Game 88: Padres at Nats

Jul 7, 2013, 4:00 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

Winners of three straight, the Nationals today seek their first four-game win since early-May. They are finally on something of a sustained roll, having won 11 of their last 18. That doesn't sound impressive? Well, that's a .611 winning percentage over the last three weeks, a rate that over a full season would equate to 99 wins. Obviously, they've got to prove they can do this for more than three weeks, but it's certainly a start.

With left-hander Robbie Erlin on the mound for the Padres, Davey Johnson is giving Adam LaRoche a rare day off. In his place is Tyler Moore, who starts only his third game of the season at first base. The rest of the lineup stays the same, with Wilson Ramos back in there behind the plate. (Another interesting note: The Nats this season are 11-5 when Ramos plays, 34-37 when he doesn't.)

Stephen Strasburg, owner of a 1.29 ERA over his last nine starts, gets the ball this afternoon against his hometown team. He hasn't surrendered more than two earned runs in any of those nine outings, quite a stretch of dominance for the right-hander.

I'm off today, taking a quick breather before heading to Philadelphia tomorrow. Enjoy the conversation…

So much for moving Span back in the lineup vs LHPs. Time for Span to get back to his historical good numbers vs LHPs.

  2. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:07 PM

yes GoSM. Hope today is the day.Hope to also see Moore's one of towering blasts today. Been a while.

  3. Section 222 - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Wonk, if your'e reading. I'll be there in 314. See you at the picnic tables beforehand if I get there in time.Found my Stras shirsey with the now vintage NATIONALS script on the front. So I'm looking for his first no-no today. Too much to expect? Ok, just a quality start.

  4. Section 222 - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:20 PM

Nice move to give ALR a day off. Ty-Mo, it's your day. Ghost, Span is Davey's leadoff hitter. That's just not going to change, especially now that he's heating up.

  5. A DC Wonk - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Section 222 said… Wonk, if your'e reading. I'll be there in 314. See you at the picnic tables beforehand if I get there in time. The picnic tables are, what, 312 or so?Also — how do we recognize each other (since we don't have "NI" signs yet? Here's how to recognize us. My beard is long overdue for a trim, I have a red Nats hat and a white Nats t-shirt. The cute Mrs. Wonk will be wearing a _pink_ Nats hat and blue t-shirt.

  6. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Sect222, you are correct. It won't change so we have to hope Span changes. Just waiting for him to progress to the mean. His numbers vs RHPs is All Star quality so once he turns around his batting vs LHPs his season will turn around. I just don't know how much longer you can wait on his batting vs LHPs. The man is the leadoff hitter and table setter.

  7. SCNatsFan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Boy a sweep would feel niiiiice

  8. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:33 PM

I would think they bring Desmond to Citifield given the injuries at AS shortstop

  9. natsfan1a - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Go, Stephen! Go, NATS!!(Also, Quinn Wolcott? What is this, the Algonquin or a ballgame? Oh, nevermind.)

  10. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:36 PM

and they ought to give Soriano the day off. I'm sure they will..He looked more shaky than usual yesterday. Thank you ALR for the amazing glove sve. He should have been a goalie too.

  11. SCNatsFan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:41 PM

I've never seen a reliever who gives up more base runners but gets the job done then soriano, or it certainly feels that way

  12. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:43 PM

And Espinosa heating up, he is showing he can do it.If this keeps up, he can become a key trade chip for an sp of Garza, nolasco caliber

  13. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:44 PM

I'm hoping we're up by enough that it's not a save situation. Storen seems to be Davey's go-to closer of choice when Soriano is unavailable and despite yesterday's great outing…I'd rather not see him.

  14. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:44 PM

yes, and they used him 3 days in a row. I hope they can use Krol/Abad/Clippard to give some rest to rafael

  15. sjb - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Of course, the player with the least time off has been Desmond. He has had exactly one off day this season, May 19 at San Diego. Espinosa replaced him (and, unsurprisingly, went 0 for 4). You would think he should get some time off in the second half, but who would replace him?

  16. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:47 PM

lombo could, you could move Rendon to SS also

  17. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:47 PM

    I was in 314 yesterday

  18. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:47 PM

My understanding of this guy pitching is that he's a rookie with a good fastball, but can't command his secondary pitches. Sounds kind of like a less-impressive Zach Wheeler. Hope we welcome him the same way we welcomed Wheeler.

  19. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:48 PM

    Tables at about 312

  20. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Desmond has come out and said he doesn't want days off. I'm not convinced that everyone needs them. There are guys (rare, but they happen) who play every inning the entire season. Adam Jones for the O's (vomit) did it last year. Machado was doing it this year til he got ejected.

  21. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:49 PM

I was behind you MNF, standing. Could not sit next to the Mayor of Natstown in my usual seats, sect 135, row C….too hot. He was there the whole game…admirable

  22. Secret wasian man - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Need to get this one. Since GIO Zimm and Stras definitely not pitching tomorrow.

  23. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:50 PM

I was shocked when he went 3 up 3 down Friday night.

  24. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:50 PM

good..they should be patient against the rookie.

  25. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:52 PM

I was in row H second from back, sitting with Mrs Manassas.

  26. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:53 PM

All coming off DL have played well. Haren will pitch well even in Philly.

  27. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:54 PM

perfect seats in my book…May change my Teddy plan seats next year, but will miss the Mayor and his groupies.

  28. Section 222 - Jul 7, 2013 at 4:57 PM

Wonk, don't think I'll make it much before first pitch unfortunately. I'll recognize you though since we've met before. I'll have on a white Stras shirsey. If you feel like wandering over after the third inning, I'll try to make a quick dippin dots run at that time with the youngster who'll be with me.

  29. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:25 PM

My buddy I often go with has Teddy in 313

  30. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:33 PM

Ryan Zimerman hasn't had a throwing error since June 9. Of course, he's had a few fielding errors…but still.

  31. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:37 PM

Ray Knight just did a pre-game interview with Stammen and called him the most valuable pitcher. The whole interview was sugarcoated and Stammen says he feels great. Ray never asked him what's been wrong in his last 6 appearances. He's had 1 good relief appearance within that span. Here's the numbers in his last 6 appearances, 8 innings, 10 runs scored, 6 of them on Stammen's ERA and 4 on the starter's ERA as he allowed 4 inherited runners to score.Ray can lob Stammen the easy ones, but get real, there's something wrong. Since May 31st he has also picked up 2 losses when he gave it up in tie games.

  32. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:38 PM

Stras with the breaker for the K on the lefty!

  33. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:40 PM

What a curve on eah of the first 2

  34. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Stras with the breaker breaker K on 2 lefties and the righty somehow pulls the outside pitch just past Desi for a single. Just when we were all thinking No Hitter.

  35. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:43 PM

That might've been Strasbrug's most dominant inning of the year, despite the hit. That was absolutely filthy.

  36. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:43 PM

Despite a hit, Stras looked really solid.

  37. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:43 PM

    David we agree.

  38. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:45 PM

Look at Span going the other way lately. That's a great sign.

  39. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:47 PM

Span getting a hit off of the lefty is a big deal. That's the way to make your manager look smart.

  40. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:48 PM

Way to go Denard! Lead off hit off the LH, then get in scoring position.I wouldn't even entertain the possibility of moving him down in the order.

  41. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Look at Desi going the other way with a smart out. Now Span sitting at 3rd with 1 out. That's situational bat control.

  42. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Harper with another RBI and a hit against a lefty

  43. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:50 PM

    Harper goes oppo single!

  44. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:51 PM

    Davey is a genius πŸ˜‰

  45. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Three hitters, nobody pulling the ball, or swinging for a six-run home run. Pitcher pounding the strike zone.

  46. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:52 PM

    Way to go, Harper!

  47. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:56 PM

(Also, Quinn Wolcott? What is this, the Algonquin or a ballgame? Oh, nevermind.)It's not the twenties yet. Silly to blame it on dates, anyway.

  48. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:58 PM

This guy must have a weird delivery or something. He blew fastballs by both Zim and Werth (although Werth made the out on a curve).

  49. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:59 PM

Erlin is a lefty who in inning 1 looked solid against righties and not so ggo against lefties. Not normal.

  50. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 5:59 PM

Left handlers 2-2 and right handlers 0-3 against the LHP.

  51. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:00 PM

    Owe you a beer, MNF!

  52. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:00 PM

LH actually hit Erlin better, according to his stats. Way better. Wonder if Davey realized that when he took LaRoche out. Was probably a scheduled day off for Adam anyway though.

  53. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:00 PM

I was hoping the Nats were going to knock this kid out in the 1st. 1 run in that inning is lucky for the Padres. RZim up with a 3-0 count and then goes down on 3 straight in the zone.Oh well. 1 run is better than none.

  54. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:01 PM

It's 92 here–anybody see a temperature on the field? There's sure no shade out there today.

  55. Candide - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:01 PM

A DC Wonk said… Section 222 said… Wonk, if your'e reading. I'll be there in 314. See you at the picnic tables beforehand if I get there in time. The picnic tables are, what, 312 or so? Also — how do we recognize each other (since we don't have "NI" signs yet?I've been saying for a while that someone should come to each game with an 8 x 11 sheet of paper that says, "NIDO Settlement Here."I won't be able to do it for a while; Cunegonde and I are in France until July 14. Going to bed each night before first pitch, waking up to fire up my phone and checking MLB At Bat. Hardly an adequate substitute.Update: Nephew #1 (lives in DC, also a Nats fan also here in Provence) just walked into the room – "Nats on top, one-nothing."

  56. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Is it me or is Strasburg's velocity down? A lot of 93s.

  57. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Stras looked good first 6 batters than suddenly….

  58. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:06 PM

David Proctor said… LH actually hit Erlin better, according to his stats. Way better. Wonder if Davey realized that when he took LaRoche out. Was probably a scheduled day off for Adam anyway though. That's an interesting analysis. Definitely need to see where that goes today.

  59. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:07 PM

Thank goodness the pitcher was up. All 93-94 in that inning.

  60. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:08 PM

    Braves behind by 2 runs.

  61. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:11 PM

Stras has thrown 33 pitches and only 2 changeups. Fastballs and curves today so far.

  62. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:12 PM

Is it me or is Strasburg's velocity down? A lot of 93s.Maybe he's pacing himself in the heat?

  63. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:14 PM

How many times will Carp refer to Everth Cabrera as the All Star today.

  64. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Stras's velo is definitely off today unless the radar gun needs recalibration.I wonder what the stadium gun says.Stras reared back against the pitcher on the K and was at 94.

  65. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:16 PM

    Ghost, over-under? I'll put it at 6.5. I think he's got 2 already.

  66. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Curveball K of Everth Cabrera tightened up this time to start over the middle of the plate. Great call as the batter was thinking changeup.

  67. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:20 PM

    Definitely over 6.5. He's at 3 now πŸ˜‰

  68. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:20 PM

That last pitch was 96 on the black. So nevermind.

  69. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:22 PM

David, I wonder if they recalibrated the radar gun in the 3rd inning.

  70. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:23 PM

So that's two things Strasburg is clearly not concerned about today: pitch count and hitting people.

  71. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:24 PM

Batter would have been dead there with a decent throw.

  72. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:24 PM

    Rendon rushed that needlessly.

  73. sjm308 - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:25 PM

Not a good throw from Rendon

  74. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:26 PM

Strasbug is like jekyl and hyde. Great or throwing way to many balls. My buddy and I said that where Suzuki bears Ramos is catching throws coming in. Ren dons throw not easy to catch, but should habeen caught. He was out by 4 teps. Jyst catxh it.

  75. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:26 PM

The throw from Rendon was awful. That kind of throw could put Ramos back on the DL

  76. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:26 PM

    Rushed but catchable

  77. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Learning Moment there, maybe, for Rendon. With his back to the play, it's hard to see where the runner is when you take the throw. Next time, he'll know to check quickly first, and know who's running. Still, even rushing it, he needs to get that closer. I expect he will, next time.

  78. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:27 PM

You expose your catcher with a high throw like that. That HBP comes back to bite Stras.

  79. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:27 PM

The runner was not close to home, so no danger, though had he been close then danger.

  80. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:28 PM

Wasnt a good throw, but it was catchable.

  81. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:28 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan said… Rushed but catchable That didn't take long. It's a catcher's mitt not a fielder's glove. Sheesh.

  82. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:29 PM

Stras has been Jekyll or Hyde this game. Great pitches and terrible ones.

  83. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:29 PM

Cardinal sin walking the opposing pitcher even if it is the Silver Slugger.

  84. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Another failed Span bunt. I don't get why he keeps trying it.

  85. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Did i say easy? No catchable.

  86. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM

If Span could get those bunts a foot or 2 closer to the 3rd base line those outs would be hits.

  87. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Well, it was catchable in the sense that Ramos did get the mitt on it, so it's possible it might have stuck, but "should have been caught"? No way.

  88. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:31 PM

I basically watch 20 games a week and seen about 50%-60% like that caught

  89. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:32 PM

MNF, catchable by Joe Mauer and some of those other 6'5" catchers.

  90. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:32 PM

Ramos had to leap into the air to even get his mitt on it. I don't think that's fair.

  91. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:33 PM

He fails because he places bunts in the wrong place. Lefty pitching. Bunt to first base side toward second baseman.

  92. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:33 PM

    That works too

  93. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Posey caught 2 last night Brandon Crawford threw just like it. He is not that tall.

  94. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:35 PM

For the record, Ramos lists as 6 foot, even. He did well to get to that at all.

  95. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Need Zim to come up here.

  96. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan said… I basically watch 20 games a week and seen about 50%-60% like that caught Really 50-60% like those caught in a week? I rarely see throws like that. Most throws to home are caught on a line or bounced in or way offline.I must be watching different games because this is my 88th Nats game of the year and the 1st I've seen all season thrown that high to a Nats catcher.

  97. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:36 PM

I never said it was easy, i said catchable. Not complaining as much as you guys are defending.

  113. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:43 PM

Speaking for myself, I thought you were commenting, not complaining. Again, sorry for beating the horse.

  114. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:43 PM

    Rendon back over .300

  115. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:44 PM

Way to go, Zim! Four rounds of NATS! NATS! NATS!And now Anthony Rendon! YOWSA!!!MNF, it was a very tough ball to catch, not impossible. None the less, I have seen a lot of catchers get seriously hurt by getting their legs cut out from under them on high throws to the plate. The fault on that play, in my opinion, no matter how I look at the replay, was Rendon's.

  116. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:44 PM

Man Tyler Moore is slow. I thought he would beat that out. "Wheels" LaRoche would have!

  117. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:45 PM

Comment not complaint, as far as Cabrerra was in the hole, tyler Moore slower tgan molsses.

  118. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:45 PM

So, do you want Ramos to clear the pitcher here, or just let him get back on the mound and lead off next inning?

  119. A DC Wonk - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Why in the world did RZ swing at a first pitch with the bases loaded and the pitcher in trouble πŸ˜‰

  120. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Sorry, I had wrote that while watching the HR's. Also didn't mean to pile on.

  121. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:47 PM

I was thinking, too, for a guy with such long legs (he's 6'2"), Moore looks like he should be faster. But then that doesn't really correlate, does it?

Wonk, he took the fastball last AB at 3-0. He must be reading this between innings, and adapting.; )

  123. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:49 PM

I just like watching an actual center fielder play center field. Maybe it's just me.

  124. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:49 PM

    Bolt is 6'5" i think

  125. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM

According to some he should be in left, but not most of us.

  126. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan said… Posey caught 2 last night Brandon Crawford threw just like it. He is not that tall. July 07, 2013 2:35 PM The shame for you is that I actually watched the entire Dodgers game last night and there was only 1 play at home and it was a low catchable throw 3rd to home. Please don't make up lies. I am attaching the videotape of the only throw home which is near the end of the video highlights.http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=28676555&query=%26game_pk%3D348047

  127. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Why doesn't Strasburg throw his changeup much anymore? Don't get me wrong, his curve has been FILTHY, but the change was his out pitch for much of the year. It seems like he's going to it way less.

  128. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM

Certainly doesn't seem to be holding INSANE back much, does it? Watching Randy Johnson run was the first thing that came to my mind. That was not pretty.

  129. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM

Stras hitting 95-97 now. Much better.

  130. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:54 PM

I hate to see Strasburg walk that guy! When I coached young outfielders we used to have a drill where we put a trash can on the ground on its side, at the plate, with the opening facing 2nd base, and had fielders throw the ball into the can on one bounce.

  131. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:54 PM

Phillies up 4-0 on the Barves.

  132. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Dammit. Strasburg was looking so good

  133. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Walks and HBPs biting Stras in the rear end today.

  134. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Was last night might been friday and the ball was caught but no play as the runners held at thirsmd. Cain was backing up ready to catch.

Stras taking tips from Zimm on not wanting a large lead?

  138. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:56 PM

BJ Upton up with men on 3rd and 2nd and no outs and K's on 4 pitches.

  139. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:57 PM

One he had to go on tip toes, one stretching up. Looking back Cain pitched Friday not last night.I flip many games at same times, and mix nights and sometimes even games

  140. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:57 PM

Just my opinion, of course, but I think MNF has earned the benefit of the doubt in here, that he must be mistaken if he mis-states a material fact. YMMV.

  141. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:58 PM

Our guys want support, but pitch better without.

  142. Ken - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM

Another day off???? I mean geez, really?

  143. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM

I'd highly prefer we stay up by at least 4 (hopefully more) so that we don't have to use our "A" bullpen.

  144. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM

BJ Upton has struck out in 50 straight games.

  145. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM

MNF, I watch almost every Dodgers game too so I watched Friday night also. Now you are saying there was no play at the plate. Let's just move on. It was a lousy throw and Rendon will learn to never elevate a throw to a catcher like that as you will injure your catcher.

  146. JaneB - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:00 PM

What's up with TWO HBP from Strasburg? I'm working and can only monitor the game from the MLB app. Seems off and weird for him.

  147. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Pettibone gets out of it 4-1 and the pitcher knocked in the only run as they had 3rd and 2nd with no outs.

  148. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:02 PM

Last year was N3 for Bryce for the Final Man vote.

  149. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:03 PM

JaneB, Stras went from unhittable to just missing badly. Strange.

  150. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Carp loves Bud Black's brilliant career 121-116 3.84 ERA.

  151. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Strasburg has been all over the place. One inning he has pinpoint command and is unhittable, the next time he can't hit a spot to save his life. It's frustrating.

  152. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Medlin buzzed Dominic Brown back. Then homered 5-1

  153. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:11 PM

Get Blanks here Stras and get back in the dugout.

  154. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:11 PM

David I said he is like Jekyll and Hyde all game

  155. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:12 PM

Strasburg isn't making it easy, but that scoreless inning was big. I suspect Stras has 1 more inning in him with the bottom of the lineup coming up.

  156. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:12 PM

Huge K of Blanks who is a big HR guy! Scary there with 2 men on and a 4 run lead!

  157. SCNatsFan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:13 PM

  158. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:15 PM

    Heads up play by Harper

  166. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Let's get an add on run. (Or several)

  167. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:23 PM

Strasburg is throwing the 2 types of curveballs today and both are killer. He has the big hook and the tighter that drops in the dirt out of the zone. Nasty.I wish Nats pitchers threw more of those out of the zone breakers that look like strikes for 55 feet. Only guy who can hit those retired (Vlad Guerrero).

  168. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:23 PM

Phillies bullpen is in. Bad news.

  169. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:24 PM

Strasburg looks so uptight on the mound. I realize he's a very reserved guy, but I wish he would just relax. I think he'd be even better if he didn't put so much pressure on himself.Or maybe that pressure on himself is what makes him so good. Who knows.

  170. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:24 PM

Phillies escape again with 2 on. Still 5-1 heading to Phillies up in bottom of 6.

  171. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:25 PM

  172. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:26 PM

  173. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:26 PM

David, Stras just strives for perfection on each pitch. Nobody is harder on himself than Stras and that's what makes him so special.

  176. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:29 PM

We just got Strasburg those 2 runs back from the homer.

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:29 PM

    Keep the line moving

  178. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:29 PM

OK, this is where I start to think, "Save some for tomorrow, boys…"

  179. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Cardinals re-aligned their rotation and Wainwright will now pitch on Tuesday and again on Sunday if there are no rainouts. The new CBA says by team/player decision there is now an option where the player can pitch no more than 1 inning in the All Star game. It will be interesting if Waino decides he sits and if he does I'm thinking Stras is next man up for an All Star game invite.

  180. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:32 PM

Sec. 3, My Sofa said… Gee, that's an E-4. July 07, 2013 3:27 PM You are a bad bad Sofa. Play nice! E-2

  181. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Naah. E-4. That was a high throw that has to be caught. He didn't even have to leave his feet. That's an E-4 in Ponce de Leon.

  182. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Cleared the bases not what we wanted but 3 runs in

  183. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:35 PM

    Strasburg getting into the act!

  184. Smatt1001 - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:36 PM

    And Stras gets an RBI!

  185. Smatt1001 - Jul 7, 2013 at 3:37 PM

  187. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:38 PM

OK, I don't like DH, but speaking of Ponce, how about designated baserunners for the pitcher, if he should reach? Maybe only with 2 outs?

  188. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:38 PM

Sec3, LMAO, I knew where you were going with that! I saw 2 thrown like that yesterday caught by the 2nd baseman πŸ˜‰

    Phillies 6-1 on wld pitch

  190. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:40 PM

  193. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:42 PM

And here's to the good times!!!!I've got new central AC and the Nats are hitting insanely but I'm outside digging in the dirt ?WTFleast caught the last 4….And Stras may actually get a win

  194. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:44 PM

  195. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:45 PM

He cant get Amerista "The Little Ninja" out

  196. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:46 PM

  197. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Well, he got him. He was trying to move, just not fast enough.

  198. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Strasburg is plunking Padres left and right. It's not intentional, but Strasburg is probably happy he's not batting again. Wouldn't surprise me if they plunked him.

  199. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Stras needs to take care of biz here. 3 HBPs. Crazy.

  200. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Strasburg pulling out his inner Bob Gibson.

  201. Smatt1001 - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:48 PM

  203. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:49 PM

  204. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:50 PM

  209. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Come on Stras, stop putting men on base for free. A solo shot can't hurt you up by 8. A grand slam can.

  210. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:52 PM

    There bullpen is poor.

  223. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 7:59 PM

Davey knew exactly what he was doing. As I've said, Davey deserved criticism at times for his in-game management, but when it comes to managing people, there's nobody better.

  224. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Double switch shark to right batting 9th stammen bat 5th

  225. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Actually Stra was pretty nasty, but for whatever reason, when he gets it up, even at 96-97, they hammer it. That little guy went upper deck on him. Must be a deception thing with him. He's falling off to first base with that shoulder flying open, so the hitters see that fastball very well

  226. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:04 PM

So Manassas…..what do you say about Eck now?

  227. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Craig Stammen steps in and the 1st pitch on cue is a BP fastball.

  228. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Why is Stammen getting hit so badly lately? I like Davey putting him in here because it's low leverage. But…

  229. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:08 PM

wow Zim. Moore almost called for a fair catch. But its an out Good play

  230. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:08 PM

David, just getting too much plate and lack of movement on his pitches.Read my comments pre-game as Ray Knight interviewed him. He called Stammen the pitching MVP. Not sure what game Ray is watching.

  231. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:09 PM

That's a pick that LaRoche makes 10/10 times.

  232. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:09 PM

  234. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:10 PM

They're teeing off on Stammen. Put in Krol.

  235. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:10 PM

How many errors has LaRoche saved this year.Hitting Stamnen hard again.

  236. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:10 PM

Then they must open the stars and stripes club when gametime heat index is above 95.a 4 pm start gives them plenty of time to getaway.

  237. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:11 PM

2 quick runs. 1 earned and 1 unearned. Sheesh.

  238. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:11 PM

  239. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:11 PM

Stammen needs to get out of this funk.Lets score a few more in the bottom 7

  240. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:12 PM

  241. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Then they must open the stars and stripes club when game time heat index is above 95.And you have plenty of time to get away with a 4 pm sunday start unless one team travels to the other coast.

  242. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:15 PM

  245. Jim Zurer - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Strasburg hit three batters today but not one of them moved a muscle to try and get out the way of the pitches. None of them were that far inside in my view.Is it my imagination but have ballplayers stopped trying to avoid getting hit?

  246. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:18 PM

I don't miss Tyler Moore being in the lineup…

  247. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:19 PM

st. louis is bad, but they used to get more cold frontal passages and they are not close to a heat source such as the bay where water temps reach the upper 80s. Pave the bay.

  269. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM

Bad play by Moore. Rendon had it.

  270. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM

    Stammen slower than TyMoore.

  271. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM

Stammen even not fielding his position. Pathetic.

  272. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM

Stammen gotta stay down. Then his ball moves. Up….its meat HERE WE GOOOO!!

  273. Smatt1001 - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM

    Defense sub. LaRoche for T-Mo?

  274. sjm308 - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:33 PM

I can understand one or even two good field no-hit types but we really have four no hit types and only Bernadina is what I consider above ave. in the field.Get Stammen out of there now!

  275. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:33 PM

Stammen hasn't been good since he pitched for SS in Atlanta….

  276. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:33 PM

    Where are Krol and Abad?

  277. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:34 PM

Papelbon in for a non-save for Cholly. Nats need to go to the "A" bullpen here. No time for screwing around with Staymen.

  278. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Stra is just shaking his head I bet.

  279. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Okay, this is really pissing me off.

  280. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:35 PM

    yes…somebody wake up uncle davey

  281. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM

What had to happen to pull Stammen?Ray knight knows hitters not pitcherStammen is working on giving this away.

  282. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Stammen has given up 5 hits… Really????I'm not sure I would use Storen here either… What about Abad?

  283. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Storen with 2 men on. This is a recipe for disaster.

  284. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:37 PM

    ineffective stammen again.

  285. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:38 PM

On Davey, he just wants to keep bringing Stammen out there. While nothing was hit hard in that inning, he just didn't get the job done.

  286. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:38 PM

I'm not saying Ramos should have had that, I'm just thinking maybe it's time to re-think his mitt endorsement deal and consider Mizuno, or somebody else.

  287. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:38 PM

Abad and Krol are persona non grada. I called for krol to start the 7th and Stammen was davey's choise. Not sure what Stammen's problem.

  288. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:38 PM

    Yeah, where is Krol?

  289. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:38 PM

I understand Davey putting Stammen in for the first inning, but Stammen got hit around. I don't understand why Davey put him in for the second inning when Krol hasn't worked in a week.

  290. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:38 PM

agree…what do you have krol for

  291. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:39 PM

    Sec3, new mitt needed.

  292. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:39 PM

    He drops a number

  293. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:39 PM

Wow I didn't realize Storen had standed 7 of 9 inherited baserunners. Maybe this makes a tad more sense.

  294. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:40 PM

Papelbon starts the 9th with an 11 pitch walk.

  295. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Stammen has been ineffective for a while…. I wonder what is going on???Will he have a phantom injury when Mattheus returns…Nice K Storen…

  296. JaneB - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Man I thought our seven runs would be all that's needed. Good thing they're piling on. This game is LONG today! Usually Stras pitches fast. Just checked the score and the game is still going!Hold them here, bull pen! Please!

  297. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:41 PM

It looks from here like Ramos is using a relatively smaller mitt, but maybe that's just how it looks on a big guy.

  298. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:41 PM

That took intestinal fortitiude to throw Headley a changeup on 2-2 when Headly knew it was fastball πŸ˜‰

  299. Secret wasian man - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:41 PM

I'm here. Couldn't hold on any more. Unreal that we are all on the edge of our seats. STAMMen is awful. Davey is worse for bringing him back out. Ughhhh

  300. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:42 PM

    Krol finally stands up.

  301. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:43 PM

If Stammen covered 1st on the grounder this inning probably is already over.

  302. BigCat - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:43 PM

  310. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Okay, if we're going to bash Storen for his bad outings (and he deserved it), we have to give him credit. 2 men on, no out in a big point in the game and he gets out of it.

  311. jeffwx - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:49 PM

storen dominated yesterday and today just like a beatles album

  312. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Good job Drew… I just got back in the house… Can't wait to see how we scored 11 runs…How was SS today? I'm assuming 3/4 runs are becuz of Stammen?

  313. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Stammen gets out today with only 2 earned. Storen with a heck of a stopper appearance. Very impressive. Those that doubt he couldn't be a closer somewhere else, I think that just showed you what Storen really has.

  314. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:50 PM

    Phillies win.

  317. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:50 PM

In other great news, Barves lost and Papelbon was used for a long inning throwing 25 pitches.

  318. Faraz Shaikh - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:51 PM

that kind of tension in a 'blowout' win is unnecessary. why was davey using stammen in second inning? hope reporters ask him that.

  319. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:51 PM

Lead in the NL East is now 4 1/2 games! Believers believe!

  320. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:52 PM

OK, I checked several pictures, and it looks like Ramos is using a more-or-less standard Wilson A2K. So if it's not customized, it's not particularly small. Must be just in comparison to the Buffalo behind it.

  321. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 7, 2013 at 8:53 PM

  339. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 7, 2013 at 9:02 PM

MNF, I think Davey maybe is saving Abad and Krol because he likes them for an upcoming tough series, rather than banishing them. Shouldn't have had to bring Storen in, really, but not much choice there.

  340. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 7, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Carp and FP calling K-lip the MVP of the Nats bullpen after Ray Knight in the pre-game called Stammen the MVP of the Nats pitching staff. Can the MASN guys get on the same page. Maybe Ray was confused and thought he was interviewing Tyler Clippard earlier today. πŸ˜‰

  346. David Proctor - Jul 7, 2013 at 9:07 PM

  347. Smatt1001 - Jul 7, 2013 at 9:07 PM

MrsB: It was a double switch…and we had much much more of a lead when it happened. Nothing to suggest Werth was hurt

I'm talking about the fans sofa. Players can handle it.Several with heat exhaustion….no need for that in 2013.Open up Stars and Stripes, give away water, when heat index is above 95.More comfort stations…water sprays, later starts. You'll get more fans and reduce the risk of heat related illness from the out of shape 40 and 50 somethings sucking up the 9 dollar beers further maximizing their risk of dehydration.

Here's one for you 19 for me, cause we're the Nats, man…MrsB,Denard Span had Avery good game, starting with a leadoff hit, and scoring in the first. He is being criticized for his bunt today. I think that he should keep bunting. The rest of his game seems to be coming together. He's a good blunter that hasn't been executing perfectly.I say keep keep bunting until you regain perfect form.I was really happy for a lot of guys today, but none more than Ryan Zimmerman. His grand slam was just great, and it was super to see him break a big smile!

Well, Strasburg at times today was throwing them here, there, and everywhere….

  386. Drew - Jul 7, 2013 at 10:07 PM

Someone has tweaked the list of the Nats' top 20 prospects on the team's home page for its minor league affiliates. It mainly removes Rendon — presumably up for good — moves others up a peg and adds Ian Krol at No. 20.The top five are now Goodwin, Giolito, Cole, Michael Taylor and Karns.I still don't get the fascination with Taylor. Yes, he's stolen about 30 bases, but he never has had a high on base percentage or hit for power.I obviously could be wrong, but right now I think Purke, Matt Skole, Robbie Ray and Taylor Jordan have better chances to be big leaguers with impact.Brandon Miller the slugger drafted out of Samford in 2012, is lurking at No. 17. He hit a grand slam today in the first inning for Hagerstown. He has 16 homers and more than 50 RBIs in 81 games.

SonnyG10, to paraphrase Davey on Stammen "He's been snakebit the past few weeks. I had to pull him to change the momentum."That 1st pitch double was a bad pitch. The rest is BABIP lucky/unlucky and the fact Stammen snakebit himself by not covering 1st is his own fault.Lucky for him Storen didn't allow any of those inherited runners to score.

Just think if the Nats could have won that Tuesday game vs the Brewers the Nats would be 3 back. These next 4 against the Phillies will be a dog fight.

Phillies have Hamels and Lee both pitching. Tough lefties, although Hamels is having a bad year.

When they say Strasburg left his mark on the Padres they mean it literally after he plunked 3 guys who will have lace mark bruises on them for a while.

  403. Joe Seamhead - Jul 7, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Ghost, I really don't think that Johnson misses as much as some of us thinks that he does., though sometimes he gets ahead of himself. Randy Knorr says it's sometimes embarrassing the things that Davey sees that nobody else does. I still think that he runs a marathon, not a dash. He does frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, but as I've said many times before, two things everybody thinks that they can do better- run a restaurant and manage a baseball team. Relax, we got this. You'll see.

From Amanda Comak on Bryce Harper receiving an invitation from David Wright to hit in the HR Derby: The Home Run Derby, which is essentially batting practice for the players but with a focus of hitting only home runs, is often a lively event for fans to attend and for the other All-Stars to watch. It also has a history of screwing with players’ swings and some past participants point to it as the start of a second-half slump. While I don't disagree with Amanda I chuckle at her choice of words "screwing with players' swings".

The Barves fans are freaking out. I wonder if they will be looking for Gregg for their bullpen.Starter Kris Medlen gave up a career-high seven runs for Atlanta and fell to 6-8 with a 3.45 ERA.

NatsLady, sure do and they are very different. Only similarity I saw was their attack style. Harvey is a good comparison and I wonder if he modeled his approach after Strasburg.Strasburg is very Verlander-esque.

I actually think we will get to Lannan tomorrow… We just saw him 3 or so weeks ago… I want to say we miss Howard too since he is on the DL (I think it's Howard)…. But I have a feeling (probably hoping) we see the Dan Haren that faced Baltimore and our offense will carry us through…Side Note – I'm really glad to see T Jordan is staying up… He has been very solid during his stint up here…

  417. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 12:54 AM

I like the new Mick. How are you feeling the odds are for getting to a 2 to 3 game deficit a week from today for the lead in the NL East?

  418. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 12:54 AM

  421. Joe Seamhead - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:03 AM

Ghost, I remember you saying we need to make it one game at a time. From the beginning of the season I've been saying something to the effect that we were going to be in a dog race with Atlanta, and that we would probably not be in first place from beginning to end, but we would be there at the end.I have kept my positive take all year with the exception of the loss of the Cubs game the day after Strasburg's meltdown. My enthusiasm was dealt a hard blow that day, but only for a day. Anyway, I still think the Nats will win the division for the same reasons as I thought in April: We have the best team, and we have a better manager. Now, I also think Rizzo is going to need to make a move to get another starter, and to make a couple of moves to tweak the bench, if he indeed believes that we can win it all this year.

  422. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:05 AM

Fantastic game today. Totally entertaining. And lots of NATS NATS cheers. I was joined in 314 by my friend's son who has come to baseball games with me since he was 4 in 2006, and I had to keep him entertained with peanuts and cotton candy and hope we could stay till the stretch. Now, as an 11 year old, he's into the game, loves the Nats, and soaks up everything about strategy that I can feed him. He still likes Dippin Dots, so he hasn't grown up completely yet. We have a great time. Today, he was wearing his Ryan Zimmerman jersey that he got at promotion game a few years ago. But he said he was thinking about getting a Harper shirt. When Zim came up with the bases loaded, I said to him, "Ryan should really hit a slam here because you're wearing his jersey, and you might switch to Harper pretty soon." When Ryan's shot left the park, the look of pure joy on his face was priceless. He said, "I think I'll keep wearing my Zimmerman jersey."

  423. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:05 AM

I'm hoping with you MrsB that Haren gets the Win tomorrow. If his cutter is moving 3+ inches horizontally then he will have the movement needed to have a good game. Again, he can sacrifice the velo for the movement as that is Haren's game "movement" and locating.

  424. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:07 AM

I think Davey hoped to get Storen and Stammen turned around by using them against the Padres. Seemed to have worked with Storen, thank goodness, unfortunately not with Stammen. We need the whole bullpen working well to win this thing. I just wonder who goes down when Mattheus is ready.

  425. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:09 AM

Joe, definitely need bench upgrades and especially a true right-handed outfielder is needed. I'm scared by the thoughts of obtaining a starter and the cost of that. For the playoffs, you only need 4. TJord can take this team to mid to end of August and if there's a way to get this to September 1st where you expand rosters I think Davey can go quick hook. Let's hope the new Haren is what we need and Detwiler can come back healthy after the All Star break.

  426. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:10 AM

Krol hasn't worked at all in a week.

  427. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:17 AM

David, Krol even got up today. Just not used.

  428. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 1:24 AM

Sect222, Davey stood up for Stammen in his postgame. Likes his stuff. Said he's been snakebit but per the Pitch FX he threw the 1st batter faced a center cut waist high fastball that was crushed for the double. Actually many poor pitches again. Davey doesn't need to cover for these guys like he did for Espi for over a year until he told the truth last week.

222–loved the story about your kid. Priceless.

  434. Joe Seamhead - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:34 AM

Here is why I think Atlanta will lose the division:They had runners at second and third with none out in the fifth inning against Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone (5-3), who proceeded to strike out both B.J. Upton and Chris Johnson. Upton complained about the called third strike and was ejected by home-plate umpire Doug Eddings after returning to the dugout. The Upton brothers were 0-7 today with 4 more strikeouts.BJ is wearing thin with a lot of umpires with his whining. It's going to haunt him more and more as the season goes on.Have I ever mentioned how glad I was that the Nats didn't sign any outfielder named Upton?

  435. UnkyD - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:34 AM

I'm with Ghost: I hope Rizzo is able to punch up the bench bats, without depleting our already meager cupboard of prospects… A starter who is a real improvement over our on-house options will cost too much. If our Big Three stay healthy and effective, we'll have as good a chance as anybody. And if one of them goes down (touching wood!), we're screwed anyway… Maybe Shark and T-mo will get their grooves back…

  436. Joe Seamhead - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:37 AM

Unkyd, I think much of it depends on which Dan Haren we see from here on out.

  437. UnkyD - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:46 AM

Fingers crossed…. Still… The point is that the guys they'll wan in trade from us, aren't far enough along to command 1 for 1 deals. I can just see us sending Purke and Cole away for some Garza, and then have somebody go down, making the point moot…. No desperate deals! So Let It Be Written….

  438. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:48 AM

The Nats didn't disappoint today. Huge power display in support of Strasburg. Storen looked real good.

  439. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:48 AM

TJordan had a nice outing last time out. But I just doubt that he, Det, Haren, and whoever replaces TJ when he hits his innings limit, will get us through to October. If Rizzo is serious about getting to the playoffs this year, we need another reliable starter. I don't have the answer on who it should be and what we'd be willing to give up, but I just think standing pat is the wrong approach.

  440. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:52 AM

"Section 222 said… TJordan had a nice outing last time out. But I just doubt that he, Det, Haren, and whoever replaces TJ when he hits his innings limit, will get us through to October. "You only need 4 starters for October which they have if Detwiler is healthy. Its the $13 million man who is the unknown here. TJ can hold his own until he will reach his innings limit.

  441. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 2:57 AM

Did you all see what Gorzo did as today's starter for the Brewers. 6 innings of 8 hits 8 K pitching with no walks. Gave up no earned however 2 scored on an error so he took the loss in a 2-1 game.

  442. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:09 AM

Rizzo has to be in wait & see mode on Haren and Detwiler before he pulls the trigger on a starter. Again, I'm just hoping this Detwiler issue isn't his hip. If it is his back, get him the extra rest this time. Not much difference between some of these 3.45 ERA guys and the 3.75 ERA guys and I'd be looking for starters who can get you deeper into the games.Bud Norris is the name I like given he is under team control through the 2015 season so you can trade a big prospect and I'd propose Karns + Espinosa + Tyler Moore and see if they bite.

  443. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:16 AM

Let me give you Bud Norris numbers. 2 lousy starts and 4 games of 0 runs, 3 games of 1 runs, and 5 games of 2 runs. This is a pitcher that has those Crawford Boxes in a hitter's park.Maybe Houston won't trade him or would want too much for him and if you pay more prospects for him maybe Rizzo pulls that sign & extension type of deal he did with Gio.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 19sSource: #Nationals acquire OF Scott Hairston from #Cubs. There's our bench bat.

  445. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:33 AM

Although he hasn't really hit well this year.

  446. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:39 AM

He does have 7 homers though which would be more than double anyone else on our bench.

  447. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:47 AM

Per ESPN:However, his offensive downturn is almost entirely based on hitting balls right at people. His walk rate, strikeout rate and isolated power are almost identical to his marks from last year with the Mets, when he posted a 118 wRC+ and was a high-quality role player. His batting average on balls in play, however, is a staggeringly low .132, 155 points below his 2012 mark and easily the lowest of any hitter with at least 100 plate appearances this year. BABIP is much less predictive than other measures, especially over 100 plate appearances, and Hairston could easily go back to mashing left-handed pitching in the second half. For a team looking for a platoon outfielder, Hairston would be a nice low-cost option.

  448. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:52 AM

The Nationals figure to use Hairston in the role currently occupied by Tyler Moore, a second-year player who is batting only .157/.202/.294. And the Nats will control Hairston through next season.Sounds like Moore is going back down.

  449. NCNatsie - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:57 AM

Llke the Hairston move, mainly because Tyler is still our projected first baseman some day and if he's going to do that job well, he needs to spend the rest of this year playing every day in Syracuse.

  450. SonnyG10 - Jul 8, 2013 at 3:57 AM

Ghost Of Steve M. said…Bud Norris is the name I like given he is under team control through the 2015 season so you can trade a big prospect and I'd propose Karns + Espinosa + Tyler Moore and see if they bite.July 07, 2013 11:09 PMI guess I'm going to be crusified for saying this, but I don't want to see Espinosa get traded. He is a better 2nd baseman than Rendon. He has more range, a stronger arm, and more athleticism in performing the pivot on double plays. I would like to keep him in the minors until he gets his hitting straightened out, but have him available for when we lose LaRoache. Maybe this is just a pipe dream on my part and it won't happen, but I can hope. I do want him to hit at least .270 or .280, preferabily higher though. Otherwise his defense won't be worth it.

  451. sjm308 - Jul 8, 2013 at 4:06 AM

Actually SonnyG, I was just hoping we kept him and wasn't looking that far ahead but it does make sense. When LaRoche has finished his contract, you move Ryan to first, Rendon back to third and hopefully let Espinosa take over 2nd. Now, if he continues his strikeouts and horrible OBP you certainly don't do that but we have control for several more years. I hated letting Lannan go when we still had control and he would have helped this year. I don't care all that much about their feelings, they are professional athletes and if they help our team more by staying in the minors then so be it.
