The Nationals announced their 2014 spring training schedule on Wednesday, a 31-game exhibition slate that begins Feb. 28 against the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and concludes March 29 against the Tigers in Washington.

The Nationals haven’t announced reporting dates yet, but pitchers and catchers will arrive in Viera, Fla., in mid-February for what could be the club’s final camp at Space Coast Stadium. The franchise is looking to relocate its spring base, though to date efforts to get ballparks built or renovated in Fort Myers and Kissimmee have been shot down.

Ownership’s issue with the current set-up has nothing to do with Space Coast Stadium (which opened in 1992 and was renovated in 2007) or the surrounding area, but rather with Viera’s remote location within the Grapefruit League. The closest complex (the Astros’ facility in Kissimmee) is an hour away, and only three clubs (the Astros, Braves and Mets) train within 100 miles.

The just-released schedule underscores the issue: The Nationals will face the Mets, Astros and Braves five times apiece, the Marlins and Cardinals four times apiece.

As has become tradition, the spring schedule will conclude with an exhibition game at Nationals Park during the weekend prior to Opening Day. The Tigers, who played an interleague series in D.C., this season will serve as next year’s opponent, with the Nats making only a brief stop in town before heading to New York for their Opening Day matchup with the Mets on March 31.

Spring training season ticket plans go on sale Nov. 15. Single-game tickets go on sale Feb. 1.

Just got back from two weeks in Melbourne. The Nats have asked for extensive renovations to the facilities (leaky roof in the clubhouse, deteriorated seats for fans, among other things), and Brevard Co., which owns the park, is getting really fed up.

I asked several locals what they thought, and most of them said essentially the same thing: We would rather they stayed, but we’ve given them everything they asked for, and it’s never enough, it’s always something else, and it’s always on our dime. Don’t let the doorknob hit them.
