Any rumors on whether the 3rd rounder will sign?

  2. Andrew - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:05 PM

    I am #1

  3. Andrew - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:05 PM

    ooops, #2

  4. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Small draft pool of money TexNat.

  5. DaveB - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:07 PM

TexNat … word is that he was originally slated to be in the 2014 draft, but graduated early and applied for this draft … sounds to me like he wants to get to MLB as soon as possible.

  6. NatsLady - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Washington Nationals Round 4 Pick #136 -> Nic Pivetta New Mexico JCA Canadian pitcher with a huge pitcher’s frame and even bigger fastball, Pivetta has a promising junior college arm that does not have much wear on a lightly used arm. His fastball and curve combination portends a career as a reliever, but the Nats will let him develop as a starter and see if he can develop a good changeup. Interesting pick with some upside here at the end of Round 4.

  7. David Proctor - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:11 PM

It's all about value in these rounds. Guys with upside. I think we've chosen some guys with a lot of upside. Whether they ever develop into anything, nobody knows.

  8. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:13 PM

Caps Fan said… Zuckerman just tweeted that Zimmerman will start the 1:35 game on Sunday, Karns starts the 7:05. Would seem to leave the starter for Wed in Colorado up in the air. Maybe if NatsJack hasn't headed out yet for the early bird dinner at Del Boca Vista he could enlighten us as to how this rainout today has provided a reset. Beats me.This post sounds eerily familiar to a departed poster.Rizzo and Davey must have some surprise up their sleeves for the Wednesday starter. My guess right now is that they wait to see how Detwiler does tomorrow and then rethink the Sunday situation.

  9. Section 222 - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:16 PM

He hasn't departed Ghost, just changed his stripes. Again.

You are living in Del Boca Vista after all. May 25, 2013 12:10 PM Now we know Dominats is now Caps Fan. Who was Dominats prior to that?I bet Section 222 has a good idea.

  15. Nats 128 - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:33 PM

I read these picks and someone could certainly turn into something good with a mechanicle overhaul. The thing is it rarely happens. The Nats couldnt even fix Henry Rodriguez or Danny Espinosa after 2+ years. Johnansen and some of these others are projects. They are like teardowns to rebuild. I hope it works as the future depends on it.

  16. David Proctor - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:33 PM

You're not going to get a finished product where the Nats are picking. It just doesn't really happen very much.

  18. JD - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:40 PM

Ghost, Det hasn't pitched in about a month. I don't see how he fits in the plans for the very near future like Wednesday. So if we do: Sat – Gio Sun – JZim,Karns Tue – Haren Thu – Gio I still think we need Ohlendorf on Wednesday. The other approach would be to pitch Ohlendorf on Sunday night because you are allowed to bring someone up for a 2nd game of a double header. In that case Karns can pitch on Wednesday and we don't need a 5th starter until a week from Saturday.

  19. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:40 PM

You're not going to get a finished product where the Nats are picking. It just doesn't really happen very much.Well, there's a reason they call it the amateur draft.

  20. Section 222 - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:42 PM

I'm a little surprised that Rizzo didn't take advantage of the free 26th man for a DH rule to avoid having to make a move if he needs Ohlendorf or someone else to make a spot start before Det returns. He must have something up his sleeve. Planning on Stammen?Right now it sounds like we have:Sat. vs. MIN — GioSun. vs. MIN 1 — JZnnSun. 2 — KarnsMon — OffTues in COL — HarenWed. in COL — ??Thurs. in COL — Gio/Det?Friday in CLE — JZnn/Det?Sat. in CLE — Karns/Det?Sun. in CLE — Haren/Det?Mon. vs. PHI — ???If Det can slot back in between Thurs. and the following Monday, we're fine after Wednesday, but if he has a setback we don't have another off day until June 24. We'll need Wed's starter or someone else to go next Monday too. Is Yunesky Maya still available? j/k

  21. Caps Fan - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:43 PM

"The other approach would be to pitch Ohlendorf on Sunday night because you are allowed to bring someone up for a 2nd game of a double header. In that case Karns can pitch on Wednesday and we don't need a 5th starter until a week from Saturday."Zuckerman's tweet would indicate they've already decided against that. Perhaps they don't want Karns to get scarred for life by pitching in Colorado. That has destroyed many a pitcher.

  22. baseballswami - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:44 PM

Haren and Ohlendorf in Colorado – oh, goody. That should be fun. Hope the Nats remember to bring their bats.

  23. Section 222 - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:44 PM

JD, sounds like we were thinking along the same lines, but I think we'd have Karns ready for Sat. and Haren for Sunday. So the next slot for the spot starter would be Monday.

  24. Caps Fan - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Speaking of Maya: Aroldis Chapman, Yasiel Puig and Yeonis Cespedes are all Cubans, and they all were immediate hits in MLB and have never let up. Well, except for Puig who hasn't had enough time yet to let up even if he wanted to. So are we sure Maya isn't one of those Cubans that Kramer was hiding in a dresser drawer? Maybe NatsJack down in Del Boca Vista would know.

  25. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:49 PM

He must have something up his sleeve. He's trading Detwiler, Eury Perez, Anthony Rendon, and Drew LaRoche for Bartolo Colon.

  26. Caps Fan - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:50 PM

"Well, there's a reason they call it the amateur draft."Actually they don't. They call it the First Year Player Draft. Didn't you hear Bud Selig intone that umpteen million times last night, or did the first one put you to sleep?

  27. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:53 PM

    *Drake.Drake LaRoche.

  28. PDowdy83 - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:56 PM

Section 222, according to Mark's post yesterday Det is supposed to go to Potomac tomorrow so your Thursday theory could work out. The reason they may not want to do anything with the 26th spot for the DH is due to still having to open a roster spot for Ohlendorf. If they avoid using him they don't have to make a move. The team acquired Tyler Robertson from the twins today and that makes the 40 man roster full again.

  29. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:57 PM

"Well, there's a reason they call it the amateur draft."Actually they don't. They call it the First Year Player Draft. Didn't you hear Bud Selig intone that umpteen million times last night, or did the first one put you to sleep?Well, that is its proper name, hence the lack of capitalization in "amateur draft," which is what lots of folks call the Rule 4 Draft. Which is not must-see TV for me.

  30. sjm308 - Jun 7, 2013 at 7:59 PM

Well, well, we have the snarkiness back at Nats Insider. Just another burden to bear in this difficult season. At the gym today a gentleman who does have a minimal involvement with the team made an excellent point. Worrying about what the 24th and 25th men on this roster do, and making those changes, will not get us to the playoffs. His point was we need Strasburg, Harper, Detwiler, Ramos and hopefullly Espinosa all to 1. recover and 2. play like they are capable. That will make talk about Tracy & Bernadina and who our backup shortstop are significant but right now we are wounded and not playing with a full deck. Strange having the same hat on for 3 days and not getting a win with it.MicheleS – will you be at Justin's tomorrow??Go Nats!!

  31. Section 222 - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:03 PM

PD83, right. Unless they want Det to start on short rest, which seems highly unlikely, the earliest he could start for the Nats is Thursday. But if he can go then or any of the three following days, we're back to a five man rotation (with Karns taking Stras's spot for the time being) and no further spot starter is needed. If it's true that Robertson has occupied the last spot on the 40 man, you could very well be right that that's why they didn't want to bring up the brainiac RossO. But that leaves open the question of who starts on Wednesday. Maybe Stammen and hope he can go 5?

  32. Mintwood Nat - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:04 PM

The trick is to have a good GM, scouts, development system and ownership. Nats have all of those. Oh, yes. Things can go terribly wrong. But keep in mind that Adam Laroche, for example, was drafted in the 29th round.

  33. Dave - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:04 PM

I find that it's helpful if I can figure out early which posts to scroll past, by screen name. Very helpful indeed.

sjm, I'll be at the game tomorrow, and probably in your section. If you're friend said we need Espi back and producing this year in order to get to the playoffs, I'm afraid this season is lost.

  36. PDowdy83 - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:06 PM

222, a lot of times teams put in waiver claims and never even use the guy so it is possible that they have Robertson and Cedeno right now but one of them could be cut loose Wednesday to make room for Ohlendorf. As you mentioned, I wouldn't be shocked if the start goes to Stammen. Davey mentioned awhile back he was an option in a spot start. Sinkerballer in Coors sounds better than Ohlendorf or Karns there for sure.

  37. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:12 PM

Mintwood, indeed, it might be encouraging to recall Mike Piazza, for example, was drafted in the 62nd round, with pick No. 1,390.

  38. Caps Fan - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:19 PM

An awful lot of humor-impaired folks around these premises. Y'all been sucking on lemons or sucking on limes? If it's limes, y'all really oughta be sticking them in a Corona instead. Also a lot of folks here who can dish it out but who can't take it. Y'all know who you are.

  42. Just wonderin' - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:43 PM

Anyone want to read any significance into picking 2 third-basemen in their first 5 picks?

  43. DaveB - Jun 7, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Just wonderin … Not I. One of them was a 17-yr old, so probably at least 5 years away from anything. The other has been going back / forth between relief pitcher & 3B, so not locked into any position yet. I think for position players they really do just go for best available athlete.

  44. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 7, 2013 at 9:14 PM

The thing to point out is 2 potential lefthanded power bats in the future.

I think the afternoon game is on MASN 2, so you'll have to change channels to watch both ends of the twin bill. (Insert obligatory joke that Orioles fans would never figure out how to do that here.)
