Davey Johnson had to leave Friday night’s game in the fourth inning after feeling lightheaded following a bout of dehydration earlier in the day, but the Nationals manager insisted he’s fine.
“I’ll survive,” the 70-year-old skipper said as he departed the Nationals clubhouse only a few minutes after his team lost 3-2 to the Mets.
Johnson said he was doing his regular afternoon exercise regime around Nationals Park when he first began not to feel well. Doctors determined he was dehydrated and tried to give him two rounds of intravenous fluids but struggled to properly insert the needle.
“They blew up two veins trying to get fluids in me,” Johnson said. “I told them: ‘You only get two chances, guys.’ But I’m better now.”
Johnson was in the dugout for the start of the Nationals’ series opener against the Mets but progressively felt worse as the game proceeded. He left in the fourth inning feeling lightheaded and returned to his office, where he watched the remainder of the game.
The crowd of 35,008 might not have noticed Johnson’s absence at all until bench coach Randy Knorr emerged from the dugout in the top of the eighth inning to make a pitching change.
“I think he’s just coming down with something,” Knorr said of Johnson. “He got a little lightheaded, so he just went back upstairs. He’s fine, though. I think he might be catching a cold or something. …
“He was trying to work through it, but he was feeling, like I said, lightheaded. So he came upstairs and relaxed.”
Johnson, entering the final month of his managerial career, has dealt with a handful of minor physical ailments during his 2 1/2 seasons with the Nationals. He twice previously was unable to manage complete games due to back pain.
