Game 94: Nats at Marlins

Jul 13, 2013, 7:52 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images

Losers of four of their last five, the Nationals will send Dan Haren (4-10, 6.00 ERA) to the mound in Miami Saturday night to face rookie standout and N.L. All-Star Jose Fernandez (5-5, 2.83). Fernandez has yet to lose at Marlins Park and will be making his first start against the Nats. He last pitched on July 7 in St. Louis and allowed three earned runs for the first time since May.

Washington took an ugly loss in the series opener on Friday night, watching Stephen Strasburg falter with the worst start of his young career. Miami has won two straight games after losing their previous five after a terrific month of June. Haren will take a stab at the Fish in his seventh career start against the franchise. He holds a 1-4 record with a 3.43 ERA in 39 1/3 total innings vs. the Marlins.

Anthony Rendon gets the night off with Steve Lombardozzi playing at second. Other than that change, the lineup is the same as it was on Friday.

Enjoy the game…

  8. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Clip doesn't get the high strike.

  9. David Proctor - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:45 AM

That was a strike on the last pitch by clip. A little high, but a strike. We're not going to get any close calls anymore tonight though.

  10. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Why doesn't TCM have pitch track.I read the news today, oh boyabout a lucky Dan who pitched the gameAnd though the news was rather sad.I just had to laugh.I saw the pitch track

  15. Knoxville Nat - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:48 AM

Late to the party and I'm blacked out here in Knoxville. So reading the posts, did Harper get tossed for arguing balls and strikes? Was it real bad or Harper showing some frustration?

  16. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:48 AM

    Yes, Knoxville, he did.

  17. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:50 AM

  18. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:50 AM

It wasn't the worst call we've seen all week, and I haven't seen most of the game, so I don't know if that's been a strike tonight, but it looked about 2 baseballs off the plate to me.

  19. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:50 AM

  49. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Lombo strikes out (I think). .At any rate, he's back in the dugout. Ramos is up.

Tracy singles, Span bunts into a FC. 1 out, Span on first.

  81. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:21 AM

Tracy with an actual hit. Then out on a bad bunt by Span. Span now on first, though which is better speed. Very bad that Harper got ejected, no one to pinch run for Tracy.

  82. Scott Margenau - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:21 AM

Omg!! Get this trial off my tv!!!

  85. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:22 AM

Desi with a single. Runners on 1st and 2nd, one out.

  86. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:23 AM

smh Span. Come on. You ask him to play small ball and he just cost the Nats the go ahead run as Tracy scores on that.

  87. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:24 AM

OK, Let's leave Hannity and his ilk outside. Back to the game, folks.Desmond singles to right, Span to second.

  88. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:24 AM

WIld pitch. Span to 3B. Hairston up, can he cash it in???

  89. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:25 AM

Dubious "strike" one there.Wild pitch, both runners move up.

  90. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:26 AM

yes….back to the game….movie is ovahhhhhhh!!!!!

  91. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:27 AM

well…i pitched the wrong time to turn on the ball gamestrike 3

  92. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:28 AM

He calls that low strike again.

  93. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:28 AM

Hairston is hitting for Harper, who got tossed, you'll recall. He pulls a couple of liners, but foul.Almost another WP. Nice save. And Hairston whiffs. 2 outs.

  94. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:29 AM

    speechless

  95. David Proctor - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:29 AM

Harper puts that ball into play. Hairston couldn't. Hairston hits lefties, not righties.

  96. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:29 AM

oh yeah runners in scoring position.time to turn it up….i mean down.

  97. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:29 AM

Let's see if Ryan Zimmerman acquits himself well.Hmm. Not so much. He waves at breaking balls off the plate and low. We go baja 10.

  98. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:29 AM

Just makes Ryan Zimmerman look bad there. How frustrating.

  99. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:29 AM

OK, Zim had to swing at the second pitch because he was going to call it a strike. But NO WAY did he have to swing at the 3rd pitch.

  100. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:30 AM

What the hell was that Ryan… That low K gets on my nerves…

  101. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:30 AM

WP…one of the Nats most potent offensive weapons.

  102. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:31 AM

David Proctor said… Harper puts that ball into play. Hairston couldn't. Hairston hits lefties, not righties. July 13, 2013 10:29 PM That is on point.

  103. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:31 AM

That's what closers mean when they say they play on hitters' aggressiveness. That was not a smart at-bat by Zim.

  104. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:31 AM

    so they pull zimmm…hurt

  105. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:32 AM

What? Hechevarria has replaced Zim at 3B???? Stockton must be drunk.

  106. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:32 AM

Obviously, he can't tell that from the fastball. Either he can't see it, or he is totally guessing. Neither alternative fills me with confidence, speaking for myself. Neither does Tracy at third. Stammen pitching, I'm OK with for now.

  107. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:32 AM

omg….this is worse than the movie

  108. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:32 AM

  110. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:33 AM

Oh no. Oh no. Tracy……..what can you say.

  111. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:33 AM

  112. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:33 AM

  113. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:33 AM

  114. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:34 AM

The part of R. Zimmerman is being played tonight by Chad "Third and Long" Tracy.

  115. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:34 AM

Craig Stammen is NOT the guy for this situation.

  116. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:34 AM

  117. Scott Margenau - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:34 AM

Davey needs to be fired. Tracy sub? Idiot.

  118. Sec. 1 D, seat 10 T, My Sofa - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:34 AM

  119. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:35 AM

I'd rather Rendon be over there…

  120. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:35 AM

  121. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:35 AM

  123. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:36 AM

  125. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:37 AM

Ok Mick im usually with you here. This is a baseball post. Nobody cares what your political views are. And it takes a racist to know a racist. Those comments were uncalled for. Im surprised you haven't blamed Georg Bush for the NATS crappy season. WE ARE DONE MY MAN DONE!!

  129. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:37 AM

I don''t know if Davey leaving is the answer…I now believe Nats are just not very good…full lineup back 8 games total and they are averaging about 2 runs per game… the sample size is enough to make that assessment.

  130. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:38 AM

  145. nats guy - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:42 AM

The sucking sound you hear is the sound of the season ending.

  146. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:42 AM

Span can't get a bunt down. Soriano blows the save. Tracy throws a ball away. Hairston K's with men on 3rd and 2nd and 1 out. RZim K's with the game on the line. Nats had 2 ducks on the pond in the 10th and couldn't do it.That is a horrible team loss. Haren did his job and so did Storen and Clippard.

  147. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:42 AM

yes…this series will be the low point, DPIt can't get much worse

  148. David Proctor - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:42 AM

I'm still not giving up on the season, but this has to change. Charlie Slowes said it best: "The Nationals snatched defeat from the jaws of victory." Good teams just don't do that. I don't know what it is. I've seen worse teams go on runs at the end of the season, but the level of fundamental play just has to get better.. The defense, the hitting. The pitching is fine.

  149. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:43 AM

Davey is tired and I think he wants out… I think there is a better than 50% chance Davey will resignmy prediction of 85 losses and an 8 game losing streak a while ago does not seem too far fetched now

  150. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:43 AM

I better hear that Rendon is dinged up. There is NO EXCUSE for him not being in this game!!!! And someone should have tackled Harper before he went and looked at video==> it was only going to rile him up if he was right.

  151. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:43 AM

I asked it earlier… I will ask again… Why the hell was C Tracy in the game… Rendon should have been over there…We were pathetic, once again, with RiSP…. Just pathetic…

  152. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:44 AM

Maybe time to shake things up

  153. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:44 AM

NatsLady said… Rendon should have pinch run for Tracy. I don't get it AT ALL. Not at all! July 13, 2013 10:41 PM That's Davey for you. No outs and man on 1st and the slowest runner. Of course.

  154. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:45 AM

Davidthis season is over as far as post season and even a winning record, Davey did not do a good job tonight and there is no defense of him and this team right now

  155. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:45 AM

I think Rizzo gets rid of Ekstien to shake it up giving Davey the out he needs.

  156. rmoore446 - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:45 AM

Yes, David, this is rock bottom or at least I hope it is.

  157. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:46 AM

I think Rizzo gets rid of Ekstien to shake it up giving Davey the out he needs to resign.

  158. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:47 AM

David Proctor, you owe me an apology. Not even close to a strike on Harper in fact 2 of those pitches weren't close to strikes:http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/numlocation_io.php-pitchSel=605228&game=gid_2013_07_13_wasmlb_miamlb_1&batterX=40&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3.gif

  159. phil dunton - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:47 AM

Davey is making Manny Acta look good.

  160. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:47 AM

I think Davey is an honorable man will step down, however, it is not all on him…this team is simply not a contender…the teams best players do not play like their best players…Zim lost me for good tonight

  161. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:47 AM

The one night that Haren gives a beauty of a performance… We poop on the effort…I've not been this pissed after a Nats loss in a long damn time…

  162. Dan Strong - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:48 AM

This team is an absolute disaster. There is nothing else to say about it. Let's just accept what last year really was… A fluke.

  163. Secret wasian man - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:49 AM

The stars on this team are to blame. ALR IAN ZImm just don't deliver in the clutch.

  164. mick - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:49 AM

    gang…welcome back to 2010

  165. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:49 AM

How do you end a 10-inning game with one of your best hitters on the bench??????? Someone ask Davey that question, please!

  166. ExposedinDC - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:49 AM

Unbelievably poor managed game……Rizzo has to consider a change

  167. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:50 AM

And then Soriano throws a fat f*ckin pitch over the plate to their BEST power hitter, maybe player…. I don't understand why they didnt walk him from the beginning….Just dumb…

  168. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:51 AM

Dan Strong said… This team is an absolute disaster. There is nothing else to say about it. Let's just accept what last year really was… A fluke. Whatever. There's no flukes over 162 games. Great pitching and 4.6+ runs per game.

  169. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:51 AM

I used to be mad at my team…though I can't complainThe coaches who taught weren't keen. They're holding them down.Turning it aroundKilling the team with their rules….yeahYou got to admit its getting better,a little better all the time(can't get much worse)

  170. JamesFan - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:52 AM

Let's face it, we have a good team playing badly and without determination or leadership. Rizzo needs to access some accountability. No more happy talk.As to the WashPost, I am a Nats fan, but the O's are a much more interesting team with more potential. I don't blame them for highlighting the O's.Harper, in 2013, you are a mediocre left fielder with nothing more than aveage numbers. Get real about your professional career–as should the rest of us. Potential does not win games. Production does.

  171. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:52 AM

Wait… I thought the number was 4.7????I'm so angry right now… Just unacceptable…

  172. Joe Seamhead - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:52 AM

We're not hitting, then last night our ace can't get through two innings, after hitting three guy his start before. Then Dan Haren gives us a pretty damn good start and we lose. Soriano gives it up in the bottom of the ninth. We can do nothing about it. The Braves play an all-who-are-these-guys outfield and beat the Reds. OK. Maybe we don't have this, and it's getting pretty hard to stay relaxed.

  173. Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:53 AM

Can someone please explain to me why rizzo didnt keep the same team as last year who won 98 games? To me, stick to what makes you great. So far, the Span trade has not lived up to its hype as we got the "lead off" player we "desperately" been needing since we moved to DC. Something is going on with this team. Whether Eck/Davey is changed their hitting approaches or the players feel the moral is down but something has to happen. Whether the nationals change is coaches, trading for a player to help the team and or trading some of our big contracts for minor leaguers.

  174. Secret wasian man - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:53 AM

AMEN MICK> ZIMM IS AWFUL. We can get guys making the minimum to strike out. I am truly sick sic sick of him and ALR. And DAVEY SHOULD STEP DOWN.

  175. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:54 AM

If Davey didn't want to pinch run with Rendon, how's about pinch-hitting Rendon for Hairston in that critical situation then Lombo goes to left field and Rendon to 2nd.The game was lost there.

  176. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:54 AM

Curse of the Beast, folksCurse of the Beast

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:55 AM

I did I said I woul. Watch the game with co comment.Harper was screwed twice and is not mature enough to get screwed and let it go.Second Davey did ,2 moves I said werr stupid snd proved to be. Why did Hairston come in.I was sure Rendon would come in and lombo to left.Soriano a fast ball high to be hit why? Then why double switch Tracy? Stupid. If you are going to soble switch stupidly twice you deserve to losr.Hsren pitched great. Storen and Clippard. soriano. Ecept one pitch..Also meant to fuss at Span. Bunt successfully if Desi got his single, we score.Again no hitting. When is Eck gone. Until we change dtrategies and hitting coach we will have trouble.Fire him I still think we can winCouldn',t possiblyhurt to fire him correct?

  178. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:55 AM

I understand the hitters didn't hit. I understand Rafi thew a meatball to Stanton. But that 10th inning–bottom and top–was a disaster! Tracy gets a hit. You have a guy on your bench who (a) can run and (b) CAN PLAY THIRD BASE!!!! What is WRONG with you, Davey??????

  179. rmoore446 - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:55 AM

Why not have Redon in there? I don't understand it. But then it was Harper who screwed the pooch by getting tossed. It messed up the bench something awful. Shame on him for what was a selfish, immature reaction.

  180. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:57 AM

DP @ 10:52 – I agree… But this loss stings and is just dumb as hell…

  181. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:57 AM

Haren had two excellent bunts. Get out there and show the position players how to do it!

  182. David Proctor - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:58 AM

Wow Steve M, I guess you're right. The pitch looked fine to me but that's well outside. Infuriating. This isn't on the ump's though. Harper has to learn to maintain his temper and we had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and couldn't cash in.

  183. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:58 AM

This is Davey's way to justify that he needs Espinosa back….It couldn't be Davey's fault

  184. burns15 - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:58 AM

JamesFan, we are not a good team playing badly. We are a mediocre team. Nothing more, nothing less. It is really disappointing to see a team with so much potential have an utter lack of heart. In fact, its embarassing. But at the end of the day, you are what your record is, and thats a.500 team. The Nats have been given every break possible (the rest of the NL East has played awful since the middle of April). Yet the Nats have kicked every opportunity down the drain. Very disheartening and extremely frustrating. Something needs to change for next season

  185. ExposedinDC - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:58 AM

How many days till redskins training camp ?

  186. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:58 AM

NL – folks gonna think you and I are the same person… Lol… We are saying the same thing…

  187. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:58 AM

Yes, we KNOW we're not hitting. That means a close game has to be well-managed–and this one wasn't! Unless Rendon has a sprained ankle or something. And he sure seemed fine in that interview!

  188. Secret wasian man - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:59 AM

get off Bryce. hes the only one with any heart. 2 guys in scoring position and 2 guys cant even make contact. one who is "the face of the franchise." Hey everybody. training camp starts in 12 days. RG3 RG3

  189. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:59 AM

If the would call strikes strikes and balls no would get tiled up it is fact that most impites atr terrible behind the plate that tick people off.I blame tge umps not the players. The umps need to be consistant. It is not hard.

  190. Nats 128 - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:00 AM

JamesFan clearly is a Angelos troll and most likely paid by the Orioles to troll Nats sites. What a complete loser. Has no clue.

  191. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:01 AM

You play of the win… Idc how many flipping games ARen played in straight… At the point of Ryan coming out… Rendon should have been in…Just ugh… Arrrggghhhhh….

  192. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:01 AM

Sadly, the players are probably asking the same Question that NL and Mrs B are asking.I think Davey has now lost his team's confidence in him. He's an old 70.

  193. David Proctor - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:01 AM

You are what your record says you are at the end of a season. You're not what your record says on July 13. I'm not defending the level of play up this point. Just pointing out that the season isn't over and teams have overcome much larger deficits than ours. But we need to change soon and every game is one less game to make up ground. We need some urgency.

  194. Secret wasian man - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:01 AM

good point NL I cant remember the last time Davey managed a good game. Does he even care? get him outta there.

  195. Secret wasian man - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:03 AM

David you cant make a turtle run fast. you cant make a hamburger a filet. And most importantly. "you cant polish a turd." ITS OVER

  196. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:03 AM

Agree MnF… Ump was definitely biased… We all saw and KNEW that wasn't a strike… It's terrible… Someone needs to hold these blues accountable..You are not bigger than the damn game… People don't pay to watch you screw shit up…

  197. jeffwx - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:03 AM

I have no confidence that Nats coaches will make the right decisions when they need to, to give the team critical wins in close games.

  198. NatsLady - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:04 AM

Yes, Bryce got jobbed. But Clip got jobbed too, and he didn't get himself thrown out of the game. My feeling (I know I'm repeating myself) is that Davey gets tired and loses focus toward the end of games. He has his plan, and sticks to it, but isn't flexible with changing situations, especially late in games. It's like he forgot Rendon's existence. Maybe he was upset about Harper, but you can't think about that now, have to deal with it later. Stammen did OK, but I think Davey should have used Krol first, and saved Stammen in case it went multiple extra innings. You need to save the guy who can give the most innings for last.I was appalled at Tracey's throw. There is no excuse for that.

  199. rmoore446 - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:05 AM

Sorry but there are boundaries that must be observed even when the umpire gets it wrong. You don't voluntarily take yourself out of a close game because you are angry at the umpire. That is just rookie dumb and Harper hurt his team.

  200. Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) - Jul 14, 2013 at 3:05 AM

I think a big change is coming. We will either trade for someone to help this team hitting, trade away some big name players (Zimmy, Werth or LaRoach) or a coach quits or gets fired. I say this because except for Span leading off and Rendon in for Espi, this is the same players as last year. So something has happened to cause them to not hit, especially in clutch. No more "I dont know what why we aren't hitting but we just aren't" type talk. Something has to change. I hope it is for the best.
