Game 111: Nats at Brewers

Aug 4, 2013, 4:52 PM EDT

In a season where the Nats have hovered consistently around the .500 mark, there have been many ups and downs. But for some reason, lately it seems the peaks and valleys have been more extreme. They win three straight, then they lose two at Detroit and panic ensues. Now the Nats are back to winning with two consecutive victories out in Milwaukee and a chance for a sweep on Sunday.

Today the Nats will trot out RHP Taylor Jordan (1-3, 3.31 ERA) who is coming off his first major league win, a dominant start against the Mets in which he allowed just one run over six innings of work. Jordan is making just his seventh major league start, but his second against the Brewers. The rookie threw 5 2/3 innings with two runs allowed in a Nats' win on July 4.

Pitching for the Brew Crew is veteran right-hander Kyle Lohse. Signed late in the offseason as a free agent, Lohse has pulled together a pretty nice year for Milwaukee. Through 134 1/3 innings in 2013 he boasts a 3.22 ERA and a 7-7 record. In an overall struggling staff this year, Lohse has been Milwaukee's best starter. He pitched eight innings with just one earned run against the Nats on July 3.

Enjoy the game…

Jus' wonderin' in which of Davey's chapter in the book on sabermetrics does a struggling hitter like ALR continue to hit in the heart of the order?Seems like a Buffalo would feed better there!

  2. Depot Master - Aug 4, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Also wondering why Rendon is getting so much time off and low in the order. Has the league caught up with him?

  3. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 5:28 PM

Nats killer Rickie Weeks not in the line up.

  4. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 5:36 PM

Depot, Since July 1, Anthony has gone 19-99 for a .198 BA Whether it's a slump, bad luck, the league has adjusted, worn down from playing in so many games for the first time, or a combo of all 4, he hasn't produced as he did in June. I think he'll be fine, but a day off might do him good.

  5. Doc - Aug 4, 2013 at 5:40 PM

The league did adjust to ARen. But he's adjusted back, with a new batting stance that allows him to get at the inside pitches that opposing pitchers started throwing him.Davey said when ARen came back up, that because of his positon in the box, pitchers would start throwing him inside. He was hitting the inside pitches with more authority yesterday.Thinking that ARen's BA will start going back up now.GoooooooTony! GooooooooooooooooooNats!!!!

At least Rendon puts the ball in play and makes productive outs unlike our previous 2b, King Whifalot.

  8. sjm308 - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:04 PM

I have not read comments from the other posts today. It is telling to me that they did not bring Storen right back up with Ross O. going down. I actually like this in that the lefty can give the Braves some difficulty. I don't read alot into era for relievers but at AAA not many people were getting hits off him and his era was 1.8 or something. Will they skip Taylor after this start with the Thursday off date? I am thinking that is wise.Go Nats

  9. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Last night the idea of Span leading off was discussed again. I feel that with Rendon struggling, especially when he's batting second, Davey's going with Span at the top and moving Rendon down is justified. Though the results weren't good last night for Span, Rendon had one of his better games in the past few weeks hitting lower in the order. Span needs to do offensively what he was brought here to do, and that's to get on base by hook, or crook. It's interesting that Simmons, the Braves lead off hitter most of the year. has much worse stats than Span, but they have gotten much more timely hits than we have and have been able to overcome Simmons' poor stats.

  10. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Watching BAL vs SEA, how much catcher standing up right after catching a strike (to check a runner or throw someone out) affect whether umpire calls it a strike or not?

  11. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Been without internet (and on telephone) for hours… just catching up… Bad news about Ohlendorf. Not only did Storen not come up, but he didn't pitch yesterday in a 12-inning game for Syracuse (after a not-great appearance the day before–two singles and a fielding error). I think they are being very careful with him to straighten out whatever are his problems. I wouldn't be surprised if he has some minor injury also.

  12. sjm308 - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:19 PM

    Thanks NL

  13. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Understandably, Bryce is still very worried by the wall.

  14. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Bryce is definitely a catcher still learning how to play the outfield.

  15. Sec. 3, My Sofa - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Peter Capaldi is the next Doctor.

  16. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:27 PM

    OK, this is getting absurd.

  17. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:33 PM

    Great AB, Suzuki!

  18. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:34 PM

i was thinking Ramos hits a grand slammer on that fastball down the middle on 2-0 and in the 2 strike count a nice swing from Suzuki that I haven't seen since April. Nice job Curt.

  19. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:48 PM

OK, that play by Desmond was unbelievable.Weird play in the corner with Harper.

  20. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 6:54 PM

That Harper play should've been a ground rule double and if it were ruled that way, the run would not have scored.

  21. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:00 PM

OK, so a three-year deal for Lohse was the alternative to a one-year deal for Haren. (Or keeping E-Jax, or Rizzo being absolutely psychic on Liriano.)

  22. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:02 PM

    So—> not an infield fly?

  23. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:02 PM

When you're going well, those are the balls that drop…

  24. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:03 PM

Well, Lojse does have one more win than Haren, NatsLady.LOL!

  25. sjm308 - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:06 PM

    LaRoche not helping there.

  26. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:06 PM

An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule.

  27. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:06 PM

    Only one man on, NatsLady.

  28. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Desmond hits into more double plays than he should.

  29. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Desmond is making a habit of hitting in to tailor made double plays.

  30. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:13 PM

    Seamhead, I was joking…!

  31. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:16 PM

That was an exact replica of the play where Harper threw Betancourt out yesterday. Their LF can't do what Harper can do.

  32. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Span suddenly can't buy a hit anymore now that he's back in the leadoff spot.

  33. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:23 PM

    Suffering from leavemonitis again.

  34. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:24 PM

Nats blow opportunitys in 2 innings in a row.

  35. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:25 PM

David, Off the bat I thought that last one was going to be a hit.

  36. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:26 PM

I love when FP gets snarky.

  37. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:26 PM

Harper leading off and Span 7th seems the best results.

  38. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:26 PM

    Span in leadoff all messed up;

  39. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Just saw that Ryan Zimmerman commercial on not being a rah rah guy. Give me Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper every time.

  40. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Another inning ending DP! We're going to regret these.

  41. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:41 PM

Bob C just cursed this game.

  42. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:42 PM

Sometimes Bob and FP just don't know when to shut up.

  43. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:42 PM

Natsjack, Ryah leads by example and I hope that example isnt his fielding.

  44. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Need to win this game. Cincy losing big, Arizona losing 4-0. Hope it's okay with NatsJack I'm looking at the standings now that it's August. :)

  45. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Whats going on with Taylor Jordan today. 94 heater on his 70th pitch.

  46. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:50 PM

NL..I understand. I told Gator John that I'm going to wait till the Nats are 3 games over.500 before I assess the situation.

  47. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:51 PM

    LaRoche!

  48. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Whose bat did LaRoche use???? Werth's again?

  49. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:52 PM

I've been telling people about Taylor Jordan since Spring Training. I'm not surprised. But I am surprised by LaRoche!

  50. Steady Eddie - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:52 PM

    AdamPower is back!

  51. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:53 PM

    Werth's bat has magic powers.

  52. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Super balls, I tell you. It's stuffed with super balls!

  53. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Put the odds in my blog post. Still looks like it will need 89-90 wins to get a WC spot. You have to hope that STL and PIT take the Central and one WC, and then it's up to us. (I'm not giving up hope on the Division, but trying to be "realistically" hopeful.)

  54. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Jordan's slider has been pretty bad today. In the offseason, if he works on that, he's going to be a weapon next year. He's thrown really good ones before, like FP said, in his last start he had a great one. Just get more consistent with it.

  55. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:03 PM

    Uh oh

  56. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:04 PM

Taylor looks a little tired. Let's see if he can reach back.

  57. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:07 PM

Not good. Jordan is winded and tired. Davey, don't blow this!

  58. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:08 PM

    What is Davey waiting for?

  59. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:09 PM

    This is a great test.

  60. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:10 PM

OK. Now it's time to see if Abad can handle it.

  61. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:12 PM

I just hope that the GIDP's don't come back to bite us in the tookus.

  62. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Had Zim stayed back looked like a podsible GIDP

  63. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:16 PM

    Sh******!

  64. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:16 PM

    Abad is worthless today.

  65. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Davey waited until Hordan loaded the bases before he did anythibg, but Abad has been totalky not invokved as these guys are bouncibg balls just out of the fielder's reach.

  66. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:19 PM

    Wow

  67. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:19 PM

Why was infield in? In the 6th inning that is a terrible decision.

  68. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:19 PM

    the wheels have come off.

  69. SCNatsFan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:20 PM

Abad had his cup of coffee. Send him back. And why is Suzuki so far in front of home.

  70. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:20 PM

According to the beat reporters on twitter, the ball down the line that Davey argued about was foul. That's a big call for an umpire to blow

  71. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:20 PM

if we lose, I blame Carp for this game.

  72. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:21 PM

This inning has had a lot of bad decision on the fielders being in wrong spot, and the pitchers hitting the wrong spots.

  73. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:21 PM

Why was Suzuki 5 feet in front of the plate on the throw from Rendon?

  74. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:21 PM

Can't believe Suzuki couldn't get that out at home, but I'm no judge of the throw, didn't see a good angle of it.

  75. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:21 PM

SC, wondering the same thing with Suzuki. should have been out.

  76. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:22 PM

Yi have sound down with company here what Carp say.

  77. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:22 PM

nice catch Rendon, that is a tough play now come up and hit a HR.

  78. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:22 PM

All right, guys. Back to work. Let's show we got "heart" and get this one.

  79. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:24 PM

Suzuki could never get the out where he was standing. At least 4 plays tge fielders were in the wrong place.Zim ALR, then the whole infield, then Suzuki.

  80. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:24 PM

I don't blame Johnson for this mess. Abad is supposed to be able to get LH batters out.Great catch by Rendon! His throw home earlier in the inning was to far towards the first base side for Zook to have any chance to make the tag however.

  81. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:26 PM

    haha, he heard me!

  82. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Well, he just made up for the throw home! Way to go Rendon!

  83. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:26 PM

    Nice shot Rendon!

  84. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:27 PM

jeez, paul brandt, are you psychic?

  85. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:27 PM

    nice call Paul.

  86. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:27 PM

Seamhead, I agree, BUT, he could have (should have?) had Mattheus warming BEFORE it got to the lefty.

  87. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:28 PM

RISP Nats 2 for 10 Brewers 3 for 5.Nother we are losing.

  88. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:28 PM

Denard Span, I can only stick up for you for so long. LOL.

  89. SCNatsFan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:29 PM

God it seems Span looks at an awful lot of strikes

  90. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:29 PM

I thought Taylor was on fumes and needed to be pulled. Davey went to long and didnt read his pitcher.

  91. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Davey didn't have anybody up to start the inning because Jordan appeared to be cruising. He got a groundball just out of the reach of Desi. That wasn't an issue. It was only after that that Abad started warming. Davey had to let Abad actually warm up. He couldn't have predicted things would spiral out of control the way they did.

  92. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:33 PM

Joe. If you saw the side view of the throw, even though the throw may have been slightly towards first base, Suzuki was a good 4 or 5 feet in front of the plate before Rendon started his throw.

  93. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:34 PM

I have watched baseball 60 years or so and pulling the infield in lets a .200 become a .300 hitter, and a .300 a .450 hitters. It makes no sense doing it before the 8th inning.Cost us 2 runs as Rendon would have caught the ball easily had he been back.

  94. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Yep, Joe. I'm all for Span staying in the 7 hole till next season.

  95. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Our usual problem of not eough hits put together.

  96. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:35 PM

The last two games, Denard Span and Bryce Harper collectively?0-16 (with 9 LOB)

  97. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:43 PM

The booth is now saying the Brewer's big hit was a foul ball down the firstbase line.Jack, I don't think even if Suzuki had been back that he would have been able to turn to make the tag, but I think if the throw had been on the 3B side he would have at least made it close. Another stupid stolen base against us and then a WP.Come on,Craig.

  98. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:44 PM

128, I think so too. But in a previous game, I thought Jordan was on fumes and Davey left him in and he turned it around. Still, Davey seems to have a pattern of leaving starters in too long. That was okay last year, or okay in the spring when you are building arm strength, but it's August now, the bullpen is in good shape (except maybe Clip and Soriano). We need every win.

  99. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:44 PM

Last 2 games Span leads off Harper second.Go back to Harper leadoff and Span 7th

  100. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:46 PM

Wow, where has that Ryan Zimmerman been all year??? Coulda used him!

  101. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:46 PM

Zimmerman new you all were talking about the balls down the line. Wheres that been all year

  102. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Wild pitch by Stammen just cost us a run.

  103. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:47 PM

I owe you a drink Natslady

  104. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:47 PM

ALR just made a helluva pick on Desi's throw. Damn. It does appear that Lady Luck crossed over to the other side. Nice play by RZimm, but just too late.

  105. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:48 PM

I think tge placement of the fielders hurt as much. Zim almost on the grass, had he been normal depth easy double play. ALR let another by him down the line (foul but ump for some reson thought was fair,).Infield in, in a tied game in the 6th. Rendon woul have easily cught had it been back.

  106. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:50 PM

A bunch said Davey left Haren I too long last night, too.Put Jayson back to lead off. Jeesh.

  107. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Nats need some good magic here and now.

  108. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:52 PM

It would be a shame to lose this one. Thought we were cruising.

  109. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    K on ball four.

  110. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:53 PM

La Roche just not very good. That was never a strike.

  111. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:53 PM

That ball was never a strike. Why swing. We need the basr runners.

  112. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Oh my god Desi. I love you and all, but QUIT HITTING INTO DOUBLE PLAYS.

  113. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Wasn't that the same pitch LaRoche struck out on last time? (Before the HR, I mean). Annnnnnd, Desi another GIDP.

  114. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:54 PM

Third GIDP today is really bad.

  115. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:54 PM

That's the second time WERTh has got on followed by a ALR K and a Desi dbl play.

  116. NatsFam - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:54 PM

Anyone else notice that Desmond has 3 GIDPs today?Perhaps they should put him atop the order? Have him see a few more pitches and reduce the GIDP likelihood?

  117. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Then ian grounds a first pitch again.I dobt mind seing first pitches if they are drivable, but if you are going to beat it into the ground it was never drivable.Especially after a batter should have walked.

  118. Nats 128 - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:55 PM

    Doubleplays again

  119. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Oh, Desi. Not supposed to do that.

  120. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:56 PM

That's the first truly awful throw Desmond has made…maybe all year. He's had some errors on tough plays, but that was…wow.

  121. Greg Essner - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:56 PM

cant belive they extended Rizzo what a bum and fuc##### up

  122. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:57 PM

Desmond. Playing like every game is a playoff game. Those are his words.

  123. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:57 PM

Are you sure it is 3? I thought 2

  124. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Desi has hit into 3 double plays the last two games, and not even ALR could save him from himself on that throw.

  125. NatsJack in Florida - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:58 PM

    Ahh, a troll has arrived.

  126. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:58 PM

WERTh the only one with any consistency. Desi really hurting us right now. Bullpen blew this one though.

  127. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:59 PM

And the run from Desi's error scores. Yikes.

  128. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:59 PM

I love the suicide squeeze and we simply refuse to ever do it.With the correct batters it is great.

  129. NatsFam - Aug 4, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Ahh – the suicide squeeze. Nice to see a team trying to make things happen instead of waiting for them to happen.

  130. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:00 PM

    Werth hit into one earlier.

  131. Greg Essner - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Played 23 innings this weekend like the 2012 Nats. Unfortunately the 2013 showed up the last 3, Ughhhhh

  133. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:02 PM

I'm generally not a fan of the squeeze. I don't like giving up an out and bunting yourself out of a big inning. Having said that, there are times this year when all we've needed is 1 run and Davey has still refused to do it. In those circumstances, I don't understand it.

  134. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Hey Greg. Who are you? At least us LODers have been here a while. GeeeeZ

  142. SCNatsFan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:06 PM

I know it isn't my money but I'd release Tracy and call up Brown and see if Brown has anything. We aren't going to the playoffs – no, we aren't – so why waste any more time with Tracy.

  143. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Yeah, lets give the biggest Loser GM of 13 an extension and a raise!! hahaOh and while we're at it, lets give the gold glove to Zimmerman –!! lol

  144. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:06 PM

For one of few times the hitters played well enough to win and the pitchers were bad.

  150. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:08 PM

You just blew a 4 1 lead to a awful team. Even more awful than the nats.

  151. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Could you be anymore obnoxious and rude NFSS?

  152. NatsFam - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Kurt Suzuki had to swing – that would have been strike 3.Adam Laroche, last inning, didn't.

  153. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:10 PM

Bob C 1 – Nats 0I was so miffed when he said Brewers are getting swept.

  154. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:11 PM

This one hurts because the Reds and D'Backs both lost. Golden opportunity to gain ground. Sigh.

  155. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:11 PM

I'm not hating Greg. I'm with you. And fittingly RIZZOS big prize makes the Final out. Pathetic to lose this game.

  156. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:11 PM

Davey's mishandled pitchers all year — hasn't got a clue when a pitcher is gassed — This team doesn't even send a coach out to talk to anybody, no matter what is happeningSpan hits .400 batting 7th — so what does Davey do? bats him leadoff again and voila: Span goes back to hitting .100Good thinking Davey –but you're doing great for a very very tired and fading 70 year old

  157. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:11 PM

tough loss, a game we should have won.

  158. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:12 PM

Davey needs to quit putting Span first. Harper leads off Span to 7th gets both of them mote hits. Why is he so boneheaded he cant see that?

  159. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:12 PM

Every loss it's a different guilty party that's not performing.

  160. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:12 PM

Davey says he's looking for a lineup that scores runs — he lies When he does find that line up, he changes back up the very next day.Fire this old Man!!!

  161. SCNatsFan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:12 PM

I'm not down on Rizzo at all but Span was a mistake. His chance to correct he ship is get a new CF and push Span into Bernadina's role next year. The guy just can't swing the bat.

  162. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:12 PM

Davey and the pitchers gave it away.

  163. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:13 PM

yeah I think Span should go back to 7th. Today was a great day to gain a game on DBacks and Reds.

  164. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 5:14 PM

He can swing tge bat. His problem he pulls outside pitches for some stupid reason.

  165. Greg Essner - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:14 PM

good day all see ya at the park.it will get better keep the faith.get well soon steve

  166. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:14 PM

I don't understand how Davey supposedly gave this game away. Abad started warming after Jordan gave up the single (which was a good pitch and just bounced off Desi's glove). Abad has to actually GET WARM. Davey moved appropriately here. The problem is we have nobody who can go in and strand runners. Mattheus did that last year. Can he go back to that role? Abad sure as hell can't.

  167. NatsFanSinceStart - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Davey Proctor" "This one hurts; had a chance to gain ground."hahahahahahaAre you still thinking this team is playoff bound? Hey, I've got a perfectly good Bridge to sell, are you good for it?hahahaha this is so weirdly, and sadly funny

  168. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Davey is awful. No doubt. But the pen couldn't hold it or even keep it tied. With a young pitcher out there you have to cash in with RISP. Desi and ALR are rally killers.

  169. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:16 PM

  170. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Davey cant even bring himself to play Lombo every day — what a disservice to both Lombo and to the team — Lombo produces — only Lombo isn't Davey's guyWhat can you do when you're at the macabre mercy of a very bewildered very old 70 going on 85 year old man?Davey is doing wacky things. He brought in Storen with the flu. he brought in Ohlie too soon after a 115 pitch game (now he's gone) and today he brings in Abad NOT WARMED up.DAVEY MUST Go

  174. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:17 PM

pb–agreed. But however bad they are, the Brewers are still a ML team with 35,000 fans at their game. Can't take them for granted, can't take any team for granted. Now it's really time for Stras and Gio to step up. Period. Not because it's Atlanta, but because we need to WIN games. We are home for the next nine games, can't afford a homestand like the last one. Barves – take 2 of 3, maybe even 3 of 3 if JZ can throw a good game. Off Day – enjoy it, but not too much.Philly – 2 of 3, maybe even 3 of 3, they are in sad shape.Off-Day – enjoy it but not too muchmGiants – 2 of 3, maybe even 3 of 3, they are in sad shape.Come out of the homestand 6/9 or 7/9, maybe better.

  175. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:18 PM

What the hell? Abad was warmed up. Abad started warming after the single off Desi's glove. My point was that his "long leash" on Jordan was because it took Abad time to warm up. Stop making stuff up.

  176. Faraz Shaikh - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:18 PM

NatsFanSinceStart, if you don't believe this team has a chance, why do you come here to rain on our parade?

  177. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:18 PM

  181. jeeves - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:20 PM

For the first time in two years, I know that this team, this year, is going nowhere. The main reason, but by far, not the only reason, is Davey, and what natsfanfromthestart said.I love Harp, but it would be nice to back up his comments.

  187. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:23 PM

key play to me which still has me scratching my head was the bottom of the 6th, one out, Brewers had men on 2nd & 3rd and the IF was playing in with the game tied 4-4…guy hits a pop-up just behind 2nd base and scores 2…had IF been regular depth that is an out and then next guy pops up to Suzuki…don't get why you have the IF playing in given it was the 6th inning & a tie game.

  188. PChuck - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:24 PM

  192. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:28 PM

jeeves, I'm with you on Davey. There has also been a tremendous amount of bad luck/bad timing. Another factor, I strongly feel, is the boys were not mentally ready for the target on their backs. By that I mean every team (and every manager) playing its top top game against the Nats, for example, getting beat by Garcia who is DFA a couple weeks later. For example, the Dodgers series. They said in their ads they were ready, but they weren't. Last year, the Nats took the league by surprise–they were good before other teams knew they were good. This year even the lowliest team, even the rawest rookie said to himself, boy, if we can knock of the Nats, that's something. So that's the mental aspect. The injuries and underperformance, ESPECIALLY by the pitchers, is another factor. I know everyone likes to focus on the offense. But we needed big games and didn't get them from just about every pitcher on the staff. Our stoppers didn't stop. Our bullpen leaked. I think there were injuries hidden far too long (Detwiler).

  193. Secret wasian man - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:28 PM

NatsFanSinceStart? What position did you say that your son played on the MD Patriots? I knew all the dads on that team, and you said you were going to be sitting 4 rows behind the Pirate's dugout a couple of weeks ago. I looked and I sure didn't see anybody whose son played for the Patriots.

  203. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:34 PM

Some people feel since the team does some thing negative, they must be negative. Some people feel if the team plays negative that they need to insult people.Others belive like I that that as long as we are not mathmatically eliminated we can still make the playoffs. But I dont understand why those feel negative feel they need to say anything. If I was going to feel that way, I believer I wouldnt even bother to write anything.

Taylor Jordan = most awkward interview ever.

  210. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:39 PM

This is what Girardi said about Rodriguez playing for NY in Chicago tomorrow.”I think all of us are curious what’s going to happen, and is Alex going to be a player for us tomorrow, and what’s going to happen with the other guys that are involved in this. Because in my mind I have him penciled in here tomorrow. … I don’t suspect it’ll be awkward. Most of the guys know him as a teammate and have laughed a lot with Alex and been around Alex a lot. I think it’ll be business as usual.”Mr. Lerner, I don't care how much it costs, get that guy for our manager–assuming the Yanks don't lock him up for ten years!

  211. MrsB loves the Nats - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:39 PM

  212. MrsB loves the Nats - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:40 PM

NL – I've been wanting Girardi since last year….

  213. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:40 PM

Davey and Rizzo have been refusing to say how long Jordan has left and he just came out and said he has 4 more starts.

  214. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Meanwhile, Buck Showalter sounds just like Davey, tomorrow is another day."We were one swing and one run away from being in a different situation. They got some production out of the bottom of their order, and that hurts." [Showalter said.]The Orioles went 4-5 on the homestand."It's a turn the page," Showalter said. "It is what is. You try to learn from things, but if you dwell on it, there's another one around the corner. So, we don't sit there and lament what could have been. You have to focus on what has to be in the future."

  215. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:44 PM

David, Jordan did, or Davey did? Four more–seems like a lot. Wonder if that changed with Ohlendorf going down. Rizzo needs to be looking very carefully at the waiver wire–unless we go 3 of 9 on the homestand, then it probably doesn't matter.

  216. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:44 PM

I think that's every manager, NL. That's all you can do. You can't go back and change what happened, gotta move on to the next one.

  217. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:44 PM

NL at 531pm, nice job!re. the foul ball, I didn't see many replays and did not see ALR going nuts…would have thought he would have had the best view, not saying he would have changed the 1B umpire's mind but usually you see the fielder closest to the play putting up the biggest fuss…did anyone see whether it was the correct call? This is why I would give each manager 2 or 3 challenges per game but only fair/foul, safe/out calls not ball/strike calls, just seems like they should get those right and with the technology, they should, have an i-pad in the dug-out so they can review asap and not disappear for 3-5 minutes in the umpire room…just a thought.

  218. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:45 PM

DP, I know. Just don't always get the Showalter love, that's all.

  219. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Davey wouldn't say. Then a reporter asked Jordan and he said "I have about 4 more starts depending on the innings before they shut me down."

  220. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:48 PM

pb, FP said he looked at the replay several times and he thought it was inconclusive. He thought if there was MLB replay along the lines of NFL replay it would not have been overturned. Hard to say what the dugout/clubhouse saw, maybe there was a different angle. Just–why bother going out if you don't have a strong feeling about it?

  221. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Davey said in the postgame that wanted the umpire who made the call to ask for help. But he wouldn't ask for help. I don't understand why an umpire wouldn't at least ask and see if someone has a better view of it.

  222. paul brandt - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:51 PM

NL, thanks, good point maybe Randy told Davey if he didn't argue it, he would, haha.

  223. Joe Seamhead - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:52 PM

I thought the ball hit the bag, thus both making it fair, and making for a near impossible play for ALR. Bad break for us, lucky break for the Brewers. The 3 GIDP'S were the story of this game.

  227. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 9:58 PM

This game was filled with bad breaks. It's not like they hit the ball hard. You had the chopper over Zim's head, the looper that scored 2 runs because the infield was in, a sac fly, the double over the bag. Everything found holes.

  228. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Well, even if Jordan has 4 starts, does that carry us to September 1st? Maybe, with off-days and a couple of rainouts?

  229. David Proctor - Aug 4, 2013 at 10:03 PM

Although to the Brewers credit, they kept putting the ball in play. When you put the ball in play, things happen.

Adam Kilgore ‏@AdamKilgoreWP 2sJayson Werth had an x-ray on his right hand, which got hit by a Kyle Lohse fastball. It was negative, but there was a nasty bruise.Of course, the umpire said it didn't hit him.

  232. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 10:38 PM

DP, the Nats got some breaks, too. I seem to remember a few "strikes" that were pretty low, and a certain ball that the 2B or the RF should have caught.

If Jordan has 4 more starts then I don't think there is an urgency to replace Ross O. As much as I hope I think 3 weeks from now we will still hover near 500 and out of the playoffs- although I sincerely hope I am wrong. Once we are out no reason not to use guys like Maya or any of he AAA guys to get some experience.

And not just Segura.>>Andrew Gruman ‏@AndrewGruman 8m#Brewers reliever Brandon Kintzler has a 0.76 ERA in his last 18 outings. That doesn't change the fact that they are one of the worst, if not the worst teams in baseball. If you posit yourself as a playoff contender, at this time of the season, you can't lose to the Milwaukee Brewers

PChuck, with that I agree. Also think we should have gotten 1 of 2 from Detroit. And a lot of other things that should have happened, but didn't. I don't want to say I'm discouraged, but optimism is getting difficult to sustain.

So what does that say about the Orioles and their 11-0 blow out loss to the Astro's at home last Wednesday?

  239. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 11:09 PM

Venting is fine, but why followthat with a negative prediction. That is not being positive at all. Would never bother to watch if I thought they couldn't win.I start each game believing they will win one game.

  240. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 4, 2013 at 11:13 PM

Zim was 6 feet closer than normal and that was tge difference on that play.

  241. NatsLady - Aug 4, 2013 at 11:16 PM

MNF, didn't have a chance to congratulate you on the new son-in-law. (LOL). We have our best three lined up against the Barves. The weather prediction for tomorrow is EXCELLENT. Stras needs to pitch the no-hitter we've all been waiting for. Gio needs to completely forget his last outing. JZ needs to be solid. I feel bad for Jayson. He got plunked in the ribs, plunked in the hand and he's playing through groin pain and he's STILL HITTING. Help him out, guys. Help him out, this man wants to win.

  242. NatsFam - Aug 4, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Natslady – I was thinking Lilly too. If they can get him back into shape, perhaps we can go in to next year with him and Haren at 4 and 5. I'd be happy with that if we can get some consistency, and they may come cheap. Of course if Angelos lets go of the TV money we could get after some better players in general for bench and perhaps, as much as I like Denard Span, another strong option in OF. I'd rather have Span off the bench than Tracy.

Another, smashed by Juan Francisco down the first base line, appeared it might’ve gone foul. Adam LaRoche pleaded with first base umpire David Rackley that it did and felt that was confirmed on replay. Johnson, pleaded with home plate umpire Gary Darling to get help on the call. All of it was to no avail. The game was tied.Read more: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/aug/4/another-one-gets-away-nats-trip-ends-defeat-milwau/#ixzz2b2wsNJpB Follow us: @washtimes on Twitter

Just here to associate myself with the comments of my esteemed colleague NL at 5:31.

  245. SonnyG10 - Aug 5, 2013 at 1:29 AM

On the controversial foul ball, it looked to me like the ball hopped right over the corner of first base, so if I had to make the call looking at the replay, I would call it a fair ball. But the viewing angle of the camera might have been off, so who knows.

  246. peric - Aug 5, 2013 at 1:43 AM

Well I'm here to say what I said from the very beginning.Span was a very poor choice for lead-off and barely decent compared to Ankiel, Harper, and Corey Brown in CF. Prefer Brown because of the potential XBH/ISO in his bat. Span's OBP is nothing special. Now, Werth's? In the last 3 months of 2012 certainly WAS? He's not a consistent power/ run producing bat anymore. It starts there and cascades over the entire lineup leading to LaRoche over Morse. Espinosa's implosion had a greater effect than many here can comprehend. 37 doubles and 17 homers mostly form the #7 slot is nothing to sneeze at and looks better than what LaRoche will produce in 2013.BUt, of course this is Natsinsider. Everyone wants to here rosy, sunny, beautiful sunsets ne'er a rain cloud in sight posts and predictions … sigh …Well I predicted Ohlendorf would be a great deal more than anyone expected and so I will put myself again out on the limb.: If Haren can manage to even his W/L record to a .500 mark? Then the Nats make the playoffs. Can Haren accomplish this? Given his last three or so starts the answer looks like it is an affirmative. That coming from someone who stil thinks Rizzo would have better served the franchise by trading him to a team in desperate need willing to give up top prospects … but the deadline is now passed. The Nats were built to be world-series class in pitching (especially starting pitching) and stellar ultra range infield defense. The former is coming around. The latter with Zimmerman at third and Rendon at second is questionable but that defense may be enough to get a wild card entry. They can't rely on the sputtering offense. If its going to happen its going to have to be Tampa Bay Rays style with pitching and in the Nat's case top infield defense.

Sec 3 I hate when the blog attracts trolls and they say such stupid things. I respect anyone's opinion about players, management and chances to go to the playoffs as long as the opinion is expressed with a minimum of intelligence and doesn't feel the need to attack someone else to make the point. But this blog costs the same for the intelligent posts as the ignorant ones.

  248. SCNatsFan - Aug 5, 2013 at 1:56 AM

Peric to be fair you also said Rendon would never be at second base too.I see Werth as a leader of the team on the field, something ths team needs. Is he overpaid? You betcha. They need him n the lineup.

  249. Drew - Aug 5, 2013 at 3:48 AM

Jake Johansen gives up one earned over 5 and gets his first win at Auburn. He's got a 1.11 ERA and his control is improving. His walks per outing: 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1.
