Game 79: Nats at Mets

Jun 28, 2013, 7:45 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

NEW YORK — Good afternoon from Citi Field, where tonight the Nationals open a weekend series against the Mets, beginning with an awfully tough matchup against the dynamic Matt Harvey.

The Nats have already gotten a good look at Harvey this season; he beat Stephen Strasburg with an electric performance here back in April. So they know they've got their work cut out for them tonight. They can only hope Ross Detwiler is up to the challenge himself after some recent shaky outings.

Still waiting on the Nationals' lineup, which I don't believe will include Bryce Harper. Though I suppose you never know…

Updates to come…

Heavy storm right now in Shaw. If they were playing here, they wouldn't be playing.

  2. Tcostant - Jun 28, 2013 at 7:59 PM

I was reading an article in the NY Post (I think it was there or could have been the Daily News) a few days ago and it basicly said that the Mets have three "real" major league players. The are has been or never was guys.Look at Eric Young, cut by the Rockies starting for the Mets. Buck is slowing down.I use to be a Mets fan before the Nationals came to town, glad I'm not right now…

With the Nats pathetic offense, Harvey should have a field day tonight.

  6. phil dunton - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:07 PM

While nobody is looking, the Marlins and the Mets have been playing the best baseball in the NL East recently.

  7. Eric - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:29 PM

I'm strangely excited and confident about this game. For better and worse, this feeling has historically had no correlation with whether or not we win or lose…

  8. Kirbs - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:40 PM

    Two runs can win it….just…two…runs….

  9. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:42 PM

Haha!!!! Hope we see fierce WBC Det tonight. And I am sick and tired of people anointing these barely experienced guys as hall of famers. This guy needs to be brought down a peg. You know it will happen. None of these guys can keep it up forever. Medlin last year, even Stras– give it time. They are good, but not perfect. Time for a reminder that he is human.

  10. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:46 PM

    Any news on Harper's availability

  11. JD - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Swami, This guy is the real deal. I never thought Medlen was the next Maddux but Harvey has been the co best pitcher in the league this year and it's no fluke.

  12. Eric - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Check out Maddux' line from this game:2.1 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 0BB, 2 SO, 1HRIt can happen to anyone!

  13. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Harvey is absolutely the real deal–but he will get blown up eventually. It hasn't happened yet, but it will.

  14. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Agreed- even Verlander has off nights. Seems like every year there is the next, newest, anointed pitcher of the season. Adjustments get made. He will still be good, just not as good as he seems to be now. Flavor of the month.

  15. JD - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:09 PM

David, Everyone does including the best hall of famers and including our 3 aces. The main point is that on any given night he is likely to be very hard to beat.

  16. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:14 PM

But then, we find struggling veterans, retreads and minor league call ups hard to beat, so this will be different how??

  17. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Zack Wheeler is very good too but young.

  18. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:30 PM

It's the Mets version of stras/Zimm perhaps. (Harvey/Wheeler)

  19. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:34 PM

Dan Kolko ‏@masnKolko 28sDavey says Bryce Harper will hit indoors at Bowie today. Will get today off, play tomorrow with Harrisburg. Could still rejoin #Nats MondayRamos caught 3 innings today in the GCL.

  20. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:37 PM

Let's face it folks, it's not just that the offense is bad— there are just amazing pitchers out there. Across MLB, pitching is good- offense is down. Start your list of really good pitchers and see how long it gets in a hurry. Add to that the outstanding defense like we have just seen. We did, however just take a series from a first place team. And we came close to sweeping. It is tough to face these pitchers might after night. We seem to have the worst time with Gee, though.

  21. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Amanda Comak ‏@acomak 34sDavey said he expects Taylor Jordan to get at least 2-3 starts, a few chances to show what he's got.Interesting.

  22. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Trevor Bauer getting plastered in the first inning in Chicago. They have a SS playing LF which doesn't help. I didn't realize he always pitches from the stretch.

  23. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Trevour Bauer has thrown 50 pitches in the first inning for the Indians…

  24. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:51 PM

2-3 good starts is what Davey needs.

  25. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:51 PM

FWIW, a commenter in an MLBTR article said he heard directly from Larry Baer the Giants were close to closing a deal for Nolasco.

  27. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:52 PM

And he's out. He lasted .2 innings. Gave up 5 runs, threw 50 pitches. And the bases are still loaded.

  28. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:52 PM

He has an unorthodox warm up, pitches from the stretch and has some other interesting habits. Some teams apparently did not want to work with him unless he changed.

  29. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:52 PM

NatsLady, what did I say about Bauer on Wednesday. Brought up too soon.

Just as well on Harper if it's like this in NY. Pouring again. This weather should hit up there in a couple of hours. Don't need the Kid slipping and sliding.

  32. Jasoneducator - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Our old friend Cole Kimball just took the mound for Syracuse. Hope he can pitch well and get himself back in the mix.

  33. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Sofa. LOL. Buster Posey said yesterday the Dodgers were getting him (Nolasco, I mean.) I expect we are not in the bidding…Ghost, I hope we are not doing the same with Jordan–bringing him up too soon.

  34. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Willy Ray is playing ball again in Florida!!!! Yay!! Take it easy, though, big guy!

  35. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Ramos is expected back this Thursday, Swami. We are very close to being healthy. Until someone else goes down.

  36. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Who is on your " most likely to go on the DL" list?? My number one candidate is Jayson Werth for sure with the classic groin injury.

  37. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:05 PM

I'd say Werth, but Werth actually got around pretty well yesterday. He looked MUCH better than he did the two prior days.

  38. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:10 PM

You know, I thought so. Can you get a magical cortisone shot in that area? Does it just improve like that? I have noticed that he is not selling out on any catches.

  39. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:16 PM

swami, I vote for Det. He hasn't had a really solid start since he came back. It took him longer than I expected to come back and I wonder if he's completely healed. It seems to have been another one of those situations where he was going to try to "work through" it, then he doesn't make his next start, then he's on the DL, etc. etc. Didn't RZimm's take a lot longer? Oblique, I mean. Well, how do you like that? Cleveland tied it up.

  40. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:22 PM

NatsLady- could very well be- and yes, obliques are long. Remember Desi? I love it when Det has that killer mentality. But if he is being careful or favoring something then his mechanics will be off. Maybe playing with it earlier did mess with his mechanics. He can be so Ana Ing when he is on. I want to see that again.

  41. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:23 PM

    That would be * amazing*.

  42. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:23 PM

Garcia came in, they had no chance. Boy does he fool them.

  43. Eric - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Will be interesting to see how the Braves fare against the DBacks…

  44. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:29 PM

DBags a first place team. Good for us to get two of three- hate losing in extras, though, especially at home.

  45. NatsFanSinceStart - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Did we bring Moore back up just to sit — again? And to sit behind Bernadina? I don't get it.I don't get a lot of this these guys are doing these days.

  46. NatsFanSinceStart - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:32 PM

It will be great to get Ramos back and of course Harper. Let the offense begin!! and if not, let the excuses stop!

  47. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:32 PM

I wonder if old town Alexandria will wash away tonight along with Nats Park….line stalled over there now.Hopefully storms will die down a little in CitiField since the game must go on.

  48. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Moore barreled up a ball in each of the last two nights. Maybe it's a left / right thing or the size of the outfield?

  49. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Once again feeling guilty that we totally missed all the weather. Feeling bad for those on the road right now.

  50. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:36 PM

It might be ok in Shaw, Swami, but the Nats bowl is probably under water right now

  51. baseballswami - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Been watching the radar– good thing the Nats are not here. But the PNats got cancelled up in Wilmington. Seriously- dry as a bone south of Manassas.

  52. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:40 PM

sweet Bryce and Neil Diamond coming to the Park on the fourth of July. There will be blood but no $1 hotdogs except in Coney Island for Joey Chestnutt

  53. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:40 PM

oh, yeah..couch is in Shaw…Swami is in the confederacy

  54. Eric - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:41 PM

    College Park got *nailed*

  55. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:44 PM

yes, that's where I work… The weather center got flooded…fun seeing a bunch of meteorologists running barefoot thru the rivers. No one saw our roof waterfall working so fast.

  56. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Mark Zuckerman ‏@ZuckermanCSN 56sInteresting that Wei-Yin Chen in making rehab start tomorrow for Bowie. So Bryce Harper will get ABs vs. a big-league arm. #Nats #OriolesThat's good

Where in CP jeffwx? I work at the northwest corner of the UMD campus.

  60. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:55 PM

NatsLady, the Nats handled Karns well. These games are crucial. Taylor has better stuff but this is the MLB.

  61. Just wonderin' - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:56 PM

Brewer's minor league club giving away guns (two rifles and a pistol) on July 3 in Huntsville, AL — 2nd Amendment Night promotion — incredible.http://whnt.com/2013/06/28/stars-to-host-second-amendment-night/

  62. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:57 PM

  65. Eric - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:06 PM

    Gun give away, eh. Wow…

  68. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Chiefs also having a 2nd amendment night–bring your NRA membership card. I kid you not.

  69. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Are the Chiefs giving away free guns though?

  70. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Which Z'man's batting stats did they put on the scoreboard?

  71. Knoxville Nat - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:25 PM

You all have something against the second amendment?

  72. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Well…I'll defer comment on the second amendment. I have a problem with giving away free guns though.

  73. jeffwx - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:27 PM

nice area…Franklins in Hyattsville often has good Nats pub

  74. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:28 PM

So…after the White Sox went up 5-0 on Cleveland because of Bauer's awful start, the Indians have not only come back…they lead 14-5.

DP, free guns, huh…hate to be the home plate ump at the Chiefs game!

  77. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:32 PM

Desi the only Nat with more than one hit off Harvey. Makes sense. Desi likes the fastball.

  78. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Years ago I worked for a company with headquarters in NY and a plant in LA. At the plant they gave guns away as incentives. I admit, my urban heart was totally shocked but it was explained to me that it didn't mean anything more than giving away bowling balls. I don't have a problem with bowling balls…

  79. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:36 PM

    Ross, don't give bases away!!!!

  80. phil dunton - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:37 PM

I fear this evening is not going to be kind to the Nationals. Stay tuned though, we might see a no hitter!

  81. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:39 PM

Werth isn't 100%, but he's moving way better than he was 2 days ago. He was moving fairly well yesterday too.

  82. Nattering Nat - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:45 PM

As a died-in-the-wool (and cotton, silk and cashmere) Nats fan, I can say in all honesty anyone who thinks anyone other than Matt Harvey will start the ASG for the NL at Citifield is living in a world I don't recognize. (Now let's hope that reverse psychology kicks in.)

  83. paul brandt - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:48 PM

with this rain & slick field, i for one am glad harp ain't on it and would prefer at some point, werth ain't on it either.

  84. paul brandt - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:50 PM

nice AB Det, get that pitch count up.

  85. David Proctor - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:51 PM

AB of the night by Det.

  86. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Detwiler makes up 25% of the pitches thrown by Matt Harvey. That's a nice approach.

  87. paul brandt - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:57 PM

that was one happy foul ball catching fan! good for him.

  88. Eric - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:58 PM

jeff – "nice area…Franklins in Hyattsville often has good Nats pub"Yeah? I don't go there too often these days…will have to check that out.As for 2A, I am glad we have the right. With any luck some NRA member's who are felons will show up for free guns. Only 2/3s of this paragraph is on he level.

  89. NatsLady - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:59 PM

Ross doesn't look like Harvey but he is getting the job done so far.

  90. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:03 AM

Oh yeah, jeff, the DC Brau brewery is just down Bladensburg Road. Fun place to go on a Saturday. As for the game, it seems like Det is doing quite well so far! Just now getting to watching, though; was listening while taking a walk with my son. It's really crazy how many sinkers Det throws…

  91. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:03 AM

    Robbery by Byrd on Rendon.

  92. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:03 AM

  94. Knoxville Nat - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:04 AM

  95. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:04 AM

as long as we (me) are on the subject of foul balls, i was at the 1995 (i think it was 95) ASG in old Veterans stadium in Philly and me & my buddy caught three foul balls off the bat…it was un-real, we were down the R field line and had multiple Phillies fans tell us they have been to games for 30 years and never caught a one…for me & my buddy, it was our first time there and we got three and trust me, we told them that too…very memorable…still have the one i caught.

  96. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:04 AM

We are going to get robbed by the METS D now???????

  99. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Last night was the unluckiest BABIP the Nats have had all year. Keep making contact Nats, the luck will turn!

  100. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Er…maybe not."Eric, I like my beers cold."???You can get 'em cold at the brewery. On tap.

  101. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:06 AM

  102. Just wonderin' - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:08 AM

So, is that no hitter Harvey has going? Wouldn't want to jinx it if it were. That's why I'm asking.

  103. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:09 AM

All the beat reporters have done their job in jinxing him.

  104. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:10 AM

    That…was not ideal.

  105. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:11 AM

sorry but ALR has to have that.

  106. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Oh, turtles. Desi hasn't made an error in how long?????? It's sopping wet.

  107. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:12 AM

That is Desi's first error in 59 games. And I don't think he deserves the error for that.

  108. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:12 AM

PB, I agree, it was right in his glove. Also, Ryan did not react quickly on the double. He might not have gotten it, but he was just slow.

  109. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Well he deserves it for the throw for sure. So i guess it doesn't matter.

  110. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Channel 9 has moved over to a weather warning for southern MD. I blame them.

  111. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Marlon Byrd advances from second to third on a double…

  112. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Difference so far is the Nats not making the fielding plays, RZim, Desi, etc.

  113. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:15 AM

OK, back to the game, everyone can relax now…heh

  114. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:16 AM

NL, yep, agree on Zim, it was hard hit, but just knock it down…need to keep this inning to 2 or less.

"Janus, Topper Shutt is the man!! why the hate?"I'm guessing cuz he's the one who was yapping during the weather alert interruption when the run scored ;)

  124. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

    YES! DET!!!

  125. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

Great job getting out of the jam. But we need a hit before we can worry about scoring.

  126. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

OK, Ross did GREAT. Now get him some runs!!!!

  127. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

there you go Det, nice!! come on nats bats!!

  128. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

All considered, that was a nice containment job by Detwiler. Again, Mets making the tough plays, RZim and Desi and Werth didn't. 1 run given up, nice outcome.

  129. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

    Excellent job by Ross.

  130. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:23 AM

    eric/steal/not eat/face, i figured as much.

  131. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:23 AM

    2 doubles, a 2 base error and a walk = 1 run?

  132. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:25 AM

Rosenbaum has given up 5 earned in 3 innings. And the Chiefs are getting nada against this CY Young with his 6++ ERA. Danny hasn't struck out, though.

  133. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:27 AM

Byrd is the dude my buddies and I happy-heckled to a great game back in 06 or whatever season it was he was with us.Maybe he thought of us tonight when he stopped at third ;)

  134. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:28 AM

You see that there that Harvey did to Werth? That is what Garcia was doing (lesser hitters, I know).

  135. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:29 AM

    Desi. My hero!

  136. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:29 AM

    YES!!!!!!!!!!

  137. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:29 AM

    Desi. Whew.

  138. Section 135 - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:29 AM

    Desi!!!

  139. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:29 AM

see you later & there goes the no hitter…DESI

  140. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:30 AM

Desi making up for his error.

  141. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:39 AM

LOL, Bernadina "didn't get the best jump" gets ball–think I've heard that before.

  142. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:39 AM

Roger Bernadina: the king of making the most routine play into a highlight reel.

  143. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:41 AM

    DW helped us there

  144. waddu eye no - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:43 AM

would bryce have made that throw to the plate?

  145. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:43 AM

Marlon Byrd has killed us this year.

  146. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:44 AM

waddu, pretty good throw I thought.

  147. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Harper has no chance on the first play. He probably gets Byrd at the plate though.

  148. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:44 AM

now on that one, waddu, yea, i think bryce gets him but who knows.

  149. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:45 AM

Marlon Byrd on offense, defense and baserunning showing the Nats something.

  150. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:45 AM

I don't know about the first one, but Bryce would have definitely gotten the second one. Detwiler suddenly very hittable.

  151. Section 135 - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:45 AM

Byrd, who was suspended last year for PED's is having a comeback season- what a joke.

  152. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:45 AM

Poor pitch location by Ross. It's all on him.

  153. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:46 AM

ghost, always have liked Marlon as a hitter.

  154. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:46 AM

Come on, Det! Focus. Bernadina's throw was awful. You get your catcher hurt throwing in that high.

  155. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:47 AM

The Indians-White Sox game is 18-10. And it's the first game of a doubleheader.

  156. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:48 AM

We need to get Harvey out of the game. Their bullpen is awful

  157. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Yeah, after tonight I'm thinking Det just isn't quite 100% yet. Seemed like the top of the 4th required his reserves and he couldn't quite bring his game in the 5th.

  158. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:52 AM

That curve to Lombo was ***NASTY***

  159. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:52 AM

19-10. It's the top of the 8th and they;ve been playing 3.5 hours already.

  160. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:52 AM

here comes a Span special – ground ball to 1b if he even hits it.

  161. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:52 AM

    Yes!!!!

  162. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Span with his patented triple!!!! I take back everything I ever said!!!

  163. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:53 AM

    Way to go, Denard!

  164. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:53 AM

paul brandt, you did it, you are an idiot, love, paul brandt

  165. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:55 AM

Well, Harvey took Rendon to school. Learn up, kid.

  166. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:55 AM

give Harvey credit, he's pitched well.

  167. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Harvey is due to get lit up eventually–unfortunately it's not tonight.I'm just happy we're not being no-hit.

  168. Secret wasian man - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:57 AM

I don't know what is worse. watching the Nats trying to hit or going 6 straight innings listening to FP go ON and ONNNNNNNNNNNN about Matt Harvey. Matt Harvey, Paul Harvey, Lee Harvey Oswalt, it doesn't matter. Its the METS CMON!!

  169. baseballswami - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:57 AM

You have to admit that these circumstances have been extremely stressful tonight. Those five innings must have seemed like ten. Let's not forget how much Det had to put into that bases loaded jam. Sometimes it's not the pitches or innings, it's the stress involved. The atmosphere, the weather, the opposing pitcher, paltry offense — all very stressful. I don't think he is 100 % yet either, though. He is certainly not built back up stamina wise. He was out a lot longer than Stras.

  170. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:57 AM

Rendon goes down. Actually, it's more like Harvey is flat out putting us down, but I really wish Anthony could've got us one back there. Nuts.

  171. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:57 AM

Whew, the world has not gone crazy. Danny struck out swinging.

  172. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Surprised they're using Ohlendorf tonight and not tomorrow when Jordan is pitching.

  173. Secret wasian man - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:01 AM

back below .500 40 losses. not to allstar break yet. What a long disappointing season. UGHHHHH

  174. baseballswami - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:02 AM

    Oh, just get over it!

  175. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Naw, he'll used Stammen tomorrow if Jordan gets in trouble. Davey wants to win tomorrow and Sunday. He doesn't trust Ohlendorf–YET.

  176. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:04 AM

I'm not seeing it as a disappointing season. It is a long season and there is a lot of ball to play. Maybe even tonight.

  177. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:05 AM

Casper Wells, the outfielder, is pitching in the Sox-Indians game now. 400th pitch is about to be thrown. 19-10 score now.

  178. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:06 AM

I don't think this is a disappointing season at all. Our boys are gritting it out, winning games they have no business winnning. Rizzo/Davey forced to clean out all the excess like Henry/Duke/Espinosa and run a mean ship. You never know who is going to pitch the next game, who will come through, who will stub their toe. I'm loving it. A lot better this way than cruising until August and then folding.

  179. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:06 AM

Det was not that bad, it has been our offense that has been bad. Yes, Harvey is a good pitcher but come on, make adjustments, get his pitch count up, work the counts, get some walks, make things happen all known as small ball Davey, that is how we can get back into this game…best AB of the night was Det.p.s. that a boy Zim

  180. baseballswami - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:06 AM

You know, I was thinking philosophically. That's what you do when your team is struggling. I heard Strassie saying how much he had learned this season, I heard Tyler Moore saying the same thing. Last year everything just happened, things worked. This year adversity is all around. But our team is young and I really feel that they are learning and developing more now. If this team is going to move forward and be a factor in the coming years then they need to keep developing and toughening up. I think that is what is happening and I think that is why it is happening.

  181. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:07 AM

Wow, a leadoff man aboard for the Nats!

  182. NatsJack in Florida - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:07 AM

Joe…. forgive them… they are misplaced Redskin fans and don't relate to the marathon that is a baseball season.Like I've said, July is our "move" month.

  183. baseballswami - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:08 AM

Nats Lady and Paul — I am on your page.

  184. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:11 AM

For weeks on end last year we had exactly the same line up. Anyone could have managed the team. Now you have to see if Davey can still do it. We get to see what mid-season corrections Rizzo will or will not make.

  185. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:11 AM

Visions of game 4. Similar at bat, just as little hope…

  186. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:13 AM

Jack, they keep saying that they "are done with this team." Oh that it were so.

  187. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:14 AM

    Harvey is da stuff.

  188. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:14 AM

    …different outcome

  189. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:15 AM

    THey are worried about Desi….

  190. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:15 AM

good battle by Werth, glass half full & i bet the guy is 80%, if that…team mates see that and will remember it in September & October.

  191. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:16 AM

Harvey afraid of Desmond. At least we have someone opposing pitchers fear (before Harper comes back).

  192. David Proctor - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:17 AM

I like swinging 3-0 there. Shark isn't going to do anything. Desmond was our best shot, 3-0 is usually a good pitch to hit. He just missed it.

  193. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:17 AM

I don't like swinging on 3-0 even if he had the green light. Go ahead and let him walk you.

  194. paul brandt - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:17 AM

ok, sorry but i have a problem with desi swinging on a 3-0 count down 2.

  195. NatsLady - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:17 AM

    Ha–opposite opinions!!!

  196. JaneB - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:20 AM

Harvey is as advertised, ain't he?

  197. JaneB - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:21 AM

PS I like swami's train of thought. And Natsjack, too.

  198. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:22 AM

You can knock Harvey out of the game. Take the ball Desi and work the 3-1 and hopefully you get a mistake pitch.

  199. Eric - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:22 AM

"Harvey is as advertised, ain't he?"He's ridiculous…seriously. I forgot he could get up to 97.

  200. Joe Seamhead - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:23 AM

I am duly impressed with him, Jane.
