Game 76: Diamondbacks at Nats

Jun 25, 2013, 7:34 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

After a rough end to their weekend and then an off-day, the Nationals are back at it tonight, opening a new series with the NL West-leading Diamondbacks, all the while keeping an eye on what's happening down the road in Woodbridge, where tonight Bryce Harper is scheduled to play three innings for Class A Potomac. Chase Hughes will be on-site and will have updates on Harper's rehab, so be sure to check the site for that.

Back here on South Capitol Street, the Nationals have Jayson Werth back in their lineup after he left Sunday's game with what appeared to be a groin injury. But, in a surprise development, Ryan Zimmerman is not listed on Davey Johnson's lineup card. You wouldn't think he'd need a day off after the club didn't play yesterday, but perhaps there's a little nagging something going on. Stay tuned.

Gio Gonzalez gets the start, hoping to continue his impressive run while actually earning the win for a change. Right-hander Trevor Cahill is on the mound for Arizona.

Updates to come…

Great inning…. Okay Gio, you got a good amount of run support… Don't screw it up!

  2. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:07 AM

MrsB, that was some great small ball prior to the paydirt!

  3. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Chase Hughes ‏@chasehughesCSN 35sHarper just went first to third on a Michael Taylor single, helmet came off and everything. He looked as fast as usual.

  4. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:08 AM

4.70 achieved. Run support for Gio achieved. Keep the line moving.

  5. mick - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:09 AM

    now that some serious hitting!!

  6. Timothy Folk - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:09 AM

No structural damage on haren because he's not hurt he's just no good.. father time is undefeated

  7. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:09 AM

FWIW, I'm thinking Span held up on Rendon's single to make sure it didn't carry all the way out to Parra in right. It was hit very hard.

  8. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:10 AM

Davey needs to learn (and I say this knowing Davey knows more about baseball than I will ever even come close to knowing) that smallball can set up the big inning sometimes. That inning started with a walk, a bunt, a hit and then some solid ABs and a home run.

  9. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:11 AM

"David, it's all elementary my dear Watson, but Span would've dead meat if he had tried to get to third. He did better by rattling Cahill."Agreed 100%

  10. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Fair enough Sec. 3, I did not consider that.

  11. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Gio is looking NASTY. So's the D!!!

  12. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:12 AM

DP…..so you're saying Davey needs to learn to have his pitcher sac bunt after a lead off hitter walks.Really?

  13. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Gosh darn… What a great inning….Yeah, we most definitely need to play more small ball… It does nothing but help… And then sprinkle in the homers…last inning was phenomenal… And a great example of why we should do it more…

  14. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:14 AM

No, NatsJack. I know it was Gio doing it this time. But I think when the offense is so pressed to score runs, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have a position player do it too.

  15. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Harper done after 3 innings in Potomac. Had a pretty eventful day.

  16. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:18 AM

Only negative he was picked off.

  17. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:19 AM

I'm actually happy he was picked off because it made him dive back. Let's him really test the knee.

  18. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Good to see Zuki on base….

  19. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:20 AM

David Proctor, I really think Span would've gotten nailed, but his whole sequence was what I expected all year from Denard. Get on, rattle the pitcher, move along and rattle him some more. Make Cahill worry about the runner more than the batter.Speed kills. Even perceived speed.

  20. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Harper walked after a full count.Noticed the first base coach was an aqaintace of mine.Interesting pitcher for Nats was 34 and Harper wore 32.

  21. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:24 AM

Add on runs are a MUST!

  22. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:26 AM

I am a little disappointed that we didnt score at least 1 run right there….Don't let up….

  23. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:26 AM

Add on runs are a MUST!= #EatFacebut … no second helpings there.

  24. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:27 AM

Good news about Harper… Now to wait and hear how he's doing tomorrow…

  25. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:29 AM

This ump has a big strike zone. That's great news for Gio. He doesn't do well when getting squeezed (but who does).

  26. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:30 AM

I hate how Bob and FP rag on sabermetrics so much.

  27. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Gio has been awesome lately… I hope he gets a win tonight…he deserves 1…

  28. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:32 AM

    DP – Concur

  29. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:35 AM

FP has made no effort to hide his disdain for Moneyball. I lean slightly to one side of the middle on that one.

  30. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:36 AM

Jayson was not running hard to second. He's been hitting though so no complaints.

  31. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:36 AM

Jayson was running gingerly there…. I'm surprised he was safe….#EatFace

  32. Candide - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Okay, need some add-on #EatFace runs.

  33. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Luck was on our side right there….

  34. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:38 AM

    Nice!

  35. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Werth was running just as fast as he needed to. How about Adam?Lets bring 'em home, Desi. Good enough!

  36. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:39 AM

Productive out!!! Way to go Desi….

  37. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:40 AM

    Nice play by Prado.

  38. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:40 AM

"Gio has been awesome lately… I hope he gets a win tonight…he deserves 1…"In a big way.

  39. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Give the hitting coach a raise!!!

  40. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:41 AM

    Seriously re: Prado.LMAO NatsJack!

  41. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:41 AM

    You're killing me, Jack!

  42. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Hahaha… NatsJack – I was a out to say… I'm glad to see Eck not with his face in that dang book! Lol…

  43. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:43 AM

Jack, I'm sure Eck told Desi to get some air under the ball.

  44. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:44 AM

LOL NatsJack. How about an extension? He deserves it!

  45. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:48 AM

    Double play ball now please.

  46. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:48 AM

Joe Seamhead said…FP has made no effort to hide his disdain for Moneyball.————————-'Moneyball' the book/movie or 'moneyball' the notion that you make decisions based on actual analysis rather than eyeball impressions?

  47. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:49 AM

    Need a DP right here , please….

  48. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:50 AM

    Go off speed a Gio/z00k.

  49. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:51 AM

    Off speed junk… They're starving.

  50. Candide - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Love how Gio talks to himself on the mound.

  51. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Uh oh. Out of nowhere, trouble.

  52. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:55 AM

    Pheeeeeeeew

  53. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Great job Gio…. Way to get out of it…

  54. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Good job Gio. He should take the rest of the night off. I didn't realize Gio had thrown so many pitches so often until FP mentioned it.

  55. UnkyD - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Cunegonde and I hatehatehate those Greenberg and Bederman commercials.

  58. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:59 AM

Y'know, Gio with bases loaded is becoming almost relaxing. Has he let a run score in that situation since he pulled it together in the bottom of the first in Pittsburgh?

  59. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:59 AM

    Interesting that Gio is on-deck.

  60. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:59 AM

Christian Garcia pitched one inning (the first) in Syracuse. One hit, two strikeouts, no runs. 18 pitches, 9 strikes.

  61. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:01 AM

    I think Gio's fine…especially with 7-8-9 coming up…

  62. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:03 AM

    Oh, sorry, 8-9-1

  63. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:05 AM

Davey will pull him if he gets in trouble. Don't want to lose this one. :)

  64. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:05 AM

NEW YORK — Livid over Alex Rodriguez's decision to tweet an update on his rehab process, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had a message for the third baseman."You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, [we will]," Cashman told ESPN New York. "Alex should just shut the f— up. That's it. I'm going to call Alex now."Yikes.

  65. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:06 AM

    Whoa!

  66. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:07 AM

I don't like the decision to keep Gio in. Another hit.

  67. Scott Margenau - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:09 AM

Who said this would be the day we played well BEFORE the game started, based on the perceived weak line up???Cheers to u mate, whoever u were :-)

  68. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:09 AM

Rendon learning. Threw to first this time.

  69. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:09 AM

    Nice move Rendon

  70. Eric - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:11 AM

Bravo Gio!!Bullpen, hold it down for him!

  71. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:12 AM

I notice "Harper was not permitted to speak to the press." As it should be.

  72. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:14 AM

Harper has inadvertently created some controversy by speaking before so I'm glad they told him to shut up. I hope they told him a little more politely than Cashman told A-Rod though.

  73. Candide - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:15 AM

  74. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:16 AM

    Drew is wild tonight.

  75. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:17 AM

who cares about the Yankees & especially A-Rod?!

  76. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Mississippi State giving the CWS away; Padres' first-round draft pick Hunter Renfroe with two ugly errors in 3rd (of course starting pitcher made two Es on the same play in the 1st); UCLA up 3-0.

  77. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Well, Scott, I worked late, so I didn't have a chance to voice my happiness that we at least had 3 outfielders in the line up. Now, that said, if Zimm need a night off, personally I'd rather Tracy starting at 3rd then to jack Rendon around. Tracy vs. Lombo at 3rd is a toss up to me. Come on, Drew. Eat some face!

  78. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:20 AM

That's the first time a Rendon error has really hurt us.

  79. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:21 AM

wow! Drew/Rendon, here we go! we still got this tho…kid is learning at 2b but should have had it nonetheless.

  80. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:21 AM

    Oops. Rookie error.

  81. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:24 AM

    don't like Storen's location.

  82. David Proctor - Jun 25, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Alright not too much damage. Drew got the pitch he needed and Rendon just booted it. Could've been much worse.

  83. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:26 AM

Reading online sppears Storen caused a lot of this problem by walking Aaron Hill.Rendon fielding or throwing error?

  84. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:28 AM

    Nothing is ever easy!

  85. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Looks like we bunched our hits that is good, but time for more.

  86. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:29 AM

Should have the bottom of the lineup for Clip and Soriano, I think.

  87. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:30 AM

    Uhm… Storen gave me a heart attack….

  88. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:32 AM

MNF, re. Rendon, fielding E but hey, he didn't let it bother him at the plate!

  89. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:36 AM

Rendon is not a fast man.

  90. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:37 AM

Trent! nobody out, what's up with this guy?!!

  91. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:38 AM

On one hand, Rendon scores if that's anyone but Parra probably. On the other had, it's Jewett's job to know about Parra's arm.

  92. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:38 AM

Idk if that was a good send by Jewitt….

  93. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:39 AM

Saw out at home eondered if Jewitt ill advisedly sent him.

  94. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:40 AM

No, Rendon is not fast. He was fast(er) before the injuries, but lost the speed tool. Jewett should know that–and Parra's arm. Too aggressive.

  95. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:40 AM

I can't stand T Jewitt… He has cost us with his 3rd base coach 'plays'….

  96. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:40 AM

DP, agree, know your OF arms Trent!! bases loaded, 0 outs with Desi coming up…come on! we need all the runs we can get with heart attack Clip coming in.

  97. Scott Margenau - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:42 AM

    Lets go Zim!

  98. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:45 AM

*waits for the Zim haters to come out*

  99. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Pitch 5 was his to hit… Just missed it….

  100. Knoxville Nat - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:47 AM

Isn't there an unwritten rule that says you are not to make the first out at third base or home plate? What was Trent thinking there?

  101. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:47 AM

like ghost said, rolling stones hang over with the wife?

  102. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:47 AM

    Atlanta 3-1 in the 5th.

  103. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:50 AM

Come on Clip, really? I guess he was due. He hasn't given up a HR in forever.

  104. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:50 AM

    Tyler Moore coming back?

  105. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:51 AM

Homer in this situation is actually not much worse than a walk.

  106. Knoxville Nat - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:51 AM

So was that HR by Prado a MASN jinx?

  107. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:51 AM

Yikes, I liked it a lot better when we were leading 6-0.

  108. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:52 AM

    Clippard meatball served to Prado.

  109. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:52 AM

Agreed, William. Reminds me of that saying that a home run kills a rally. It keeps the bases clean at least.

  110. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:53 AM

    That is fine.

  111. Timothy Folk - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:54 AM

    One more inning

  112. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:54 AM

Well, Soriano will have at least a 2-run lead. Be nice to add on, guys!

  113. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:54 AM

Soriano will be facing 1-2-3. Need to keep the bases clean before Goldschmidt.

  114. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:55 AM

I don't have anything positive to say about T Clippard… So I won't say anything…We need 3 more outs… But I want some insurance runs!!!!!

  115. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:56 AM

    KC tied it up.

  119. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Looking at Clip's number he has had a good season

  120. Knoxville Nat - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:58 AM

MrsB, Clippard has been pitching pretty well of late and Prado was due at some point against him.

  121. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Roger is 1/4 tonight and set up that big inning I thought. Not great, but at least he's not an automatic out like he was earlier in the season.

  122. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:00 AM

Oooh mama! I like that gift!

  131. David Proctor - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:01 AM

Rendon hit that ball extremely hard. Bad luck there–but he still has a 2-4 night. Dude is unbelievable (offensively).

  132. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:01 AM

Listening now. C and D say we received a gift back.Thet said Rendon almost had another hit. Was it close?

  133. MrsB loves the Nats - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Knox – I'm not a T Clippard fan at all… Haven't ever really been one… I root for him (by default) since he is on the Nats team but I'm not a fan….

  134. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:04 AM

Tailing ball to RF, MNF, but overall a routine out.

  135. NatsLady - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:04 AM

In his last 8.2 innings (including this one), Clip has given up exactly one run. (Eight appearances). That's really not bad…

  136. paul brandt - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:05 AM

MNF, right fielder made a running catch but wasn't like he had to dive…good solid hit and a decent to good catch.

    Agreed, NL.

Jeez, I thought that ball was gone. Soriano loves to give up long flyouts.

  141. Joe Seamhead - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:08 AM

I sure like having an outfielder playing left field.
