Yesterday the Nationals introduced Matt Williams, the team’s new manager, at Nats Park by pulling out all the stops. They had the Lerner family and other members of the ownership group, dozens of team employees, and tons of media in attendance. Even Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond and Tanner Roark were there.

It was a very big day for the franchise, arguably the most important press conference they’ve held since moving to Washington, D.C. They believe they have their guy and the expectations for next season will once again be high.

CSN had a camera there for the question and answer session with Williams and general manager Mike Rizzo and I thought I would share the highlights. Here are some clips from the press conference:

Mike Rizzo makes a statement

Williams: ‘I bring passion to the game’

Williams: Nats are ‘on the brink of something special’

Also, please check out my story on Dan Haren and Chad Tracy entering free agency and the type of market they may encounter.

I’m really liking what I’ve heard from Matt Williams. I think he has a good chance to get us in the playoffs, baring injuries to our players.

Hardballs rating of Free Agents. 150 on the list and I dont see Chad Tracy. Surprize!

  3. David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 6:53 PM

If anyone is desperate for some baseball, the AFL All Star Game will be televised at 8pm tonight. Brian Goodwin is starting in CF

you can also watch on if you don’t have MLB network on cable.

      • David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:11 PM

And his first AB is a base hit…off Alex Meyer, at that.

  4. Ghost of Steve M. - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:17 PM

I like Goodwin’s more compact swing. He was swinging long for power last time I saw him. Unfortunately on his steal attempt he started his slide too soon and it slowed him down.

    • David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:24 PM

“Unfortunately on his steal attempt he started his slide too soon and it slowed him down.”

I’m glad you said that, I thought he started his slide too soon as well.

He will learn. The kid has tools. I like what I saw and even his 2nd at-bat he worked the count while striking out on a 3-2.

  5. NatsLady - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:28 PM

DeShields sure didn’t look good on that one.

    • David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:31 PM

I think I could’ve played that ball better. And I am not very athletic.

  6. NatsLady - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:41 PM

This is interesting. Nats payroll is already committed (estimated) at $117M.

    • David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:47 PM

That takes into account arbitration raises. They estimate what those will be. But yeah, we have a lot of money committed to next season, which is why I don’t see us making any big moves. I think our payroll ends up around $120M.

  7. David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:48 PM

I’d advise these guys to stop running on this catcher.

  8. NatsLady - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:56 PM

I dunno, good throw, seems like Russell a little slow getting to the base and tag.

    • NatsLady - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:57 PM

And then Russell makes a nice play to save a run. Go figure.

  9. David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:18 PM

    This pitcher is not good.

    • NatsLady - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:20 PM

No. East needs to rally, now!

      • David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:24 PM

Extra motivation since this pitcher for the West is a Phillies pitcher.

  10. David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Disappointing AB for Goodwin there. Had a 2-0 pitch and popped it up on the infield. Liked his first 2 ABs though.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:40 PM

You know how that works as soon as we compliment him.

  11. David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Nieto is in now at catcher. He must not have called the right pitch–home run for the West.

    • NatsLady - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:41 PM

And a couple more HRs for the West. Nieto still in there callin’ them (I guess…)

      • David Proctor - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:48 PM

I’m saying it tongue-in-cheek, but the Nationals have said that Nieto’s game-calling and defense needs work. Something to work on.
