Instant analysis: Nats 5, Rockies 4

Jun 13, 2013, 10:18 PM EDT

Associated Press
Ross Detwiler allowed three runs over five innings in his return from the DL.

Game in a nutshell: In the rubber game of the first series of a long road trip, the Nationals found themselves needing to rally from behind to beat a tough Rockies club. Ryan Zimmerman gave them an early 2-1 lead on his 10th homer of the season, but Colorado came right back to take a 3-2 lead off the just-reinstated Ross Detwiler. Still trailing in the seventh, the Nationals "rallied" to tie the game thanks to back-to-back balks called on reliever Wilton Lopez (who was subsequently ejected). They then took the lead in more conventional fashion, getting back-to-back doubles from Roger Bernadina and Zimmerman, then an RBI single from the red-hot Ian Desmond (who went 4-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games). Solid relief work from Craig Stammen, Xavier Cedeno and Drew Storen bridged the gap to Rafael Soriano, who did allow one run to score in the ninth before sealing his 17th save. Thus the Nationals head to Cleveland with a series victory, a winning record (33-32) and a deficit in the NL East that has now been trimmed to 5 1/2 games.

Hitting highlight: Obviously, Zimmerman's two-run homer and RBI double played crucial roles in today's win, but let's not ignoreRead more »

GOSM – I was just saying how I know DJ is glad to have some lefties in the BP so he can go along with situational defense…It was hard before with just Z Duke….DJ managed this one well…

Not bad. Let's keep at it.

Key stat: Since Wilson Ramos went back on the DL May 16, Kurt Suzuki is hitting .192 with a .234 on-base percentage and a .219 slugging percentage.7 runners left on base today by Suzuki. Werth is scuffling also and LaRoche is no longer going oppo on those outside pitches. Luckily enough of the others were hitting today.

  6. NatsLady - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Hmmmmm… Pirates down two starting pitchers (Wandy and now A.J. Burnett). Nothing is easy.

Also want to thank Balking Bob for doing what he does best!

  8. terpman33 - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:25 PM

That's how it should be done. A spark becomes a flame, a flame becomes a fire, and that fire turns into a raging inferno. Before we know it, the Nats will have a 10 game winning streak(maybe), and we'll all wonder what we were worried about. Lets show the AL what winning baseball is all about. GYFNG, BABY!!!

  9. Eric - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Burnett is down? That's gonna leave a mark…or unearth an Ohlendorf… ;)Today we came back not once but twice. Nice!

  10. David Proctor - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:26 PM

There were some on here who said we would be swept by both the Twins and Rockies and be 10 games under .500. Well we've 2/3 against both. Just keep winning 2/3 and all will be well.

  11. NatsLady - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:27 PM

This game feels like last year in Toronto where one pitcher after another got hurt.

  12. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:27 PM

I still hope we go at least 6-3 on this series… Although I hope we sweep Cleveland and win the series against the Philth…. But I will take it 1 game at a time….Good going Nats! 2 series in a row…

"7 runners left on base today by Suzuki. Werth is scuffling also and LaRoche is no longer going oppo on those outside pitches. "Werth had an off series, but he was scorching hot against the Twins. We'll see how he does against Cleveland.

  16. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:30 PM

I love how the offense came from behind and picked up Jayson from that error.Hope Bernadina is ok because I think Werth needs a day off sooner than later as does Span, LaRoche and Suzuki.

Exciting game. Atlanta isn't shaking in their boots yet, but they will be soon. We're just getting healthy Get Harper and Stras back, get Zimmerman to quit lolly gagging, make sure Davey takes his Alzheimer's meds, etc. and we'll be okay.

  18. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Jason needs to come out the clean up spot… He is looking at too many Ks…. I know, though, that this will happen when Harper comes back…

  19. NatsLady - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:34 PM

They are slowing learning to cope without Bryce. If he comes back healthy it will be a huge boost.

  20. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:35 PM

Here's what I like, Davey has 21 of his A team guys right now and he will get 3 back sooner or later from injury. With a good bullpen, Davey can actually manage like last year.

I couldn't be a reporter, although I would love to be one… I'd be too distracted in the locker room(s) and pissed off if my team loses… I'd be asking al the wrong questions….

  25. David Proctor - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:45 PM

We have Gio, JZimm and Stras going in Cleveland. No reason to not win 2/3.

  26. DaveBinMD - Jun 13, 2013 at 10:49 PM

With Ramos having re-aggravated the Hamstring yet again, and Kurt ice cold at the plate, how about a few more starts for 'Onion'? I know his bat had been cold all season too, but he's hit in the past and he stroked a double yesterday, so maybe he'll heat-up with more starts.

"Since when does the DC area get tornados."We get little ones here pretty regularly, but usually on the east side of the city. MoCo is pretty rare (although I was a few hundred yards from one back in '01 in the same area that got hit today).

Per Wikipedia:"The surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland average 10 and 6 tornadoes per year."I don't know how many of those are in the metro area, but it seems we get at least one confirmed touch down per year. There's a strip of forest that was completely uprooted on the north side of the UMD campus during the '01 event. Now it's basically just a swamp. That was the event where one touched down a few hundred yards from a friend's house while I was there. That was pretty scary, but the derecho last summer was worse.

  72. baseballswami - Jun 13, 2013 at 11:46 PM

How are you watching the game?? Please keep us updated. I see all these guys as numbers 26,26,27,28 etc on the roster. We could need any of them any day. You know of course, that there are people seriously worried about a backup SS. They are all an important part of the Nats– that much has been proven last year and this year. They can keep us afloat or sink us

Syracuse realistically has maybe 4 guys who may help the Nats and 2 of those are Espinosa and Moore and the other 2 are Perez and Brown. Everybody else are organizational fillers.Rosenbaum may get a look but I doubt it.Guys like Walters and Rivero have too many holes in their game both offensively and defensively.Rosenbaum is getting hit around in the 2nd.

haha as I predicted: Mike Carp goes deep, right center field.changeup down the middle: Good Bye!

  126. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:15 AM

    Nava smokes a rope to second.Gausman will never last 6 innings.After three and a half: O's 3 Sox 2

  127. NatsLady - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:16 AM

Adam Warren just gave up a single and a walk. Figured I would let you know since I'm sure you have as much interest in my fantasy team as in the O's.

Gonat said… NatsJack in Florida said… Danny Espinosa strikes out looking with bases loaded. June 13, 2013 8:05 PM _______________________________ Some things never change. That's not true. Usually he strikes out swinging with the bases loaded.

  129. Eric - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:18 AM

Well, I suppose this is how negativity manifests around here when things are going well for the Nats: an Os play by play…

  130. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:18 AM

I probably am more interested in anyone's fantasy selections than the o's — but tonight, its the only game in town

  131. Gonat - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Less Platu, why don't you go to the Birdland blog. They will appreciate your Bird play by play. This is a Nats blog and even the people with dual allegiance are good enough not to talk Os here.Have some respect.

  132. David Proctor - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:19 AM

WOW that play at the plate robbing the A's of a walk off.

  133. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Now I see where Espi got the idea for his beard: Pedroia sports a beard similar

  134. NatsLady - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Coco Crisp (PH) singles, Brandon Moss out at home but the catcher (Stewart) is dazed in the collision. He stays in the game.

  135. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Maybe Espi will find is level of hitting mastery in Single A

  136. Mickey Vernon - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:22 AM

I'd watch the O's but their broadcasters are mind numbingly boring and relentless homers — but I suppose that's what their fan base expect. Right, Less?

  137. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:22 AM

Sorry to break in on the Orioles coverage here on Nats Insider but we have won two series in a row and did not lose the Mets Series as it ended 1-1.With the 3 starters scheduled for Cleveland I am thinking we can win our 3rd series in a row and slowly but surely pick up ground on the Braves. Not what I had in mind at the beginning of the year but it is a new and exciting way to look at the year. We can be the little engine that could and slowly but surely move to the top of the mountain so all the good little girls and boys can get their just rewards.Go Nats!!!

  138. NatsLady - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:22 AM

Warren, who is on FUMES, strikes out Rosales, and we go to the 16th.

  139. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:23 AM

Valencia doubles off the outstretched glove of the running and diving Ellsbury. Would have been a helluva catch

  140. Eric - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:24 AM

"Sorry to break in on the Orioles coverage here on Nats Insider"As you should be!!!

  141. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:24 AM

Carp and F.P. aren't shameless Homers??? haha

  142. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:24 AM

I also try not to watch the O's but the epitome of "homerism" is when the chose the Player Of The Game and it is always an Oriole no matter what the score or situation. What a joke. I do like their lineup however and am glad we don't face them again the rest of the year.

  143. Eric - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:25 AM

Sheesh now it's dueling coverage… I guess I'll dip. No offense but atbat is way better at this than y'all ;)

  144. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:25 AM

sjm its not a new way to view the season; its the only way

  145. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:26 AM

    Amen Eric!!

  146. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:27 AM

It's called loyal fans, Sjm. Any different from here?

  147. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:27 AM

By the way, how is Mick's prediction of 10 losses in a row working out?? Oh, not so well I guess. I skip him now but I am guessing he is back rooting for his team now that they are winning.

  148. baseballswami - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:27 AM

Bernie appeared to hurt his shoulder today. I am interested in any player that wears a uniform of the Nationals organization and I am interested in some former Nats who I was fond of and wish well. I am not interested in the american league team to our north — I am sure that they have a discussion blog during games. I will link to the gameday – did not know they did it for the minor leagues. I may also invest in the minor league computer games. I love following the kids.

  149. Candide - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:27 AM

Less Platu said… I probably am more interested in anyone's fantasy selections than the o's In that case, why don't you read Robert Coover's The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop.?

  150. NatsLady - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:28 AM

Well, I tried to drown out the O's coverage… Gotta leave for a while. Enjoy!

  151. Gonat - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:28 AM

I just tweeted Mark about this Troll. You ask the guy nicely to stop his play by play and he doesn't care.

  152. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:30 AM

Platu – it now is the only way, but like others, I really bought into the hype at the beginning of the year about how great we would be and had to do a major expectation adjustment. I have waited 68 years for a World Series in this town and was hoping this would be the year. Have not given up but it was pretty bleak there for a couple weeks.Rendon, the bullpen additions and a couple of our regulars getting on track have slowly but surely made me think we still have a chance.Again, Go Nats! Win 2 of 3 from the tribe

  153. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Swami or Natsjack – I get the audio mlb gameday for some ridiculously cheap price per month. Are you guys saying I can also find minor league games? If so, how?

  154. baseballswami - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Do tell – I am interested also. I love minor league baseball.

  155. Gonat - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Espinosa is batting .500 in the Minors. Bring him back. He does have a high K rate which is also .500.

  156. Eric - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:36 AM

sjm – Maybe start at milb.com?

  157. baseballswami - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Tyler is batting 1000 with 4 rbi's — call him back!

  158. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:39 AM

39.99 for the entire season gets you all AAA, AA and most A games. MiLB.com.

  159. baseballswami - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:39 AM

NatsJack – is the Austin Jackson playing for Toledo the big league Austin Jackson?

  160. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Tyler is hitting .200 with 5 rbi on 1 hit and 2 sac flies.

  161. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:43 AM

    Yes.

  162. Candide - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:43 AM

sjm, it looks like there isn't any radio broadcast of the minor league games (http://www.milb.com/multimedia/audio.jsp?sid=t552&home=t552&away=t512), but you can follow Syracuse's play-by-play here: http://www.milb.com/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2013_06_13_tolaaa_syraaa_1&mode=gamedayKinda like At Bat Lite.

  163. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Except now he's the AAA Austin Jackson.

  164. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:45 AM

As always NatsJack – thanksWe met briefly before a game a year ago. Would love to spend more time the next time you come up. We have beer and music and beer and baseball in common, not to mention beer. I am just a few years older and am jealous of your tatoo even though someone else on here thinks its a sign of …. well, never mind.Go Nats!!

  165. Candide - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:45 AM

And it looks like Espi's been taken out of the game – replaced at 2nd by Brian Bocock.

  166. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:46 AM

If you get the MiLB package it includes radio feeds as well.

  167. sjm308 - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:46 AM

They said he would only play 3 innings in his first game. I really do hope they take their time with this. I for one do not need to see him rushed back. They need to send him a message here (in my opinion).

  168. Less Platu - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:47 AM

Gonad: why go personal? why the insults? People are having fun – play by play on the chiefs, the A's and a little O's. Im a nats fan. I think that's clear. Yet you're calling me a Troll? Reporting me to Mark? How old are you, 12, 13?If you're an adult, calm downIf you a teenager: shut up and let the adults talk

  169. Gonat - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:49 AM

5 people asked you to stop the Os play by play. You just ignored them.

  176. Drew - Jun 14, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Meanwhile, away from the sandbox …Taylor Jordan just allowed his first hit in the sixth inning against Richmond. The hit came on a grounder to third. On the radio you could hear the Harrisburg crowd booing the official scorer.Jordan plunked the first batter of the game, then retired 15 in a row. Jordan's only problem is that he sat awhile between innings. Harrisburg is up 9-0.Looks like this kid's on the fast track.

Since you want to talk about them, why don't you go find a fan board of theirs and discuss the game….I'm glad for Tyler Moore… I always figured he would be the guy to take over for Adam LaRoche….

Six innings into his sixth start at Harrisburg, Taylor Jordan has a 0.71 ERA at AA and he's about to go 5-0.Earlier this year he was 2-1 at Potomac with a 1.24 ERA when he was promoted. Tonight's performance should drop his cumulative ERA below 1.00.Jordan was a 9th round pick in 2009 out of Brevard CC in Florida. He was 9-4 at Hagerstown when he lost a year to Tommy John surgery.I would guess they'll have him finish this year at Harrisburg. His recovery, after those of JZim and Stras, gives me hope that Slingin' Sammy Solis will return to form.
