Game 59: Mets at Nats

Jun 5, 2013, 7:33 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

Can one ninth-inning rally carry over to the next night and create long-term momentum for a struggling ballclub? The Nationals certainly hope so, though you all know the adage by now: Momentum is only as good as your next day's starting pitcher. So the Nats will need Dan Haren to come through with a strong performance tonight against the Mets.

But they'll also hope to string some more hits together, with a lineup that tonight will include Anthony Rendon making his first big-league start (and only ninth career professional start) at second base. All the Steve Lombardozzi fans out there need not worry: Lombo is scheduled to start in left field tonight, so he's not being cast aside to the bench 24 hours after driving in the game-winning run last night.

Meanwhile, Stephen Strasburg and Ross Detwiler are each supposed to throw bullpen sessions this afternoon, after which the Nationals will determine when each injured starter will be ready to return to the mound. So stay tuned for updates there, and right back here for game updates throughout…

How on earth was that 3rd pitch to Duda called a BALL!? IT WAS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ZONE!!!

  2. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:03 AM

    Take Haren out.

  3. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:03 AM

    Yeah GoSM… He is a bum….

  4. Joe Seamhead - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:03 AM

Three fly ball homers. Hey, Nats? Let's hit some fly balls. Deep fly balls.

  5. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:03 AM

So we thought we were going to have five killer starters- now we have JZ and Gio, if he does not get suspended. Plus two call ups and the home run Santa.

  6. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:04 AM

15 homers given up by Haren, seriously?? He looks like he is stoned, I really do not like this clown at all

  7. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:05 AM

And you wonder why we are way behind in the standings? This is not the pitching staff we expected. Get well soon Det and Stras!!!!

  8. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:05 AM

No Mrs B, I wouldn't even say that about Henry. If you have a problem with it, take it up with the GM that spent $13,000,000 on him.

  9. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:06 AM

what pisses me off about Haren is that he knows Det and Stras are out for a while…this is where professionals who CARE and who are GOOD step up for their team, all this clown did tonight was lose a game and steal a pay check

  10. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:06 AM

Haren given away a lot of mo.This is the night the hitters have to be serious. Our pitchers have carried this team.Only once did we actualky get into a slugfest this season and we lost that 7-6 lsst Wednesday, well it up to the hitters now to get as serious as Met hitters have.

  11. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:06 AM

    Is Stammen up?

  12. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:06 AM

get this garbage pitcher out of here, please Davey, I'm begging ya, what a BUM!

  13. paul brandt - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:07 AM

mick, come on, think of all the happy HR catching people that have had the time of their lives and will be back b/c of Haren.

  14. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Oh, this was one move I was totally against…. And still am… Haren has only had 2 good games out of the 10 he has played in…Not worth it…. He is a bum…

  15. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:07 AM

mick, do you think he is trying to suck. He's leaving his pitches up and they are teeing off. Gee has made several mistake pitches and haven't seen any Nats HRs. Bad pitches and credit to the hitters.

  16. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:07 AM

"Haren has only had 2 good games out of the 10 he has played in…"That's simply not true.

  17. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:07 AM

    good point Paul, LOL

  18. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Really, though- plenty of time if we can square it up . Not like that ground ball, of course. If they can hit it hard, it might fly out .

  19. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:08 AM

When we need runners that is a great play.

  20. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Whelp. Bad Haren does not mess around.Weirdly, he doesn't seem to be feeling especially poor tonight. He was moving around the bases better than he usually does.

  21. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:09 AM

Way to beat the shift, Adam!!!!

  22. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:10 AM

Ghost Of Steve M.15 HR's…. I knew Wright was going to homer because everyone in the park could see, Haren's pitches are all high tonight. Nobody tries to suck, but players like Haren so not do the extra preparation to be better…I have said this since April..his preparation is terrible

  23. Joe Seamhead - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:10 AM

Hey! How about ALR reaching on a bunt?

  24. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:10 AM

    Need to bat around,

  25. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:10 AM

They all laughed when I said "Get Bartolo Colon." Or was that when I sat down at the piano?"Marlon Byrd is available," I said. Nobody listens to Old Sofa…

  26. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Please tell me his good games this season… Every game has gotten better… Ie, he sucks less….His Atl game was good and Bmore… What other game????

  27. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:11 AM

after last nights emotional win and the team trying to get on track, this clown pitches one of the worst games I have seen from a pitcher in a awhile he stole his pay check tonight, he owes his team mates an apology and should give his check back to the Lerners

  28. TimDz - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:12 AM

FP keeps saying that the ball is flying out…..If that is the case, why does it only happen during the top of the inning?Maybe it has something to do with our pitcher vs. theirs…not to mention our batters starting out 0-1 just about every time….

  29. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:12 AM

That exact pitch was a ball 2 pitches before. Unbelievable.

  30. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:13 AM

    That wasnt a K….

  31. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:13 AM

take a bong hit Haren, i'm sure you do that on your off days

  32. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:14 AM

If Gee was pitching up we would be teeing up also. He is pitching so that we ground out. You know- the way you avoid the hitters going yard.

  33. Joe Seamhead - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:15 AM

mick, are you sure you're not pulling our leg?

  34. Less Platu - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:15 AM

What's Haren give up, 14 home runs? Gotta lead the MLB or at least close. I like Haren at times, but don't see him getting any better.

  35. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:16 AM

Haren leads the NL in home runs, he's 2nd in MLB.

  36. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:16 AM

    Sigh… Okay..

  37. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:17 AM

  42. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:21 AM

LaRoche gun shy there with the play on that bunt. Thought for sure he was going to 2nd.

  43. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:23 AM

We know absolutely nothing about Haren's prep for his outings, so there's no basis to say he doesn't prepare. Pretty sure he wants to succeed because, in addition to wanting to win in general, he's trying to get a long-term contract for next season. It's a logical fallacy many fans are too prone to, imo – if the results are bad, there's an assumption that it's because they're not trying hard enough or are a bad person somehow. The fault is always will or something mental. 99% of the time, a player who's not doing well is both doing as well as they can *and* not succeeding.

  44. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:24 AM

It really is early enough if we can get to Gee. I would love to see Davis or Kroll . Hey- look! The Mets did not hit any home runs in that inning! Progress!

  45. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:26 AM

Haren's has sucked the enthusiasm out of the crowd. The hitters need to blow the baloons right back up.One lesson Ian hasnt learned umps cannot be depended on to call the pitch correct that ball was way inside, but the Nats dobt get a lot of those. Need to more runners

  46. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:26 AM

This just means we'll have to comeback late again. Return of the Cardiac Nats.

  47. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:26 AM

That should be, the problem is not always will or something mental…

  48. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:28 AM

  50. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:28 AM

We absolutely must get these runs in.

  52. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:29 AM

    Keep the line moving.

  53. BxJaycobb - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Honestly I barely blame Haren. He's simply been ineffective for the last few years, but all of a sudden Rizzo thinks he has outsmarted everyone (as he always thinks he has…i.e. being the only person in western civilization who finds it unnecessary to carry a lefty in the bullpen) and decides Haren's on the brink of a renaissance? Spoiler alert: The dude is done. Anybody who followed him with the Angels and whose eyes were attached to their brains could see it. He may have a nice game here and there, but he's easily (easily) a below average starter in the Major Leagues. It's not that he's worth 13 million dollars. He's barely worth anything. When you know you're going to have injuries to pitching, you simply can't afford to sign a starter principally because he's "reliable and steady" re health and will give you 35 starts a year. This team is not going to make up the ground it needs to with one of their starters being reliably poor game after game. We just don't have the offense for it.

  54. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:31 AM

    That K really sucked.

  55. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:31 AM

  58. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:33 AM

Werth we are not in Potomac any more.2 3 run homers Snday.2 3 run homer opportunity = 2 KLeft 4 in scoring position now.Check swing and called. Is he gun shy tonight.

  59. TimDz - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:35 AM

That was a sad sequence….2nd and 3rd with one out and they can't even push across one run.. .with Haren out, maybe the BP can put some zeros on the board….but you have to chip away…..

  60. paul brandt - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:36 AM

hate to say it but why waste stammen here? bring in one of the young bucks when you are down 5 to 1.

  61. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:36 AM

It takes time to regain timing. It was unrealistic to expect Werth to come back and suddenly be an offensive force. What he immediately brings is a presence to the clubhouse. We've seen that. The bat will take a few days.

  62. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Heron might as well stayed inAs usual we heal slumps Wright awful the lsst 2 weeks

  64. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:38 AM

The White Sox scored 5 runs in the 14th inning in a 0-0 game. Seattle tied in the bottom of the 14th with 5 runs.On to the 15th.

  66. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:40 AM

  67. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Freddy Garcia gives up 4 runs in the 1st inning vs the Astros.Yah, Cy Garcia from last weeks shutout.

  68. PityPolice - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Haren is hot garbage. Not worthy of his contract or a spot in this rotation.

  69. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:42 AM

  70. Section 135 - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Natinals- we don't deserve the O. Zim needs a few days off. He looks so old. Sit Span for a game after that awful at bat. Without Harper Stras and Det we have no chance. Might as well play the kids.

  71. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:43 AM

Uncharacteristic outing from Stammen. Walked 2 already.

  72. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:43 AM

On… Wait… MNF – so you are saying he had 4 good starts instead of 2… Yeah whoop de do… That justifies that he isn't a bum….

  73. Section 135 - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Most boring team ever without Bryce. I think so.

  74. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:44 AM

"Zim needs a few days off. He looks so old. Sit Span for a game after that awful at bat. "Did Zim look so old yesterday in the 9th inning? Span is 2/3. Calm yourself

"This is the night the hitters have to be serious. Our pitchers have carried this team."Post of the thread.

  77. paul brandt - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:45 AM

  78. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:45 AM

I didnt say he wasnt a bum. You said he only 2 good starts I said he had 4. You mixed arguments

  79. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:45 AM

The Phillies are going to be in 2nd place after tonight. That hurts. But we needed to go 5/7 on this homestand. Still very possible.

  80. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:46 AM

    This is terrible…

  81. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:47 AM

Watching the white sox and Seattle now. 0-0until the eleventh. Now 5-5 in the 15 th. our game feels way too much like last weeks O's game. I need to watch a worse train wreck.

  82. Eric - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:47 AM

    A loss wouldn't have surprised me tonight…but a bloodbath wasn't on my radar…damn…

  84. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Okay… So out of 11 games, let me make sure I say he has only had 4 good games instead of 2….Got it…. Regardless of the argument, Haren is still a bum….

  85. SCNatsFan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Went to see the P Nats tonight Ray looked good Taylor looked awful. Come home to see this debacle. What little momentum we get just floats away like a .500 team deserves.

  86. phil dunton - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Nationals will fall to third place in the NL East tonight after the Phillies evened their record at 30-30.

  87. PityPolice - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Haren is not worthy of his contract nor a spot in this rotation. Anything short of a being shelled for 5 to 6 runs is an unlikely over achievement. If I was a fan of an opposing team I would try and make it to one of his starts in person. Hopefully things turn around.

  88. paul brandt - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:51 AM

So Stammen threw like what 40 pitches??? for what reason?! Davey asleep at the switch again…time to watch hockey.

  89. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:52 AM

"So Stammen threw like what 40 pitches??? for what reason?! "Because the game was within reach and Davey was playing to win the game.

  90. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Marty Foster is also clueless. His strike zone is so swful. It is umping like this thay eventually will cause the msjors to go robotic umping at home plate as technology gets betters, the umps must keep up.It is time for our hitters to ger serious and knock in runs. The Mets season wise are as bad as us seem to have no problems.

  91. DJB - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:53 AM

You know, when you have a team this bad, its kind of funny. My pre-2012 Nats are back. Where have you been all this time? Almost didn't recognize you last year. Let's break a record for least runs scored. How about a breaking a record for most games with 2 or less runs? Let's see how many hanging sliders you can miss. Zimmerman, Zimmerman….

  92. paul brandt - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:55 AM

sorry dave, disagree…not with this offense but hope you are right and will give you kudos if you are.

  93. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 12:56 AM

  96. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:00 AM

Gee put everything down…. Haren left everything up…I've never turned a a nats game off or left early regardless how terrible things were going (even in those 100 loss seasons). I will not start tonight…

  97. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:00 AM

Krol coming in too. Going to need another long relief guy tomorrow for Karns, then. Any options? Rosenbaum, maybe?

  98. Rabbit34 - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:00 AM

Haren is maxed out. Time to go to pasture. This team…. inhales. Looks like a fourth place finish this year. Call a spade a spade folks. We can make up all the lame excuses we want to, but in the end it doesn't help. Last year, like the 3-2 win over N.Y. last night, was a fluke. And, you can take that to the bank.

  99. Secret wasian man - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:01 AM

the season is over. this team doesnt have enough talent to be much better than. 500. "this is my last year as manager" and World series or bust comments were a killer. way to RECKIT RIZZO! Be lucky to finish 3rd in the division. 8 games back. just pathetic.

  100. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:01 AM

"Looks like a fourth place finish this year"Look at the Mets record.

  102. Section 135 - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Bad baseball. No grind in this team. That is teachable. Just give up when they get down. Starts with Davey and his confused old man look. Next is Mccatty with his grumpy yet clueless looks and Eck with the confused look on his face.

  103. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:04 AM

"And yet another night we make a nobody look dominant on the mound. Some things don't change."He went 7 1/3 and struck out 13 against the Yankees his last time out. Keep some perspective.

  104. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:05 AM

    we are sooooo bad

  105. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:05 AM

White sox and Seattle to the 16th. Just keeping up with it for fun. It helps the pain. I know this is not the rotation, pen or lineup we hoped for, but I did not expect it to go this poorly. Guess we need not worry about Rendon at second- everything has gone waaay over his head.

  106. Secret wasian man - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:06 AM

Only one guy out tonight due to injury. (danny doesnt count) and we are getting our Butts kicked at home by the METS. Lucked out last night. What a terrible team. Step down tommorow Davey Please. Whos pitching tommorow? Stevie Wonder or Helen Keller?

  107. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:06 AM

Do people always have to say season over when the Nats lose a game? Because there's like 103 more of these things, you guys.

  108. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:06 AM

even if Hare was not a worthless sack of you know what, the bottom of 5th was pathetic, Werth should have stayed on DL…good teams get those 2 runs in… we are simply pathetic

  109. Secret wasian man - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:07 AM

    Walter Mathua for Manager.

  110. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:08 AM

Werth has to readjust to big league pitching. It takes a few days. If you thought Werth coming back would suddenly change everything, you set yourself up for disappointment. Doesn't work that way. These things take time.

  111. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:10 AM

If Krol can develop a changeup, look out.

  112. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:10 AM

Krol just struck out the side!

  113. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:10 AM

I forgot, Harvey is itching tonight…that is why Werth looks at 3rd strike and Span strikes out…ooops I forgot it is a crappy 3-6 pitcher who looks like Harvey verse the Nats, just like every pitcher looks like Harvey verse us. Davey said this morning if you fire Eck, fire me….what the hell is rizzo waiting for

Now the guys need to score at least one for pride. But i am telling you that if we come back and win this one I am dancing naked in the streets.

  121. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:14 AM

swami…that is too much information, lol

Can we just can the post season talk right now?

  124. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:16 AM

Secret wasian man said…Emdash. Anybody who looks at this team can see there is no hope for post season. For those that do may I recommend cutting the trips to happy hour down to twice a week. POTD you are spot on, what a bust of team and a season

  125. Secret wasian man - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:16 AM

Folks here complain about LODers and trolls. I would like to complain about all the people who say, "theres time" and "Its Early." NO IS NOT!!! Wake up people

  126. Scott Margenau - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:17 AM

    Just missed

  127. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:17 AM

I'm not saying we're likely to make the postseason or we're not. We're not out of it. Until we're mathematically eliminated, I'm not giving up. If you want to dwell, feel free.

  128. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:19 AM

David… we should place bets now on the elimination date, I say August 20

  129. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:19 AM

    Agree David P…

  130. Secret wasian man - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:21 AM

No its not over. I mean "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" NO but last year I always expected a win. this year not the case.

  131. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:21 AM

My bet on elimination date is November 1st. That's the day after we win the World Series.

  132. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:22 AM

and I bet… Davey leaves before the end of the season too. I also think the Lerners will show the door to the bald headed stooge of a GM, lol

  133. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:22 AM

Davis really does look like Clip… Lol… Kinda funny

  134. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:23 AM

White Sox win in the 16th 7-5

  135. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:23 AM

Hoping hurts nothing. They're scuffling now, and all that's in my control is my decision to hope they do better.Haren was a reasonable gamble given his strong history and the 1 year deal. I didn't agree with it, but the thought process was sound. The gamble hasn't worked out that well, but it wasn't an unreasonable choice. That's the story of this season; every reasonable gamble hasn't worked out.

  136. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:24 AM

Freddy Garcia pulled after 3 innings and 6 earned runs.

  137. Secret wasian man - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:24 AM

    Elimination time???? 3 innings ago

  138. SCNatsFan - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:24 AM

They had Davis and Clip on split screen last night it was freaky

  139. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:25 AM

No its not over. I mean "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" NO but last year I always expected a win. this year not the case.was it over when the Titanic hit the iceberg, oops, actually it was, lol to coin a line from Stephen Colbert… don't look at the Nats as sinking, they are soaring like the Hidenburg, lol

  140. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:26 AM

I hope Clip and Storen take in Davis as a roomie. Davis has that straight leg follow thru like Storen but looks like Clip's twin.

  141. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:28 AM

And for the record, Drew's Mom says they never roomed together. Jhonny Holiday sure does care about where people are from. Tired of him. I love watching new guys. It's very 2010.

  142. slidell2 - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Actually folks, it was the Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor.

  143. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:28 AM

I feel bad for Davey as he looks bewildered… hey Haren pass Davey your bong, lol

  144. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:29 AM

Slidell – the quote comes from Animal House….

  146. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:31 AM

if Nats do not win with Gio, tomorrow, both the Twins and Rockies will send the Nats back to their 2007 level.. I smell a 7-8 game losing streak coming which will for all intents and purposes will end any post season hope for 2013

  147. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:33 AM

it is so sickening to see the fans come out and show support, Nats fans have proven DC is a baseball town (not that we ever had too). Nats are top 5-6 in attendance. If i was the owner, i would be livid with Davey and the Stooge

  148. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:34 AM

"it is so sickening to see the fans come out and show support"Yeah how awful. I'm sure the players truly hate it.

  149. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:36 AM

David Proctor said…"it is so sickening to see the fans come out and show support"Yeah how awful. I'm sure the players truly hatehow do you draw that conclusion? It is sickening for the Lerners and fans who have emotionally invested a great deal in this team…these players should be ashamed of themselves, especialy Haren who is garbage

  150. phil dunton - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:37 AM

Freddy Garcia, who pitched like Roger Clemens in his prime against the Nationals last week, was knocked out after three innings against the weak hitting Astros.

  151. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:37 AM

I hope Davey puts in Solano to catch the rest of the game.

  152. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:38 AM

in fact, the players should be embarrassed at the support they get from the fans and the poor half ass effort they have shown… this is unacceptable and they deserve all the flack they are about to get

  153. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:38 AM

"It is sickening for the Lerners and fans who have emotionally invested a great deal in this team…these players should be ashamed of themselves, especialy Haren who is garbage"Why? Do you think they're not trying? Too many people on here seem to think that the players don't care, aren't trying, or have some character flaw that makes them awful people and awful players. They're underperforming, it happens. Do you think you start hitting better by being ashamed of it? You're wrong if you do.

  154. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:40 AM

Phil D… I was just on the phone talking to my dad about the game and switched over to see the other game and told my dad that…. He did one of those heavy sighs and said 'Not surprised'

  155. ehay2k - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:41 AM

Not our best effort tonight. Haren wasn't sharp, and the defense hasn't been either. The rookie pitchers are the only reason to smile. Oh, and ALR's bunt. That made me happy.Lastly, we stink with RISP. I'm sure it's not Eck, but somehow, I think the players do not have a proper plan at the plate. That needs to be adjusted.

  156. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:41 AM

We are the cure for all who slump. Sometimes I think this season is a bad dream. We thought the curse lifted last night, but it was just a tease.. Seriously, how you can completely absolve the hitting coach is beyond me.would love to see any offense right now. Anything at all. It won't always be this bad.

  157. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:41 AM

I assume we will everygame. I hate when they lose, but never ever will you hear me say it is over. If you think it is over, then let it be over and move on.In the meantime I planning to win this still and win tomorrow.First move is to get some to coach hitting.Gee almost 6 ERA coming into tonight. Our hitters need a coach.

Ghost Of Steve M. said… Sorry, 3-0 where you have the pitcher breathing hard and you have the new callup swing?Bad idea although nice wood on it but unlucky BABIP. June 05, 2013 7:30 PM This is looking larger in the whole picture as the Nats had Gee on a 1st inning pitch count in the 20s and only scored 1 and left 2 on.

  160. phil dunton - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:45 AM

The Lerners did not choose to extend Rizzo's contract beyond the 2014 option season. They may eventually offer him a new contract but that's unlikely if the Nationals continue to sink. The minor league cupboard is pretty bare and the current roster certain doesn't offer much hope. If Rizzo departs, I certainly hope he takes his adopted son, Eckstein, with him.

  161. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:45 AM

David… fair enough as far as most of the players go… in that case then, they simply are not very good and then one should lay off them and our wrath should be on Rizzo and Davey for hyping them up as a WS contenderI disagree with you on Haren.. I think he is lazy period and his first 3 starts should prove that in terms of his lack of preparation for those games. He looks like he could care lessthat is my view

  162. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Nats will not finish last place, but they will be battling Mets and Phillies for 4ththat is reality gang

  163. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:48 AM

We do have 9 hits tonight. We failed to come up big with RISP, which sucks, but isn't a particularly good indicator of future success. Especially given that Werth is 1 day off the DL and he was the guy up in many of those situations. More times than not, he will knock those runs in. He's just rusty.

  164. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:49 AM

Yeah GoSM…. I'm not sure who gave Rendon the to ahead… Whether it was McCatty or DJ but I didnt like that at all….

  165. mick - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:50 AM

David, unfortunately there is nothing in these 59 games that is particularly good indicator of future successlol

  166. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:51 AM

Baltimore is losing 9-1 to the Astros. This game is so humbling. I love baseball. I know they are trying and confounded. I will watch just to see what happens next. I do think a hitting coach MUST beat some responsibility. I also think if things don't get better in the second half– and I think they will– Davey will step aside early so that the new manager can have the same advantage he had.

  167. Dan Strong - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:53 AM

The nats have to be leading the league in at least one stat… Blowouts….against.

  168. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:53 AM

Well Abad has been a pleasant surprise. Can we at least agree on that?

  169. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:55 AM

And I have to confess that when the season started I would have had a hard time figuring out who Abad, Davis, Krol, Karns and Whoever is coming next- Ohlendorf?? were. Come on guys – this is who is pitching for us now.

  170. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:56 AM

So who are we drafting tomorrow??

  171. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:56 AM

Well, let's face it. The Span deal flopped and the Haren deal flopped as well. I like them both personally, but we already have tons of .250-type hitters with no power. Span contributes very little to the offense with his 3.20ish obp and zero power. He is not a base stealer and while his fielding is decent, that really wasn't an issue last year. They said putting him in center would take the pressure off Harper in the outfield. What a joke. Harper got hurt because they were moving him around all the time instead of leaving him in center to learn the position and the fields in the NL.You could pitch any guy from the minors and get better results than you get from Haren. The only issue with Haren is his variability sucks you in. He seems better but he isn't. Either Lannan or Jackson would have been better.Beyond those deals, this team has suddenly become almost unwatchable. This isn't football. You have to keep some guys healthy. As soon as they get behind by more than one run, you know the game is over. I have never seen a team with so many players like Tyler Moore who simply have no idea what they are even doing at the plate. How is he not back in the minors? He can't field, run, or hit. It is getting hard not to feel that we lucked into last year.

  172. Dan Strong - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:56 AM

I'll give this to them… When they lose, they lose big.

  173. SCNatsFan - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:58 AM

All Haren had to do was pitch a shutout and we'd be in this game. Like most nights when you give up the second run it is over. But tomorrow is another day.

  174. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:59 AM

Nice to see Rendon check in with a double.

  175. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:59 AM

Finally something to get excited about! Rendon!

  176. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 1:59 AM

    Way to go, kid!!!

  177. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:00 AM

Good job, lefty bullpen guys. The lesson of this game is that tinkering with the roster on the edges can't create immediate results. Nothing's going to quickly Change Everything. Health, and more players performing to their career levels, are what will help. There's no magic bullet. Only thing for it is patience and hoping for the best.

  178. DJB - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Mick, primary responsibility lies with our huckster GM. He should have been fired for sitting Stras last year. If Stras can't stay healthy, you might as well take your chance when the ring is on the line. Anyway, its kind of fun in a weird way to watch all this horribleness. I think I am over the burden of high expectations.

  179. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:03 AM

On one hand, it seems like we are hitting on pitchers…. But on the other, we aren't scoring runs….I'm wondering if that is on Eck…

  180. NatsLady - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:04 AM

Boy, when you watch Lombo swing after watching Rendon–what a difference.

  181. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:06 AM

I love it when Jhonny Holiday tells us that the Mets pen is the worst in baseball. FP has quit talking. In shock.

  182. SCNatsFan - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:06 AM

If Davey's comments showed anything then Eck isn't going anywhere

  183. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:08 AM

I am aware. But it just seems to make no sense. It is so obviously not working — at all.

  184. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:08 AM

Still like the Span deal. He's changed his hitting approach over the last month to be more aggressive, I'd expect at the coaches' direction, and it's not working. Hopefully they'll realize that soon and he can go back to playing his game. He'll start getting on base better once that happens.

  185. NatsLady - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:09 AM

Wow, how would you like to blow a 5-run lead in the 14th inning with your closer in? (Oh, and still win the game.)

  186. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:10 AM

The roster didn't need any tinkering. Rizzo should have left everything the way it was and either sign La Roche or not. Obviously, we needed a left reliever and in Rizzo's defense, Christian Garcia apparently is a phantom pitcher who is often touted and yet seldom seen. The Gio and Suzuki deals were both good, but I am afraid the success of those deal may have led to hubris. I see nothing in the past portfolio of Denard Span that indicates that he is anything but an okay player. At least he isn't BJ Upton, I guess at $75 million. This team needed another big bat like Morse's, not another Lombardozzi typy player in Span. That deal, together with letting Morse go was a big, big mistake.

  187. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:11 AM

We just need 9 to tie. Don't give up until the 27th out.

  188. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:11 AM

    Abad has very impressive.

  189. EmDash - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:12 AM

Minor lat injury that any pitcher can get does not equal can't stay healthy.

  190. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:12 AM

Morse is on pace to allow the most runs since the stat started being kept. The record is 45. He's on pace for over 60. That's how bad his defense is. If you think defense doesn't matter, you don't understand baseball.

  191. NatsLady - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:14 AM

Very. I don't think he has given up a run, has he?Kobernus is a skinny noodle. Didn't realize that.

  192. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:15 AM

This is like watching a game at Harrisburg or Syracuse. Might as well bring up a few more. Can't go any worse. I like Abad! And Kobernus is on base. Rally time!!

  193. Bob Saget Nats Fan 101 - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:16 AM

question for everyone. I want to go to Fridays game with my family. We want to get tickets on stubhub. With the forecast for Friday being rain, what is the nationals current policy on rainout games? Any links would help.I ask because I could buy good tickets for cheap and exchange them for a later game if the nats do that.

  194. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:16 AM

The NL East is suddenly the NL Least. The Braves are not that good. This could be a year where 88 wins gets you the division crown. I agree that the wild card seems a long shot.Nevertheless, the dirty little secret of MLB is that regular season records don't matter in the play-offs, particularly if you have pitching. Just ask the 82-79 Mets who came within a whisper of beating the eventual 3 time champs A's back in 1973. I remember the 83-79 Cards winning the World Series, as well as a Twins team that was actually outscored during the regular season in 1987.

  195. David Proctor - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:16 AM

Jeez, Span has been robbed twice tonight.

  196. baseballswami - Jun 6, 2013 at 2:16 AM
