VIDEO: Doug Fister says Nationals have ‘huge upside’

Feb 18, 2014, 11:25 AM EST

Doug Fister sat down with Mark at Nationals spring training yesterday in Viera, Fla. to talk about his early impressions of the team. He’s been with the Nats just a few days, but is liking what he sees both from the players and manager Matt Williams.

Fister has played on some great teams in the past and sees a lot of potential in his new club. Being part of the pitching staff, in particular, he calls a “huge blessing.”

this is about pretty complete team right now. on paper, it has a good lead-off hitter, potential power middle of the order, solid tail end of lineup, one of the better rotations, solid backup C, decent enough bench, and nice bullpen. we have no reason/excuse to not do well.

I agree. I would be surprised if this team doesn’t make it to the postseason. Once there you never know what can happen but we should be higher then a 1 game play in.

Completely agree. Having said that, I hope everyone (national writers and all) skips us this time in predictions.

Anyone know any pet-friendly motels in/around Viera?

Not firsthand, but a little Googling and I found at least ten, anywhere from 2-15 miles from the stadium with prices from $54 – $139 a night.

Seeing the $54 a night makes me REALLY want to get down there

    Interesting tidbit from Boswell’s chat:

“The grapevine has it that Desmond has already turned down a contract extension from the Nats for more than Adam Jones deal in Baltimore ($85.5M/7 yrs) and may even have passed the $90-M level.”

    • Theophilus T.S. - Feb 18, 2014 at 4:13 PM

      Why should that surprise us?

      • David Proctor - Feb 18, 2014 at 4:20 PM

I don’t recall ever saying it should surprise anyone.
