Game 89: Nats at Phillies

Jul 8, 2013, 7:33 PM EDT

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

PHILADELPHIA — Hello from Citizens Bank Park, where the suddenly red-hot Nationals arrive for a four-game series with the Phillies, kicking off a seven-game road trip in advance of the All-Star break. The Nats, of course, are riding a four-game winning streak and have won 12 of their last 18, leaving them four games over .500 for the first time since mid-May. A win tonight would get them to five games over, matching their high-water mark of the season.

We've got an interesting pitching matchup for the series opener: Dan Haren vs. old pal John Lannan. Haren is making his return from the DL, and it's anybody's guess how he'll look tonight. He will be attempting to do something kind of cool tonight: If Haren wins, he'll become only the 13th pitcher in MLB history to have beaten all 30 current franchises.

The newly acquired Scott Hairston is expected to be here and in uniform for tonight's game, though I don't expect him to be in the lineup. Don't be surprised, though, if Davey Johnson finds a way to get the veteran outfielder in there tomorrow. Hairston's career numbers against Cole Hamels: 12-for-30, five doubles, five homers, 1.521 OPS.

Updates to come, so please check back…

Lannan vs Haren: potential slugfest in the making.

  2. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:40 PM

One little tidbit for those that like their small sample size meals, Roger Bernadina for some reason had hit Cliff Lee well. I had to look it up as I remembered this from last year: .429/.429/.429/.857 as he is 3 for 7 lifetime.

  3. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:40 PM

"If Haren wins, he'll become only the 13th pitcher in MLB history to have beaten all 30 current franchises."OK, now I'm *really* pulling for Haren.

  4. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:43 PM

Here's Hairston's slash against Cliff Lee with 2 HRs and a double .214/.214/.464/.679 in 28 ABs.

  5. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:44 PM

For those of you wondering, Scott Hairston doesn't own John Lannan. 0-6 in his career vs John.

  6. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Wow, he's even been strong against Lee? The timing of this move is very interesting…

  7. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Well, not STRONG against Lee, but not helpless, either.

  8. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Span and Bernadina have better numbers against Cliff Lee unless you are going for Slugging % as your priority plus you pickup defense with Bernadina over Hairston.

  11. A DC Wonk - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:52 PM

David Proctor said… Harper was HBP by Hamel? Who knew.We were at that game, and it (along with the stolen base of home) was a big factor in the Wonkling's falling in love with baseball.

  12. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 7:58 PM

It's funny, but nobody remembers that, if I recall correctly, the Phillies blew us out that game. All that mattered was Harper stealing home.

  13. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:02 PM

David, I just remember Werth breaking his wrist and the taunts of the Phoolies when it happened.

  14. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:04 PM

"Span and Bernadina have better numbers against Cliff Lee"Does it really matter what Bernadinas numbers are against a particular pitcher this year. Chances are Cliff Lee would carve him up for 4 Ks.

  16. karlkolchak - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Nats 128 – you said it. I'm not starting Bernie over anyone in that game. Love the Shark, but his measly 5 RBIs in 106 ABs this season is pretty telling regarding how awful he's been at the plate this year.

  17. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:08 PM

    Ramos starts again tonight.

  18. karlkolchak - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Sorry, make that 137 ABs for Bernie with 5 runs driven in. Yuck.

  19. BigCat - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:10 PM

Ha ha….yes…ol Shark has had a pretty rough year at the plate

  20. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:10 PM

karlkolchak, you know what the Fortune Cookie says about small sample sizes: Sample size is for you to try not to eat as a meal

  21. BigCat - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:11 PM

As a matter of fact, Shark is lucky to have a job

  22. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:11 PM

AJ Cole replacing Taylor Jordan on the Future's Game roster.

  23. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:12 PM

After my slightly negative post on Bernadina, I do believe he will win a game for the Nats this year. That catch to save the game in Houston last year was amazing.Bernadina needs to be used more as a late inning defensive replacement and you just hope he starts to hit.

  24. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:13 PM

"AJ Cole replacing Taylor Jordan on the Future's Game roster."Seriously?

  25. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:14 PM

The only player in the Nats organization who owns Cliff Lee is Danny Espinosa: 7-19, with 3 HR and a 2B. .368/.368/.895. Bring him up!

  26. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:15 PM

Haren on the hill. We gotta swing the lumber. Gotta make John-Boy bring his pitches in the zone. Can't chase that little sinker/slider he throws.

  28. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:16 PM

Section 222, I make the same comment I did on Bernadina: Does it really matter what Espinosas numbers are against a particular pitcher this year. Chances are Cliff Lee would carve him up for 4 Ks.

  30. Nats 128 - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:18 PM

    The posts are funny today.

  31. BigCat - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Shark needs to keep his upper body still when he loads. He rocks his whole body back…..ah it useless with Eck though. I'm not going down the Eck road anymore

  32. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:22 PM

"Shark needs to keep his upper body still when he loads. He rocks his whole body back…..ah it useless with Eck though. I'm not going down the Eck road anymore"Yeah, we better fire Eck quick before he ruins all the hot bats!

  33. John C. - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:28 PM

Eric, we all know that when the bats are hot it is despite Eckstein, when the bats are cold it is because of Eckstein. Get with the program!

128, Danny would probably manage a popup don't you think? I hear he's really figured it out down in Syracuse.

  36. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:38 PM

John C, perhaps a "/sarcasm" was in order to conclude my post ;).

Ryan Howard out 6-8 weeks. Doubt he plays again since the Phils will be out of it by then.

  41. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:49 PM

"LaRoche is our lowest avg and he's hitting over .300 in his last 50 games. I like."Another one we should've gotten rid of while we still had a reason. We've really missed some golden opportunities to shed people this season.

Sorry JD, but Espi has a special place in my dark heart. He hurt the team with his stubborn refusal to admit he was injured on the long west coast road trip. Plus, I'm skeptical that he's turned it around as some have claimed just because he had a couple of multi-hit games down on the farm.Rendon's my guy at 2B. I called for it well before it happened, and he's done everything we hoped for and more.

  47. karlkolchak - Jul 8, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Boz is losing his mind–thinks the Nats could pry David Price away from the Rays for, get this–Detwiler, Moore, Espinosa and Cole.If I were Rizzo, I'd make that trade 100 times out of 100, but the Rays GM would have to have his head examined. Talk about overvaluing your own players.http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/wp/2013/07/08/thomas-boswell-on-scott-hairston-trade-and-its-implications/

  48. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Just giving you some grief 222. In truth there are some hopeful signs coming from Syracuse. Even before he started hitting the K rate was well down which indicated to me that something is clicking. From my perspective, it's always good when one of your players resurrects his value even if it's for trade purposes only so from that point of view at least I am pulling for Danny to make it all the way back. In addition, I hate to question a player's motivation in any regard because I am pretty sure that none of us know the whole story although some sure claim they do.

  49. Eric - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Only thing I've really read about Espi in here is that he's gotten some hits of late. Don't really recall reading anything about a turnaround.I think your dark heart might be coloring the words you read, 222 ;)

  50. JaneB - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:08 PM

As if I needed another reason to hope Dan Haren is sharp tonight, the fact that the last team he needs to beat is the Phillies make me want it even more. GYFNG. And may Lannan be serving meatballs tonight. Definitely eat some face tonight guys!

  51. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:11 PM

I believe another 5-2 week is a good poddibility.

  52. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:12 PM

I'm sure the Rays would be thrilled to have our once interesting, now turned injured and disappointing, young players. That's how they built their perennial contender, right?

  53. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:13 PM

Ten runs might not be enough to win tonight. For either team.

  54. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Karl, YES to David Price + they would have to throw in a AA outfielder.

  55. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:17 PM

I still hope Rizzo pursues Bud Norris.

  56. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Amanda Comak ‏@acomak 39sDavey excited about the addition of Scott Hairston. "More the kind of player we need. A veteran presence on the bench, not some youngster."Davey said he plans to start him a game or two. Seems like Hamels is the obvious choice.

  57. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Ghost, I am pretty sure Rizzo will try to shore up the rotation if Det is not a short term thing. I don't believe for a moment that either he or Davie consider Taylor Jordan as a viable long term option for this year.

  58. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Ghost,'they would have to throw in a AA outfielder.'If you mean Goodwin, I wouldn't do it. I think the package as is rumored is not unreasonable.

  59. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Danks from the White Sox. When Det comes back (if he does) he has to go in the bullpen, like it or not. Can't rely on him for more than 3-4 innings, but those 3-4 innings can be great.

  60. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:30 PM

It's not unreasonable because Price will be out of their price range (no pun intended) shortly and if at least 2 out of the 4 players pan out it's not a terrible haul for them.

  61. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:31 PM

LOL on Davey… thought he loved the kids–well, he does until they don't perform.

  62. jeffwx - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Hiram, the pinch hit batting average I quoted for the Braves is not a small sample but 100 ABs.You can easily check the numbers yourself for various teams without calculating it at:http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/batting/type/expanded-2

  63. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Ghost, I like Bud Norris a lot. So do a lot of other teams, I'm sure.

  64. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:33 PM

I would love Price, but if I were the Rays I'd take up a collection or get the local pols to up the taxes.

  65. baseballswami - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:38 PM

    Dave's can be mean.

  66. jeffwx - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Well, praying for rain tonight didn't work. One more shower near gametime and that's it.Maybe Thursday ?

  67. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:41 PM

NatsLady, Other than Longoria the Rays don't have a history of retaining their players once they become expensive. I wouldn't rule that idea out at all. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on the package outlined above. I just wouldn't give away our only remaining position prospect.

  68. jeffwx - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:41 PM

NL, who is our 5th starter…Why all the Det detrimental comments. He pitched well before his DL stint.

  69. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Apparently the Cubs are going to pay part of Hairston's 2014 salary. They must like Pineyro.

  70. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:42 PM

jeffwx–no, he didn't. He pitched well for a few innings before his DL stint.

  71. karlkolchak - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:44 PM

Ghost Of Steve M. – yep, we might be able to get Norris for a reasonable (ahem) price, unlike Price.

  72. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:44 PM

Just WOW on the Tweeter from Amanda quoting Davey "not some youngster".

  73. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:45 PM

I know some are down on Goodwin based on his BA which is just .259 but if you look under the covers you will find that he gets on base at a .355 clip, has a little pop and plays good defense and this is his 1st year at AA which is a tough level to master. He's not close to the majors but he's not failing by any means. I would also not get to worked up about the stolen base/caught steeling stats because as a team we don't run very much, I don't think the brass likes the risk/reward outcomes very much.

  74. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:46 PM

Oh please NL. Why would you say that? Five of his eight starts were quality starts before he went on the DL in May. His ERA at that point was 2.76.

  75. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:46 PM

I'll need to hear how Davey said it. It sounds very mean: "not some youngster" but Davey has been a big fan of Moore for a long time. I have a hard time believing he meant it the way it reads.

  76. jeffwx - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:48 PM

NL, I disagree.Between April 6-May 15,he had a 2.76 ERA, giving up1,1,1,2,4,3,2 before getting injured.I'd love to have that Ross be our number 5 again.Give em some love.

  77. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:48 PM

Norris can be had I'm sure and since the Nats get him under team control longer they can give up a top prospect pitcher.

  78. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:49 PM

JD, I would want a younger outfielder from Tampa in that deal if they wanted AJ Cole.

  79. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Check his gamelog. Detwiler had exactly two above-average starts–in April. He had two Slightly above average starts in April. He's had one start since that was above Game Score of 50 (average) on May 10. Even for a No. 4-5 that is not a good record. He has gone 7 innings twice (in April). In fact, in his entire career he has never pitched past the 7th inning. So you know when Det is in the game the bullpen will be also.http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=detwiro01&t=p&year=

  80. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Lots of folks seem to think it's no big deal to stick a starter in the bullpen. I know Det was there last year when Wang got his tryout, and RossO is there now. But despite many calls from this board, Lannan never went to the bullpen. Nor did Livo (at least not with us). Nor will Haren, nor will, in my opinion, Det.

  81. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Detwiler did a good job with it last year, at least.

  82. JD - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Ghost, I would include Cole in a package to get a quality starter. From what I read (Keith Law just scouted him in person) the quality of his secondary pitches does not appear to be improving all that much and even though he has electric stuff he may just end up being a back end bullpen guy.

  83. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:53 PM

222, I agree that it is difficult for a starter to adjust to bullpen life. Some do, some don't. But what do you do with a guy like Detwiler who can't seem to make it past the 5th inning and who is still young?

  84. baseballswami - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:54 PM

Det in the WBC was just amazing. If he could just do that- pitching, mound presence, the whole package. I want that.

  85. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:56 PM

You can disagree all you want, but my eyes also see a guy who does not have the stamina and the secondary pitches to make it three times around the lineup. He's young, but he's not THAT young, and he went over 100 pitchers (107) exactly once this year.

  86. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:58 PM

NatsLady, you are now sounding like me pre-July 21 last year.

  87. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Norris would be a nice addition.

  88. baseballswami - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:00 PM

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Tyler Moore the best. He seems to be a great kid, the veterans have all praised his attitude, work ethic and talent. He is too under- developed to rot on the bench. I might even look up a video of his Rigers Centre bombs last season. That Syracuse team is just loaded.

  89. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:00 PM

swami, I fell into that trap with CMW–judging by one great game (or two) and expecting that kind of performance, or close to it, on a regular basis.

  90. karlkolchak - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:03 PM

Right now, Cole is not going to fetch a big return on his own. Remember, he was dealt to us with two other pitchers for Morse alone at the start of this season. It might have been different had he been dominant at Potomac this year, but he has instead been up and down. Face it, folks, prying a decent starter out of another team is going to hurt the system. Getting someone like Price would leave it resembling Death Valley.

  91. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:05 PM

NL, you're being unfair. Stras has gone more than 7 innings how many time? Just two all year long. Only Gio and JZnn can be counted on for 7 at this point. Our bullpen is involved in every game. That's a ridiculous expectation you are setting up.I did check the game logs, actually. That was the basis of my last comment. Before his injury, Det was pitching well. He had four out of five good starts in April, and one out of two good ones in May. He went 6.2 innings and gave up only 2 runs on May 10. I don't know what his Game Score was for that start, and I don't really care. I'd take that result any day of the week. In his next start, he got hurt. You've never liked Det. I remember comments about his physique and toughness last year (though I think you kind of backed off after Game 4), but you should at least be fair. It's just factually inaccurate to say he never gets out of the 5th inning. He did so 5 out of 8 times this year before his injury, and in three of those starts he pitched into or through the 7th. Are you mistaking him for Nate Karns?

  92. Joe Seamhead - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:05 PM

No way to prove future predictions, but I think A.J. Cole is going to be a front line ML pitcher. Patience, Grasshoppers.

  93. karlkolchak - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:06 PM

I'm with NatsLady on Detwiler. He and John Lannan may not physically resemble each other at all, but their career numbers and their inability to pitch deep into games IS eerily similar. At 27 with 69 career starts under his belt, Det should be nearing the prime of his career. Instead, he looks like a number 5 starter at best.

  94. NatsLady - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:10 PM

I never, EVER commented on Detwiler's physique. That was other people, who suggested he might need to put on some weight/strength in his legs. I also TRY not to comment on people's mental strength or lack thereof because I can't read minds, and I'm not there to see how hard they work on a day-to-day basis, either physically or in video sessions, unless it's reported.

  95. baseballswami - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Have you seen John Lannan lately? He has gotten to be a big, strong man. Do not take him lightly or expect to see the John Lannan of a few years back. He has become one tough customer. He also has brought his bat with him. I think our guys will not be taking anything for granted tonight. I have heard many experts say that lefties take longer to reach maturity. Good lefties are also a great commodity. Still going to hold on to the hope that Det will bloom.

The NL team is Wright, Carlos Gonzalez, Michael Cuddyer and Harper. The AL team is Robinson Cano, Prince Fielder, Chris Davis and some guy he didn't announce. Not sure why Wright didn't pick Stanton.

  101. baseballswami - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:26 PM

20 and a starter for the asg– AND in the home run derby???? Wow!

  102. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:28 PM

ESPN is televising tonight's game. Is it not on MASN too?

  103. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:30 PM

DP, per Mark, above:TV: MASN2, ESPN (outside D.C. market), MLB.tv

  104. mick - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:32 PM

I actually felt that Det was going to have a break out season back in Spring training, kinda like the year J Zim is having…

  105. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:35 PM

It will be lacked on ESPN locally. But of course we can see it on MASN

  106. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:36 PM

    Actually MASN2

  107. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:37 PM

It's on MASN2. The O's game is on MASN.

  108. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:38 PM

Mick have you abandonbed the thought the Nats will end up in 4th behind the Mets? You had that about 2-3 weeks ago.I have had Nats wiinning all aling and still do.

  109. mick - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:38 PM

Nats are 4 back for both division and wild card

  110. mick - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan you may be right

  111. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:40 PM

    Correct.

  112. baseballswami - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:43 PM

It might be on masn two, but the grid doesn't show it- it shows repeated half hour shows of ESPN. Can't figure out how to record it and have to leave.

  113. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Speaking of MASN2, they are showing Davey's interview on the pregame where he said he liked veterans on the bench, "not some youngsters." It's pretty much what it sounds like. Ouch.

  114. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:51 PM

I mentioned that yesterday, but people didn't think that was important.

  115. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 10:52 PM

It shows on my comcast grid, and I am watching Nat's extra.

  116. paul brandt - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:04 PM

Sofa, Davey can say that since he is in his walk year although he's never been too shy about saying what he feels.

  117. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Sec. 3, My Sofa said… Speaking of MASN2, they are showing Davey's interview on the pregame where he said he liked veterans on the bench, "not some youngsters." It's pretty much what it sounds like. Ouch. July 08, 2013 6:45 PM That's the Davey we know, speaking the truth even if it is difficult to hear.

  118. paul brandt - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:08 PM

Scott Hairston looks good in the new uni…like it.

  119. Get Your Re(n)d On - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:10 PM

Detwiler was always the weak link in the rotation this year. And that includes Haren.

  120. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:10 PM

I seem to remember A LOT of people outraged over Haren being listed as the #4 over Detwiler.

  121. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:11 PM

Span at home hits so much better than Span away. Span hits lots to first or second baseman on tge road.

  122. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:14 PM

NL, sorry I misremembered your previous comments about Det. But you were not fairly representing his performance this year when you said he "can't seem to make it past the 5th." Of that I am sure.Think John Lannan has some incentive to pitch well tonight? Facing the guy who essentially replaced him in the rotation. Yikes. I sure hope we light him up, if only to avoid having to hear "we should have just kept Lannan" tomorrow.

  123. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:14 PM

2 of 3 well, but hit right at fielders. Now need Haren to pitch to ability.

  124. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:16 PM

Great sign to start the game. A single.

  125. Section 222 - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:16 PM

speaking the truth even if it is difficult to hear.Oh please. Gratuitous slap at guys who are no longer with the team and did their best. What purpose did that serve? I'm not impressed in the least. Or was it a message to Rizzo — get me some guys who can hit for the bench please.

  126. Get Your Re(n)d On - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Hear it tonight. We should have just kept Lannan.

  127. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Matt Kemp going to the DL and eligible to come back during the Nats series. Maybe the Nats will miss him for the entire series.

  128. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:19 PM

2 stolen bases, and the throw was on time to third, but nowhere close to the bag.

  129. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:20 PM

"Or was it a message to Rizzo?"That's my assumption. Doesn't make much sense to snipe at Moore.

  130. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:20 PM

    Can't field or pitch….

  131. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:21 PM

Haren at least not giving up homers, but put glove in front of you not between legs.

  132. BigCat - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:21 PM

Someone was talkin bout a short leash. I've seen enough

  133. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:21 PM

That was a tough or impossible play for Haren to make. Not his fault for not fielding. Is his fault for giving up a hard hit ball.

  134. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:23 PM

    Oh Dan. Settle down.

  135. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:23 PM

    Sigh..

  136. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:23 PM

We look like a Little League team out there.

  137. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:23 PM

He can at least learn to duck or get out of the way for his own protection….

  138. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:24 PM

    I thought Haren didn't walk guys…..

  139. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:24 PM

Haren is back — same Haren, same result a-coming.and you know, Ramos is not nearly as good defensively as Zook. Ball through his wickets just now — and yesterday, he dropped two balls at plays at the plate — which he's famous for.Ramos will cost us as many games behind the dish as he'll win for us with his bat. A wash.

  140. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:24 PM

So we are essentially forfeiting this game….

  141. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:24 PM

BigCat said… Someone was talkin bout a short leash. I've seen enough Turn a doubleplay here. Please.

  142. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:24 PM

Haren rarely ealks anyone from 0-2 to a walk.

  143. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:24 PM

Let's just write this one off folks. Rizzo is going to acquire a pitcher, he has to.

  144. BigCat - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Get his butt out of there. Haven't we seen enough. Gonna be 5-0 shortly

  145. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:25 PM

I'm really trying to be positive here… But Dan Haren.. Unh…

  146. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Got him right where he wants him at 1-2…..

  147. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Put in all the backups. Haren is an automatic loss every time. I hope he never pitches for the nats again after tonight. And whomever thought he was ready is an even bigger fool

  148. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:26 PM

I like how FP referred to Haren's "injury." Stop it!! Even Haren admitted there was no injury. Haren is man enough to admit his problem is performance, and not laying off on some faux injury. So why does F.P. keep the make believe 'saving face' story of an injury going?

  149. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Here come those that seemingly only show up when the Nats are behind.

  150. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:26 PM

As bad as Haren pitched. Had the Buffalo thrown the ball low not head jigh the Phils would score 0

  151. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Forget Haren, Ramos looks like he hasn't caught a big league game in six months. His mechanics back there are just awful. I know the guy hits. But I miss Zook behind the dish.

  152. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:26 PM

    He did no rehab, apparently….

  153. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:27 PM

He swung come get your eyes checked

  154. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Ramos dropped 2 yesterday that were in his glove at home….

  155. Drew - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:28 PM

A tempest. A sirocco. Dan Haren. They really blow.

  156. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:28 PM

@Fan since the Start: Because F.P. is just a worse homer than even Sunshine Bobby. F.P. could see the bright side of a tidal wave hitting the team bus.

  157. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Imagine it: Haren is one pitch away from being down 6-0.he walked a rank rookie.Haren is keeping the line moving!!!

  158. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:28 PM

I am sorry. I just don't know what to say anymore. Rizzo and the Nats seem inclined to end our winning streak.

  159. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Oh get over it seamhead it's the first inning. Everybody's 20 minutes late big deal.

  160. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:28 PM

First base ump cost us that run.Haren no fishing on a 3-2 count.

  161. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:29 PM

    Just pathetic.

  162. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:29 PM

Good. Haren is getting his pitch count way up there. He's liable to be gone by the third. As per usual.

  163. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:29 PM

    Sorry. Get over it ghost.

  164. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:29 PM

Can't believe Haren spotted them 2 but let's see how he throws the next 5 innings.

  165. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

What you want him to do. As i sai Ramos tgrow ball low Revere is out easily on the steal and phils sore 0.

  166. paul brandt - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

relax, we are lucky its not 5 or 6-0…we will be fine if we hit like we should and Haren will settle down…he got hosed on that check swing I think but we're fine.

  167. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

I feel very lucky that the score is not 6-0. 3 singles, 2 walks, a wild pitch and some vicious fans….

  168. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Which Ramos' tgrow or ump's call?

  169. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Haren should pitch in the Home Run Derby.

  170. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

In hind sight it's only 2-0 but Haren did nothing that inning to really make me believe he has anything left in the tank…This is disappointing… Out of 10+ plus starts, he has only had 3 (maybe) good ones….

  171. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Yep Ramos looks like a big stiff back there. Balls through the wickets, not getting down to block pitches — What really bothers me about him is how many balls at the plate he drops — Zook catches and tags on every play — Ramos either blinks, or shys away afraid of contact, gets too excited — whatever the reason, it's gonna bite us one day

  172. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:31 PM

This guy a complete momentum killer. He has to go this week. Is Stevie wonder available?

  173. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:32 PM

Haren was not good, but should have not given up a run with an accuratr throw to third.

  174. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:32 PM

I feel it should be 0-0

  175. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:32 PM

And all we had to do long ago was just stick with Lannan — how easy (and cheaper) would that have been?

  176. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:33 PM

And the face of the franchise is no match for Johnny L

  177. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:33 PM

I am not sure that we can hit this guy.

  178. NatsFanSinceStart - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Phillies fan still booing Werth: Give it up, losers

  179. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:34 PM

    Wow the ump sucks too.

  180. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:35 PM

    Nice Werth! Infield single!

  181. BigCat - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Sorry about the negativity. I will try and be better. We've been playing so good lately …..sigh

  182. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Whelp.. All we can hope for at this point is that Dan settle down… And The offense keeps chugging…

  183. Secret wasian man - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:36 PM

Big cat I too don't want to be negative. But it's John lannan. C'mon.

  184. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:37 PM

We got this in the bag . 9-6 final

  185. paul brandt - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:38 PM

David Proctor said…Haren should pitch in the Home Run Derby.July 08, 2013 7:30 PMDP, good one, maybe Harper will bring Haren with him as his pitcher.

  186. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:38 PM

We have trouble with guys with slow fast balls.

  187. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:40 PM

They should cheer Werth. They don't have to pay his salary, and it is not as though the Phils were his first team. Werth was a loss-leader for us and we are okay with that.

  188. Drew - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:40 PM

To those pining for John Lannan: Puh-leeze.He has been terrible this year. His ERA is 5.15 — the worst of his career.Dan Haren stinks on toast, but that's no reason to long for Lannan.

  189. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:41 PM

We'll get Lannan second time around.

  190. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Lets see how consistent Barksdale is with the high strike if Haren throws it.

  191. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:41 PM

What is the over/under for this inning in terms of pitches and runs?I say 24 pitches and 2 runs. Hope I am wrong….

  192. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:41 PM

How do you k on 88 mph fast ball.

  193. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:41 PM

High K is being called… Lets see if Haren gets it…

  194. David Proctor - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:43 PM

"High K is being called… Lets see if Haren gets it…"I hope Haren doesn't even try to throw upstairs…

  195. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:43 PM

Drew – totally agree… Don't think Lannan wanted to be here… If there ever was a P that I wanted this off season, it was Lohse… And every time he plays, I get envious…Most know I don't care for Dan Haren as a National… But at this point, I just hope he pitches decently enough to keep us in the game…The first inning could have been worst…

  196. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:45 PM

    16 and ,0

  197. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:46 PM

Scouting report says throw inside i dont think so.

  198. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:46 PM

Ben Revere hitting .299 now. He started slow but really hitting well in the last month.

  199. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:47 PM

What a play by Desi. How isn't he an All Star?

  200. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 8, 2013 at 11:47 PM

At this point, I feel for Haren… I doubt he wants to suck.. And I do think he tries… But, he is just ineffective…What i do like is that he didnt use the phantom injury as an excuse…. I gained respect for him…
