Game 72: Rockies at Nats

Jun 20, 2013, 7:30 PM EST

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

Hello from South Capitol Street, which hasn't hosted a ballgame in 11 days. The Nationals at last return to familiar territory after an eventful, not-entirely-successful, 4-5 road trip to Colorado, Cleveland and Philadelphia, hoping last night's dramatic, 11-inning win was the start of a long-awaited hot streak.

Having Jordan Zimmermann on the mound tonight against the Rockies certainly helps the cause. The right-hander is looking to become only the third pitcher in the majors to reach the 10-win mark this season, joining Adam Wainwright and Max Scherzer, but he'll have to put forth a better outing than he did last time in Cleveland when he blew an early 5-0 lead.

Roy Oswalt makes his 2013 debut, having signed a minor-league deal with the Rockies and built his arm back up to shape. There's really no way to know how the 35-year-old will look tonight, given the fact he hasn't appeared in a major-league game since last fall with the Rangers (when he wasn't very good).

I'll be starting the game thread tonight, but then I have to head over to Bethesda for tonight's episode of The Baseball Show, so Chase will take over in-stream. Check back for plenty of updates…

The season has DEFINITELY turned the corner. I feel it every time I read "#EatFace."

  2. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:42 PM

You know, there were a few people posting here who were convinced we would lose all nine. We usually say .500 on the road- one game off. And I reall do feel that the bottom has passed with Det and Stras back and the better bullpen, Rendon in the mix. Onward and upward from here!!

  3. UnkyD - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:44 PM

Eating Some Face…. Is the new Hacking The Gorse!GYFNG!!!!!

  4. Section 222 - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Det and Stras back will make a big difference. No more wondering whether the spot starter can succeed, as Ross O did, or fail, as Karns and Duke did. But one game doesn't an offensive turnaround make. I fear that until Harper returns we have no chance for consistent offense. I'm sure looking forward to not seeing Harper tweets about other sports during our games.

  5. d'grviii 8 - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:49 PM

All can say is keep a close eye on your autocorrect if you want to talk about eating faces. Don't ask me how I know that.

  6. SonnyG10 - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:50 PM

Let's get an early lead boys, and Jordan will hold it for us. Tenth win for Jordan tonight! GYFNG! #ESFI just want to try out my new AVATAR…is that what you call the little pictures?

  7. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:50 PM

I hear you, as in I don' t think the offense will suddenly become consistent. But I think we might see more flashes of it, more of those games where we have a lot of hits. Knocking on that door. Eventually they might pick up a little more steam.

  8. SonnyG10 - Jun 20, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Dang, its hard to read. It says NI SONNY G above the number 10.

Eating Some Face…. Is the new Hacking The Gorse! All can say is keep a close eye on your autocorrect if you want to talk about eating faces. According to the Glossary, Gorse Hacking resulted from an auto correct failure on UnkyD's phone. So technically, the new Hacking the Gorse would be…. Oh never mind.

  10. Section 222 - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:01 PM

It's legible Sonny, and very cool. And No. 10 is the number used for the best player in some sports, right?

  11. Theophilus T. S. - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Actually, the lineup TBA is strangely reassuring. At least you don't have to read the list of guys whose BAs are lower than the pitcher's.

  12. natsfan1a - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:03 PM

Looks nice, Sonny. If people click on the avatar, they'll see a bigger pic.Indeed, sec 222. :-)

(Oh, that was for the, um, 4:00 comment.)

  14. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:05 PM

Hacking is often used to signify an automatic or mechanical watch's ability to synchronize time by stopping the seconds hand when setting the time. This has important applications in a variety of fields, especially in the military and law enforcement.

  15. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Come on Theo, can't we at least enjoy today following a big win? :) Roy Oswalt is an interesting matchup. Great pitcher but really struggled for Texas last year. I wonder if he has anything left. Guess we'll find out.

  16. natsfan1a - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:06 PM

I suppose that we should add "eat somebody's face/ESF" to the Glossary.

  17. SonnyG10 - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:07 PM

Section 222 said…It's legible Sonny, and very cool. And No. 10 is the number used for the best player in some sports, right?June 20, 2013 4:01 PMThanks, deuces. I guess you're right about 10 being a number for good players. In my case it was kinda an accident. I tried to sign on as sonnyg1 because that's my logon for some other sites, but it was already taken on Blogger, so I went for sonnyg10. I kinda like that better now and it definitely looks better on my nats shirt.

Yes, I do realize that, 222. My comment was specific to Sonny's avatar.

  22. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Can we please face Cy Young's klutzy, nerdy, little cousin once in a while?

Going to the game tonight fo rhe first time this year. Is the parking lot on Potomac Ave., (cement plant) still open? The one right accross from the home plate entrance. Also, is it still possible to get on street parking? Thanks for your input

http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=12745349would you face off against a team consisting bo jackson and frank thomas? LOL, I would run the other direction.David, that was a terrible picture.

  27. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:27 PM

I have watched the replay of the slamma jamma a few times today. Desi just uncoills. How sweet was that game for Jayson ?? Karma, baby! Bet the wrist did not hurt at all. Oh, Nats- I hope this was not just another tease. The Charlie Brown routine is getting old.

  28. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:38 PM

James Wagner ‏@JamesWagnerWP 2mDavey says Bryce Harper looked great today, and was running & going to take batting practice. "He's close." Would need a rehab assignment.

  29. SonnyG10 - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:43 PM

Davie, good news about Bryce. Hope there are no setbacks…we really need him in the lineup.

  30. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Sounds like Ramos, too! Afraid to trust it yet, heart has been broken too many times.

  31. Theophilus T. S. - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:54 PM

David Proctor — I'm going to be skeptical until the pitcher truly is the worst hitter in the lineup every night. I'm trying to enjoy last night as much it deserves being enjoyed.

  32. baseballswami - Jun 20, 2013 at 8:59 PM

When it happens, it's a special moment. I cherish it. I want more.

  33. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 20, 2013 at 9:08 PM

Yep, encouraging news on Bryce and Ramos. Bo news on Sharks eye and Tracy says he's fine which scares me.

Is it me or does Gio seem more reserved this year?

  51. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 10:41 PM

I don't think Gio is more reserved, I think they just don't focus on him so much since we already know how outgoing he was. Last year, it was his first year and it was new to us. His interview on FOX was great.

  52. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 20, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Is it me or does Gio seem more reserved this year?I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if all the no-decisions are starting to get on his nerves a little.

I hope the Spurs win, SWM. I'll be flipping back and forth between the two games.

  58. A DC Wonk - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:04 PM

Leading indicator that the Nats might be starting to turn things around? The Nats have only four victories when trailing after seven innings. All four have home in the last two weeks.

  59. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Yep and we nearly did it a 5th time in the first game of the Phillies series.

  62. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:13 PM

Throw a couple balls, Jordan. They're allowed.

  63. A DC Wonk - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Wow. JZ after one inning:15 pitches. 15 strikes.

  64. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:14 PM

    Whew… A few fat pitches by Jordan…

  65. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Balls that appear like strikes are allowed, not just balls.

  66. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Come on Joe… That was a clear ball….

  67. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:19 PM

That was not even close to a strike. Span was putting together a good AB.

  68. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Espinosa just sruck out swinging in his first at bat. 15 K's in 22 AB's.

  71. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:23 PM

  72. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:24 PM

David no guarentee zimm gets that call. It way out to lefties. Next one JZim gets an 0-2 on a lefty throw in same spot and see if Joe West is consisyant.

  73. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:24 PM

If Joe West is gonna give him that ball for a strike, Jordan better get the same thing…

  75. A DC Wonk - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:33 PM

  76. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:34 PM

FYI Rockies 156 more hits than NatsRockies 34 more walksNationals 24 more strike outsResults Rockies 107 more runs. About 40% more runs

  77. paul brandt - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:35 PM

off topic but wondering if anyone has an idea: what is the average # of baseballs used in a MLB game? between foul balls, HR's, guys throwing balls into the stands, am sure it fluctuates big time but have always been curious…have to think there is a stat for it somewhere.

  78. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Let's see how we do second time around against Oswalt. They probably don't know what to expect their first time up there.

  86. paul brandt - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:43 PM

MrsB, he's in his walk year so maybe a prospect or two, he would be a rental for a contender, more likely for an AL team given the DH but just my opinion.

  87. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:45 PM

I'm never ever nervous when Jordan is pitching….

  88. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:45 PM

That last ball by Zim looked like a routine fly and it nearly left the park.I see the jet stream to right field is starting to pick up as the weather gets warmer.

  89. paul brandt - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:45 PM

and more likely than not, a decent draft pick too, maybe?

  90. A DC Wonk - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:46 PM

JZ after three: 38 pitches, 33 strikes.

  91. David Proctor - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:47 PM

I know most people are gushing over the 38:33 ratio, but I kind of wish JZimm would throw more balls. Not like Gio or anything, but get guys out of the zone.

  92. A DC Wonk - Jun 20, 2013 at 11:48 PM

MrsB loves the Nats said… I'm never ever nervous when Jordan is pitching….I was just thinking that to myself, too. Two guys gets hits in the first inning, it's first and third, and — more than any other pitcher on the Nats — I'm thinking: no problem, he's got this.

I feel bad for Espinosa, I really do. Even if you don't think he's good, he's better than THIS. He's in some kind of funk.

I think ALR might have been out — I could be wrong, but it sure looked like ALR's lead foot went over the plate without touching it, and, if so, he was out.

  127. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:21 AM

Trent Jewitt with a good send…. *golf claps*

  128. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:22 AM

I agree that ALR may have been out, but it was VERY close.

  129. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:22 AM

    Oswalt 2213 innings. 1818 K about 7 and inning, 3 in 4 innings not 9

  130. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:23 AM

off topic but wondering if anyone has an idea: what is the average # of baseballs used in a MLB game? Fewer than I would have guessedWikianswers: How many baseballs are used in an MLB game?

  131. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:24 AM

His front leg over the plate back leg and ball were so close very hard to tell.

  132. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:24 AM

Wonk…..I agree but from where West was watching, he had to look safe.

  133. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:26 AM

    63 pitches 50 striked

  134. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:27 AM

  136. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:28 AM

Aww poor Span. I was sure that was gone.

  137. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:29 AM

Span wants to get off our crap list.3 good at bats in lat 5 t bats

  138. A DC Wonk - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:29 AM

NatsJack in Florida said… Wonk…..I agree but from where West was watching, he had to look safe.I absolutely agree. You could only tell that his foot was up, because it was a close-to-ground level camera. When you're on top of it, as West was, he totally must have looked safe.(Manassas Fan — I owe you a drink — and I'll pass the pitch/strike count baton to you for the rest of the game ;-) )

  139. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:29 AM

  142. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:31 AM

  148. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:33 AM

Come on Zim, make effing contact.

  149. paul brandt - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:34 AM

Sec 3 – thanks re. # of baseballs, pretty cool….MNF, thanks for the Oswalt/K stat – I only meant tonight and agree it is a small sample size but alot of K's nonetheless altho looks like we are getting to him now…but Rzim, what's up?

  150. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:34 AM

    Zim, Zim, Zim…

  151. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:34 AM

Zim is making a habit of stranding runner at 3rd with less than 2 outs

  152. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:34 AM

That was a really good jump by Rendon….Poor Zimm…

  153. Candide - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Know who Rendon reminds me of? Wade Boggs. On low pitches, crouches down into the strike zone, goes oppo, doubles/gap power.

  154. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:36 AM

Mrs. B…..You only send him with nobody out when it is clear that there is no play at the plate.Nevee make the first out of the inning at home or third. Ever.

  155. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:36 AM

Yeah but with Span's speed… I think he makes it….

  156. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:38 AM

That a boy Adam! He's heating up again, folks.

  157. Candide - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:38 AM

  160. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:39 AM

Adam LaRoche and his BLAZING SPEED!!!!! Lol… I love it!

  161. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:39 AM

That is LaRoche's second triple of the year. Who woulda thunk.Oswalt has fooled Werth tonight.

  162. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:39 AM

ALR picks up RZim. That's what good teams do.

  163. paul brandt - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:39 AM

what the?? thank you CF, why didn't he catch it, ALR, let go of the piano! but hey, he did make it into 3b!!…yes, ESF.

  164. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Is it bad that I don't want us to score any more runs (maybe let Desi plate ALR) because then Zim will meltdown?

  165. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Werth ate face last night, and letting other enjoy tonight. He cant see Oswalt's pitches.2 left man on third with less than ,2 outs

  166. phil dunton - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Wow, this is like a flash back to last year. Maybe Desmond's slam last night has turned this team around.

  167. Secret wasian man - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Great job Adam. Strike zone is a complete joke tonight when Nats are up.

  168. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Paul – maybe he didnt want to face plant…. Or he thought it was gone…But I'm glad he didnt…

  169. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Danny Espinosa strikes out for the third time tonite and the seventh time in a row.

  170. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:42 AM

    100Th pitch

  171. paul brandt - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:43 AM

MNF, agree, Werth did his job last night with the bat and the night before with "eat some face" comment, he's not seeing Oswalt but have to think Roy is done now.

  172. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:43 AM

If Oswalt is done, Werth is probably the happiest guy on the team.

  173. A DC Wonk - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:46 AM

Oswalt struck out way more than his average, but he also gave up way many more hits than his average, too.

  174. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:46 AM

Carp in the spirit president eating face of warning track.

  175. Candide - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:47 AM

Regarding ALR's triple:Bill James once wrote about watching Willie Mays Aikens hit a triple when Aikens was with the Royals. Royals were winning the game in a blowout, and late in the game, Aikens hit a ball that got past the outfielders and kicked around all over the place. Aikens was never a gazelle, and James and his wife realized this might be the first 3-bagger of his career. They cheered wildly while Willie chugged around the bases, and went crazy when he slid safely into third, much to the puzzlement of the other fans around them, who were wondering why they were getting so excited when the Royals had a ten-run lead.Willie retired with two triples his entire career.

NatsJack in Florida said… Danny Espinosa strikes out for the third time tonite and the seventh time in a row.Wow. That really is sad. I can't even imagine how frustrated he must be feeling now.

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Will not be here next inning 72 pitches 56 strikes

  178. paul brandt - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:50 AM

see the Prez race? awesome…greatest marketing ploy for a DC sports team in a long time…however, who remembers "Tiny" the Bullets little dachshund who would run out at old Cap Centre to fetch the ball during time-outs with a wagon in tow? classic!! although I still have an affinity for the SD chicken who really jump started the "mascot" thing…sorry I'm off topic again.

  179. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:50 AM

JZim with No Hitter type of stuff tonight with that 3 hitter.

  180. Candide - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:51 AM

A DC Wonk said… NatsJack in Florida said… Danny Espinosa strikes out for the third time tonite and the seventh time in a row. Wow. That really is sad. I can't even imagine how frustrated he must be feeling now.Maybe.I suspect the hitting coach in Syracuse doesn't give a rat's behind. He wants Danny to purge the bad habits he's accumulated over the past two years, and learn how to hit all over again.I hear learning how to hit is… difficult.

  181. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:52 AM

JZim with 72 pitches through 6. I'm thinking Davey would like to see him go CG.

  182. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:52 AM

    Hustle double for Lombo.

  183. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:52 AM

    Outfielers not ready for that.

  184. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Good hit Lombo…. That's what I get for saying I'm tired of seeing him in the line up…Also doing better in the OF…*golf claps*

  185. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:53 AM

If he less than 100 going into 9th

  186. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:54 AM

Nats playing with enthusiasm tonight. Love the hustle. Lombo making the most of this start!

  187. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:54 AM

For Espinosa, that's 17 K's in 24 AAA at bats. That means he's put the ball in play only 7 times with 1 single. If this doesn't tell him that he's unable to produce in spite of what the medical pros tell him, I don't know does.

  188. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:54 AM

@Paul Brandt: I too remember Tiny. Best thing to come out of Baltimore since the crab cake.

  189. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:55 AM

Now 1 for 4. Only ALR successful.

  191. dwb115 - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:56 AM

They say you get worse before you get better, so let's hope that's true for Espinosa

  192. David Proctor - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:57 AM

    Good AB by Zim!

  193. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 21, 2013 at 12:57 AM
