Instant Analysis: Rockies 7, Nats 6

Jun 23, 2013, 8:41 PM EST

Game in a nutshell: The Nats were beaten by the Rockies for the second time in as many days due to another unfortunate outing by their starting pitcher. A day after Dan Haren failed to get out of the fourth inning, Ross Detwiler suffered the same fate. Detwiler gave up a solo home run to Michael Cuddyer in the second inning and allowed three runs in each of the next two frames. He ended the day with seven earned runs overall in what was his worst start of the season. Just like Haren, he gave the Nats an early deficit that was too much to overcome. The Nats rallied to score six runs, but it was too little too late. They fell just short of the comeback.

Hitting highlight: The Nats nearly came back in the eighth inning with four runs in the frame. Steve Lombardozzi and Denard Span started things off with a pair of singles and Jeff Kobernus then walked to load the bases. A Ryan Zimmerman single and Jhonatan Solano double brought home four runners to make it a one run game. That one run, however, held up for the Rockies.

This loss is all on…Ross Detwiler, just as yesterday's was on Dan Haren. Too deep of a hole to crawl out of.

  2. Joe Seamhead - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:45 PM

Mark, what's the deal with Jayson Werth?

  3. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:45 PM

Agreed Joe. Still a nice comeback.

  4. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Oh well… It became an entertaining game, after all… Starting pitching, once again, was an issue…. But the Nats showed fight… We hit the ball well today but needed to capitalize on more RISP….

  5. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:48 PM

I agree Joe but Desi should have made contact instead of swinging for the fences when he had guys in the corner… And Marerro, well, I have no words about his at bat when bases were loaded…

  6. jeffwx - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:48 PM

so who's up for Werth and Haren

  7. Secret wasian man - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:49 PM

A nice comeback. Umpires call of strike two on Ian was awful. Took the bat right out of his hands. Starting pitching has to be better.

  8. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Rendon should have been on third as Fowler wad not in posirion on the Zim fly to throw to 3rd.Would have scored on Shark's hitJust saying

  9. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    Agreed MNF….

  10. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Groin pull for Werth?!?!?!?Gosh, it's like the injury bug lives at Nats Park…

  11. Kirbs - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Way to put up a fight!

  12. baseballswami - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Too bad Det had a rough day. Once again– when we pitch we don't hit, when we end up hitting, we don't pitch. And– whatever can go wrong for the Nats will go wrong for the Nats. What a ridiculous season so far. Good thing our division is so weak. D- bags this week– hmmmm. Scary? Whatever will our lineup look like on Tuesday??? Going to PNats soon– hope to see a good game- WAS kind of originally hoping for Bryce , but….

  13. baseballswami - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:59 PM

2 more DL?? Corey Brown next up?? Haren I expected- we have been predicting the mystery ailment, but Jayson??? Eat some gluten or something! Revolving door.

  14. Joe Seamhead - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Sounds likely that Jayson will be out for a while.Get used to having a field full of 2nd basemen, or "utility players" if you will.Haren has something wrong, but not sure what, but it's definitely bad. Well, "it" really is bad enough to send him to the DL.

  15. Drew - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:01 PM

The Nats' top pick, righty Jake Johansen, is about to make his debut for Auburn.

  16. paul brandt - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:03 PM

bring up Steve Souza from Harrisburg as an OF for Werth, give the kid a chance, batting .305, OBP of .403, SLG of .570 & OPS of .973…big kid, 6'3, 220 lbs. Don't know if Werth is headed for the DL but it sure sounds like it.

  17. David Proctor - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:05 PM

    Detwiler is feisty today…

  18. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:05 PM

    Wow… Det has a major attitude…. Lol… Okay, even Haren isn't that bad…

  19. Section 222 - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Davey is virtually confirming that Haren has been HRodded. "Trouble getting loose."

  20. Section 222 - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Fowler conceded the base with his pop fly lob throw into 2nd. Wonder what Bo Porter would say? Probably be chewin Rendon's ass.Fowler wasn't conceding the base with his throw — he saw that Rendon wasn't tagging. Zim's ball was hit pretty hard to the gap. Rendon would have had to get right back to the bag to tag. That's a tough read to make right off the bat because you want to be halfway so you can score if the ball drops in.

  21. paul brandt - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:07 PM

DP/MrsB, missed Det, what was the gist of it?

  22. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:08 PM

Sect222, however it went down. Hand in the door, dust to a locker, pulled muscle from sneezing….

  23. SonnyG10 - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Heard Ray Knight say on post-game that we've had our starting 8 players on the field only for 10 games this year. No wonder we're having trouble winning games.

  24. David Proctor - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:09 PM

They asked if he needs to change his pitch sequencing some. He said "No." They asked about what he needs to do better and he was like "Look at the pitch Stammen made, it was a good pitch and it just fell in, 2 RBI right there. It was one of those days. Maybe I should be like Krol and strike everyone out, maybe I should be more like that." but he said it with a major attitude. It was odd because Det's not normally like that.

  25. Joe Seamhead - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Deuces, he has a really bad something. Sounds bad.

  26. jeffwx - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:10 PM

tradable in mid July: Karns, Bernadina, Kobernus, Abad, Espinosa, Moore, E. Davis, Storen, Brown for an outfielder… to get value, must trade pitchingHaren on DL with shoulder strain

  27. paul brandt - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:13 PM

DP, thanks, that is odd, maybe he's just frustrated like all of us! Ump was not giving him the low pitch early on which made him elevate his pitches, not an excuse but certainly did not help him. Liked the comeback tho.

  28. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:13 PM

Yeah – what DP said… Only 2 balls were hit hard… They scored 6 runs but couldn't get it done….Just major attitude…

  29. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Yeah Sonny…. Injuries suck as seemingly with Werth going on the DL, it's gonna be a while longer until we finally seem them…

  30. Drew - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:15 PM

I know they need OF help. Just noting that shortstop Zach Walters has his avg. back to .250 and he now has 18 home runs in 68 games to lead the minor league system. His on base percentage is still under .300, but he's working his way toward a September call up.

  31. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:16 PM

I really like the Rays closer….

  32. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:16 PM

That's the way I read Det……frustrated. Yes, he gave up the 2 solo shots but everything else was tweeners and bloops. And, like me, he doesn't suffer silly questions (comments on my part) well.

  33. jeffwx - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:21 PM

so….phil wood speculates that the 08-09 Nats could outhit the Nats as currently constituted ??

  34. jeffwx - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:23 PM

and harper bobbleheads going high on ebay 70-80 and rising

  35. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Phil Wood also had Micah Owings coming north with the big club out of Spring Training.Silly.

  36. jeffwx - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:27 PM

yes, i found that hard to even postulate

  37. Drew - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Looks like big Jake Johansen battled nerves or mechanical troubles in his first pro inning, but pitched his way out of trouble. He walked the first two guys, then went groundout, strikeout, groundout.Auburn and Johansen are scoreless after one.

  38. Candide - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Just back from the game. Met Natsfan1a and ArVAFan, who, it turns out, Cunegonde and I already knew as a STH at the Alexandria Symphony. Small world! Not going to go over all the posts and probably rehash what has already been turned into hash. Just want to add a little story:When Joe West called a Rockies runner safe at first on what looked like a DP (don't know what the replays showed…), we all bnooed lustily. There was a couple two rows ahead of us with their infant – probably a year old, at most. Kid was enjoying himself throughout the game up to that point. The second the booing started, the baby started crying his head off.We all yelled at West: "West, see what you did? You made a baby cry! Even the baby knows you were wrong! You lousy waste of human flesh!" And so on.That was pretty much the high point of the game until the bottom of the eighth inning. Desmond…ARGHHHH! Had to go for the bomb when a single would have tied the game.

  39. Candide - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:50 PM

  40. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:53 PM

Sorry Candide….West got it right but good story anyway.

  41. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:53 PM

Yankees have had many more so I dont have pitty on us more than otherd

  42. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:55 PM

Wow….the Cubs let Henry close todays game. They felt he could cover a 14-5 lead.He did and only gave up 1 run.

  43. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:56 PM

I went through only found 5 games. 4-1

  44. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:58 PM

  45. Drew - Jun 23, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Matt Purke had a good outing for Hagerstown, throwing five scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts and one walk.

  46. Faraz Shaikh - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:00 PM

I was prepared to read, 'they felt wrong'.tough loss. RD really put us in a bind. if that cuddy single does not happen against Stammen, we win this game. ugh, so close. anyways, let's get to that on tuesday.

  47. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:01 PM

According to my research5 games with opning starters. Even replacing Danny with Rendon we wont see starters together for a while.

  48. Candide - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:02 PM

NJ – we didn't care so much whether he was right or wrong, just wanted an excuse to revile him. Kid's parents thought the whole thing was hilarious.

  49. Scott Margenau - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:04 PM

I don't mind a little 'tude from Det. I like to see some fire. I was encouraged to see ( err Listen as I crossed the bay bridge back to NoVa) that we mounted a come back: Random thoughts:1. Werth can't stay healthy. 2. Zim has been much better throwing, and with timely hits3. We picked up a bunch of good ML talent in Rendon, Abad, Kroll that none of us saw happening this year. Even Rendon was unproven and now he is out best hitter, maybe player4. Desi hasn't made an error in4ever5. Bryce is back soon :-So lots to look forward to. I think we need to see what Perez and Brown can do while Werth heals for a run after the break. Thoughts?

  50. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Joe West deserves to be razzed just for showing up.

  51. Drew - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:05 PM

Big Jake Johansen is out of the game in Auburn. All told, it was a fine debut, but control will be the issue. He faced 10 batters and got four groundouts and one fly out. He struck out two and walked three, allowing no hits.Kudos to the Kid for signing and getting to work.

  52. Drew - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:08 PM

    You're welcome.

  53. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:18 PM

In Phil Wood's defense, how is worst hitting team in baseball difficult to understand? Harper has been out for a month. Ryan Zimmerman seems not to be quite the hitter he used to be. We have no Adam Dunn. This team can't hit and needs power so what did we do? We brought in low average slap hitter to play in the outfield, which is normally a strong hitting position. Even when he hits, Span's bloop hits and grounders can't come close to making up for the power that Dunn and Morse brought. The season is half over and our lead-off hitter has scored 28 runs. If anyone on here thinks that cuts it now or will cut it in the future, then feel free to excoriate Mr. Wood.

  54. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:18 PM

so….phil wood speculates that the 08-09 Nats could outhit the Nats as currently constituted ??==============2008 Nats: 3.98 runs/game.2009 Nats: 4.38 runs/game.2013 Nats: 3.47 runs/game.You can quibble about what 'outhit' means, but those teams outscored this year's club (with over half the season left to go, of course).

  55. SonnyG10 - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:21 PM

I have concerns for Werth, Zimmerman, and Ramos staying healthy. Especially Ramos. This kid needs to be able to give us a full season, or his potential is not going to do us much good.Maybe RZim is good to go now. He hasn't made a throwing error in a while.

  56. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:23 PM

NatsJack with the Ad hominem argument against Phil Wood…Somehow, I don't think Wood's opinion with reference to Micah Owens in Spring Training renders him incapable of being right about anything else, but Ad hominem arguments seem to often sway the masses. Here are some more common examples of this type of argument:What does she know? She is just a woman(Man)(African-American)etc…..Well, your husband plowed under his cornfield and turned it into a ballpark.Well, what would you expect a blank to say….Are you going to listen to so and so? He lives in his mother's basement. Well the last one might have some truth to it….

  57. David Proctor - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:27 PM

I'm actually not as concerned about Ramos as many are. I know the "injury prone" label is starting to get attached to him, but I really think this is all one big incident. He said the first hammy injury was probably a result of him trying to get back so soon from the ACL. Then he came back and reinjured the hammy again. If he is truly 100% when he returns, I think it's safe to assume he'll be reasonably healthy. That's a huge addition.

  58. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Ryan Zimmerman hit 33 homers 3 or 4 years ago. I mean was that it? Was that the peak? If it was, then he was a bit oversold and I think that is where disappointment comes in. You have Manny Machado over in Baltimore who is already both a better defender and hitter than Ryan. I wasn't expecting Mike Schmidt, but Ryan seems not to even be Doug Rader. He is a nice player but for the face of the franchise, I don't know if his current level of play is going to be satisfactory to most fans.

  59. David Proctor - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Last year, Ryan hit .282 with 25 HR and 36 2B. I would take that production every time. Also, while Machado is probably a better hitter, he doesn't hit for as much power as Ryan so not sure what you're getting at by bringing up HRs.

  60. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:39 PM

I thought Zimmerman was going to be a fringe hall of fame type player. That clearly is not the case. He will be a guy that people will remember but I think Carpenter needs to stop calling him the Face of the Franchise. That helps nobody.

  61. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:44 PM

WODL…. so then I'll put it this way. Comparing full season totals to a 75 game stretch and declaring that those teams were better…. I still say silly.Once this season is over and the numbers prove them better,,,, then OK. But unil then…. well… just refer to last season.

  62. Jeff - Jun 23, 2013 at 10:53 PM

Watching this game was frustrating from a plate discipline perspective Marrero swung at the first pitch the majority of the time. What kills me is he does that right after a walk when the pitcher's command struggling (walking Desmond no less). So, Marrero goes, hacks at 1st pitch and pops up.No plate discipline or philosophy.

  63. David Proctor - Jun 23, 2013 at 11:03 PM

The Giants are 38-37 and just got dominated by the Marlins. Marlins won the series too.

  64. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 23, 2013 at 11:08 PM

I will buy that and obviously, we all hope to see better.

  65. Candide - Jun 23, 2013 at 11:09 PM

Faraz – Cunegonde has your Harper bobblehead. Now you have to get the Davey one to swap for it.

  66. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 23, 2013 at 11:24 PM

When I was growing up, you went to games to see the games, not to get a bobblehead, and we liked it that way!

  67. d'grviii 8 - Jun 23, 2013 at 11:39 PM

I heard the Phil Wood comment as I drove home from the game today. He basically said that this team right now is hitting worse than the 2008-2009 Nats did. And you know what? He's right. Suck on that, NatsJerk.

  68. natsfan1a - Jun 24, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Just got home after going out to eat with some friends after the game. Haven't read posts or comments but wanted to say that it was nice meeting Candide, Cunegonde, and ArVaFan as well as running into NatsLady later.
