Game 38: Nats at Diamondbacks

May 12, 2014, 5:55 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images USA Today Sports Images

After a brutal weekend in Oakland, the Nationals limp into Phoenix to face a Diamondbacks club that surprisingly has been among the majors’ worst so far this season (though Arizona has won seven of its last 10 to right the ship somewhat). Matt Williams, who played and coached for the D’backs and who lives in the area, returns home for the first time as a big-league manager, hoping to get his team back on track.

Jordan Zimmermann is on the mound for the Nationals, carrying a 10 1/3-inning scoreless streak with him into this start. He sports a 2.70 ERA in four career starts against the Diamondbacks, all four of them quality starts.

Right-hander Josh Collmenter gets the ball for Arizona, having given up nine runs (five earned) on 15 hits over his last 12 2/3 innings.

I’m not on this trip, but I’ll have an analysis piece in the morning. In the meantime, enjoy the game…

    Dag:

Source: #marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez undergoing MRI in Los angeles

    From Kilgore’s twitter feed…

    • Theophilus T.S. - May 12, 2014 at 6:27 PM

Unfortunate if it leads to what other MRIs have led to. Fernandez is one of the few Marlins players I like. Worth every bit of hype.

      • Joe Seamhead - May 12, 2014 at 6:29 PM

        Agreed, Theo.

    • Eric - May 12, 2014 at 8:16 PM

      Yeah a real bummer if it’s TJ…

  2. Joe Seamhead - May 12, 2014 at 6:29 PM

I think that this is the best lineup that Matt can throw out there tonight.

    • Theophilus T.S. - May 12, 2014 at 6:34 PM

Except for karma, it’s good enuf to win. With (bad) karma, no better than a toss-up. I’m getting tired of the “family feud, it’s all good” apologies. Bad karma.

  3. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 6:42 PM

It would be nice to see some runs tonight after 3 agonizing days of live baseball. That bum, McLouth needs to do something.

    • secretwasianman - May 12, 2014 at 7:43 PM

Don’t hold your breath on McCout. I miss the Shark

      • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:09 PM

You mean the guy who hit .178/.247/.270 in 85 games before the Nats dumped him last year? I realize doing better than McLouth is this year is a low bar, but surely you can think of someone better than that.

  4. philipd763 - May 12, 2014 at 6:50 PM

Desperately need some offense from the bottom 5 in the batting order.

  5. Joe Seamhead - May 12, 2014 at 7:23 PM

Ten days ago, or so, when the Nats came back against somebody or another this whole board was, “well they wouldn’t have done that last year” and now the past three days it’s been Rizzo sucks, Soriano stinks, Matt Williams is in over his head, Gio’s a bum, Stras is a headcase, Desi should be traded, injuries are no excuse, this team is average, at best etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum. Regardless of what they do tonight, next week, next month, etc, I will wear my Nats hat, cheer for them at the stadium, be thankful for what we have. And of course, second guess the manager because that’s my by-gawd-given American right!

    GYFNG!!!

    And God Bless America!!!

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 7:42 PM

I stayed off yesterday for the reason that the trolls had taken firm hold on the negativity. Some observations are correct in its current state but they play the games for a reason. I expect most of the Nats to get closer to historic numbers so let them play the games and debate it in another month.

      • secretwasianman - May 12, 2014 at 7:46 PM

And in a month you will still be saying its early. It’s over Ghost. Enjoy your summer. Play golf……

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 7:50 PM

I golfed today and I know the next 2 weeks will try our patience but I truly believe this is the best team Rizzo has assembled.

    • natsfan1a - May 12, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Yeah, that’s me standing over there, behind Joe.

      • Eric - May 12, 2014 at 8:17 PM

        +2

  6. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 7:37 PM

Jose Fernandez was worth going to see pitch. That would have been a high WAR guy and could cost the Marlins 5 or more wins if he needs TJ.

Talking about TJ, hows about Matt Wieters. Dr. Andrews I thought said he didn’t need TJ but I’m hearing they are doing TJ.

  7. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 7:37 PM

DeRosa: “Cling to the Nationals, they will be fine”. Thanks Mark DeRosa.

  8. secretwasianman - May 12, 2014 at 7:50 PM

I expect,to lose at least 2 in this series. If that makes me a bad fan then so be it. But the bottom line is , “You can’t polish a turd.” I will always luv the Nats and always root for them. But this season is gone.

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 8:06 PM

      Get a grip.

    • Hiram Hover - May 12, 2014 at 8:20 PM

Don’t worry, wasian. That’s not what makes you a bad fan.

  9. dcwx61 - May 12, 2014 at 7:51 PM

I believe this weekend was an anomoly and not indicative of Nats trends.
NL teams are severely handicapped esp when playing a strong AL team in an AL rules park.
We match up better when the pitcher hits.
I think interleague play should be minimized

    • Joe Seamhead - May 12, 2014 at 7:54 PM

      +1

    • Sonny G 10 - May 12, 2014 at 8:21 PM

      +2

    • knoxvillenat - May 12, 2014 at 8:54 PM

I’d prefer it go away completely, along with the DH.

    • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:12 PM

This is a very good point. NL rosters are not built for the DL. Still, we’re going to play a certain number of games in AL parks and have to figure out how to win some.

  10. dcwx61 - May 12, 2014 at 7:56 PM

But I got more to worry about with the West Antarctic ice sheet beginning to collapse decades ahead of predictions.
A 65 foot sea level rise when it completely melts.
This is something to the LOD to get serious about. Florida and many Gulf communities will be worthless.
    Better come back to Rockville

  11. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 7:58 PM

For all things worth… I’m glad that Jose F only has a mild elbow sprain… Glad it’s nothing worst.. Although I don’t wish injury on anyone…

So sorry to hear about that…

    • David Proctor - May 12, 2014 at 8:03 PM

An elbow sprain means there’s ligament damage. It is usually a precursor to TJ Surgery.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Learn something new every day… And just heard in MLB it’s much worst…

        Yikes… That’s awful…

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Dont think the MRI has been done yet.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 8:34 PM

Its not a good sign but elbow pain could be bone chips. It doesn’t have to be UCL.

  12. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 7:59 PM

Sincerely hope batters 5 thru 8 really have good games….

    Go Nats!!!

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 8:10 PM

      Better yet, batters 1-9.

  13. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 8:12 PM

ESPN was showing the matchup on TV today, and had Zimmermann spelled with 1 n. Good lord.

  14. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 8:16 PM

Braves is SF and we got the DBacks. No one will be crying in 3 days,

    • Eric - May 12, 2014 at 8:21 PM

That’s how it looks for the majority of remaining games in May… We have mostly .500 teams and below, Marlins and Braves have the opposite. Should hopefully enable us to keep pace until Zim and LaRoche return…

  15. Sonny G 10 - May 12, 2014 at 8:32 PM

I feel a comfortable win coming tonight. We’ll be firing on all cylinders.

  16. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 8:35 PM

These youngsters have a real opportunity to shine here. I hope TyMo and Walters step up!

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 8:46 PM

Just awful… I saw 1 report that said it wasn’t that serious… Then as soon as I hit the submit MLB came with, yeah it’s much worst…

      That’s just awful…..

    • Hiram Hover - May 12, 2014 at 8:50 PM

      Sorry to hear it.

  18. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 9:42 PM

    Span the man!

  19. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 9:44 PM

    …….and that’s how it’s done.

  20. adcwonk - May 12, 2014 at 9:48 PM

I’m too tired to check stats, but it sure seems like Rendon is very good at being able to make a productive out, more so than most on the Nats.

If I had bases loaded, I’d want Werth up. If I had man on third with one out, I think I’d want Rendon up.

  21. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Blue, where was that 1-2 pitch to Goldschmidt. Thought so.

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 9:55 PM

      Looked good to me, too.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 9:56 PM

Perfect pitchers pitch. Glad JZim didn’t lose it.

  22. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 9:55 PM

    K Goldie…No runs…..few pitches….good start

    A lead!

  23. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:00 PM

  25. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:05 PM

What a play by Desi. I thought that was a sure single by Montero.

    • nats128 - May 12, 2014 at 10:09 PM

Suprized only 1 positive comment on that fielding play. I guess its ok to bash a guy but shouldnt you give credit when you do something good.

      • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:11 PM

There’s only 3 of us here.

      • ArVAFan - May 12, 2014 at 10:15 PM

        Make that four.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:16 PM

Nope it’s 4… I was looking at paint colors as I’m about to change my room…

        Awesome, awesome play Desi….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:16 PM

The D&G are staying away with the Nats winning 2-0

  26. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:11 PM

Good to see Jayson got to that one. Earlier in the year he wasn’t making that play.

  27. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:16 PM

I placed ALR on my fantasy DL. activated Moore. Nice homer.

  28. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:17 PM

Ramos and JZim both robbed by D’Backs defense.

  29. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:20 PM

    Nice hit Rendon

  30. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:20 PM

    Nice hit Rendon

  31. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:21 PM

Good sign by that AB by Rendon.

  32. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:23 PM

That catch by the DBacks center against Ramos was just pretty…

    *rolls my eyes*

  33. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:24 PM

Collmenter is missing the target. Nats are just missing some of these because of the cut action. Werth killed that. Pollack is pretty good himself in CF.

  34. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:24 PM

We’re making solid contact. Only a matter of time before the flood gates open up.

  35. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

They are hitting… I expect those to start to drop by the 5th inning… :-)

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:26 PM

      We agree.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:32 PM

I hope so but I have seen this movie too often.

  36. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Argggg. Another double by opposing pitcher. I think we have given up more than we have hit yourself.

  37. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:31 PM

    One more out needed Zimm

  38. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:33 PM

Dang… Surprised Span didnt get to that….

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Me too. I thought that was going to be one Span tracked down like Pollack did against Ramos. That hurts.

  39. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:34 PM

Zimm what was that about. Fastball over the middle is what he wanted. Don’t oblige him.

  40. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Just right down the middle of the plate….

  41. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:35 PM

That slider, as FP would say, was a cement mixer.

  42. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:36 PM

These are some fat pitches the DBacks are hitting…. Come on Jordan… Pound the damn K Zone… It’s 2 outs…

  43. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:37 PM

    It’s like Jordan is lost….

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:39 PM

Ramos is calling pitches and Zimm doesn’t trust. That is almost always a bad thing with this kind of result.

  44. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:37 PM

The slider is dead. Quit throwing it.w

  45. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:37 PM

3 doubles this inning, what is this all about.

Pitcher had no huts all season.

Goldsmith 0 for the last 15.

Zimmermann is not trusting Ramos. Could be the problem.

Again our pitcher as soon as something goes wrong insist on throwing gas on the fire.

  46. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:38 PM

Sure, the pitcher gets a hit but the difference in the inning with 2 outs was not getting to that hit that Span couldn’t get.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:40 PM

Jordan has to let that go… He is missing his spots pretty badly… I mean it’s some fat pitches right down the middle of the plate…

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:43 PM

You just know he couldn’t. He saw Pollack run down Ramos smash and also Werth’s.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:44 PM

I bet ya Span is kicking himself and telling Jordan, my bad… But of course Jordan has to also respond…

Let’s just help the pitcher out and score some runs… Forget about the 3rd and get some runs…

  47. natsguy - May 12, 2014 at 10:40 PM

How many 3 run innings have they given up this year. It’s got to be some kind of record.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Way too many. Lose ficus once a man is on.

  48. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:40 PM

How disappointing that another starter can’t do the job.

We are suppose to have the best starters, but they simple don’t lock down once a man is on too often.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:46 PM

You are calling that in the 3rd inning?

  49. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:42 PM

Okay… So it’s time for Jordan to put the slider away for a bit.. Doesn’t quite have it….

And time to hit up Collmenter….

  50. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:45 PM

After 3 0 for 0 with sac fly for us. They are 3 for 5. Have we been 3 for 5 ate any time to begin a game?

  51. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:46 PM

Hello Ian Desmond, I see you.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:48 PM

Goodness… He (and you and I and the rest of the Nats fans) needed that… Hopefully this is the start of him getting hot…

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:49 PM

That last AB yesterday with that gift bloop hit and Charlie and Dave said that maybe that gift could get him started.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:52 PM

Ohhhhh I forgot about that little bloop… I’m hoping he gets his timing right… With all these injuries, we desperately need his bat….

Yesssssss… Way to go Desi… Thanks!!!!!

  53. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:47 PM

Desmond now time to keep it up.

Zim a second chance for you. Don’t screw it up again. Still 0 for 0

  54. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:47 PM

Dez needed that big time. So did the team. Nice!

  55. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:48 PM

Notice when he swung hard fouled. When he swung less hard homer. What is the lesson?

  56. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:51 PM

Can someone tell me McOut’s roll here. A few good plays in the outfield. And pathetic at bats.

  57. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:51 PM

Who cares about a bit of defensive downgrade by playing Walters? the upside in batting over McOut easily outweighs.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:53 PM

I think against a lefty you might see Walters start again.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:03 PM

        Start either way

  58. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 10:52 PM

Blink and a miss cameo from our 6-8.

  59. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Who ever is MASN’s person with the photos is a bum

  60. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Dammit, enough of the hanging sliders

  61. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Again…. Jordan… It’s time to retire the slider for a while… It’s not quiet working right now.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:54 PM

      Quite*

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Obviously no one cares that the slider isn’t working

  62. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:54 PM

I see he is still throwing sliders. Some one is paying no attention here.

  63. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 10:57 PM

So I’m beginning to think Rendon will be at 2nd next year… Zimm at 3rd and TyMo at 1st…

    If TyMo isn’t dealt….

  64. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:57 PM

Can’t say he cares he is pitching pathetically

  65. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:58 PM

Blow a fast ball by him

  66. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:58 PM

Can’t blow away a pitcher a big problem

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:00 PM

Can you find anything positive to say?

      • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:01 PM

        For real. It gets old.

  67. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 10:59 PM

Collmenter showed how you move the runer over.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:01 PM

Our guys have a problem with that.

  68. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 10:59 PM

Cole enter has stunk all year and Zim can’t pitch to him.

  69. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:00 PM

    Helluva snag, JZimm. Dangerous.

  70. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:00 PM

His defense is better than his pitching.

  71. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:01 PM

The former Wisconsin star wide-receiver took that pass! Who would think the Nats best defensive play would be by the pitcher.

  72. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:01 PM

Great at bat by the pitcher… Come on Jordan… It shouldn’t be this difficult…

Oh boy… What a play… I would have let that ball sail right on bye… Which is why I was never picked to play… Was scared of the ball…

  73. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:02 PM

We need a lot more runs as Nats aren’t stopping that.

  74. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:06 PM

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:12 PM

I turned away for a minute and the Cubs just scored 4 more in the 9th. 15 runs vs Cardinals.

        Uh, 16 runs

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:14 PM

        Good Lord Cubs…. Good Lord…

        They won’t score anymore runs for a while… :-)

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:15 PM

        17 runs

      • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:15 PM

        Why not against the Braves?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:17 PM

        DANIEL DESCALSO IN TO PITCH!

  76. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:08 PM

If the pitch in the middle drive through the middle. Don’t pull usually a ground out. Only pull inside.

When we hit toward center we hit no gaps. They hit to center they hit gaps twice for 2 RBIs

    • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:30 PM

Except for Span of course. So what is your diagnosis for how they hit gaps and we don’t? I’m dying to know what they can do. It must be easy from the way you go on and on about our shortcomings.

  77. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:12 PM

    Alright Mr Zimmermann…. Great inning…

  78. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:12 PM

Solid inning of work. Slider appears to be sliding again.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:15 PM

I saw only 1 not over used

  79. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:13 PM

No sliders that inning. Too bad they didn’t think that way in the third.

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:14 PM

He threw a few and they had movement.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:16 PM

        Not over used

  80. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:15 PM

I want more runs… LETS GO!

  81. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:16 PM

    Their bullpen is awful overall

  82. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:16 PM

    Wtf? LF Fail

    Thanks.

  84. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:17 PM

    Finally another RISP time

  85. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:18 PM

Here is Espi’s turn with RISP. Do it Danny. Nats need this.

  86. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:19 PM

I guess Desmond isn’t ready for consecutive hits yet.

  87. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:19 PM

Come on Espi…. Base hit…. Right over the 3rd baseman…

  88. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:21 PM

    0 for 2 RISP now

  89. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:21 PM

    2 strikes make it three!

  90. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:24 PM

Just not a proficient night for Jordan….

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:26 PM

Team scored enough tonight to win most games so it is on him tonight to lock it up which he obviously can’t do tonight.

  91. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:25 PM

    Big K

  92. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:27 PM

    Terrible, terrible pitch…

  93. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:27 PM

Just not a good night from Zimmermann

  94. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:27 PM

With Inciarte and the #9 hitter in the hole, probably smarter to nibble on Pollack with 1st base open.

  95. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:28 PM

5 extra base hits now. What is the deal tonight. Do your damn job.

  96. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:28 PM

Just an uneasy feeling over the entirety of this game.

  97. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:29 PM

    DBacks are swinging away

  98. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:30 PM

RISP US 0 for 2 . Them 4 for 9. Our hitters just seem to have problems.

FP drinking again. Colementer pitch only 5 not 6

    • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:32 PM

Give it a rest MNF. Our problem tonight is not hitting with RISP. It’s JZnn’s inability to hold the leads he’s been given.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:36 PM

I agree that is the biggest problem. But they 4 hits in RISP and we have 0. Their pitchers haven’t been so good we can’t get some.

      • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:41 PM

We’ve had only two chances. And we’ve hit 2 homers. You’re getting boring harping on RISP even when it’s not really an issue.

  99. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:31 PM

Just not a good night for Jordan… Come on BP, hold them…. And get to work Nats bats!!

  100. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:32 PM

Only starter who has played stopper was Roark, unfortunately Soriano blew that one.

  101. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:33 PM

MW one inning late again. Zim could have left after 5 with a lead. But in no can’t do that. Pitching like crap and you keep him in. I am getting less impressed with MW as the season goes.

Our hitters are the one’s injured, yet our pitcher have terrible as group out west except Roark and Clippard

    • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:35 PM

He was great in the 5th.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:38 PM

Then reverted again in the 6th. The 5th was the odd inning not the 6th

  102. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:35 PM

Right now it’s hard to keep he line moving when you’re relying on Espy who can’t extend an at bat to save his life and Ks literally every time he gets a 2 strike count and McClouth who I had and still do have hope for as regulars. Don’t know what’s wrong with him atm.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:39 PM

Indeed until on the bench and playing sparingly, this is true.

  103. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:38 PM

    There goes a unicorn!

  104. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:39 PM

Hopefully that’s the start of something big for Mr McLouth…. Come on Walters… Get us the lead.. :-)

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Every time he gets a hit I think that.

    • Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:41 PM

He looked shocked to be on base ha.

      • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:42 PM

He kinda has a lost look all the time.

  105. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:42 PM

Come hit the ball with men on.

  106. npb99 - May 12, 2014 at 11:43 PM

JZim exits the game with a 3.59 ERA, Stras is currently at 3.42, and Gio at 3.97. That sort of seems like an average core of starters. I’m trying really hard not to be negative, but gosh, I thought we had an elite group….
And, hey, don’t bash me – I’m still rooting all-out for this team.

    • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:48 PM

No bashing deserved. It’s a fair point. Our pitchers have to step up to help the injury decimated lineup. Right now, they’re not doing it.

  107. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:44 PM

    My goodness what bad luck.

  108. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:44 PM

Rendon has the biggest AB of the game here.

  109. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:44 PM

    Dammit….ground rule double.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:46 PM

  112. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:45 PM

    Out….ahhhhhhhhhh

  116. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:48 PM

When the decided to change transfer rule I didn’t like it.

On a ball that bounces over the fence with a 2 out situation the umps should be allowed to place the runner where they want.

    • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:50 PM

What? Ground rule doubles have been ground rule doubles forever. What does that have to do with the transfer rule?

  117. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:48 PM

NO luck. This stinks. Rendon plugs the 5.5 hole and their shortstop gets it.

  118. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:48 PM

    Ouch.

  119. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 12, 2014 at 11:48 PM

Good play by their SS… Dammit… I wish Z Walters would have moved McLouth over.. Unh

  120. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Had McLouth had the chance to steal, this could be a tie game.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:51 PM

He had the chance the whole Walters at bat

      • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:51 PM

The pitcher did a good job holding him.

  121. manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:50 PM

It sure seems like the other team out fields almost every game. I don’t think Desmond makes that play. Our opponents do it way way too often.

  122. David Proctor - May 12, 2014 at 11:50 PM

What luck. Span’s hit should have tied the game and then Rendon gets robbed. When it’s going bad, it’s going bad.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:53 PM

2 innings for the Nats luck to change.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:53 PM

Indeed again a part of it we cause. McOut had he stolen during the Walters at would score.

Stole plenty with O’s not doing any of that here.

      • veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:55 PM

That’s because he’s never on base.

      • Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:56 PM

Hasn’t been on base enough to steal. :) If he got caught because the pitcher is very quick to the plate, you’d be complaining about that too. This inning was bad luck. Or do you think Span should have hit that ball differently so it didn’t jump over the fence?

      • David Proctor - May 12, 2014 at 11:56 PM

There was a guy with 2 big league innings prior to today pitching. There’s no tape on him to get a good jump. He thought he had him timed once and almost went but the pitcher stepped off.

  123. Section 222 - May 12, 2014 at 11:51 PM

Did Rendon lose a millisecond by calling himself safe on that play?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:52 PM

      Sure did.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:55 PM

He might have but he needed to get there.

  124. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:52 PM

Arizona’s defense has been the difference in this game and some lucky bounces.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:55 PM

      Or unlucky

  125. David Proctor - May 12, 2014 at 11:52 PM

And then a little bloop by Prado. Unreal.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:57 PM

Wee Willy Keeler said this 100 years ago. Hit it where they ain’t. That works much better than hitting where they can get to it.

  126. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:53 PM

We’re the comeback kids. No need to stress.

  127. Ghost of Steve M. - May 12, 2014 at 11:56 PM

Haren has given up 3 earned over 5 so far against the Fish.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 12, 2014 at 11:58 PM

But Puig huts a 3 run homer to take the lead. We missed that chance

  128. Danny - May 12, 2014 at 11:57 PM

Lot of poor OBPs in this lineup tonight I’ve noticed. Needs to be improved upon.

  129. veejh - May 12, 2014 at 11:58 PM

Just what we need, Barrett to the DL.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:01 AM

Come on Nats bats… Lets do this!

    • manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:05 AM

Hit in the gaps they have.

What on earth are we swinging at one at least a foot outside.

      • Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:09 AM

You don’t seem to understand. Ziegler is a very good pitcher. Did you hear what FP said? Longest active scoreless inning streak. It is not a sign of incompetence or moral weakness to swing and miss at one of his sidearm sidewinders. It just isn’t.

  141. manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:03 AM

If we could field like them we would have at least 2 or 3 more wins.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:06 AM

They haven’t been all that great this year. They are just turning multiple Web Gems.

  143. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:06 AM

  144. Danny - May 13, 2014 at 12:07 AM

That was embarrassing for our 4-5.

  145. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:08 AM

Jorda and the rest of our pitchers just have to do a better job… Jordan was just inefficient tonight…. Was handed the lead a couple of times and squandered it away…

    • manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:12 AM

Does he get credited for a blown save in the 6th. Of course nit, but that is when he cost us the game if we don’t win.

  146. Danny - May 13, 2014 at 12:08 AM

Unfortunately with all of the lineup fill ins we need our SP to carry us currently and it is just not happening atm.

  147. manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:09 AM

They field great, and our last 2 swung balls a foot outside. Ziegler has pitch that way all tear. He depend on to swing at the outside.

Been a nice addition to my fantasy team. He only runs into trouble when people walk on his bad pitches.

Our advance scouts didn’t report apparently.

    • Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:10 AM

Yeah, that must be it. Bad advance scouting. Otherwise our hitters would know not to swing at pitches that are outside, right?

      • manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:15 AM

No don’t swing in the middle of the plate with him. It never ends there. I have seen him pitch plenty this year. He is only effect people swing at balls in the middle to start with.

Obviously you don’t swing if outside all the way, you don’t swing at any of his middle pitch. That is advance scout should report.

      • Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:19 AM

  172. Danny - May 13, 2014 at 12:21 AM

Lol no way, how do you think the DBacks think of their new closer..

  173. Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:21 AM

    Frandsen! I see you!!!!

  174. Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:22 AM

Anyone who predicted that TyMo, Desi, Espi, and Frandsen would homer tonight should start playing the stock market.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:23 AM

I had 5 homers had Span in addition.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:25 AM

222, I had 2 of them called in TyMo and Espi but I also thought Rendon was going to homer in at-bat #2. I said to my friend that Espi 2 years ago homered off of Kimbrel to tie a game in a similar situation.

  175. manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:22 AM

Can we hold a lead a third time?

    • veejh - May 13, 2014 at 12:23 AM

Way to throw in a pessimistic comment right after 2 HRs to take the lead. Good job.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:24 AM

Question not comment. I think we can.

      • Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:25 AM

        He apparently can’t help himself.

  176. Danny - May 13, 2014 at 12:22 AM

2 bombs from the opening day bench crew.

  177. Drew - May 13, 2014 at 12:22 AM

    Frandtastick.

  178. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:22 AM

I thought Frandsen had gotten under that one… Didnt think it would be a hr…. Whoop, whoop…

  179. David Proctor - May 13, 2014 at 12:23 AM

Oh my. FP saying Frandsen is the MVP of the club so far this year. I get they’re buddies, but the over-the-top homerism is sickening sometimes. At least pretend to be impartial.

    • Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:24 AM

That’s not even homerism. It’s idiocy.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:26 AM

Lol.. Sometimes we gotta excuse FP… Think he just gets caught up in the hype…

No doubt Frandsen has been clutch… But we all know not MVP worthy…

Although that behind the back catch was sick….

  180. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:24 AM

    Keep hitting it baby!!!!!!

  181. Danny - May 13, 2014 at 12:25 AM

    Hopefully this game kickstarts Span.

  182. manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:25 AM

    Rendon pile on.

  183. manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:26 AM

    Straight up instead.

  184. Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:27 AM

Biggest PH of the season there by Frandsen.

  185. Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:27 AM

Time for Sori to atone for the other night. Gave away a game we should have won. Now time to save a game we were surely going to lose.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:28 AM

      Reversal of fortune.

  186. Danny - May 13, 2014 at 12:27 AM

I know Sorianos been solid As game blip aside, but I want to see Storen.

  187. manassasnatsfan - May 13, 2014 at 12:27 AM

OK Soriano let’s start another 25 game streak.

  188. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:28 AM

Aight Sori… Time to start another streak… Man 530 is gonna be here before I know it… So make quick work of it…

    • Section 222 - May 13, 2014 at 12:30 AM

Me too. Welcome to the anti-Cult of the Closer Ghost!

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:31 AM

I just think closer by committee keeps me from Maalox and Bourbon.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 13, 2014 at 12:31 AM

    Sigh….. Come on Sori… Stop nibbling….

  200. Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:32 AM

Why aren’t you at NO DOUBLES there.

    • coop202 - May 13, 2014 at 12:33 AM

I still fear prado… So many bad memories

    • Sec 3 My Sofa - May 13, 2014 at 12:34 AM

      B/c there’s 2 outs and nobody on.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 13, 2014 at 12:35 AM

I know, you give up the single as that runner doesn’t get into scoring position. McLouth catches that just like Span in the 9th on Saturday night.

I know, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

      • Sec 3 My Sofa - May 13, 2014 at 12:45 AM

With anybody on, or <2 outs, yes. But a double doesn't beat you there. Triple doesn't, even. Any out wins the game. Play for a win on the road.
