Game 118: Giants at Nats

Aug 13, 2013, 7:44 PM EDT

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

As noted earlier today, Bryce Harper is really struggling to hit left-handers this season. Despite a .303 batting average and 1.008 OPS against righties, the Nationals' left fielder is hitting a paltry .172 with a .546 OPS against southpaws. Harper is also dealing with some flu-like symptoms, according to Davey Johnson, enough for the young outfielder to get a day off.

The Nationals' two other left-handed-hitting regulars — Denard Span and Adam LaRoche — also have struggled to hit lefties this season, but each will get a chance to start tonight. Not that Davey has many other options to replace those two, especially with Scott Hairston already starting in Harper's place in left field.

Gio Gonzalez gets the start for the Nationals, and it's only appropriate since today is National Left-Handers' Day. Sense a recurring theme here?

Updates to come, so please check back…

Alr you got to get the out at second.Arias up again.

  2. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:15 AM

I don't think they get 2 either way right there, but they keep the lead run off of second if LaRoche can get it out of his glove. And Clip gets out of it.Whew.

  3. Less Platu - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:15 AM

Good Job, Clip! You proved me wrong, boy — good for you!

I just pulled the maalox out and took a swig. That means I still see playoffs as a possibility. No chance no maalox needed.

  5. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:17 AM

Soriano blew a save against this team earlier in the year. I'd like another run please.

  6. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:17 AM

It was no a double play ball. Just need to keep lead run at first. No harm no foul.

  9. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:22 AM

Just put a ball into the outfield, Kurt.

  10. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:24 AM

I went back and cannot find any legion of doom talk for Werth. Most people have been really happy with, so I have no clue what you are refferring too.

Marte just made as bad a play non-chalanting a flyball in left to let St. Louis tie the game in the ninth against Pittsburgh. A one-handed catch that wasn't.

  15. Drew - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:28 AM

    Big run. Nice job, Zuk.

  16. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:28 AM

Walking Harper so much for him being in a slump. Giants dont belive it.Ok Span remember my coaching.

  17. Less Platu - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:29 AM

And Jayson Werth shuts the mouths of the Legion of Doomers led by Swami, Manassas and Procter.Simply our best player. Why you all still here?

  18. Joe Seamhead - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:29 AM

Spain's not up. Harper pinch hit for Hairston. Tracy is up.

  19. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:31 AM

Was just reading Mark's comnent Zim 15 double plays 7th in the league, just last week said he had 8 was not near the team lead. Confused.

  20. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:32 AM

    My mistake.

  21. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:33 AM

    Used to Suzuki batting 8th

  22. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:35 AM

Alright Soriano, let's make this easy.

  23. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:35 AM

One upgrade for next year needs to be the goon squad. Outside of Lombo they have been generally very poor.

  24. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:35 AM

Hairston is good if used against lefties. Lombo is useful. Get rid of Tracy and Bernadina.

  25. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:36 AM

    Lets hope.

  26. Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:39 AM

Totally agree, DP. There have GOT to be better lefty bats available off the bench. We've gotten precious little both Chad and Bernie.

  27. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:39 AM

HUGE out. Now Posey can't beat us.

  28. Manassas Nats' Fan - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:40 AM

I could live with Hairston against lefties.

  29. David Proctor - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:43 AM

    UNTUCK!

  30. Holden Baroque - Aug 14, 2013 at 3:44 AM

    Untucked in Phoenix tonight!
