Davey always seems hesitant to pull a relief pitcher and go to a matchup. You now have Abad. Use him in the lefty/lefty.

  37. hiramhover - May 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

    Jeez, Drew.

  38. Joe Seamhead - May 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

And peric, the supposed Nats fan, sits in his dark room at his computer laughing gleefully.

  39. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Peric got his 5.00+ ERA now. This is the Natsjack blog we must be accurate right? Its actually 5.30 right now. Right Natsjack? Now, Storen hasn't been right since his surgery last season. He has options. He is one pitcher than can send to the minors to work things out.

  40. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Joe Seamhead, sadly that is just what I pictured.

  41. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:47 AM

And peric, the supposed Nats fan, sits in his dark room at his computer laughing gleefully.Yeah right … you'd like to think that wouldn't you damned moron. The most moronic, simpering, petulant child speaks. Moron.

  42. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:48 AM

Storen is in a similar situation as Espi. Nobody on this team should feel that they have a permanent spot on this team.Storen isn't doing it but I wouldn't trust Henry late in any game unless there was a 4 run deficit.

  43. SonnyG10 - May 26, 2013 at 1:48 AM

Feel bad for Storen. Watching his career go up in smoke. Feel bad for us too!

  44. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:49 AM

Joe Seamhead, sadly that is just what I pictured. And they claim I'm arrogant Ghost. YOU ARE THE EPITOMY of it just like a certain trollish poster likes to claim.

  45. David Proctor - May 26, 2013 at 1:49 AM

What can we do with Drew? Our bullpen is already depleted. We can't just send him down without a replacement. I'd venture a guess Rizzo is watching some of those teams that are falling out of contention for a bullpen arm.

  46. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 1:50 AM

We strand guys all night and then Drew comes in and throws up all over himself. This team is exactly what the record says it is. Any aspirations of playoffs should just be put aside. Not even in the same sentence as the Braves.

  47. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 1:50 AM

Storen seems to gives up a run every otger game.Is he hurt or is it a head case?

  48. NatsJack in Florida - May 26, 2013 at 1:51 AM

And Henry Aaron hasn't played a game in over 36 years, yet somehow found his way into this blog tonite. And only one poster continues to call people names.

  49. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:51 AM

Feel bad for Storen. Watching his career go up in smoke. Feel bad for us too!My Gawd what is it with you people? Gloom and doom sheesh! He's far too young for that. But he hasn't succeeded in overcoming the adversity of his first injury. I want to know why. And fast. Or at least I would if I were Rizzo.

  50. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:52 AM

And only one poster continues to call people names.Well deserved names. NJ. Well deserved.

  51. SCNatsFan - May 26, 2013 at 1:52 AM

Manassas I don't know but like I said yesterday either his elbow or his head has something wrong. He isn't fooling anyone.

  52. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:53 AM

T-MO FINALLY he draws a walk!! LOVE IT! Happy dance!!!

  53. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:53 AM

Why is Lombo bunting at a ball over his shoulders? Come on. Pull the bat back.

  54. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 1:53 AM

Its not the injuries or the manager or the weather. Its a LOFT problem LACK OF F N TALENT.

  55. peric - May 26, 2013 at 1:54 AM

What can we do with Drew? Our bullpen is already depleted. We can't just send him down without a replacement. They'll just have to make due with Erik Davis who was placed on the 40-man roster just for this purpose.

  56. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:55 AM

Unlucky BABIP there. Darn. Right at Rollins.

  57. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 1:57 AM

    Tracy due another pinch homer

  58. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Nats need some clutch. Horrible horrible horrible pinch-hitting appearance from Tracy.

  59. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Nats 28th or worse in all batting stats. No room for bad pitching with those numbers. This team just not very good. Time for change.

  60. baseballswami - May 26, 2013 at 1:59 AM

Drew had like 43 saves not that long ago. That just could not have been an accident as we only won 80 games. He is not right, but I hate to write him off after surgery, a traumatic experience and a major change in roles. No margin for error here for anyone struggling. We are going to need him. How upside down is our world right now that HRod has better numbers than Storen? This is a strange game. So much for three runs being enough.

  61. David Proctor - May 26, 2013 at 2:00 AM

BABIP just robbed us big time. Lombo's hit was right at Rollins and Span's to Mayberry. Both hit well. I've liked the hitting today, despite the score.

  62. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 2:00 AM

More unlucky BABIP. Span clobbered that ball.

  63. baseballswami - May 26, 2013 at 2:01 AM

Yes, the hitting is definitely better. Tonight it's the pitching. Sheesh.

  64. peric - May 26, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Storen isn't doing it but I wouldn't trust Henry late in any game unless there was a 4 run deficit.Small sample size but they did today and he came through. They need to continue doing what they are doing with him to get his control under control so-to-speak. They are going to need him more and more as time goes by.

  65. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Chad Tracy has one big pinch hit all year. He stinks. Everybody off that bench (minus Lombo) STINKS. The fact that Rizzo brings nobody up must mean they all STINK. We flounder around .500 while the Braves pull further and further ahead. Whats the point anymore?

  66. peric - May 26, 2013 at 2:03 AM

    Kobernus in for Moore now.

  67. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Too many role players aren't doing their jobs. Chad Tracy 1st pitch swinging, Drew Storen gives up a walk and then 2 hits, and Lombo's failed bunt attempts.

  68. Joe Seamhead - May 26, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Jonathan Papelbon against Harper, Zimm and LaRoche in the ninth.

  69. baseballswami - May 26, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Will we ever again in my life time have a walk off win?

  70. peric - May 26, 2013 at 2:05 AM

We flounder around .500 while the Braves pull further and further ahead. Whats the point anymore?Patience Grasshopper. Staring on June 1st ( the magic date when such changes normally occur) the changes you seek might just occur. However, they might not be what you are expecting …

  71. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 2:06 AM

Who you kidding? Clutch hitting is terrible. We have 10 at bats with men is scoring position only 2 score. that is good ?We have left 6 guys in scoring position Phils have left 1 that is why we are losing. The fact Storens last 3 gamrs have been terrible is a side note.

  72. baseballswami - May 26, 2013 at 2:06 AM

    Sigh…

  73. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 2:06 AM

peric said… Kobernus in for Moore now. May 25, 2013 10:03 PM Yah, saw him pinch-run for him last inning.

  74. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 2:07 AM

5.5 games back. barely over .500. Os coming in who hit a ton. Braves next weekend. UGHH But hey, I saved 8 percent on my car insurance.

  75. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 2:08 AM

When are going to get a real hitting coach?

  76. David Proctor - May 26, 2013 at 2:09 AM

None of those things mean anything in May. Remember the Angels who were so awful? They've won 8 straight and are looking good all of a sudden. Remember the Giants in 2010? They were .500 at this point.Just relax everyone. There are positive signs out of this game.

  77. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 2:10 AM

Peric, are you saying on June 1st things may get even uglier?

  78. peric - May 26, 2013 at 2:10 AM

They have to decide what they are going to do about Espinosa. Whether he needs to go on the DL, hopefully get surgeries now and not wait. Then, changes including a replacement backup at shortstop. Some of these guys have a four or five day try out. Lombo seems to be one of the very few that are aware of that possibility.

  79. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 2:11 AM

SWM, certainly can't wait 45 more days for Tracy's next big hit. His job is to get a ball to drive. That looked like a outside fastball that was a little up in the zone.

  80. peric - May 26, 2013 at 2:11 AM

Peric, are you saying on June 1st things may get even uglier? It got pretty ugly for me and many others when they decided to move Morse out of left-field, Harper out of center and Span in. You never know what Rizzo might decide to do.

  81. SCNatsFan - May 26, 2013 at 2:12 AM

Sooner or later our relievers have to learn we just cannot give free passes late in games. Just killing us.

  82. Secret wasian man - May 26, 2013 at 2:13 AM

Has the culture of losing around here gotten so big that we are happy about some positives even though we lose???? HAHA "you play the game to win the game." When will everyone wakeup and realize they are not very good.

  83. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 2:16 AM

I knew Tim Timmons who we all hate would get involved. Bryce swings at one in the dirt one of my pet peeves.Ball should have gone to the screen instead Timmons does his pele imitation and the ball hits his foot Harpernot on first. Thn Zim singles

  84. SCNatsFan - May 26, 2013 at 2:17 AM

I am starting to think, with no evidence to back it up, that the soriano signing really got in drew's head

  85. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 25, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Big Cat text me same thin SC.I say then Drew is weak mentally if that is the case.

  86. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 2:22 AM

Game day says. Foit outside though I guess 8 inches. i hate Tim Timmins

  87. Ghost Of Steve M. - May 26, 2013 at 2:22 AM

Doesn't FOX have a pitch-track? Would love to have seen where that Strike 3 to LaRoche really was.

  88. Nats Fan in Brazil - May 26, 2013 at 2:23 AM

So we should have bases loaded no outs, but thanks to the umpire we are 2 outs and one on! Thank u tim

  89. baseballswami - May 26, 2013 at 2:26 AM

    Oh, poop.

  90. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 2:27 AM

Game day had it 8-12 inchesout.I hate Tim Timmins.

  91. Joe Seamhead - May 26, 2013 at 2:30 AM

Good performance by Papelbon. Their best against ours and he beat us. Get 'em tomorrow.I really like Davey but wasn't thrilled on his situational managing of the pitching tonight.

  92. David Proctor - May 26, 2013 at 2:33 AM

We should be riding the hot hand. I understand a need to get Drew into a groove, but in a tie game, Clippard has been lights out lately. He needs to be in the game at that point.Davey has been the first to admit that he's struggling to figure out how to use the bullpen.

  93. Greg Essner - May 26, 2013 at 2:33 AM

time for davey to go take espi with you this team is absolute garbage

  94. Manassas Nats' Fan - May 26, 2013 at 2:35 AM

As much as I hate Tim Timmins I hate Rick Eckstein.I see no urgancy with his troops.2 for 11 RISP. 11 left on base. 7 in scoring position. I know Eck doesn't hit, but no evidence that he coaches during the game either.
