Game 70: Nats at Phillies

Jun 18, 2013, 7:32 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

PHILADELPHIA — As you can tell from the above photo, it's raining here at Citizens Bank Park. It's been raining all afternoon. And there's no real letup in sight. Which seems to suggest the odds of baseball being played tonight are slim. But nothing official has been announced from the Phillies, so we'll proceed for now as though there's actually going to be a game.

If they do play, Ross Detwiler will take the mound for the Nationals, trying to build off his solid-not-spectacular return from the DL last Thursday in Colorado. Detwiler faces a bolstered Phillies lineup, with Carlos Ruiz fresh off the DL himself and ready to wreak havoc on the Nats as he has done throughout his career.

Cliff Lee starts for Philadelphia, facing a Nationals lineup that desperately needs to get healthy and productive. Still waiting to hear if Denard Span will be back after missing last night's game with a bruised right foot, but he appeared to be moving around better after the night off.

Weather and game updates to come, so please check back…

4-0 Mets in the bottom of the 8th. The braves have struck out 13 times and there isn't even anybody named Upton in the lineup.

  2. natsfan1a - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Sounds like the weather here. My cat does not approve.

  3. Joe Seamhead - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:48 PM

uh-oh…bases loaded, nobody out for the Graves.

Joe, we have the Barfs discussion going on the other post.

  5. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Actually the Philadelphia radar doesn't look bad after 6:30 tonight. If they are willing to wait until game time (and who wouldn't want to play the Nats right now?), they'll probably get this one in. GYFNG!!!

  6. Tcostant - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:10 PM

NY Mets 4, Atlanta 3 after 8 innings.

  7. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:11 PM

Leftover comment from the Haren post. I'm afraid Davey's cryptic "We have a lot of faith in him" comment about Haren could go alongside "John is my No. 5 starter" for LannEn.

  8. Nats 128 - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Span leading off and Marrero and Kobernus back to the bench.

  9. sjb - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Especially since if this is rescheduled for the next Nats series in Philly starting July 8, chances are Harper will be back in the lineup.

  10. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Lineups on twitter. Span back in if they play. Ruiz back in catching for the Phillies.

BJ Upton out. Braves lose. 4-3

  16. Nats 128 - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:27 PM

At least the Mets didnt lose this in a walkoff.

Personally, I am so glad that we didn't get either Upton.

  21. Tcostant - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Summary – The Nationals need to have better luck.

  22. baseballswami - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:59 PM

There has been some iffy baseball, but you have got to admit that not much has gone our way, either. So we have the worst BABIP in baseball? Feels like it.

  23. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Gosh, seems like I missed a lot of good discussion today….Like this line up better than last nights, of course….

  24. Tcostant - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:01 PM

The fact is we're lucky to be only one game under .500

  25. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:04 PM

Tco – I think most of know that, regarding your post at 5:01 (not saying this snarkily or anything)At 1 point we had 5 people batting under 500 (including the pitcher) in our line up… The magnitude and timing of injuries hasn't helped us at all… We suffered injuries early last year but not to our best players or the SP…That's why I honestly believe, when we finally see the line up DJ had in mind, we instantly get better and I see us going on a roll….

  26. JD - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Mrs. B. Yes but we don't get to face Mr. Lannan tonight, unfortunately.

  27. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:05 PM

    Under .200*That's what I get for multi-tasking…

  28. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Come on JD… Don't kill my buzz… Here, I will let you have my kool aid and my rose colored glasses….

  29. JD - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Mrs B. Sorry. I was very discouraged last night. I thought we had things lined up pretty well with Howard and Papplebon done and also Bastardo and Stutes. If we just make it to extra innings I think we would have won.

  30. Candide - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Did you catch Mark's tweet to the right? Links to a quiz – Do You Know MLB Rules?I took it. Got one right answer out of ten questions. I'm going to go crawl back into my hole now…

  31. Section 222 - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:18 PM

    I got 4 Candide. Humbling.

  32. Candide - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:22 PM

  33. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:27 PM

Any word if Harper jogged today?

  34. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:27 PM

Totally understand JD… But I'm hoping that tonight we make Cliff Lee look like C Hmmels… The opposite of making a bad pitcher look good is my angle…. But last night's loss didnt piss me off as bad as the 3rd Cleveland game…. —> ugh!I took the quiz and got 6 correct….

  35. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:28 PM

2 out of 10 correct. Test gave me a migraine.Might have to start the bourbon and Maalox medication a bit early tonight…

  39. Section 222 - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:34 PM

The article is a lot of fun. Great quotes from smart baseball players who didn't get many questions right.

  46. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:53 PM

JD, I thought so also for extra innings.

  47. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 18, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Speaking of extra innings… Wonder when DJ will call Abad again… I know a concern for him was over using him… I didnt think it was a bad pitch by Abad either…

  50. Eric - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Is the quiz itself conveyed via video or is it available in text?

  51. Candide - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Eric – see my 5:22 comment – links directly to the quiz, which is all text.

  52. natsfan1a - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:09 PM

I got the same score as Aaron [AB] Boone, and my eyes glazed over as well. Also, the cat was distracting me, the sun was in my eyes, and I tripped over a pebble. Now, where's the [AB] ibuprofen?

  53. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:10 PM

    7, and learned two things.

  54. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Apropos of a discussion here a few days back on the still-unresolved MASN contract reset, MLB is now being sued by the City of San Jose over the A's non-move to San Jose. I only saw a short article; what I read suggested a broad challenge to MLB's power and legal status. No idea whether San Jose has a strong case, but obviously some of the issues are similar to those MLB, the Orioles, and Washington dealt with in moving the Expos to DC.

  55. baseballswami - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Hmmmmm. Interesting approach for San Jose. This stalling thing is just appalling.

  56. -Dan- - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:29 PM

I got 9 on the quiz, lost my bid to perfection on the ninth question, ugh.

  57. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:29 PM

  58. Candide - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:33 PM

MNF – see link in my 5:22 post.

  59. baseballswami - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:38 PM

The quiz is not for the faint of heart.

  60. David Proctor - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Interesting that Ian Desmond went and had a chat with Davey about the team. Said he doesn't think we're playing as loose as we were last year and everyone is uptight.

  61. baseballswami - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:45 PM

But will Davey take it to heart and do anything or will he blow him off? Seems like his way is to be pretty hands off and let guys figure things out on their own. Davey needs to have a fit and get tossed!

  62. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Thanks Candide.Scored 6, the 4 i missed i have probably have known incorrectly all along.

  63. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Swami @ 6:26: Exactly. And Bud Selig is, once again, seeking a consensus that can never be attained.Re the quiz: Took it. Only NSA will ever know how poorly I did.

  64. jeffwx - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:47 PM

4 out of ten who knew

  65. David Proctor - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:47 PM

  68. David Proctor - Jun 18, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Eugene@6:24The Pro sports leagues have it all over there players. I read an example in Grantland. Selig is either throwing his weight around SD or playing nice MTL Nats and Baltimore.Anti-trust is their greatest fear and they're skirting the border.

I am thinking this in game thread might be fun if we all just got drunk and silly, watched the game with no expectations and enjoyed baseball. Unis will probably be really dirty tonight. I love it when the players are just covered in dirt. Makes me miss Bryce though.

  96. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Agreed Swami. I hate it when people get so nasty. It's important to remember it's just a game. A game we all care deeply about, but a game nonetheless. Having said that, f the Phillies.

  133. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:38 AM

    Good inning Ross!

  134. Nats 128 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:39 AM

David, is it Woah or Whoa.

  135. baseballswami - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:39 AM

Joe- guilty as charged! That was a very Jordan- like inning. But Jayson got my heart rate up a bit.

  136. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Something I've noticed about our hitters: we guess too much. if we guess right, we usually do well. But if we get fooled or if the pitcher changes it up a lot, we do poorly. Maybe we need to go back to some "see ball, hit ball"

  137. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:41 AM

I think Woah and Whoa are both acceptable, but I am not sure. It's telling me that Woah is incorrect.

  138. Nats 128 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:43 AM

    Justin Upton now batting .243

  139. David - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:45 AM

can corey brown play catcher?? ok i'm joking. but seriously… what can we do about catcher?

  140. baseballswami - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:45 AM

David– I was commenting this weekend that I would love to see a series with no notebook- just watch the hitter before you, pay attention and hit. Couldn't do worse.

  141. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:46 AM

    Sigh….

  142. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:46 AM

David (the other one!), wait for Ramos to come back. That's all we can do.

  143. Joe Seamhead - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:47 AM

Det looks like a guy awkwardly hitting from the opposite of his natural side. I wonder if he could hit any better from the left side?

  144. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Yeah Werth was definitely thinking about his wrist there. Probably could've made the play, but I don't fault him for that.

  145. Joe Seamhead - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Werth wasn't falling on that wrist again!

  146. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Decent inning Ross…. Come on Nats bats!!!

  147. Section 222 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Again misidentification of a pitch or location. If coach can't help that why have a coach.Folks, come on. We're facing Cliff F'ing Lee. For the last decade he's been one of best pitchers in baseball. His command is legendary. If you think a different hitting coach is going to make his pitchers any more recognizable or hittable when he's on, you have completely left reality behind.

  148. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:59 AM

Completely agree Sec 222, but this isn't one night against a great pitcher. A season against good, mediocre and poor pitchers.

  149. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:00 AM

WHY DO WE TAKE SO MANY CALLED STRIKE 3'S.

  150. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:02 AM

    BOO THAT.

  151. Nats 128 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:02 AM

    Laser tag!

  152. Joe Seamhead - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:02 AM

    YOWSA!

  153. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:03 AM

    Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!

  154. Section 222 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:05 AM

A Nats fan caught Werth's home run. Awesome!

  155. BigCat - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:05 AM

That was probably the worst swing I have ever seen zim take in his career here. Good going Werth!

  156. Section 222 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:08 AM

I hear you DavidP, but I just think we need to give it a rest tonight. People take 3rd strikes against Lee because his command is pinpoint and his stuff is filthy. We know that Rendon has a great eye, and can handle the bat. It's no knock on him that Lee has struck him out twice. It happens. But sometimes you guess right, as Werth did. Now let's see Det hold this lead.

  157. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:11 AM

    That was fast..

  158. BigCat - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:12 AM

Double. Sac bunt. Sac fly One run. Simple

  159. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:13 AM

Phillies playing small-ball with their 2-3-4 hitters. Not sure I get that, but okay. It worked.

  160. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:15 AM

You've gotta be kidding me… 2 batters and they both only saw 2 pitches..

  161. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:16 AM

I don't mind only seeing two pitches. Lee is throwing strikes. First pitch is usually best to hit. Lombo's should've been a base hit. I think "taking pitches" is very overrated and works to the pitcher's advantage by letting them get ahead. That ball to Det was outside.

  162. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:17 AM

Lee with a 7 pitch inning and 5 pitches went to our pitcher…Terrible.

  163. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Zim's base hit and Werth's HR were both first pitch swings. Lee is throwing strikes, there's no reason to let him get ahead. If it's a good pitch to hit, hit it.

  164. Joe Seamhead - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:20 AM

Wasn't it ALR's base hit, David?

  165. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:21 AM

ALR had a base hit on a first pitch swing as well. So all of our hits today are on the first pitch.

  166. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:22 AM

This is not a Cliff Kee problem, all 70 games we have had this same problem. The question is genetal not specific to that, just reminded me of the overall problem.

  167. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:23 AM

I was on my nightly errand so catching, but I see saw my drift, which Sec 222 missed.

  168. Joe Seamhead - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:24 AM

Werth took his time going into the batter's box to slow Lee down, before jumping on Lee's first pitch.

  169. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:24 AM

Because batters are totally misidentifying or miss guessing the pitch.

  170. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:25 AM

Uhm.. I thought Adam got the hit on the 2nd swing…I hate first pitch swinging…

  171. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:26 AM

    Nice play, Span!

  172. Nats 128 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:26 AM

    Huge play!

  173. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:26 AM

I would give it a rest if the team stsrts identifying at a much higher rate.

  174. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:27 AM

Dang, wish I could have seen the throw to home from Denard…

  175. Section 222 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:28 AM

MNF, I didn't miss your drift. You've been complaining about Eck for weeks. Tonight the criticism, of Eck, and of our hitters, is off base. We're facing a world class pitcher. You can't ignore that. Great throw and great tag to keep the game tied. Nicely done.Oh, and let it never be said that the Nats have never benefited from a bad ball/strike call.

  176. Joe Seamhead - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Great play by Span and Zook's. Dumb play on the Phillies part to try to score on that shallow of a hit.

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:29 AM

Good job Span.Your most hittable against Lee is the first most often. So do you want them swing less hittable pitch. The game plan is better tonight.Against Lannan that would be a bad call.

  178. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:31 AM

When the ball is over middle lwer quandrant it will be a strike no matter who is pitching. You sre so wrong, I complained about Eck since April 2010

  179. Section 222 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:31 AM

Mrs B, swinging at Lee's first pitch is often a good move. If you take the first two pitchers against him, you could easily end up in a 0-2 count. That's not where you want to be.

  180. Section 222 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:34 AM

Ok, MNF, whatever. If you think the ultimate locations of every pitcher's pitches are equally recognizable as they come out of his hand I don't know what to tell you.

  181. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:38 AM

Werth did what Mrs. B wanted the 3,,rd at battook first 2 for strikes.I like the results of swingirg first.Granted strike one at best results in a single to right.

  182. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:38 AM

I'd be happy if we won this game 2-1….

  183. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:39 AM

It's nothing wrong with taking the first pitch… Not all the time is it the best pitch…Zook and Lombo did what some of y'all wanted … I'd rather they take a pitch or 2.. Rendon did too…

  184. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:39 AM

With my eyesight they all look bad, I assume at the major league level they should see it a lot better.

  185. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:40 AM

Revere did exactly what I wish Span would do. Drag bunt.

  186. BigCat - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:41 AM

    Phil's gonna be running here

  187. Secret wasian man - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:41 AM

Why does Zimmerman insist on giving a strike away every at bat

  188. BigCat - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:43 AM

Manassas. When is young gonna be considered a Natkiller?

  189. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:43 AM

Can any of our pitchers actually any one. Unfortunately the answer I believe is no.

    Poor pitching there Ross.

  192. David Proctor - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Sigh. They executed the hit and run flawlessly.

    Unh….

  194. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Detwiler allowing 3-2 count. Kills any chance to stop Revere.

  195. mick - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:45 AM

very impressed with Det…I feel sorry for him because once again a fine effort will be wasted…I can tell by R Zim's terrible at bats… also, have been a Span fan since day one and Denard made one hell of a play!It does not matter how good our 4 starting pitchers are if your team is the worst hitting MLB team…so sick of the excuses and defending players who are not that good or over rated. R Zim looks clueless at the plate tonight.2-1, game over..i go into each game thinking they have only a 40% chance to win

  196. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:47 AM

Is any warming up or are ee going to have another implotion that Davey never seems to stop

  197. Nats 128 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:47 AM

    Ross has totally lost it.

  198. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:48 AM
