Game 101: Pirates at Nats

Jul 24, 2013, 7:22 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

Davey Johnson hasn't been given his regulars very many days off lately, certainly not with the Nationals struggling so mightily to score runs. But there's no question a few guys could probably use a breather, so tonight two of the biggest names from the lineup are sitting: Bryce Harper and Ian Desmond.

We'll find out Davey's reasoning in each case. It's not all that surprising to see Harper get a day off against a tough left-hander in Francisco Liriano. But it is surprising to see Desmond sitting against this pitcher. Again, we'll see what the reason is in each case.

The benching of those two leads to some other changes, most notably Anthony Rendon sliding over to shortstop for his first career start at that position. Steve Lombardozzi will be at second base. Scott Hairston, meanwhile will be leading off and playing left field.

Oh yeah, and Stephen Strasburg is on the mound, trying to stop this five-game losing streak. Updates to come, so please check back…

I heard that they were going to fire the Nats' coach in charge of teaching players to catch the ball after Storen coughed up the ball Monday night.

  2. NatsLady - Jul 25, 2013 at 1:55 AM

I wish Werth would have done that against Liriano, then we would not have seen Storen. Well, Ghost, you are right. You can't assume either Zim's hit or Werth's HR. But it is still unbelievably aggravating.

NatsLady said… I HATE DREW STOREN!!!!!!!!!Calm down, you don't hate him. You are just angry at his lack of getting it done.

Via Dan Kolko " "he importance of having a bullpen that can deliver shutdown innings late: If the #Nats put up a zero in the 9th, that homer wins it."

NatsLady, I agree with your 9:55 post.

  6. Secret wasian man - Jul 25, 2013 at 1:57 AM

Did Davey put our best pitcher in in the 9 th? No. Did he give the guys the best chance to win in the 9th? No. Did we score enough in the ninth to win the game? Yes. Thanks Davey. I will say every time WERTh homers the game is already lost. So although he is showing heart we need it when it really matters.

Blame Storen all you want. This is all on the manager for putting him in for this situation. I know Clippard worked last night, but his head is on straight. Really after Storen's last outing would ANYONE here put him in with the game on the line?

  8. NatsLady - Jul 25, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Ghost, you are right. I don 't know why I am even posting in a game thread….But why can't we have one cleaning inning?

Unknown – I'm beginning to wonder/think if Abad is getting the HRod treatment…But if Abad goes, that leaves us with only 1 LHP… No good…

If we dont tie it Strasburg gets the loss. I explain this to you a couple weeks ago, you seem not to understand official scoring.I did it for about 10 years so even Storen shouldlose he wont lose.

    Lol… I swear Ghost and I are not the same person… Lol…NL – I think DJ uses Storen wrong…

  12. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 25, 2013 at 1:59 AM

Davey is not a psychologist. Either the Stanford-grad gets his head together or have him ship out. I thought he was way too glib after blowing the NLDS and I see nothing that shows he was ready for this season….

Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) said… Via Dan Kolko " "he importance of having a bullpen that can deliver shutdown innings late: If the #Nats put up a zero in the 9th, that homer wins it."That's just plain stupidity by Kolko. Melancon is pitching to Ryan Zimmerman if it's 1-0 and the rewind button ain't working to know the outcome.

Thank you Nats 106. Thank you. And people defend Davey. He Stinks. Can this guy Rizzo. NOW!!!!!!

  15. NatsLady - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:00 AM

I have seen Fredi put Kimbrell in in these situations, down one run, saw him do it at least twice. Both times Barves came back in the 9th and won it.

  16. JayB - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:01 AM

Bowden that is just the latest example of drew costing nats a game

  17. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:01 AM

    It is discretionary, no?

  18. JaneB - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:01 AM

I feel awful for Tim Hudson and Young Jr. Grateful we haven't had such an injury this year. We can say we hate these guys, we can say all kinds of stuff about them. But hearing about Hudson and the comments about the ankle were all I needed to remember that these are PEOPLE, and that at any moment something awful can happen to them. And sometimes it does. And "awful" does not, in my estimation, include a jerk umpire with an inconsistent strike zone, or a formerly lights out pitcher losing confidence in themselves, or even being in 4th place. Though I can't say I'll be saying that if we land in 5th place.

    I didnt see a tag…

  20. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:02 AM

    Denard, you are the greatest!

  21. Nats106 - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:02 AM

Dang just missed. Oh well. Strasburg looked great

  22. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:03 AM

    Wow…. Screwed by the blues…

  23. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:04 AM

Thank God that the Braves won! Otherwise, we would have been in fourth in the loss column.

  24. William O. Douglas Loeffler - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Yeah, we lost because of the umpiring….

  25. Secret wasian man - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Wow disgraceful umpiring. Guess that guy will get a raise. PLEASE FIRE DAVEY THOUGH. He's jus pathetic.

  26. Nats106 - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:06 AM

Too bad Stras has to take another loss. He certainly deserved a better outcome-at least a no decision. Manassas, who are you referring to on the scoring? That's pretty basic stuff.

  27. Joe Seamhead - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:07 AM

The ump made a bad call, but Denard Span cost us the game, the season, and he kicks his dog.I'm sure Vince Coleman would've caught Walker's double.

  28. joemktg - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:08 AM

Averaging 6.5 hits/game since All Star game. They need to find 3-4 more hits per game.

  29. Secret wasian man - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:09 AM

Is anybody going to question why drew Storen? Time for Davey to blame Stras.

  30. ExposedinDC - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:24 AM

Thank goodness I have to work tomorrow and won't be able to watch the game…. Beginning to understand the definition of insanity
