Game 103: Mets at Nats

Jul 26, 2013, 4:00 PM EST

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

It's a beautiful day for a ballgame, so how 'bout we play two? We've got a day-night doubleheader here between the Nationals and Mets, and the various results could actually be significant. The Nats currently lead New York by only two games in the NL East, so a Mets sweep incredibly would leave the two clubs tied in the standings. A Nationals sweep, on the other hand, would guarantee they'd be back in sole possession of second place in the division.

Jordan Zimmermann gets the start in Game 1 this afternoon against right-hander Jenrry Mejia, making his season debut after dealing with an elbow injury. Davey Johnson is going with his same lineup from yesterday's win, including Steve Lombardozzi at second base and batting second. "I'm not changing a winning hand," the manager said, also speculating that Lombardozzi might try to beat him up if he wasn't playing after a 3-hit performance.

Ryan Mattheus, meanwhile, has been activated off the DL as the 26th man allowed for the doubleheader. The Nats will have to make a decision tonight, removing someone from the roster. They could just send Mattheus back to Syracuse, or they could demote another reliever. Drew Storen, a potential candidate for demotion, is battling the same flu Adam LaRoche had earlier in the week and probably is unavailable to pitch in either game today, according to Johnson.

Lots of updates to come from a long day at the ballpark, so please check back…

    And awayyyy we go…

  2. ExposedinDC - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:14 PM

I like it, Lombo deserves another start….2 in a row then take our cuts with Harvey

  3. JayB - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Flu….come on Davey….I know you want to provide endless cover for under-performance but that is just a joke. Knorr had it right….call them out at this point. Drew is stinking up the joint and Rizzo is taking away that card just like he took your Danny toy.

  4. joemktg - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:20 PM

I like Lombo in that spot: ride him till he starts to come down to earth, then swap him out with Desmond, moving Span into the 6 spot, then Ramos, then Lombo. Span is 9 for 27 since coming out of the leadoff spot. Haven't seen the stats, but it doesn't look like he's passing up on any good pitches as he did in the leadoff spot.

  5. JD - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:26 PM

JayB, So now you are moving into medical commentary?

  6. JayB - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Flu? Like it is Flu Season….everyone is getting it all over town?

  7. JayB - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:36 PM

I know nothing but CDC has risk of Flu at Minimal for VA and the whole US at this time.

  8. Mike J - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Because it would be smart with a doubleheader looming to voluntarily eliminate one of your pitching options, no matter what his recent struggles are. *SMH*

  9. JayB - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:37 PM

This is just like HROD are and back issues. When Rizzo and Davey need cover for poor performance of "their" guys…they get cover.

  10. JayB - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:39 PM

trust your eyes…Drew is no help right now. He is so f'ed up mentally I would not use him in a 10 – 0 blow out.

  11. A DC Wonk - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:40 PM

Off-topic-Friday-tidbits:- The Yankees’ lineup had Brent Lillibridge, who came into the game hitting .081/.105/.081, second in the order. (and, of course, he had an RBI in their 2-0 win, raising his average to .098)- Yankees as a team has seven HR's in July. (Alfonso Soriano has 8 in July)- Cardinals' Edward Mujica, after 45 games. has a 19/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio- Rockies' Wilton Lopez came into a 1-0 game (Rockies trailing), to pitch the ninth. He threw nine pitches, and left with the score 5-0. (Rockies ended up scoring 3 in the bottom of the 9th to lose 5-3).(for the record, his nine pitches were: ball, double, ball, double, flyout, ball/strike (or strike/ball), single, homer)

Flu? Like it is Flu Season….everyone is getting it all over town? No, but someone else on his very same team got it.Did you also disbelieve that ALR had it?

  14. hiramhover - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Unlike the mysterious but DL worthy ailments of HRod, Haren, et al, the flu actually is communicable.

  15. JayB - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:55 PM

No I do not believe much that Nats Doctors say…do you? In this case ALR could indeed have been sick. Flu…not likely…..but Davey would just say Flu for Drew because he just said it last week. Davey will say anything to excuse this players from accountability for poor performance.

  16. A DC Wonk - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:56 PM

hiramhover said… Unlike the mysterious but DL worthy ailments of HRod, Haren, et al, the flu actually is communicable.Whoa, dude, you're bringing some commonly known knowledge into this? ;-)

  17. A DC Wonk - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:58 PM

Davey will say anything to excuse this players from accountability for poor performance. What he says publicly and what he says privately are two different things.I'm happy he's not throwing Storen — a 25 year old with obvious problems with his mental toughness — under the bus.Calling him out further in public serves nobody — except, perhaps, to quell the frustration of some fans.

  18. pwilly - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Can anyone explain to me why Zimmermann is pitching today's game instead of tonight against Harvey?

  19. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:05 PM

pwilly, there could be some other reasons, and maybe a beat writer asked Davey, but one reason could be that Ohlendorf pitched 6 innings in relief of JZnn on Sunday, while JZnn only pitched 2 innings.

  20. hiramhover - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:06 PM

WonkI know, I know–doesn't really suit the tenor of recent game day threads, does it?How's this–Span sucks!! Davey is old!!!

  21. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Gentlemen's agreement to split the doouble header

  22. Donald - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:08 PM

Was wondering the same thing, pwilly. It could be just because he's next up in the rotation, but it kinda feels like we're conceding the game against Harvey already.

  23. Alphabet Soup Erik - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Very good point pwilly…because the Nats are hoping for the split. Sad, but unfortunately true. Davey is known for conceding games, and I think he is doing it against Harvey tonight. You would think they would have confidence enough to beat the Mets in Game 1 without Zimmermann and hope he outdoes Harvey in Game 2. Looks like a white flag to me.

  24. Kiterp - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Pwilly … because he will have the flu tonight

  25. alexva - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:13 PM

the Mets pitcher has only 24 innings under his belt this year, all in the minors. JZimm on the hill at home. someone tell me why I'm worried

  26. Kiterp - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Davey doesn’t want to use up his BP in the afternoon and instead save them for tonight when he may have to use them … he’s expecting 8 from JZ today

  27. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Anybody know if statistically Zimmerman is better during the day or at night? I know he got shelled Sunday afternoon, but maybe his track record is better?Maybe Ohlendorf's pitches are easier to pick up in daylight with that unique windup?

  28. alexva - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:20 PM

"Davey is known for conceding games"yeah like when he benched his starters against Randy Johnson in the playoffs. wait, they won that game, never mind

  29. Get Your Re(n)d On - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:24 PM

If Zimmermann doesn't plow right through this Mets lineup he should have his All Star designation revoked.

  30. baseballswami - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:24 PM

I think they probably have a stomach virus — people call it the flu all the time. The actual influenza has you down for a long time. Guessing they really do not want to describe their symptoms. Hand washing fellas!!!!

  31. Tcostant - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:24 PM

Most pitcher power pitch better at night, because it's a little harder to see. I remember Doc Gooden was a much better pitcher at night than the day when he was with the Mets.

  32. Just wonderin' - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Lots of speculation that it was Davey who decided to pitch JZimm first and Ohlendorf against Harvey, but does anyone actually know — as in factually — which team set their line-up first?

  33. hiramhover - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:31 PM

His career numbers (per baseball reference) are slightly better at night–3.29 vs 3.54 ERA, but the peripherals are all pretty close–for example, 7.3K/9 at night, 7.1K/9 during day. WHIP is a little higher because of more walks–1.25 WHIP daytime, 1.13 night-time.In other words, not exactly a night and day difference.

  34. Ghost Of Steve M. - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:38 PM

JayB, it's called the under performance flu.

  35. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:42 PM

Thanks HH. Ohlendorf doesn't have much of a track record there. I've been surprised by the velocity of his fastball. I was under the impression he was a Lannan type pitcher, but he throws signficantly harder (93-95) in games I've seen thus far unless I was looking at the gun times wrong.

  36. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:43 PM

Was it a bad pitch by JZimm? Not watching the game…

  37. baseballswami - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:46 PM

Pitchers who throw a lot of strikes can be vulnerable to those kinds of fastball ambushes. Hope that is it. We should be able to get to this pitcher!

  38. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:48 PM

Mrs B a slider that didnt slide just was tgere.

  39. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:49 PM

alexva said… "Davey is known for conceding games" yeah like when he benched his starters against Randy Johnson in the playoffs. wait, they won that game, never mindAnd then he let the Indians give the Oriole relievers all 4 losses with his brilliant management of the bullpen!!!

  41. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Accirding to FP, after secon at bat Schu corrected Harper's grip abd he went 3 for 4 after the fix.Now to get him to only swing at strikes for tge complete fix.

  42. Secret wasian man - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Wanted to get this in sooner. Yesterday was very exciting and much needed. But if you really think that will turn around the season your wrong. It's fun to hope. But this is a bad team and the record proves it. I will be shocked if they get 2 this weekend. But hey it's still fun and we can all dream.

  43. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:54 PM

    Thanks for the wet blanket.

  44. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:54 PM

ALR swings at 2 out of the zone and lets the one in the zone go.Same one harper k on no where near a strike.

  45. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Could we please talk about this game obly, nothing about any future activity, please. It would make it a lot more enjoyable for most.

  46. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Needed a sac fly or something from Adam… *Sigh*

  47. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:00 PM

But MNF, we only have 8 innings left in this game. Think of all the material with 3,480 innings left (not including extra)

  48. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:01 PM

    I forgot… I cant blink or I will miss Jordan Z… He works fast…

  49. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Plus, it's not a bad team. It's a mediocre team that is not playing to its ability. Stranger things have happened.

  50. hiramhover - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:10 PM

It would be nice to wear out Meija and deplete their BP before the night game, but kinda hard to do when he's throwing strikes and our bats aren't making contact. Too bad.Kurt did a nice job of fouling a couple off, at least.

  51. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:16 PM

If people want to be possitive fine, but we have negative Nelkies. We could lose every game all season , and I hate reading negative predictions.

  52. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:18 PM

It is good team not playing near irs abilities, but as I said lets talk about this gameIts a game tgread not a prediction tgread.

  53. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:20 PM

So Davey says Span's problem is he's letting the ball get too deep in the strike zone? Isn't that what FP calls "letting the ball travel"? Isn't hta a good thing? And can you let the ball travel too deep in the strike zone and pull the ball weakly to 1B or 2B?

  54. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:20 PM

We just need to wuit swinging at Meija's junk and swing at the fast ball. Mist his junk end up not in tge zone.

  55. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Wow… What the heck… Jordan threw 3 straight balls and then delivered a golfer???

  56. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Ny God what is zim up to? 0-2 count on Murphy then 3 balls no where near the pkate. Then the same slider he homered he last time he homered again.Note to Suzuki no sliders to Murphy.

  57. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:23 PM

Hitting him hard the last three starts.

  58. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:23 PM

Same craper sluder as first homer. A slider that slid nowhere.

  59. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:24 PM

Man, it's not hard seeing that Bryce is a catcher in his third year of learning how to play the outfield.

  60. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:24 PM

    Sure seems like it.

  61. Knoxville Nat - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:26 PM

Can JZimm just stop with the sliders to Murphy?

  62. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:26 PM

3 runs are a lot for this team to get back. I don't like for them to get behind early.

  63. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:26 PM

Jordan has both Lagares and Murphy at 0-2… Let them off the hook…

  64. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:26 PM

Man in scoring position again. As of now Mets 1-1 nats 0-2

  69. Alphabet Soup Erik - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:29 PM

3-run lead is pretty much insurmountable for the Nats, not to mention Zimmermann likely to give up about 7 runs.

  70. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:29 PM

AlLR 0 for 2 with RISP

  71. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:29 PM

Nats Guy – I actually want them to have batting practice right here… Keep the line moving.. Knock this guy around a little bit… Ya know, welcome him to the majors!

  72. sjm308 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:31 PM

I hardly ever read or post during games but what the heck.Hope this is just an anomaly with Jordan and he turns it around.I have a totally unrelated question. Yesterday Davey was ejected. We win the game. Does that win go on Davey's overall record for wins/losses? I am guessing it does but I just wondered.

  73. hiramhover - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:31 PM

MarkI second 222's "huh?" (if I may paraphrase) about the explanation of Span's problems in your 2:08 update. How is he late on the ball AND pulling it?

  74. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:32 PM

    I would guess yes

  75. ExposedinDC - Jul 26, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Man this team can't buy a hit with risp….really hard to be this bad…against a AA pitcher to boot

  76. Alphabet Soup Erik - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:33 PM

I think the odds of winning Keno are better than those of anybody on this team getting a hit with RISP. What a bunch of choke artists.

  77. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:33 PM

That last pitch (based on pitch track) to Jayson looked like it was in the dirt…

  78. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:34 PM

My goodness. Lay off this guys junk. It lands in dirt just about every time.Swing at the fast balls obly.Already 0-4 with RISP, and none of tge 4 at bats look like tge hitter had a clue how to identify a pitch.

  79. Alphabet Soup Erik - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:35 PM

On pace for no runs and 15 hits…well done guys.

  80. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:36 PM

3 of the K have been in the dirt. I made 2 comments, tge batters are swinging at off speed junk and letting the fst balls go

  81. Dave - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:37 PM

This is just laughable now. All I do is chuckle to myself and say "typical".

  82. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:37 PM

Never seen that most I have seen was 13 hit shutout ( or maybe it was 13 left on base)

  83. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:37 PM

sjm, I am pretty sure yes. Otherwise Billy Martin and Earl Weaver would have half as many wins as they are credited for. I think they even get credit when they are suspended.

  84. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Unh… I didnt even realize that the Mets still had Ike Davis… I thought they sent him down for a minute…

  85. pedrocerrano - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:38 PM

The problem is that this team breathes a sigh of relief every time they win a goddamn game….as if THIS is finally the game to turn it around. WEEEE SUUUUUCK

  86. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Why would you walk Ike Davis. He is a k waiting to happen

  87. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:40 PM

    Yes, Jordan… Just throw strikes!

  89. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:41 PM

Zim's fastball has looked fine. Quit pitching so many sliders. Just mix tgem in some.

  90. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:43 PM

Now swing at fastballs strikes, and not swing at the breaking balls going low.

  91. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:43 PM

  92. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:45 PM

Desi did it right 2 breaking balls low fast ball = single

  93. ExposedinDC - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Pitcher gives up a couple runs early….bats go silent in the middle innings…bullpen chokes away an insurance run or two…nats rally in the 8th or 9th falling just short…..change the script boys…this one sucks

  97. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:50 PM

Nats are a fastball hitting team… As long as Mejia continues to throw junk…. well, this is the result..

  98. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:51 PM

It was pulled because it was inside ball 4.

  100. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:53 PM

This is where a lack of coaching is evident. We swing at crap and tgere is no one kicking their ass saying what to do.They are making bad choices on their own, so they need a coach riding them.Worse offenders today Harper, ALR, Werth and span.

  101. PChuck - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:54 PM

    Span has got to go!

  102. pedrocerrano - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:55 PM

  104. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:55 PM

And that is why he is having trouble. I bet he didnt pull as much as a Twin.

  105. JD - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:56 PM

Mrs bHe isn't throwing junk.he is throwing mostly fastballs at 94. He is throwing off speed when he's ahead.

  106. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:56 PM

Good line.Schu needs to start riding him right now to hit to left or hit the pines. His choice.

  107. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 6:58 PM

More like he trying to get them to chaise.Tge two sliders to Murphy were awful, most the rest reasonable.

    Now squeezed

  109. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:01 PM

  112. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Harper a solid play. Now hitters lets get runs. Do not swing at off speed low stuff, hit the fast balls.

  115. Joe Seamhead - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:07 PM

ALR, Werth 0-4, 2Ks, RISP.Also, can you imagine the venom on here if it was Haren that gave up 2 HRs to Murphy? As to Span, I am with HH and 222 concerning Davey's statement that he's letting the ball go too deep in the strike zone. Huh? I personally see Denard hitting everything to the right side of 2nd base. That's not what he was doing in April and June.He should go up with a plan to hit to left field instead of listening to the he should pull crap.

  116. Knoxville Nat - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Zimm getting a high pitch count already just like Gio did yesterday. Doesn't bode well for the bullpen.

  117. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:08 PM

First time through line up 3 for 9, second time 3 for 9

  118. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:09 PM

He getsxahead then tries to get them to swing at a ball and tgey are not.

  119. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Can't spell Denard Span without "4-3"Well, sure you can. Just substitute "3U", or on a rare occasion "P7".

  120. Secret wasian man - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Guess one can't expect to score 2 games in a row. This team is pathetic. With Matt Harvey coming up. Oh boy.

  121. Secret wasian man - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:11 PM

Who's a bigger turd? Span or the guy who keeps playing Span? I'm done headed east. 4th place baby.

  122. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:11 PM

We won the Harvey game last time after all tgis whoa crap fron tge Negative Nellies

  123. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:13 PM

Interestingly enough, besides the 2 and 3 today, none of the rest of the line up is really doing anything…. Yet folks keep talking about Span…Adam and Jayson have left 4 in RISP themselves…Let's face it… The entire line up is out of sync…

  124. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:13 PM

Do you enjoy always being negative? I would hate beibg negatice all tge time.

  125. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:14 PM

Also, can you imagine the venom on here if it was Haren that gave up 2 HRs to Murphy?Yes. And your point is? When the team has lost the last 11 games you started, you don't get as much rope from the fans as the guy who is in the conversation for the Cy Young. I think that's perfectly reasonable.

  126. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:15 PM

Because they are not swinging at fastballs and are swinging at the breaking balls.

  127. pedrocerrano - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:17 PM

If you're not a negative nelly at this point, do you just not care? or are you going to be dumbfounded and depressed when we aren't able to make up 16 games on the braves over the month of september?

  128. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:18 PM

Also, can you imagine the venom on here if it was Haren that gave up 2 HRs to Murphy?====Actually, for me, this is a cause for concern.. Jordan's last 2/3 starts make me wonder if the neck injury is really bothering him more than he says… This isn't the Jordan we are used to seeing… I tried to chalk the last game up as a bad game (sorta like how SS had that game before the AS break where he was blown over) ….With Haren, I expect at least 3 HRs given up per game…

  129. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:18 PM

And I don't. I couldnt be happy if I thought negative that muxh.Even if isvhappening I refuse give in to tge negatice predictions.I would rather be wrong and positive, tgen rughtb being negative. It rubs me the wong way more than bad pkay does.

  130. Tcostant - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:18 PM

I remember going to a Mets – Cubs doubleheader as a kid on banner day. The Mets (then my team) score one run in both games.I never thought I's see something like that again, but the Nats could be heading there considering tonight's starter for the Mets. Hope I'm wrong!

  131. Secret wasian man - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:19 PM

Not depressed. Disgusted. It's minor league. Get tossed Davey. We need a win.

  132. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:20 PM

    Another stolen base… Ridiculous…

  133. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:20 PM

The play is negative, but you can still believe in positive ir predict negative.Actualky not hard at all.I asume we will the east until we cant.

  134. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:21 PM

It rubs me the wrong way more than bad play does.Luv ya MNF, but if that's really the case, you need to get your priorities straight.

  135. Secret wasian man - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:21 PM

I tell you what ticks me off and really makes me negative. A guy who misspells every 4 th word he types

  136. Knoxville Nat - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Secret wasian man said:"Who's a bigger turd? Span or the guy who keeps playing Span? I'm done headed east. 4th place baby."What a classy comment…..and I believe you have promised multiple times to be "done" or "headed out" or whatever. Why don't you do us a favor and follow through for once?

  137. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Rizzo does need to hire a coach to teach pitchers how to hold runners, we have had about a 10% throw out rate. Not sure what the league average is but i know it is a lot above 10%.

  138. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:24 PM

I see the same bad crap and hate it. I hate the negative nelly talk more.I didnt say i like tge bad play.

  139. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:25 PM

    I hate that too.I dont mispell i mis type.There is a differece.But I agree I hate that.

  140. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:26 PM

He told month ago he was gone and hasnt left yet.

  141. Sec. 1D 10T, My Sofa - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:28 PM

We were advised yesterday that spelling and grammar … sorry, "grammer" … ain't matter. But while I'm here: I said to get Bartolo Colon this spring. Espinosa-plus for one year of Cano would work, I said. I'm telling you now: Nate Schierholtz. That's all.

  142. Nats106 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Manassas Nats' Fan said… "I asume we will the east until we cant"And even then we didn't lose. We just ran out of season.I mean that in the most positive way-you have to think that way.

  143. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:29 PM

If Storen has the flu why is he tgere. Is ALR clueless this guy is tgrowing nothing but junk, and he swings at it.Werth gets a hit now that no one is on. How nice.

  144. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Again overmatched against a mediocre pitcher.

  145. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:30 PM

That was not positive or meant to be.

  146. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:30 PM

We are good enough just not playing like it

  147. pedrocerrano - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:32 PM

The 2013 nats; Boosting Cy Young credentials one flail at a time.

  148. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Yesterday was a mirage. Amazing not in a positve way.

  149. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Our hitters have no one to blame but themselves. These balls are all low that they striking out on eitger upper cut it to hit or don't swing. It not rocket science. It simply bad identification of pitches.

  150. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:34 PM

They need to stop using the unpires as excuses.

  151. Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Why are they swinging at pitches out of the zone? It seems all of the strikeouts are swinging out of the zone.I thought they are suppose to seek "fastballs".

  152. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:35 PM

    Its not positive.

  153. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Hitters arent doing what they are supposed to do…*sigh*Such a talented bunch that are vastly under-achieving…

  154. Secret wasian man - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:35 PM

NO NO NO MNF. Sorry buy NO!!! They are not good enough in fact the absolutely STINK TO HIGH hEAVEN

  155. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:37 PM

Desi is now 4 for his last 25 at bats…sorry dude you look like a child complaining to the umpire about the pitcher being set…complain before the at bat or have your manager…which one assumes is involved in the game talk to the umpire before the inning. this what players on losing teams do…whine and complainis it possible, with Harvey pitching that the Nats will go 18 scoreless innings?

  156. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:38 PM

If Nats drop both games, they are in 4th place

  157. NatsJack in Florida - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:39 PM

I don't what disgusts me more, ALR's inability to recognize a change up, Desmond's inability to recognize a slider off the plate or Secret wasian man.I'm pretty disgusted with all three.

  158. Alphabet Soup Erik - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Can't believe I'm saying this, but the Mets are just a better team. Lot of prospects on the way, also.

  159. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:40 PM

Occasionally umps are a problem, no excuse.

  160. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:41 PM

Why are they swinging at pitches out of the zone? I strongly suspect they don't actually know that the pitch is out of the zone when they commit to swinging at it.

  161. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:42 PM

They have swung at lots of low pitches. The strategy was terrible.Just swing at fastballs and forget anything else. But it must be as obvious to them as to us.

  162. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:43 PM

    We just dont agree then.

  163. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:43 PM

Pitch recognition is a major issue… Not sure how much a hitting coach will be able to correct that…

  164. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:44 PM

Why not use bull pen in 7th…JZim looked gassed in the 6th and once again Davey pushed the envelope and was wrong….again. the man has no feel for his team or his coaches input

  165. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Nats couldnt hold runners if their lives depended on it…McCatty has got to get them together…

  166. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Can they not hold any runners.

  167. David Proctor - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Would it be an understatement to say that the Nats are in a bad place right now?

  168. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Sigh – I hope I am wrong, but I feel this game is now over…And again, Abad comes in and goofs up…

  169. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Geez this is really bad baseball.

  170. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Theorhetically we needed Bob Davidson here as he would call a balk everytime on the same move.Another SB followed by a singleAs I said Rizzo needs to hire a holding on coach as obviously McCatty is not coaching it.

  171. Knoxville Nat - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Really? Another SB, this time with a lefty on the mound. Nats pitchers couldn't hold a turtle on base.

  172. ExposedinDC - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:46 PM

    Abad bucking for that demotion

  173. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:47 PM

That is correct. So dont lose both.

  174. David Proctor - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Abad isn't doing much to assure his spot on the roster after today.

  175. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Abad may be the odd man out… He started off the season well, but then all of a sudden – KABOOM, disaster struck…

  176. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:48 PM

I would assume that the third time around, players like ALR, Desi and Zim would have figured this guy out like Werth did. It is OK to go 0-2…but if you are a good player you can not lose every battle…that is the problem with this team…no consistency and sounding like a broken record…very over rated players our best players just are not very good. This is not Harvey pitching this is guy who just got back from the minorsIt does not matter now, because the score is out of reach, again….

  177. nats guy - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Is it mathematically possible for them to be passed by the Marlins. I sure hope not.

  178. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Daniel Murphy has driven in 4 runs this game, according to C&D…unh…

  179. pedrocerrano - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:49 PM

I'm going to wake up tomorrow, and the Nats are going to be tied with the New York Mets. In Late July. All the expletives in the english language couldn't do my frustration justice.

  180. David Proctor - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:49 PM

Zim went 2-2 in his first 2 ABs Mick.

  181. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:49 PM

After this weekend, Nats may be playing to stay out of last place…who would have ever imagined that in April?

  182. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:50 PM

So now, we have to hope Ross O is perfect tonight and our batters get to Harvey so we can get to their BP….Hopefully, the Nats can live up to the pressure…

  183. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:50 PM

David…your right… ALR and Desi did not… does not excuse Zim's at bat though

  184. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:52 PM

    Ditto

  185. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Would you trade all 25 for all 25?

  186. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:53 PM

so much for the hitting issues put to rest

  187. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:54 PM

nats guy said…Is it mathematically possible for them to be passed by the Marlins. I sure hope not.its possible they could be past by the Astros

  188. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:55 PM

They should the low ball starts low and gets lower it isnt starting high at all.

  189. karlkolchak - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:55 PM

I've been wondering for awhile now why teams don't just constantly run on the Nats given how pathetic they are at holding runners on base and catching basestealrs. As for Abad, he's just regressing to the norm of what he was with the Astros-a bad pitcher.

  190. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:56 PM

They need help how ever it happens

  191. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:56 PM

Abad came from a culture of losers and unfortunately he may be right at home

  192. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:57 PM

Davey has not done a good job understanding his pitching staff.

  193. David Proctor - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:57 PM

I don't think it'll happen, but knowing how weird the game of baseball is, it wouldn't be shocking if this Majia scrub shuts us down and we get to Harvey. It always seems to happen that way

  194. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:58 PM

if the Astros did pass Nats, the good news is they would get the first pick in the draft…maybe Bryce has a cousin, lol

  195. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:58 PM

I'm going to wake up tomorrow, and the Nats are going to be tied with the New York Mets. For all those who are absolutely certain that the Nats will lose both games, you do remember that the last time we faced Harvey we won, right? The Mets bullpen is pretty bad. There's hope.pedro, I really don't get why you feel you need to predict what will happen over the next 7 hours and get frustrated about it as if it's already happened. But I'll tell you what, if you are right and we lose both games of the DH, I won't criticize your incessantly negative and doom predicting posts again this season. But if we pull out this game, or win game 2, you'll stop making those kind of posts. For MNF's sake. Deal?

  196. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:58 PM

Karl – I remember DJ saying he didnt want to over-use Abad becuz he thought that may have led to him not being efficient in Houston…BP seemingly is still an issue… But our O is so screwed up, everyone has to be perfect…Too much pressure…

  197. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:59 PM

McCatty has not stressed it since he has been here. That is why I say they need a coach specifically for that.

  198. Manassas Nats' Fan - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:59 PM

    Maybe me.

  199. MrsB loves the Nats - Jul 26, 2013 at 7:59 PM

  200. mick - Jul 26, 2013 at 8:00 PM

only positive today is Lombo who should play full time period.JZim I thought did OK, I put it on Davey and Cat for allowing him to pitch the 7th…once again, the manager puts his team in position to lose rather than win…same old story
