Game postponed, no makeup this week

A major thunderstorm that swept through the Washington area forced the postponement of Tuesday night’s game between the Nationals and Marlins, which will not be made up for some time, perhaps not until the final weekend of the season.

Rain began falling at Nationals Park shortly after 6 p.m. and became intense just before the scheduled 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The game was called off a few minutes later.

Rookie Blake Treinen was due to make his third career start, facing the Marlins’ Henderson Alvarez. Nationals manager Matt Williams, though, said Jordan Zimmermann will start Wednesday as originally scheduled, with Treinen moving to the bullpen for a couple of days before re-assuming his place in the rotation next week after everyone else pitches on turn.

“Jordan is on normal rest,” Williams said. “And to push everybody back … we had to do that with some off-days earlier in the month, but we’d like to keep them on normal rest. And Blake, getting his feet wet here, he’s got experience in the bullpen, so we can do that for the next couple of days until his turn comes up again.”

The Marlins, on the other hand, will push all of their starters back, with Alvarez now starting Wednesday against the Nationals and Tom Koehler bumped to Friday against the Braves.

Presented with the option of a doubleheader Wednesday or a game Thursday — both teams are scheduled to be off — the clubs have decided to wait until later this season to make this one up.

“We’re looking at dates now, but it’s not going to happen in this series,” Williams said. “They come in again later in the year, so it’s not going to happen either tomorrow, (with a) doubleheader, or Thursday, the off-day. We’ll look to push that.”

Miami manager Mike Redmond told reporters he expects to play a doubleheader on Friday, Sept. 26. That would fall during the Marlins’ only remaining scheduled trip to D.C. for the final series of the regular season, creating a potentially huge four-games-in-three-days stretch if either team remains in the pennant race.

Given their current injury woes — Ryan Zimmerman, Bryce Harper and Gio Gonzalez all are on the disabled list — the Nationals understandably would want to hold off on a makeup game until their star players are healthy.

I guess divisional foes get axed quick, Dodgers waited all night.

    Sonny here in Ma’nassas

Well, the Marlins play in the same time zone (making scheduling on a mutual off day easier) and also have another trip to DC on the schedule. Neither of those are true for the Dodgers. It’s small wonder they waited so long to try to get that game in.

Hope reporters get pitching assignment for tomorrow quickly

  3. 3on2out - May 27, 2014 at 7:36 PM

Blake will miss his start I assume?

    • manassasnatsfan - May 27, 2014 at 7:41 PM

Me too, if so I want to drop him and pick someone else. I know selfish reason for wanting to know.

  4. NatsLady - May 27, 2014 at 7:47 PM

Dark as night in Burke and I am getting a great car wash. Really coming down.

  5. micksback1 - May 27, 2014 at 8:02 PM

I hope the game will mean something if/when it is rescheduled , assume later this season. I was at the game Sunday, had a great time, ended up drinking some serious brews, because the nats sorry offensive was killing me.

this under 500 is crap and is unacceptable

  6. veejh - May 27, 2014 at 8:04 PM

JZimmpitches tomorrow. Treinen to the pen for a few.

  7. micksback1 - May 27, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Espi’s at bats were terrible, I think this kid has topped out, its to bad, he has such a great glove.

  8. dcwx61 - May 27, 2014 at 8:07 PM

    poor call…could be worse tomorrow.
looks like a break from 8 pm on

  9. Eugene in Oregon - May 27, 2014 at 8:26 PM

Recommendation: Wait to reschedule until (a) Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman are off the DL; (b) Giancarlo Stanton is on the DL, or (c) both of the above.

    • Hiram Hover - May 27, 2014 at 8:54 PM

      I like your thinking!

Would only add on b) Stanton goes on the DL or gets traded to Boston

      • Eugene in Oregon - May 27, 2014 at 8:58 PM

I’d actually rather see him go to the Hiroshima Carp, but I’m guessing that’s not a realistic option.

      • Sec 3 My Sofa - May 27, 2014 at 9:06 PM

I’d be ok with the A’s; we don’t see them again until 2017.

    • Candide - May 27, 2014 at 9:15 PM

… or (d) the second Tuesday next week. Whichever comes first.

  10. peewilly - May 27, 2014 at 8:39 PM

Kind of strange to call this so early. As dcwx noted they may be in the same boat tomorrow. I’m going tomorrow, could be a very long night.

    • ArVAFan - May 27, 2014 at 9:08 PM

Looking at the radar, there wasn’t a break in the storm clouds headed in the direction of the ballpark. There was lightning flashing all around. I suspect they have better radar than our cell phones, and once it was clear that the southernmost cell of the storm was not going to pass north of the park, I understand why they called it.

Given the forecast for tomorrow, it will be interesting to see if they try to get it in, even if very late, rather than have two games delayed to the end of the season.

      • dcwx61 - May 27, 2014 at 9:29 PM

they really don’t have anything better than you all can get on the nws web site they needed to skip treinan i see no weather reason to have called the game….baseball related yes (i do weather for a living)

  11. Danny - May 27, 2014 at 9:45 PM

Hey Braves down 6-3. Gotta cherish the little things in times like these.

  12. Eric - May 27, 2014 at 10:43 PM

    Braves lose!

  13. NatsLady - May 27, 2014 at 10:52 PM

    Well, Mejia just walked McCutchen with two out in the 9th up 4-2. Definite pitch around. We’ll see how this works. There was a runner on 1st).;

  14. veejh - May 27, 2014 at 11:20 PM

Anyone see 50 Cent throw the first pitch of the Pirates Mets game? LMAO. He throws like a girl!!!

  15. sjm308 - May 27, 2014 at 11:31 PM

Just read a little about the Braves game. Gattis on the bench with his wrist in a brace, Simmons out in the 8th with a bad ankle. We are not the only team with injuries but until we catch these guys I am not going to feel sorry for anyone else.

    Go Nats!

    • Eric - May 28, 2014 at 12:11 AM

Man…if the Braves’ position players start going on the DL, there’s no telling where things might be in a month…

      • Eugene in Oregon - May 28, 2014 at 12:14 AM

It’s a cliche, but there’s still a lot of baseball to be played.

  16. David Proctor - May 28, 2014 at 12:14 AM

So…the Orioles just intentionally walked Mark Reynolds in the 10th inning with 2 out and nobody on to get to the pitcher Gallardo who was pinch hitting because the Brewers were out of position players. Gallardo proceeded to double, Reynolds scored from first and the Brewers walked the Orioles off.

    That has to hurt.

    • Eugene in Oregon - May 28, 2014 at 12:16 AM

And earlier the Rangers gift-wrapped a game and gave it to the Twins.
