Game 86: Padres at Nats

Jul 5, 2013, 8:13 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

Davey Johnson had no good reason for making the change to his lineup that he did yesterday – swapping Ian Desmond and Jayson Werth – but obviously the new look worked for the Nationals, who scored eight runs to beat the Brewers. And Davey isn't about to mess with a good thing and make another change now.

Really, though, lineup construction is less about who hits where and more about who is hitting at all. So the best hope for the Nationals' run-scoring abilities moving forward is the simple fact they've got a complete, healthy lineup in place (including Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos) for the first time since mid-April.

That lineup will try to keep things going tonight against the Padres, who send hard-throwing right-handed Andrew Cashner to the mound. Gio Gonzalez, who has been fantastic lately, gets the ball for the Nats, trying to put his team two games over the .500 mark again.

Updates to come…

I thought Ramos was catching. Wonder why the switch. Gio wanted Zook or Ramos was a little tired? I hope that's all it is.

  2. realdealnats - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:20 PM

NL–I'd say they are going to handle Ramos with kid gloves for a couple weeks here. Make sure that hammy stays nice and stretched without barking or worse.

  3. realdealnats - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:22 PM

I actually liked it when they were rotating, it seemed to get the best from both at the plate. I wouldn't mind seeing this for a while and real gradually switch over.

  4. Section 222 - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:22 PM

Following up on the last thread, here's another gymnast throwing a first pitch. Apparently it's in Japan because the actual pitcher who takes the mound when she's done is none other than Yu Darvish!

  5. MicheleS - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:22 PM

NL.. weird, Julie Alexandria tweeted out the picture and it has Ramos as the C.

Corrected copy.On another lineup up note, I got a fever and the only prescription is more Ryan Zimmerman. :-)Will be going to the P-Nats game tonight but will also DVR this game. Go, GIO! Go, NATS!!

  8. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Cashner is legitimately good. Hope we can get to him. We've got Gio, Strasburg and JZimm in this series. Padres are a pesky team, but if we don't win at least 2/3, it'll be a disappointment.

  9. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:27 PM

Ramos is catching. That's a typo in this article.

  10. NatsLady - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:29 PM

WaPo thinks it's Ramos. Guess we'll find out.

  11. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:30 PM

It's Ramos, the Nats tweeted out the lineup. It has Ramos in there.

  12. Section 222 - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:30 PM

Must have been so used to typing Suzuki from the previous 40 or so games.

  13. natsfan1a - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Mark's Tweeter feed at top right also says same lineup as yesterday.

  14. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:39 PM

Dan Kolko โ€@masnKolko 27s Davey said he expects Jordan Zimmermann and Ian Desmond to be named to All-Star team.

  15. Doc - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:39 PM

This is no time to rest The Buffalo. This is a time for another of his 3-Run HR's!!!!

  16. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Adam Kilgore โ€@AdamKilgoreWP now Ryan Mattheus threw off a mound today. Davey said everybody was impressed. Could be on rehab assignment in 10 days.

  17. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:43 PM

I like Gio/Zook together… But I'm fine with Ramos getting out there… Hopefully, this rest will help Zook as I liked it when DJ did the switcheroo between the 2 catchers…With that said, I'm sincerely and seriously, hoping we got at least 7-3 before the AS game… I like our chances against the Padres… Lets Go Nats!!!!

  18. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:43 PM

The bullpen is interesting right now. Storen has an ERA of over 5. Mattheus will be back. Presumably, Garcia will be in there at some point. Who leaves? Abad and Krol have both been very good.

  19. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:44 PM

I think Suzuki catches JZimm tomorrow. They seem to be perfect together (which is interesting since they were awful together last year).

  20. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:44 PM

what is that more next to RZ?

  21. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:44 PM

I keep forgetting about Mattheus… Probably becuz I was so livid when I found out him breaking his hand wasnt a joke….Wow, we've got some decisions for the BP… Who goes back down I wonder… I don't want Abad nor Krol to go back…Can they send T Moore back down, instead? Becuz he seriously needs to play every day…

  22. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:52 PM

MrsB, I expect a trade from the bullpen and wouldn't be surprised for teams that need a closer if Storen isn't the one to go.

  23. NCNatsie - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:54 PM

Faraz Shaikh said, "what is that more next to RZ?"Apparently it has something to do with 1a's fever.

  24. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Do you think a team would offer anything of any value at all for Storen? And why would they make him their closer when he boasts a 5+ ERA. I understand he did better in that role, but that's a risk to assume he'll go back to being great just because he's in the 9th inning.

  25. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 5, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Samardzija getting knocked around Wrigley by the Pirates. 7 hits with 1 out in the 3rd.

  26. Nats 128 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:01 PM

"Ghost Of Steve M. said… MrsB, I expect a trade from the bullpen and wouldn't be surprised for teams that need a closer if Storen isn't the one to go."I dont see it unless Rizzo got a sizeable prospect in return.

  27. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Maybe if you package Espinosa and Storen, two underachieving but very high upside guys together…you get something of at least a little value? I still doubt it, to be honest.

  28. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:03 PM

David, teams do it because they are desperate. Look no further than the Boston Red Sox. I agree with Nats128 that you only do it if the return is a good prospect.

  29. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:04 PM

David, Espinosa is worth a low level prospect and not worth trading. Espi is more valuable this team as a shortstop if anything happened to Desi.

  30. Section 222 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:08 PM

I seriously doubt any team is desperate enough to make Drew Storen their closer in his current funk. If he can't get it together, he'll have to join Espi in the minors until he does. Rizzo won't want to trade him with his value in a valley.

  31. NCNatsie - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:16 PM

222, I would think it has to do with what GM's around baseball perceive his problem to be. That perception may be quite different from what we've all been speculating on these past few days. And Rizzo might be able to talk to them frankly about it, which he can't do to us.Of course, knowing his great respect for us, he probably would tell us the truth if he could do so in private, but since anybody can lurk on a blog…

  32. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:19 PM

NCNatsie, that is correct. Other GMs believe they can change a player and it usually begins with the change of scenery.Rizzo is probably already receiving phone calls but he won't let him go for garbage and the same goes for Espi.

  33. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Look no further than Kevin Gregg. He ended up just under 5 ERA last year and now he's a possible All Star.Storen is young and controlable.

  34. Section 222 - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Sure, and as an offseason acquisition, I can easily see a team wanting him. But mid-season, with his head and his mechanics who knows where, to trade for him, and make him the closer? Not gonna happen. Would a team take him for nothing and put him in its bullpen somewhere? Sure. But not as closer. But Rizzo won't take nothing anyway, as you say.

  35. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:31 PM

On June 1 before beating the Nats, Tim Hudson had a 5.37 ERA.He will be 38 years old in a week from Sunday. Do you think he has any value? He ERA is now 4.22

  36. A DC Wonk - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:44 PM

I just want to re-interate "Wonk's way to .600 baseball"Win 2/3 when the big three are pitchingWin 1/2 when the other two are pitchingThat is close to what's happened over the last 15 games (once we won 3/3 and 0/2). So, we've been .600 over the last 15 games. So, while most thing of winning "series", I'm trying to win all the "Wonk series".Today's the first game of the next Wonk Series.

  37. A DC Wonk - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Ghost Of Steve M. said… Look no further than Kevin Gregg. He ended up just under 5 ERA last year and now he's a possible All Star. Storen is young and controlable.Totally. He's only 25, not too expensive, and in our control for a while. The fact that he went 17 consecutive appearances with just one earned run shows that he's got great upside.

  38. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:53 PM

I like "re-interate." It sounds like what you try when you can't get a word in edgewise. That, or reburying someone.

  39. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 5, 2013 at 9:54 PM

Exactly Wonk. He was a closer before the Nats got Soriano.

  40. A DC Wonk - Jul 5, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Sec. 3, My Sofa said… I like "re-interate." It sounds like what you try when you can't get a word in edgewise.Yeah . . . well, yeah, sometimes that happens to me ;-)(nice catch!)

  41. MicheleS - Jul 5, 2013 at 10:19 PM

Decided to skip tonight's game, feel like a wrung out dish rag after the last few days.GYFNG! hope Ramos continues his comeback, Bryce get's back on track, Gio stays calm, and keep the line moving boys!

  42. Mark Zuckerman - Jul 5, 2013 at 10:40 PM

Sorry guys, just realized I mistakenly had Suzuki catching instead of Ramos. Force of habit on my part, I guess. Apologies for the confusion.

  43. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 10:42 PM

I feel Storen will go at least 10 appearances before we fuss at him again.

  44. A DC Wonk - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Reminds me in the first week how many people wanted to dump Soriano, and criticized Rizzo for that acquisition.

  45. MicheleS - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:14 PM

I hope Wilson is channeling the Gio Whisperer tonight

  46. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:15 PM

Going to be a good series. A sweep by the Nats will put this team right back in the hunt and ready to make a move.

  47. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Pdres have hit terrible, and Gio falling behind batte4s is giving them confidence. Throw strikes.

  48. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Gio can't throw strikes. Suzuki should get in his face in the dugout.

  49. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Gio will settle down next inning – just needs to get out of this one — he will

We are going to score a lot tonight!

  53. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:21 PM

Gio's first innings are pften his worse. 30 pitches way too many. Not sure what his preparation regiment is, but seems iyt takes an inning to get ready.

  54. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:23 PM

    Please drag bunt Span

  55. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Not the best first inning in the world…

  56. Knoxville Nat - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:26 PM

30 pitches in the first inning, ugh! Even with some improvement at that rate he is not likely to get past the sixth inning.

  57. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Kashner easily out pitched Gio. 8 pitches, tree soft grounders. Not a good start offensively or defensely.

  58. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:28 PM

    I can believe that.

  59. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:29 PM

All three hitters have all been 0 fors.

  60. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Com on Gio, we can't afford to punk out on a team that has not neen httin in a week.

  61. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Oh Yeah. Gio is completely warm now. He doesn't get into a groove until he's sweating. Smooth sailing from here on.

  62. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:36 PM

Don't fret it, Manassas: tonight is really gonna go the Nats way

  63. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:38 PM

Took him 7 batters to warm up.Time to start hitting Kashner. In San Diego ony Zim hit him very well as I remember.

"In San Diego ony Zim hit him very well as I remember."Seems you remembered well. He hit that ball hard.

  65. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Wow, I thought that was a home run off the bat by Adam. Didn't go anywhere.

Yep. Rendon patient. Good. Kinda like that kid now. Had a bad impression when I saw him at Potomac

  70. David Proctor - Jul 5, 2013 at 11:51 PM

Really BigCat? Why? Just curious because I've heard great things about Rendon since before he was drafted.

Great play Rendon.never saw that DP coming

  96. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Gio is getting hit extremely hard. He may not be long for this game.

  97. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Just about to post that I'd feel better if Gii could get some easy contact outs just before thatDP. NICE!And now Headly goes yard. Whew!

  98. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:12 AM

    4.70 add on more

  105. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:19 AM

I have a theory, but would like to hear others. When there is a large crowd, why is there always a few sections in the lower section (not the Lexus section) thst are empty of about 200-300 seats together?

  106. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Those people are probably inside the nice air-conditioned club watching the game, instead of out in the heat. I'd prefer to be out there super close, but alas. I can't afford those seats.

  107. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:20 AM

What a turnaround. After the first inning I was giving Cashner 7 innings and Gio maybe 5.1, if Gio could get his pitch count down.

First time poster though I have read the comments for a very long time so I feel like I know all you guys haha. But boy is it great to see Wilson back. Not that I have anything against Kurt but Wilson just deserves this with all he has been through

  114. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:34 AM

Can we get a 1-2-3 inning Gio? I love what I'm seeing from the offense, not so much from the pitching today.

  115. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:38 AM

I'll be happy if Gio goes 5 at this rate…

  116. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Could we throw a few strikes please.Same guy he K in second, he walks ob 4 pitches.Makes no sense.

  118. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:41 AM

  125. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Well the more runs we get, the longer we can afford to keep Gio in.

  126. mick - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Unknown said…Ah, Vida Blue. There's a name from the past.Went to Opening Day '71 expecting to see Denny Mclain pitch the game (we bought tickets not too long after the trade) but ol' Bob Short pitched Dick Bosman and garnered another good crowd when he pitched against the White Sox a few days later.Against a great Vida Blue, the Seantors won 8-0 on eight hits. I think that was the year he won the Cy Young.Your right, McClain pitched his opener verse Chisox ona Friday night…I was there…Denny went 9 innings and won 5-4 on a walk off pinch hit homer by ex White Sox Tommy McCraw in the bottom of 9th.Blue won 17 ina row after the opening day loss verse Senators and was 17-3 at all star break

  127. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Gio will need 120 pitches to get through 6 unless something really strange haopens.

  128. mick - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Ramos is simply a beast right now!

  129. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Werth finally makes an out, but still brings in a run. I'll take it.

  130. mick - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:54 AM

Senators started off 12-8 and then lost 4 in row at home verse Chisox that year and never recovered…remember it like last week

  131. mick - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:55 AM

maybe this is where Ohlendorf can get some innings if Gio's count gets too high

  132. mick - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Jayson's at bat in 2nd is what got this rolling…seems like he is really seeing the ball well

  133. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:57 AM

Gio will need 120 pitches to get through 6 unless something really strange haopens.Which is why I'd be surprised if he makes it through 6.

  134. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:57 AM

Gio is really scaring me. They're hitting everything HARD. 6 run lead makes it easier, but still. Don't want one of those games where they keep chipping away.

  135. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 6, 2013 at 12:59 AM

and this team isn't even hot yet – I do believe are ascent has already begun. It's going to be a pleasurable second half. and to think Harper hasn't gotten going yet.

  136. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:00 AM

That was a better inning despite the almost-homer. Gio might last six after all.

  137. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:01 AM

Would someone explain to me how the Brewers managed to hold this lineup to 1 run over two games? Really, is the difference all attributed to Ramos?

  138. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:01 AM

Reading the previous posts, a lot of people were writing Gio off for the night, it seems. Boy, were you ever wrong !!

  139. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:01 AM

Small sample size and all, but maybe this is at least a LITTLE encouraging?Danny Espinosa opened his @SyracuseChiefs tenure 6-for-70. With a 1B and fifth-inning 2B tonight, he's 6 out of his last 10. #Nats

  140. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Gio is responsible for 8 RBI in last 2 games. It's been a pretty big difference. He won't keep this up, but it's a significant addition.

  141. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Not Gio -___-. If Gio did it, it'd be something! Ramos.

Knoxville: Lineups are strange things — one person can change a lineup, or just a change in the lineup itself can make The difference. Each slot in the order has a different job or duty to do and each one feels differently to each player. Players actually hit better in a certain spot. Who knows why? Setting the perfect lineup is almost a mystical exercise. But we've had both added players AND changed the lineup: Opposing pitchers are having difficulty pitching to this order — anyway it works!! don't change it

  144. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:10 AM

Espi isn't 6 for his last ten. If he started 6/70, that would mean before his 6/10 he was 0/for his first 60. And I know he was hitting 150 at some point on his way to .088.

  145. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:11 AM

Now 5-4 Phillies and the Philly announcers are dreading 2 more innings of their own bull pen.

  146. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:12 AM

It's possible your numbers aren't updated NatsFanSinceStart. It's including tonight's game. Mark retweeted that stat.

  147. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:13 AM

Gio might make it 7 innings. Who in the world would have guessed that?

  148. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:13 AM

Amazing turnaround by Gio. Now he can finish 7.

  149. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:14 AM

I owe you acold one DP.

  150. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:14 AM

Gio has made it through 6, I'll have my crow with ketchup please.

  151. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:15 AM

Okay, it's time for Harp to get a hit. He's due.

  152. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:16 AM

Now can we get at least 4 or 5 runs for Strasburg on Sunday? Not to mention JZ tomorrow?

  153. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:16 AM

    Or not.

  154. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Cliff Lee totally fell apart in the 7th. Not use to that.

  155. RickH - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Knoxville … Thanks for the heads up that Headley is a fellow UT alum and East Tennessean.

  156. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:19 AM

Philly clinging to a 1 run lead…but they have the worst bullpen in the NL.

  157. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:20 AM

    Slacking off since the 4th.

  158. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:21 AM

RickH,I'm not sure that Headley is actually an "alum", I think he may have left after 3 years.

  159. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:22 AM

So if this 6 run lead holds through the 7th…I'd put Storen in for the 8th. It's as low a leverage situation as you can get, and he needs to get back out there and try to fix whatever is wrong.

  160. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:23 AM

FP just nailed it. J-DUB batting 6th allows him to see the opposing pitcher and already have a good idea of how he's going to work him. Plus, he's doing his thinking out loud so the other bench guys are getting info, as well. He's batting in the perfect spot and worth every dime the Lerners pay him.

  161. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:28 AM

I found it funny when people accused Werth of exploiting his contract or his ego to get moved to the 2 spot over Rendon. It's funny because Werth has been fairly vocal that he doesn't like the 2 spot, but did it because Davey thought it was best for the team.

  162. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Braves out in the 8th. Nineth BJ UptonMcCannPinch hitter

  163. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:29 AM

I'll agree on JW's place in the lineup but I'm still not convinced about the money. I still think we paid too much for what Werth brings to the table.

  164. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:29 AM

    Stammen…

  165. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:30 AM

  168. JaneB - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:31 AM

    Oh man. Bring in Drew!

  169. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:32 AM

    Looks like it's a Clippard-Soriano night. Wasn't expecting that.

  170. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:32 AM

I was about to look it up Stammen's last 10 games as it has been not good either and gives up alot of inherited runners.

  171. BigCat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:33 AM

Stammen needs to pound low FB's. that's it Game over

  172. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:33 AM

I think some will get on Davey for pulling Gio, but to be honest, he'd thrown 119 pitches last time out. He was at 110. Stammen has struggled, it was a good spot to bring him in against a RHH. Thankfully we still have a decent lead.

  173. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:33 AM

7Th inning guys come in not ready lately.

  174. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:33 AM

Nats can't get Garcia or Mattheus back soon enough.Stammen AND Storen love hanging sliders lately.

  175. paul brandt - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:34 AM

saint mick/unknown, saw the name "Dick Bosman" in your previous posts and had to chime in:Dick Bosman was one of my coaches growing up and just a great guy…was one of my coaches for roughly 5+ years & learned alot from him and boy, did he have some good stories…my legion team even had the pleasure of being invited to play some semi-pro teams in Newfoundland when we were all 18 or so and Boz was a big part of making that happen…you can imagine the fun we had.p.s. I still have my infielders glove that Boz re-stitched himself…he was so appalled at the condition of my glove that he made me hand it over and it's still like brand new, some 25+ years later…really a wonderful guy and someone I looked up to and learned alot from.

  176. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:34 AM

Of course our last 9 hitters have been out, so we have this bad habit of relaxing.

  177. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:35 AM

I agree with DJ pulling Gio… It could have been a bad night by Gio but he made the adjustments and got going…Good outting by Gio… Glad he got the run support tonight too…

Werth has quietly had a very good stretch of games….

  182. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:39 AM

Wasn't around early, but just saw the replay of Ramos's first RBI single–FP called that the 5.5 hole, but that looked more like 5.1 to me.Buffalo!

  183. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:41 AM

Wow, Ramos just *looks* like a man fixing to hit something hard.

  184. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:42 AM

But no. House by the Side of the Road. Sigh.

  185. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:42 AM

Uhm… Why haven't we seen Abad or Krol lately?

  186. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:42 AM

That was a good pitch. Can't really fault Ramos for looking at that one. I thought it was well high and outside at first, but replay showed it was good.

  187. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:43 AM

6 to get, 2 to give. 1-2-3 from Clip would be huge.

  188. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:44 AM

Knoxville Nat…..it's not what Werth brings to the table in measureable numbers. It's the culture he brings that wasn't anywhere in the organization before his arrival. That doesn't mean there were people that didn't have the same abilities as coaches or managers. It means the Nats needed a catalyst on the field, playing ever day that relted to the rest of the players on how to be winners.Werth does that.

  189. Knoxville Nat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:44 AM

NatsJack,Many, many years ago was watching a friend of mine play in the Industrial League at Cabin John Regional Park. About the fifth inning or so this gentleman sat down near me and he looked familiar so I asked if he used to play for the Senators. He acknowledged that he did and introduced himself as Dick Bosman. We talked for several minutes and I kept thinking to myself, what a class act this guy is.

  190. BigCat - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Tracy out again……yawnWhat is the story with Micah at Syracuse? Seems like we might of had something with him. Attitude?

  191. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Stammen given up earned runs 4 of last 5 games, 5 of 8. 6 runs in last 6 innings. Not sre inherited runners. Not sure why he suddenly cant pitch like he was.

  192. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:47 AM

Stammen again throwing BP. What has happened to him and Storen.Stammen comes in to face 1 batter and once again lets an inherited runner to score while giving up another 2.

  193. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:47 AM

Stammen hasn't been really good ever since he came in for long relief for SS in Atl… At least that's the last time I really remember him being money…

  194. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:47 AM

Krol last pitched Tuesday, not exactly mop-up but it was 4-0 late. Abad pitched Wednesday. So we've sort of seen them, but I know what you mean, MrsB. Davey just has his heirarchies, and that's that.

  195. David Proctor - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:47 AM

I think Stammen is injured, tbh. You don't pitch nearly 1.5 spectacular years and then just implode like this. (Well it's possible, but I doubt it). Something is up.

  196. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:48 AM

He asked for and received his release earlier this ek.Why was Tracy battin instead of Lombo. We just needed a single.

  197. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 6, 2013 at 1:48 AM

MNF, his last Med Lev appearance was May 31st. Davey brings him into easier outings.
