Espinosa to DL, H-Rod and Duke DFA’d

Jun 4, 2013, 8:40 PM EST

[Updated 6:07 p.m.]

Returning home a game below .500 after a series loss against the Atlanta Braves, the Nationals made major roster moves on Tuesday in attempt to right the ship.

Second baseman Danny Espinosa was sent to the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 3), and relief pitchers Henry Rodgriguez and Zach Duke were designated for assignment. Called up to replace them were infielder Anthony Rendon from the Syracuse Chiefs and relief pitcher Ian Krol from the Harrisburg Senators. Outfielder Jayson Werth was also activated from the disabled list.
“It was a tough day for me,” manager Davey Johnson said. “Any time you have to designate a couple of your family to the waiver list, it’s tough. You feel a little lost that you couldn’t have put them in situations to get better. So it hurts, it hurts both ways.”
It has nothing to do with trying something different,” general manager Mike Rizzo said. “It’s putting the best 25 out there at this particular time to help us win baseball games.

Mark- a lot is being made of the cleaned out locker. Is that the usual for DL or not??

  4. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:51 PM

About d*** time. What took you so long!

  5. livernonions - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:53 PM

The bullpen moves must have to help team morale. It just can't be good when a pitcher (Duke or HRod) comes in and you just know that disaster is lurking. As for Espinosa, I hope they take a long-term view and get the shoulder surgery out of the way. Better to write off this year for him than to continue to wait and see and then decide to do it after a year of miserable offensive production.

  6. TimDz - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Espi will get surgery on the should by the end of the month. I think the 15 day DL was to get his attention….

  7. Constant Reader - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Thought Boz had a better idea yesterday. Rendon spends a month as a full-time 2B at Syracuse until the 4th of July and then if it looks like he's ready and Lombo isn't hitting .350, then you bring him up. Why not Corey Brown for week? Not complaining in the least to see the plug pulled on all three.

  8. David Proctor - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:57 PM

Ry Zim on Danny Espinosa: "I think the league has adjusted to him and now he has to adjust back." #NatsDoesn't sound like Zimmmerman thinks Danny is suffering due to injury.

  9. baseballswami - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:57 PM

Interesting that it's very carefully stated as DL for the wrist. I was truly afraid he would get booed at Nats Park tonight.

  10. NattieNation13 - Jun 4, 2013 at 8:58 PM

amen. was just thinking to myself, "hey, espi could be REJOINING the squad today if he just went on the DL six weeks ago when he fractured his wrist in the first place!" love all the fresh blood in the clubhouse. reminds me of last year when we turned to our farm and got big production from Harper and Moore. a little worried that Rendon hasnt taken enough reps at 2nd to turn a safe double play, but apparently Tony Beasley says he is ready, and he knows better than I!

Danny Espinosa to the DL – about time. Not sure why we just didn't give Romero a chance rather than bring up Krol? I think HRod was pitch a little better lately, but I'm fine with that move.BTW – Favey is wrong, no way does Duke get claimed (remember when Davey though Young would get a ML job).

this is good but hate that Rizzo and Johnson are so disingenuous during interviews. They must be catching politician's disease the way they spin everything. Who were they trying to fool? The fans only want to know the truth and can actually respect a little spin but lately is been hard to stomach

Is Espi out of options? If they send him down could another team take him?Maybe thats why the DL and not the minors.

  20. baseballswami - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Ladson says it is definitely out of the ordinary to have the locker cleaned out. That is why they thought AAA.

David Proctor said… Ry Zim on Danny Espinosa: "I think the league has adjusted to him and now he has to adjust back." #NatsDoesn't sound like Zimmmerman thinks Danny is suffering due to injury. June 04, 2013 4:57 PM It is harsh and along the lines of what I have been saying for almost 2 years. He never adjusted back in 2011.

  26. Section 222 - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:10 PM

Not to worry, Espi has options.

  27. David Proctor - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Rizzo said they may have Espinosa to spend time in the minors when he's healthy. They will also look at shoulder in addition to wrist #Nats. Rizzo says the Nats will put Espinosa "in a position to put his feet on the ground" once healthy. Meaning a possible option.

  28. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:21 PM

Whoever keeps calling for Romero…..the man has been on the DL and hasn't pitched since May friggin 8th. The option was totally his call.

  29. nats guy - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Swami,Ian Kroll wa suspended for 50 games a couple of years ago for using gay slurs on his social network account. He has good stuff but apparently not smart enough to shut up. Thats why the Nats were able to acquire him rather inexpensively.

  30. sm13 - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:23 PM

I agree with "Wow!' Now all we have to do is start winning and waitfor Bryce, Ross and Stras to get healthy…

  31. TimDz - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:24 PM

Up to this point, the only notable thing Krol did was get suspended by the A's for making racist comments…

  32. JaneB - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:24 PM

I'm glad Espi will get some time, and expect it will turn into a longer term thing. But the cleaned out locker got my attention. Do they clean out their locker when they get injured? That sounds very different to me than what I expect. Werth is hanging out while he's been on the DL. Morse was there most of the time he was on the DL. Seems mighty odd to me.

  33. nats guy - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:25 PM

    TimDz,Not racial, sexual slurs.

  34. Donald - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:25 PM

I'm fine with all of these moves. I think Espinosa is a special fielder and if he can figure out the hitting approach could be an all-star. I'm hoping that in two years, RZimm is at 1b, Rendon at 3B and Espinosa is back at second.

  35. Theophilus T. S. - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Back in the mists of time, when Espinosa was first called up it was thought he was a year away. Then he went hell's-a-poppin' through the first two weeks of September and the organizational thinking changed. I wonder what he might have accomplished with an extra 3-6 months at Syracuse.I'm hoping for eggnog on the GM's face when nobody claims Rodriguez on waivers.

  36. NattieNation13 - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:29 PM

There's no way 29 teams pass on HRod. He thew 102mph in his last outing. Some organization is going to think a change of scenery and a new pitching coach can get him to throw strikes

  37. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:30 PM

To be clear, I think the DFA for Henry Rodriguez was appropriate (and overdue). But whatever happens next with him, I will always remember that magical half-inning he pitched against the Braves in either late-August or September of 2011. I wish him well.

  38. Laddie Blah Blah - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:31 PM

"Why not Corey Brown for week?"Corey had a bad spring, and was off to a slow start the first month at Syracuse. Striking out too much, and not squaring the ball up, consistently. He went on the DL for about a month, and whatever was bothering him early on has been cured. He has been on a tear since returning to action from the DL. Was 4 for 5 last night, with 2 dingers and a double. Call him up, too, and stick him in RF until Harp is good to go.Danny has got to get that shoulder fixed. He can do it now and be ready for spring training next year. If he doesn't do that, and goes down to Syracuse, he's not thinking straight, IMO. Rendon will earn the 2nd base job. Anyone who reads my comments knows that I think he should have been there as soon as Rizzo could have managed it within the limitations imposed by the CBA.These moves are overdue, as others have pointed out, already. Krol has been effective, Duke has not. Rendon has been destroying minor league pitching, and Danny has set league lows for OBP and K to walk ratio. Brown is knocking the cover off the ball, and neither TyMo nor Bernie are above Mendoza. TyMo has options. Send him down, at least. Bernie is a tougher call. But get Brown and his power bat up in the bigs, regardless.I don't know that we will ever see Danny in a Nats uniform, again. As I, Ghost, and several others have repeatedly pointed out, the league has figured out how to pitch to him. Its like they are all following the same script. Even the Orioles knew the book.I am allowing myself to get excited about the Nats, again. I wish Henry, Duke, and Danny the best. The Nats have replaced all 3 with better players, all of whom give the Nats a better chance to win.

  39. Kevin Rusch - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:32 PM

" Some organization is going to think a change of scenery and a new pitching coach can get him to throw strikes"If so, as long as he's not in the NL East, I hope he does very well. I just can't bear watching him walk everyone in sight anymore.

When it comes down to it, going into the bottom of the ninth, difference of one run in the game, would you feel more comfortable with Henry protecting the lead or facing him. And, with regards to section222 post, I believe I just saved $50 by Rendon playing second base.

  49. JaneB - Jun 4, 2013 at 9:54 PM

I hope HRod DOES benefit from a change of scenery. I like him. He has been PFB and been breath taking to watch. He just too often took my breath away for the wrong reasons. My heart is breaking a little for Desi now. They were so powerful together, that Desi to Espi combo. Ah me.

Glad to see Rendon up. Lots of us called for it a long time ago. Need to get him at 2B now so he's comfortable and raking in early September when we make our serious run.Switch out TyMo with Corey Brown. I truly believe TyMo would be raking in AAA if he'd been playing every day like last year. He's cold. Get the hot guy up and let TyMo heat up.I predicted Stras was stubborn/smart and would turn it around and he did, but he needs to sit too for a couple weeks to cool out that oblique.Hopefully Harp is learning through sitting that playing full tilt at all costs is not the way to go in the future. He can figure this out and still get from 1B to 3B on a single.Wish Henry well, and wish Espi well. I think we will see more of Espi, but not before an extended stay on DL and AAA. But Donald has my sentiments: in a year or two Rendon @ 3B, Desi SS, Espi 2B, Zim 1B. With Espi hitting a solid 260.My long time belief and new mantra: GYFNG-OPAAT (1 pitch at a time).Anyone read SI on the Cards?Glad Henry and Duke are gone, but always hoped Henry would miraculously revisit those PFB days.

“We finally put Danny on the disabled list to clean up all the wrist questions that we had and for him to rehab and then go down to the minor leagues, with a healthy wrist, go down there and work on the mental side of hitting,” he said. The team I think had to do this as Davey couldn't make the move. It's emotional when you care about someone.

  71. David - Jun 4, 2013 at 10:38 PM

i dont know why his relationship with the club has soured. it's his own stubbornness to submit to an XRay. the club has given him MORE than enough chances to prove he can play through whatever is ailing him. it's in ESPINOSA's best interest to get that XRay so he has an excuse now for his terrible season. it shouldnt affect his relationship with the club. they've given him more time and AB's than he deserved. he has to know that and i think he's just frustrated. he's stubborn and wants to play through the injury.

  72. Salvatore Johnson - Jun 4, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Sorry it had to happen. They have tried for over a year now, ever since Rodriguez got shelled by the dodgers last May and frankly Rodriguez became a problem, just like Maya. As for Duke, it's sad because he is toward the end of his career and won't have many places to go.As for Espinosa we will probably not see him for at least through the All-Star break. After his DL stint, look for him to try and find his swing down in the minors. But we just don't know how long it will take Espinosa to get healthy again.Shame, the Nats really gave it there all with Rodriguez, sometimes things just don't work out.

  76. Steve J, Alexandria - Jun 4, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Bout time. Im down with all the moves. Espi should never have been allowed to start the season due to his injury, Duke should have been DFA'd last year — never should have dropped Morse, should have DFA'd Henry last year.Span is just mediocre on this team too.But good moves.

  77. ehay2k - Jun 4, 2013 at 11:33 PM

I'm happy for Espi that he's getting the right treatment, and sent down for the right reason – not as punishment, but to get his head together. Remember the first time Lannan got sent down, and he came back a better LannEn? I am not happy that this is now the second time Espi has had a major injury he tried to hide from the team. From now on, he passes through one of those airport body scanners every time he steps on the field! As for HRod, he needed to go as soon as the words "…I don't have anything to prove…" crossed his lips earlier this year. He just didn't get it.Lastly, Duke is probably only suited to start, so no long-term role for him here. As I type this, Desi homers -remember all those who said he needs to be traded?

  80. Teresa - Jun 5, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Espi should not only get the wrist looked at, he should get the shoulder surgery now. Even if it means writing off this season, why not? It's not as if he's contributing anything to the Nats at the plate anyway. And putting it off is just delaying the inevitable. He should have followed RZimm's lead and had the surgery after last season. Big mistake not to. But that's water under the bridge.Hallelujah that DJ and Rizzo FINALLY did something, anything to try and turn this season around, including getting rid of some players who just have not contributed in any meaningful way.Davey was asked why he stuck with Espi for so long and he admitted that he saw himself in Espi. What a ridiculous reason for a manager to continue to start a player who's hurting himself and the team in doing so.Now, let's hope they give the replacements ample time to adjust to the big leagues. After all, Espi was given over 2 years, so Rendon should be shown just as much patience and loyalty when he is called up.

Do you think Davey really thinks Duke is going to be a starter somewhere? Some of these comments appear to be divorced from reality; including the one where ML teams are now drooling over Henry Rodriguez. Good news being, good bye Henry, good bye Zach, let's stop the idiot sentimentality about Espinosa and let somebody else take a shot.

Question, with the hammer coming down on players associated with Biogenesis is Gio really in the clear. I hear names of ARod and Braun plus other (20 all together). So, is Gio on the list?I hope not!!!!

Espinosa is a jerk. He puts himself in front of the team. Playing through pain is one thing. Hiding injury from administration to preserve your playing time is stupid and selfish. And Rizzo and Davey have badly misplayed the situation. This move should have occured 2 months ago. We're talking about a team that was picked as the best in baseball. They were too patient. You don't sacrific e wins at the major league level waotimg for Danny boy to figure it out. The same goes for Henry. My opinion of Davey as manager and Rizzo has reverved on this issue. I'm really pissed at them.
