Game 118: Nats at Mets

Aug 13, 2014, 3:27 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images USA Today Sports Images

Two of the Nationals’ three regular outfielders are not in tonight’s lineup, for very different reasons. Denard Span, who streak of consecutive games reaching base came to an end last night at 36, gets a well-deserved and highly rare day off. How rare? Well, since returning from the 7-day concussion DL in mid-April, Span had started all but two games (June 15 in St. Louis and June 28 in the second game of a doubleheader in Chicago). Like I said, this one is well-deserved.

Jayson Werth, on the other hand, is out of the lineup for the fourth time in five games, his injured right shoulder still bothering him. Hopefully Matt Williams will provide reporters in New York an update on Werth later this afternoon.

In the meantime, Michael Taylor (fresh off a dazzling big-league debut) now gets a chance to start in his natural center field position and lead off for the first time. Bryce Harper takes Werth’s spot in right field, while Kevin Frandsen starts in left. Jordan Zimmermann is on the mound against veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon as the Nats incredibly seek their 24th win in their last 28 games at Citi Field.

I’m not there in person for this series, but check back for any medical updates, and check back in the morning for some thoughts on the game…

see you in Seattle Eugene from Oregon…

    • Eugene in Oregon - Aug 13, 2014 at 3:53 PM

Excellent. I’m with family on Friday and a friend on Saturday, but was thinking of suggesting that anyone going to Sunday’s 1pm game meet prior to the game for brunch or lunch or something. Any interest?

  4. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 3:36 PM

    Let’s win the series tonight.

    Go Dodgers too!

  6. natsfan1a - Aug 13, 2014 at 3:42 PM

Enjoy the day off, Denard. You earned it.

Go, Bulldog! Go, NATS! Keep losing, Braves. You can do it!:-)

  7. RPrecupjr - Aug 13, 2014 at 3:42 PM

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere else, but I like to read these kinds of things:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/pipeline-perspectives-lucas-giolito-has-best-raw-talent?ymd=20140813&content_id=89310450&vkey=news_mlb

Do we see him up here next September?

    • David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 4:00 PM

Perhaps. I think 2016 is the earliest we could expect to see him here for good, but that would take aggressive promotion next year. It’s possible he’s a September callup next year. Probably 50/50

    • unkyd59 - Aug 13, 2014 at 4:27 PM

They’ll still be counting his pitches pretty closely… I would think he would have to miss a few weeks, somewhere along the way to be available for much work in September ’15, no?

    • janebeard - Aug 13, 2014 at 5:28 PM

Thanks for posting this piece, RP!

  8. Smyrcok - Aug 13, 2014 at 3:46 PM

No doubt Denard has earned a day off, but isn’t it weird to not see his name in the lineup?

    • masterfishkeeper - Aug 13, 2014 at 3:57 PM

      It is weird.

I wonder if MW is making this move today partly because Colon mostly throws fastballs, making this a good matchup for Michael Taylor?

      • Theophilus T.S. - Aug 13, 2014 at 4:34 PM

That’s a plus to the move but I’d guess it’s something Williams has been thinking about for a week or so. After all, he has given Span a couple of games off earlier this season. It looks like he’s got a capable short-term replacement on defense — unlike with Desmond and Rendon — so it’s an opportune time. But probably the last time this season unless they somehow clinch the division early.

  9. stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 4:42 PM

MT leading off? Srsly? Awright, Matt!

    • Doc - Aug 13, 2014 at 4:55 PM

It’ll be a good test of MT’s batting adjustments. Colon is a master of changing speeds.

Too bad MT doesn’t have Denard taking the first pitches.

I’ll bet Span is mentoring him as we post..

  10. Nats fool - Aug 13, 2014 at 4:50 PM

I guess all it takes is a home run and not being Bryce Harper to crack the top three in the lineup. Rendon and Harper are your natural 2 and 3. Not saying Taylor hasn’t earned lead off for tonight, just find it odd.

  11. NatsLady - Aug 13, 2014 at 5:09 PM

  12. stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 5:24 PM

@AdamKilgoreWP: For batting practice, the Nats cut off the back of Michael Taylor’s hat, so his high top forms the blue panel.

  13. janebeard - Aug 13, 2014 at 5:26 PM

More than Michael batting 1, I’m wondering about Cabrera in the two hole. Not second guessing anyone; just trying to understand it. So can a more knowledgeable Insider teach me why he’s 2 and Rendon is now three? Is it just to get Anthony deeper in the order, with his propensity for the multi-bag hit? Thanks in advance.

    • Eugene in Oregon - Aug 13, 2014 at 6:13 PM

I would assume it’s just a matter of getting R-L-R-L— thing going.

      • Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 6:43 PM

That, and Rendon is the best hitter in the lineup, thus 3. Might as well get The Kid right up front now, before the scouting on him kicks in (if it hasn’t already).

    • stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 6:16 PM

Makes no sense to me at all. On the other hand, 3 hits last night so what do I know?

  14. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 6:54 PM

Tarp was on the field, but now removed.

  15. Section 222 - Aug 13, 2014 at 6:56 PM

The only certainty about the Nats’ lineup, it would seem, is that Bryce Harper will bat 6th.

    • Eugene in Oregon - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:04 PM

At least for another few weeks.

    • Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:14 PM

Has Werth hit anything but 3rd?

  16. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:04 PM

Zack Walters just hit a walkoff homer for the Indians

    • stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:29 PM

Good for Zach. Finally getting a decent chance.

      I’m a fanboy, I’ll admit it.

Anyone else see Boswell’s comment that the Nats clubhouse never “warmed to him” because he acted more comfortable (sic) than a rookie is entitled to?

      • David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:30 PM

He threw a hissy fit when he didn’t make the team out of ST and that upset a lot of people.

  17. Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:08 PM

Michael A leading off. No pressure….

  18. 6ID20 - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:11 PM

Is anyone else’s feed of the game screwed up (MASN2, both HD and SD) or is it just Cox Cable in Fairfax County?

  19. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:11 PM

    Lol nice ab

  20. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:13 PM

What was that? Two of those balls to Rendon were well outside. Taylor’s were legit strikes.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:23 PM

This ump is all about hunting strikes.

  21. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:16 PM

    Wow…7-pitch inning? Oof.

Hope Zinn is on his game.

  22. John - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:17 PM

Is it safe to put the nationals rotation top to bottom as of today like this:
    Fister
    TRoark?
    JZim
    Stras
    Gio
??? Does that seem right? Gio scares me every time out now. Stras is to inconsistent, Jzim has no luck but solid. Nothing like last year though. Roark is becoming more and more reliable and continues to impress me every time he pitches and fister is just fister. Shut down Ace. What other guy around baseball would you trust right now in a big game other then Fister?

  23. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:17 PM

I would have been fine with seeing this line up tomorrow, after securing the W tonight… With Lobo behind the plate…

Nonetheless, go Nats! Massacre the mets…..

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:24 PM

      Just win baby.

  24. Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:20 PM

Like I said, Frandsen over Hairston.

    • Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:24 PM

      Yeah, WTH was Wright thinking?

      • masterfishkeeper - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:12 PM

want to reconsider your views on Frandsen? Wow.

    • Section 222 - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:17 PM

Hairston would have caught that. ;-)

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 13, 2014 at 11:01 PM

You think? Frandsen got nonchalant with it . Awful.

  25. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:20 PM

    Ha… Don’t run on KF….. Dumb Wright…. Just dumb…

  26. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:21 PM

David Wright doing his imitation of a Nat.

  27. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:23 PM

    Uhm….

    What’s the plate approach tonight?

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:26 PM

Tonight should be about swinging, this ump calls strikes, and once behind Colon will throw close that will be called.

Tonight is a swing first situation, even though you don’t like it,

  28. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:25 PM

    14 pitches through 2…

  29. exposedindc - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:26 PM

Wow….Colon is Madduxesque….. Plus about 60lbs of course

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:27 PM

      90 pounds

      • exposedindc - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:30 PM

Was trying to be nice ……lol

  30. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:30 PM

Zim is not paying attention. This guy will call strikes. Don’t hit the middle of the zone.

  31. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:31 PM

Where the hell was ball 3. Same place as strike 1

  32. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:35 PM

Carl Crawfotd single drives in a run

  33. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:40 PM

Very stupid bunt call. Worst case scenario is a DP scoring a run. Best case scenario is a hit. Could hit a sac fly or something.

  34. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:40 PM

Seen more bad bunts the last few weeks throughout the majors.

Bunting is all about catching the ball with the bat.

  35. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:41 PM

    Uhm, ugly at bat… Again….

  36. Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:41 PM

Michael Taylor doing his Danny K impersonation. Ugly.

  37. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:42 PM

Out of three pitches 1 a known strike. With a man on third, you have to just make contact. Taylor looked totally clueless.

  38. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:42 PM

Colon is averaging 8 pitches per inning…. 8

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:44 PM

I don’t have a problem like you do about that. But if you are going to swing, hit it. That is more important.

  39. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:43 PM

Miguel Rojas knocked in Carl Crawford 2-0

  40. exposedindc - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:45 PM

Hate that bunt with runners on 1st and 3rd…MW does it every time … JZimm seems to be a better hitter than bunter

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:47 PM

I hate it, with 0 outs. 1 out is fine

  41. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:47 PM

    Colon slower than Strasburg

  42. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:48 PM

    Nice inning

  43. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:50 PM

    OK, here we come…y’all ready?

    • Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:11 PM

      Or not…

    • Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:14 PM

Well, the pitch counts are more similar now…so that’s good.

  44. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:51 PM

What set up the Braves run? The dreaded sac bunt. No sac bunt no run.

  45. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 7:53 PM

Was listening to some commentator last night, who said if you are going to get out at least 70% of the time, you should always advance a runner when you make out. The teams that the best generally win the most. (That I don’t know, but know that too many outs are unproductive)

  46. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Why is the blue helping Colon?

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:01 PM

Zim needs to make note. Throw in the same place

  47. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Strike 1 and 2 exact same soot, as was the foul.

  48. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:02 PM

The ball wasn’t hit that hard, should have been able to beat it.

  49. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:03 PM

We get people on, but without a homer to often they don’t score.

  50. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:06 PM

The ball was right over for Harper to drive and he stares at it. His fast tails like that all the time. Did he and Schu discuss Colon at all.

As I complained Deck didn’t coach the players about the pitcher, I don’t schu doesn’t either.

  51. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Desmond had to reach for that outside pitch because it was called a strike before. It was not a strike. It’s very hard to hit. But you can’t leave it up to the ump. Unfortunate.

    • masterfishkeeper - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:14 PM

The HP umpire really doesn’t belong in the majors.

  52. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:12 PM

just got in front of my electronic baseball box — pitchers’ duel or just weak hitting?

    • coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:15 PM

Oh Sh*!, I must be bad luck, just as I tuned in and posted. Sorry guys….

  53. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:12 PM

    Sigh…..

  54. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:13 PM

What the hell Franfsen lazily tries to catch that. You can’t do that as major leaguer.

    • Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:22 PM

Looked more like he misjudged it. Which may not be much better on a can of corn like that. Just saying.

  55. lphboston - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:13 PM

    Time to DFA Fransden

  56. Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:14 PM

Frandsen doing his best imitation of Hairston.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:16 PM

I thought the same. Just like Hairston.

  57. coop202 - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:14 PM

Remember the days when jzim would pitch a gem but wouldn’t get run support? Glad those are over…

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:19 PM

Frandsen not interested in hitting either. Why is he playing tonight.

Zim bunt or Zim fly out to center and MW CHOOSES PLEASE BUNT you don’t need an RBI

  58. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:15 PM

Of course getting ahead of Duda and then allowing him to get a hit didn’t help

  59. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:17 PM

Wow, that was unfortunate. FP was right about two hands – Frandsen should know better. But Zimnn just shrugged it off and went after the next guy. That was nice to see.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:21 PM

A major league outfielder might miss liners by mid judging, a can of corn absolutely never be dropped. Never. Span’s night off shows his War a plus 1. I doubt Harper drops that.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:25 PM

Not unfortunate. Frandsen was very aware of what he was doing. Didn’t think about 2 hands are all.

  60. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:18 PM

Aww, man. Kevin Kevin. That’s not supposed to happen in Ponce de Leon baseball.

  61. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:23 PM

Simmons ties game he hits a ball a foot outside for a hit. When we swing at one a foot outside we miss.

  62. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:26 PM

JZimm has always thrown too many hittable 0-2 pitches.

  63. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:27 PM

Gads, I didn’t realize Frandsen let a run in…Sheesh! Turn your back for 20 minutes to get your youngest in bed…

  64. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:30 PM

So yeah, maybe Taylor should spend some time in AAA before we anoint him.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:33 PM

Cup of coffee now. Man Colon is making him look back. I don’t think Schu prepared anyone, as the swing back pitch is what Colon does, and they all act shocked. This is what done the last 5 years. No one scouting?

    • Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:34 PM

      MASN with a Goldschmidt ad…ooof

  65. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:31 PM

RISP 1 for 6 and it didn’t even score a run.

  66. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:31 PM

Den Dekker caught one just about where Frandsen missed.

  67. scnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:32 PM

Have to think Frandsen’s days are numbered. Don’t need your extra players being lazy not when you have Souza crashing into the wall.

  68. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:34 PM

    MASN with a Goldschmidt ad…ooof

  69. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:35 PM

I used the word lazy before, but the actual word is lackadaisical

    • Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:39 PM

I disagree with that assesment. I think he looked like he misjudged it.

Oh, SURE, NOW you use 2 hands!

  70. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:36 PM

Bartolo Colon is probably not going 9. Lighten up, folks.

    Great pitching tonight.

  73. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:39 PM

Now that was a lot harder play. He cradled that, which the other should have been.

  74. stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Just got home and watched replay of Frandsen’s error. Sickening. Glad I didn’t hear FP’s excuses for his pal.

  75. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Of course MW play calling hasn’t helped.

Thank LaGares…. And THANK YOU HENLEY…

  80. Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:45 PM

So, I’m late to the show tonight.I was listening while grilling dinner. Have I ever mentioned how much that I don’t like infielders, especially mediocre infielders, playing the outfield? Also, Michael Taylor’s last AB was closer to what I saw earlier this year. His swing on strike three was not a “short swing,”

    • knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Heard FP say earlier tonight that Taylor was originally a shortstop who was converted to an outfielder. When I was in college our coach took a few middle infielders and converted them into outfielders, primarily center fielders to utilize their speed.

      • Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:51 PM

I wasn’t talking about Taylor in the OF. I was talking about Frandsen.

      • knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:04 PM

Understood that Joe, just pointing out FP’s comment that’s all.

      • Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:12 PM

Knox, I just don’t think that theML level during the season is the right time to move guys to a new position. Frandsen did a pretty good job earlier in the year but you knew it was only a matter of time.

      • knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:35 PM

Joe, agree the ML is no place for on the job training. Probably the worse I ever saw was Christian Guzman trying to play right field in Houston….2011 I think.

      • Section 222 - Aug 13, 2014 at 11:03 PM

Incidentally, Zach Walters was playing LF for the Indians today when he hit his walkoff HR.

  84. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:45 PM

    Speedy La-Roche gets it done!

  87. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:47 PM

  88. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:47 PM

  89. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:48 PM

    • knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:52 PM

Hit it in the 5.5 hole KF…. Redeem yourself!

      CONTINUE TO CLEAN THE COLON!

      LMAO!

  90. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:48 PM

    Id consider a squeeze

  91. stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:49 PM

    Don’t suck, Kevin.

    • stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:51 PM

SFs don’t make your RISP BA look good, but by definition they score runs.

  92. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:50 PM

If Frandsen was hockey player not +1 even. 1 for 1 against

  93. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:50 PM

Like I said, relax. They got this guy.

  94. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:51 PM

    Brave announcer bemoaning Colon.

    • stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:53 PM

      Constipated.

    • knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:53 PM

Care less about Barves announcers…….they all suck wind. Constantly complaining about something or other.

  95. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:51 PM

    replay?

  96. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:51 PM

Heckuva play…. Thought Jordan was safe…

  97. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:55 PM

    rare error by ALR…

    • coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:56 PM

but that was a bullet on a bad short hop….

  98. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:56 PM

Doing what we can not to help Zimm

  99. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 8:58 PM

    WTF?!

  100. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:03 PM

Didn’t this bite us last time we replaced Zimm in this situation.

  101. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:07 PM

Nice job Drew!! Serious ball movement tonight.

  102. knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:07 PM

    Way to go Drew!

  103. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:07 PM

    Way.
    To.
    Go.
    Drew!!!!!!!!!!

  104. Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:08 PM

I don’t know what Ramos saw when he threw down to first, but I actually liked the HBP. Worked out great on the force at home, allowing the inning to end with a K by Drew.

  105. stoatva - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:08 PM

    DROOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  106. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:08 PM

Big time stuff from Storen right there. After we nearly imploded.

  107. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:09 PM

Drew wants his old job back please Mr Rizzo.

    • Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:14 PM

Do I smell doubt about Rafael Soriano?

      • Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:18 PM

        Not on my part.

      • Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:23 PM

That was the most bizarre stolen base I’ve seen in a while.

      • Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:26 PM

I knew that Sofa, just getting a clarification.

  108. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:13 PM

    C’mon A-Drub!

  109. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:14 PM

    YES!

  110. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:15 PM

    Well done Cabrera!!!

  111. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:15 PM

    Az Az Az Az!

  112. knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:15 PM

    • Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:17 PM

      + 1

  113. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:16 PM

    I’ll take it! Thanks A.C.!

  114. Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:16 PM

    Espy who?

  115. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Ok, Mr Cabrera…. Congrats to your first hr as a Nat….

  116. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:17 PM

    Take THAT Zack Walters
    Bang Zoom.

  117. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:21 PM

And I bet Cabrerra doesn’t start to ONLY swing for the fences from now on. Take notes Danny, we want you to contribute.

  118. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:22 PM

ALR Steal!!! That’s a rare sighting! Love it!

  119. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:25 PM

On average, Laroche attempts about 2 steals per year, and succeeds once. Rarer than a no hitter!

  120. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:26 PM

    Wow Cabrera…. Wow

  121. Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:26 PM

    Again I ask, Espy who?

  122. scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:27 PM

    Can we keep him plz!!!?

    Go Asdrupal!!!

  123. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:27 PM

That LaRoche steal was the funniest play I’ve seen all year. He looked like he was actually *stealing* second, like he’d go to jail if he got caught. He needed a striped shirt and a mask.

    • Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:32 PM

      +1, I was cracking up

      • coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:39 PM

        +2!

    • scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:42 PM

      I just spit up

  124. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:38 PM

Im feeling a buffalo stampede coming on…

  125. NatsLady - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:38 PM

Got home just in time to see the LaRoche steal. That was funny. Missed all the errors… So I didn’t get aggravated…. well, not too aggravated.

    • Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:40 PM

Tough seeing ‘3’ in the E column.

Let’s just make sure it doesn’t matter in the end.

      Span still seeing the ball!

  126. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:41 PM

Boy, a half-days rest really gives Denard some pop in his swing!

  127. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:41 PM

Soriano do your thing. Please no walks (or base runners)

    • Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:59 PM

      Well, he didn’t walk anybody.

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM

And we didn’t lose. Goes hand in hand

  128. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:43 PM

    Scott.
    Hairston.

  129. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:44 PM

I can’t deal with these Hairston PH opportunites anymore. At least Chad Tracy OCCASIONALLY hit a homer. And I couldn’t stand Tracy either.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:46 PM

I was tired of his ass last year… I just wish they would dfa him and call it a day…

  130. scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:44 PM

    Anyone seen enough Hairiston?

  131. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:44 PM

    I am ALL tucked.

  132. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:45 PM

Hairston v righty makes as much sense as Blevins v righty, and not as much sense against a lefty.

  133. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:48 PM

That’s not the end of the world. Get the next 3.

  134. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:48 PM

    Mistake pitch….

  135. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

Barkeep – a bourbon and Maalox please!

  136. scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    Yikes.

  137. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    Oh boy….

  138. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    Okay now it’s getting concerning…

  139. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

YANK HIM NOW MATT, YANK HIM NOAW1!!!!!!!

  140. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    This sucks.

  141. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

Let’s throw a fast ball down the middle. Up 1-2, and your throwing junk. OK. MW you must stop the bleeding send McCatty out to calm him down.

  142. knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    Sori not fooling anybody.

  143. dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:50 PM

    Drew for closer

  144. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:50 PM

You can’t yank him because no one else is ready.

  145. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:51 PM

Idid the batter run? I failed to notice.

  146. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:51 PM

Is the bullpen at least up?

  147. scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:52 PM

    Still up in zone….

  148. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Damn sori…. So I would pull him now…

  149. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

If he loses this for us I will be SuperFu__ingPiss3d

  150. dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

5 blown saves by Mid August

    We got issues

  151. scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

    Bullpen now!!

  152. knoxvillenat - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Randy Knorr would yank him right here , if not earlier.

  153. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Sori is leaving them up. And his head is in the clouds again…

  154. scnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Getting really tired of this act

  155. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Looks just like in Atlanta. Matt Williams, time to WAKE THE F UP!

  156. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:54 PM

Every dam hit is on a belt high fast ball. Same as a few weeks ago. Is MW paying no attention. McCatty sitting on his thumbs

  157. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:54 PM

    Booo.

    • Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:55 PM

      Yay!!!

  158. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Why doesn’t McCatty or someone come out and talk to Sori….

    • coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:55 PM

      Or talk to MW!

  159. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Nice, but we should NOT have to count on tag plays at home

  160. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Ramos looked like he blocked the plate a bit

  161. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:56 PM

    Ramos was fine

  162. dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:56 PM

could be worse….Bryan Morris, MIA, 7 save opportunites, 7 blown saves…leads the league

  163. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:57 PM

Get pop up and be done!

  164. coollikelivo - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Beautiful, I KNEW Sori would come through…. :-)

  165. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Oh, that was fun, only because we won!

  166. conatsguy - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Just as the Nats drew it out!
    Untucked

  167. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Thought Soriano would tip that grounder

  168. Eric - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

    Series win!!! Brooms out tomorrow!

  169. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

    Whew…. Damn oh man…. Nats stole this one… :-). But a win is a win….

  170. scmargenau - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:58 PM

    Ok. Still. NOT COOL!!!

  171. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:59 PM

    PfP and UnTuckEd.

  172. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:59 PM

    Had them all the way.

I just looked in the mirror. FP is right, my hair turned gray.

  173. dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 9:59 PM

Soriano…I don’t know how he does it
27 out of 31…I take it all back

  174. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:00 PM

Series win!!!! That’s what it’s about… Sori with a lot of emotion at the end… Scary the be-Jesus out of me… But series win!!!!

    • dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:02 PM

I need a bourbon and cortisone shot (in the head)

  175. Joe Seamhead - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:01 PM

    I love exciting baseball!

    • NatsLady - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:02 PM

      That was exciting…

  176. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:02 PM

Series win for the Nats. Barves pressing.

  177. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:02 PM

I like that Matt brought the infield in. Play to win, don’t play to not lose. Yeah, a hit wins the game, but I like playing it aggressive and we won because of it.

  178. NatsLady - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Kimbrel walks the leadoff batter, and it wasn’t close.

  179. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Why can’t we do this against Kimbrel. Dodgers have 1st and 2nd no outs.

  180. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Dodgers first and second Pig up 0 outs

  181. Soul Possession, Sec 3, My Sofa - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:05 PM

3-2 ATL top o’9, ethier walks.

  182. NatsLady - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:05 PM

Sac bunt and Dee Gordon beats it out. (News flash, he’s fast). Two on, none out.

  183. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:05 PM

Tieing run on 2nd with no outs…. Lad/ATL…

  184. dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:06 PM

    Kimbrel 38 out of 42

  185. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:06 PM

2 on, no out for LA against Kimbrel. Puig at the plate…

    Let’s go Dodgers!!!!!!

  186. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:06 PM

    Lol, it’s a major echo in here… :-)

  187. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:08 PM

Puig k on a ball high.

  188. Section 222 - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:08 PM

Un-freaking-tuck! Listening to the radio broadcast was pretty darn exciting. Dave was worried the out at home would be overturned.

Now the Dodgers need to come back against Kimbrel.

  189. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:10 PM

    Way to go A Gonzalez!

  190. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:11 PM

    Adrienne Gonzalez single left

  191. dcwx61 - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:11 PM

    Kimbrel brings an exciting game

  192. natsfan1a - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:11 PM

Yes! Nats win. In other news, my blood pressure is through the roof. But it was totally worth it.

  193. David Proctor - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:11 PM

    Upton with a horrible decision.

  194. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:12 PM

Come on boyfriend… Hit it deep.

  195. rayvil01 - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:12 PM

If Rizzo keeps Soriano next year I’m going to have to buy a personal defrbulator.

    • natsfan1a - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM

We may need to make that a timeshare.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Aug 13, 2014 at 11:05 PM

      +1

  196. ehay2k - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:12 PM

Upton throws to the wrong base, misses easy out on Ethier. Now bases loaded.

  197. manassasnatsfan - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:12 PM

    Come on kemp

  198. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:12 PM

It seems the way to best Kimbrel is to hope he walks guys and tires out.

  199. Danny - Aug 13, 2014 at 10:13 PM

    Boo kemp
