‘Baseball in the District’ –’s Jim Callis talks deadline

Aug 2, 2014, 10:00 AM EST

With the 2014 non-waiver trade deadline passing on Thursday, much of the talk on this week’s episode of ‘Baseball in the District’ centered on the Nationals’ deal to acquire Asdrubal Cabrera, as well as other moves made around the league.

Tim Murray of ESPN 980 and I welcomed in two guests to talk about the deadline. The first was Jim Callis of, an expert on prospects and all things Major League Baseball. Our second guest was Jordan Bastian, Cleveland Indians beat writer for Bastian had the Cabrera story first on Thursday and had great insight on what type of player the Nats just brought in.

Before talking to our guests, Tim and I talked about Cabrera’s potential impact and discussed the recent struggles of the Nationals’ bullpen.

Check it out here:

Why does Tim Murray or anyone else who has followed this team think Walters/Espi were going to be a platoon?

Whatever you think Walters did as a lefty in the Minors those stats don’t always translate, in 30 ABs (small sample size) for the Nats, Walters slashed .133/.235/.167/.402 batting lefty. That isn’t a platoon guy. Asdrubal on the other hand hits RHPs much better than Espi and Espi hits LHPs better than Asdrubal.

Chase summed it up well, Walters was expendable.

Callis: “Nick Franklin probably needs to give up switch-hitting and focus on just hitting left-handed”.

Sounds like what people said about a guy named Espinosa giving up switch-hitting and concentrate on batting right-handed.

Callis: “I like Souza for what he is…..That .355 average, I don’t think it is fully indicative, I think he may be a guy who hits closer to .255 in the Big Leagues…..”

  4. Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 2, 2014 at 3:19 PM

Bastian on Walters: “Aren’t really sure right now what position he would fit into for the long view. They will probably have him play some 2nd base in the Minor Leagues. Maybe test him in the outfield.”

    Outfield. Yes outfield.
